VOR: Goncharov
Oh, pretty low! Oh I know, "bro its the film that launched Scorsese's career, it defined the aesthetic of the mafia film", its all dreadfully post-hoc. The Godfather came out *the year before* guys, they probably hired Pacino because he could just recycle his lines and make for an easy shoot. And that is just the mainstream stuff; Straniero's knowing descent into his inevitable demise at the hands of his users? Yeah I saw Sadao Nakajima's Aesthetics of a Bullet just like you did Martin; it came out 10 months before in February of 1973, and we know from interviews Scorsese liked it!
And people be out here saying "oh it brought the erotic into organized crime" to which I must ask have y'all never killed anyone before?? Its just an inherently erotic thing to do, Eros & Thanatos have a standing Thursday fuckfest appointment. Scorsese didn't invent this, God did. And oh sure Robert de Niro brought it to the surface in new beautiful ways but my dudes its Robert de Niro, the guy is literally incapable of not bringing off-putting, domineering sex eyes to any set. Taxi Driver exists, its the crystal meth version of his backalley bodega powder performance in Goncharov, lets be real here. There is a reason he got the Oscar nom in 1976 and not 1973.
Goncharov is a good movie, don't get me wrong, but if Scorsese hadn't gone on to make films like Goodfellas and if it didn't have that timeless footwear promotional tie-in campaign, you wouldn't remember it today. D+.
