I like to imagine Taka, Mondo, and Chihiro all spending the night in Chihiro's room after a study session (where they did also kiss) and as they're laying down it comes up that they all had a crush on Makoto at some point.

Taka cheerfully goes, "This is the second and third time I've developed feelings for my study partner!"

"Who was the first?" Mondo asks.

"Makoto," Taka answers unabashedly.

"Wait, seriously?" Mondo says, half sitting up.

"That's funny," Chihiro giggles. "I had a crush on Makoto at the beginning of the year."

"Both of you?!" Mondo says, sitting all the way up. He rubs his forehead and admits, "Sh!t, I did, too. I thought it was just me."

"Maybe having a crush on Makoto is a rite of passage for our class," Chihiro muses.

"What? Do you think other people in our class have had a crush on Makoto?" Taka says.

"I think so."

It becomes almost an inside joke between the three of them for a long time after that. Mondo is the skeptic ("No, there's no way. Not Byakuya, too!"), Chihiro is the advocate for secret heartthrob Makoto, and Taka is the impartial party who listens to both sides and reaches his own conclusions.

Makoto is allowed to optionally join the Chihiro/Taka/Mondo polycule anytime he wants; Chihiro is allowed to join Hina and Sakura anytime they want; Hina is allowed to join Makoto/Byakuya/Kyoko anytime she wants.

Makoto has just been around for so much of Chishimondo's formative events that he's essentially a vestigial organ to their relationship. It's natural for him to be there, but it's fine if he's not.

Chihiro kind of tiptoes into the role of third wheel when they first start hanging out with Sakuraoi and grows comfortable with the ambiguously queerplatonic add-on status as a side-effect of growing more comfortable with themself in general.

And Hina accidentally impressed Byakuya, and he's the main gatekeeper of the throuple.
