You see shinomono 2 is a reversal of not only nadeko snake but nadeko pool.

It has to be accepted at a point, Nadeko Pool has gained narrative relevance. The way ppl talk about or adapt the story can miss the point in a way, as while the fanservice element exists it’s framed in story as Koyomi being uncomfortable and playing dumb with Nadeko.

With quotes like:

“it was hard to look at.”

(In reference to nadeko body)

“I would have to say it’s ‘kind of pitiable’”

(in regards to nadeko’s body)

“The words “Stay away from me!” were dangerously close to slipping out of my mouth, but I managed to hold them back.”

(In regards to seeing Nadeko in the swimsuit for the first time)

“Unable to look her in the eye, I had to look away from her entirely.”

“-it was the like you were committing a crime by looking, and no one wanted anything to do with it. There was an air of discomfort floating around the pool.”

“While the pool was fairly out of the way, it's not like the bus was taking dirt roads to get there. I don't remember the ride being particularly bumpy, but Sengoku kept bumping into me and leaning on me, and now my shoulder was bothering me. (An unexpected shoulder tackle!) Well, I don't think it will be enough to affect my swimming.”

Even at the end of that story the punch line is Koyomi can’t swim. Most elaborate on the concept with Koyomi just jumping into the pool and sustaining a head injury at the end, an ultimate escape from this actual situation.

While a fan service story it does play into the concept of age and body image and bravery. Which are important things in shino2 as the themes of Nadeko’s body image are with the texts as Nadeko becomes acclimated to the wild and eliminating the need for the image of sweetness itself. Because the weird thinness and frailty of Nadeko in the Nadeko pool era contrasts with the survival based thinness and the building of muscle and the grossness of Nadeko’s hair + the sunburns, combined to make a rougher rugged Nadeko the genuinely opposite of Nadeko pool. At least that’s what I think.

The image of this also clearly persists into an arc like nadeko draw clearly.

Of course classic Nadeko snake is reversed there but the reversal is more in line with a combined Koyomi role for her. While in amarimonogatari Koyomi is sort of put in a similar but opposite role of OG nadeko snake.

(while someone could try and make a point of Koyomi body image that’s a more complex topic that’s it’s interesting to run with, I wouldn’t say that body image is the exact parallel, it’s closer to the fan service inflicted. This arc also plays on some hanekawa arc parallels and some tsukimono but tsukimono was more about Koyomi’s body than amarimono. Regardless amarimono does have Koyomi get inflicted with a parallel scene of choking that directly calls back to nadeko snake, they also have an undressing scene with araragi in a cage technically too but you’ll need to brain blast for this to make it a parallel. Also there’s a curse that gets more powerful due to human intervention also is tied into the concept, like nadeko snake.)

Anyway, Nadeko Pool’s persistent relevance is a bit baffling but really if you break it down you can see that beyond the general comedy fanservice aspects of it, you can see how it can consistently be integrated into the story.

Even if it’s a story abt Nadeko trying to come on to Araragi, failing bc he has negative interest in her, him trying to be nice even with the lack of interest, and then him sustaining a pool related injury instantly ending the story.

The thing abt monster season is that its arcs are a sort of play on or a sort of reversal of old (particularly first season/bake) arcs. How intensely so is up for debate of course, many successive arcs are in a sense reversals by their very nature. However what they reverse is different I’d say. Which is how Amari can have parallels of nadeko snake and Tsukihi phoenix in a different way than their successive arcs, this is because they are on the Koyomi half of that reality.

Horrible reality dawns upon me that the little vignettes in nademono could be a pseudo adaptation of nadeko pool from nadeko’s perspective

If they adapt nadeko pool via the vignettes there’s nothing stopping them from adapting mayoi welcome in the viginettes of shinobumonogatari

This is the funniest option from a story access and translation perspective mind you I’m not against it lol

Alright, ramble ahead, if none of this makes sense and you read it, I’ll prolly reblog again with more coherent thoughts

The way nademono functions as an arc is that it, as a story operates on broad parallel to other preexisting arcs. And as a Doraemon bit.

Monogatari is a story of parallels, you can effectively mirror any given character of monogatari with each other for a greater cohesive understanding of the story and its characters.

Nademonogatari parallels kizu, owari3, nekoshiro, and every arc where nadeko is present before hand (including nadeko pool).

This manifests in adaptational choices where there’s a lot of parallel action or shots between said arcs (and of course renai + mousou).

The Kaminade fight isn’t just broadly referencing kizu fights it is in a sense a kizu fight with bodily clone destruction sweeping action, and fake out attacks.

But thematically it’s way closer to neko shiro’s kako hanekura fight.

Nademonogatari is Nadeko’s kizu and nekoshiro essentially, in the way of its themes and many boss fights.

Granted some could say owari 3 is Araragi’s neko shiro.

Through it, it becomes the intro to Nadeko’s true state as a secondary protagonist.

The way the anime frames some more original shots kind of gives it some greater Koyomi parallels.

One thing is I feel like reading the novels and getting pretty explicit confirmation that Nadeko didn’t really love Koyomi (as its said from Nadeko’s perspective when talking to herself) kinda colors the vibe on how one reads the end of this arc.

On another note I wonder how Nadeko’s side part will evolve in the future as Nadeko ages?

I think a really interesting aspect of today’s episode is the parallels they add

They have some kizu referencing shots in the kaminade fight and the star gazing at the end is an interesting parallel to enact on purpose, because of the romantic parallel it would draw given the other star gazing scenes in monogatari are explicit romantic.

Nadeko is kind of a memetic entity, you can never get a strong reading on a nadeko fan. It seems every interpretation of her character ive read is a mirror to the interpreter, an infinite spiral of interpretation. Nadeko achieves tumblrman status by having several self clones existing in the same space though I doubt that she could achieve the same phenomena due to fandom spaces present. She’s a fandomsplitter with a strong love/hate ratio. Nadeko doesn’t even need a full meme because you can place her anywhere like a jpeg. Nadeko fans only unite under the image of her with the phrase “omg nadeko! <3”, lest they tear each other apart through interaction between the distinct purposely separate nadeko fan pools. Distinct species that are to never mix lest they begin “the great nadecourse” circa now to forever. A nadecoil forming a nadehelix of separation, nadenow, and nadeforever.
