────────────────────────
It was nearly midnight when the shrill ringtone of your phone jolted you awake. Blinking against the darkness, you fumbled for your device, the screen's harsh light making you squint. The name that flashed across the display sent a jolt of adrenaline through you: Na Hae Soo. In an instant, you shot upright, heart pounding as surged of mostly nervousness and excitement, your blood rushing to your head.
This was the first time Haesoo called you first. Your hands shook as you answered, breathless, “...hello?” Your voice came out hoarse, prompting you to clear your throat, but before you could speak again, a shaky voice broke through the line.
“(L/N)... I-I... need you *hic*,” Haesoo's words were laced with distress, and you could hear the tremor in her voice, hinting at tears. A wave of concern washed over you—was she in trouble? Had her husband hurt her? “Is everything okay? Are you hurt? Where are you? Are you at home? I’m coming to get you!” you blurted out, kicking off the covers and reflexively putting on your slippers.
You stumbled around your room, colliding with furniture and nearly tripping over the chaos strewn about. Catching yourself against the wall, you flicked on the light, urgency propelling you forward. “Just wait for me, okay, Na Hae!” you shouted as you dashed out, grabbing your keys from the counter.
Pulling the phone away, you realize she had hung up. Panic flooded your body as you burst through the door, the chill of the night air prickling your skin. You raced down the stairs, nearly losing your footing, and slammed into your car. With a quick flick, you unlocked it and started the engine, ignoring the seatbelt as you sped out of the parking lot, foot pressing hard on the gas, heart racing with every second that passed.
*Several Months Ago*
You finally finished doing pick up orders, your knees protesting as you bent down to ease the strain from standing too long. Glancing around you spotted Jeong sweeping the floor, you called out to her, "Could you take this out to the front for me once you're done?" Her eyes widened in surprise as she took in the table brimming with bouquets. "You finished that quickly! It hasn't been long at all! Thank you, Unnie!" She exclaimed, her joy palpable, mostly because it meant she was spared from the heavy lifting that you had just tackled.
"Yeah yeah, no problem," you replied, you wiped your green-stained hands on your apron and let out a weary sigh, contemplating a much-deserved lunch break.
But just as you began to relax, a loud voice pierced the air, "¿Dónde está la perra que estaba coqueteando con mi novio?!” (“ᵂʰᵉʳᵉ'ˢ ᵗʰᵉ ᵇᶦᵗᶜʰ ʷʰᵒ ʷᵃˢ ᶠˡᶦʳᵗᶦⁿᵍ ʷᶦᵗʰ ᵐʸ ᵇᵒʸᶠʳᶦᵉⁿᵈ!”)
Ooor not.
You and Jeong exchanged alarmed glances, the malice in the voice unmistakable despite the foreign language. Your shoulders slumped in resignation. "I'll go check it out," you said, steeling yourself for the confrontation ahead.
"Estas flores... ¿quién se las dio a mi novio?!" the voice continued, sharp and accusatory. ("ᵀʰᵉˢᵉ ᶠˡᵒʷᵉʳˢ—ʷʰᵒ ᵍᵃᵛᵉ ᵗʰᵉᵐ ᵗᵒ ᵐʸ ᵇᵒʸᶠʳᶦᵉⁿᵈ!?")
"Um- ma'am please, I-" You heard Haesoo's voice trembled, laced with fear.
"¡Fuiste tú quien le dio esto a mi novio, puta!" the woman shouted, her fury palpable. ("ᵂᵃˢ ᶦᵗ ʸᵒᵘ ʷʰᵒ ᵍᵃᵛᵉ ᵗʰᵉˢᵉ ᵗᵒ ᵐʸ ᵇᵒʸᶠʳᶦᵉⁿᵈ, ʸᵒᵘ ʷʰᵒʳᵉ!")
Your heart raced as you quickened your steps, rounding a corner to find a woman violently waving a bouquet, petals scattering like confetti in a storm, while Hae-soo stood with her head bowed, clearly shaken. Without hesitation, you moved closer, wrapping one arm around Haesoo's shoulder and taking her trembling cold hands in yours, offering her a sense of safety. Haesoo snapped her head up in surprise at your presence, but the warmth of your embrace enveloped her, and for a moment, she felt shielded from the chaos surrounding them.
You pulled her in close, your voice low and soothing, "¿Cómo podemos ayudarle?" ("ᴴᵒʷ ᶜᵃⁿ ʷᵉ ʰᵉˡᵖ ʸᵒᵘ?") A gentle smile graced your lips as the woman turned her attention to you, her thrashing seemingly to subside, "Quiero enfrentar a la zorra que le envió estas flores a mi novio; ¡al parecer estaba coqueteando con él!" Her voice escalated with each word, and you could see Haesoo ever so slightly trembling beside you, yet your warm grip around her hands remained steady and reassuring. ("ᴵ ʷᵃⁿᵗ ᵗᵒ ᶜᵒⁿᶠʳᵒⁿᵗ ᵗʰᵉ ˢᵏᵃⁿᵏ ʷʰᵒ ˢᵉⁿᵗ ᵗʰᵉˢᵉ ᶠˡᵒʷᵉʳˢ ᵗᵒ ᵐʸ ᵇᵒʸᶠʳᶦᵉⁿᵈ; ᵃᵖᵖᵃʳᵉⁿᵗˡʸ, ˢʰᵉ ʷᵃˢ ᶠˡᶦʳᵗᶦⁿᵍ ʷᶦᵗʰ ʰᶦᵐ!")
"Lo siento, pero no vendemos ese tipo de flores-" ("ᴵ'ᵐ ˢᵒʳʳʸ, ᵇᵘᵗ ʷᵉ ᵈᵒⁿ'ᵗ ˢᵉˡˡ ᵗʰᵒˢᵉ ᵗʸᵖᵉ ᵒᶠ ᶠˡᵒʷᵉʳˢ-" ) you were interrupted.
"¡NO! ¡Esta es una florería donde mi novio las compró! ¡¿Dónde está la zorra que le dio esto a mi novio?!" Her words dripped with venom, and you felt your eyebrow twitch, but you maintained your calm demeanor, the smile still plastered on your face. ("ᴺᴼ! ᵀʰᶦˢ ᶦˢ ᵃ ᶠˡᵒʷᵉʳ ˢʰᵒᵖ ᵐʸ ᵇᵒʸᶠʳᶦᵉⁿᵈ ᵍᵒᵗ ᶦᵗ ᶠʳᵒᵐ! ᴺᵒʷ ʷʰᵉʳᵉ ᶦˢ ᵗʰᵉ ˢᵏᵃⁿᵏ ʷʰᵒ ᵍᵃᵛᵉ ᵗʰᵉˢᵉ ᵗᵒ ᵐʸ ᵇᵒʸᶠʳᶦᵉⁿᵈ!!")
"Lamentablemente señora, no sabemos quién le vendió esas flores a su novio, ¿tiene usted un recibo” ("ᵁⁿᶠᵒʳᵗᵘⁿᵃᵗᵉˡʸ ᵐᵃ'ᵃᵐ, ʷᵉ ᵈᵒ ⁿᵒᵗ ᵏⁿᵒʷ ʷʰᵒ ˢᵒˡᵈ ᵗʰᵒˢᵉ ᶠˡᵒʷᵉʳˢ ᵗᵒ ʸᵒᵘʳ ᵇᵒʸᶠʳᶦᵉⁿᵈ, ᵈᵒ ʸᵒᵘ ʰᵃᵛᵉ ᵃ ʳᵉᶜᵉᶦᵖᵗ?")
"Por qué demonios-" ("ᵂʰʸ ᵗʰᵉ ʰᵉˡˡ-")
""Si no lo haces, entonces debo pedirte que te vayas."(“ᴵᶠ ʸᵒᵘ ᵈᵒⁿ’ᵗ, ᵗʰᵉⁿ ᴵ ᵐᵘˢᵗ ᵃˢᵏ ʸᵒᵘ ᵗᵒ ˡᵉᵃᵛᵉ.")
Her indignation was palpable as she raised the arm clutching the flowers, and you braced yourself, is this chick gonna do what you think she's gonna do. With a swift motion, she swung her arm down, aiming to strike you with the sharp thorns. Instinctively, you released Hae-soo's hand and seized the woman's wrist with a firm grip.
"Por favor, vete ahora." ("ᴾˡᵉᵃˢᵉ ˡᵉᵃᵛᵉ, ⁿᵒʷ.")Your eyes narrowed into slits, trying to channel the intensity of a movie villain, you think it worked cause she seemed like she was gonna shit her pants; she struggled in your grasp, shaking you off, the flowers tumbling from her grasp. Taking a few steps back, she muttered under her breath, "Perra loca...." Stomping off as the door's bells jingled in her wake, you stuck out your tongue, retorting, "You're the crazy puta.” ( “ᵇᶦᵗᶜʰ”) You scoffed. (“ᶜʳᵃᶻʸ ᵇᶦᵗᶜʰ...”)
How infuriating.
"Um..." a soft, hesitant voice broke the silence beside you, drawing your attention to Haesoo, who remained nestled in your embrace. Her face was mere inches from yours, and while she appeared to look much more at ease, she was still shaken.
Ah, maybe cause you were squeezing her tight against you to the point her chest was squishing against yours creating an overwhelming closeness. The warmth of her body was pressed against yours was almost overwhelming. Her wide, expressive eyes seemed to drift into a distant haze, while her delicate lips formed a subtle frown that tugged at your heart.
Jesus fucking christ her boobs are just so-
What the hell am I thinking!
You lifted your hands up in the air like her body burned your skin, "I'm so sorry!!" your cheeks flushing a deep crimson as you averted your gaze, feeling as though you had stumbled upon something you weren’t meant to witness, "I didn't mean to touch you without your consent; it's just that I was worried that lady was gonna-"
"No! It’s not that, it’s just..." Her voice cut through your flustered ramble and as you lowered your hands, you turned your head to meet her gaze. To your surprise, she appeared more bashful than upset, her head bowed in a gesture of humility. "I’m sorry for not being any help," she murmured, her tone soft and laden with sincerity. You gasped hard, feeling your soul left your body, "Oh my goodness! Please raise your head! There's no need to apologize something when you did nothing wrong!" You were more embarrassed that an older women, like her, was bowing to someone younger, like you.
"I should be thanking you and I'm sorry you had to deal with a person like that, conflict is one of the most difficult situations we face because it thrusts us out of our comfort zone, don't feel the need to apologize so please raise your head Haesoo," you urged, your heart swelling with empathy for her.
She raised her gaze to meet yours, and as your words washed over her, a sense of calm enveloped her. The tension in her shoulders eased, and the frown that had etched itself on her lips began to fade. Her hands came together in front of her, fingers nervously intertwining as she spoke, "Thank you for your help. If there's any way I can repay you, please let me know." There was a shyness in her demeanor, a timidity that hinted at the weight of her thoughts, as if she were perpetually lost in her own world.
Yet, the sudden outburst from a customer jolted her back to reality, the harshness of the shouting ringing in her ears, though the words were lost on her. She struggled to appease the irate woman, but nothing seemed to work, and soon tears pricked at her eyes while her hands trembled uncontrollably. A wave of helplessness washed over her; she didn't know what to do, she needed to do something to fix this but what? What could she do, she can't even fix her relationship how can she do this. The air thickened around her, her vision blurred, and her mind spiraled with despair—she can't, she can't fix this.
But then, the warmth of your hands enveloped hers, and your presence shattered the oppressive atmosphere that had weighed so heavily on her. The burdens that had felt suffocating began to lift, and as she watched you effortlessly converse with the lady in a language with ease, a flicker of hope ignited within her. Your eyes met hers, and a reassuring smile broke through the tension;
Everything is gonna be okay.
Is what your smile said.
Haeso felt...
She felt protected, she felt safe. Even though it was such a simple touch on the shoulder and on her trembling hands, she just melted into you. Those small gestures, so seemingly insignificant—transforming her anxiety into a comforting warmth—meant everything at that moment.
You shook you head, a playful grin spreading across your face. "There's no need, anyone sensible would do that for someone in your position," you admitted, a sudden wave of shyness washing over you as you absentmindedly scratched the back of your neck. "And if you ever need someone to give those pesky customers a good scare, just say the word—I'm totally your girl," you added with a cheeky wink, feeling your cheeks start to burn.
Ah, I’m so cringe.
Despite the countless hours spent in the same space, you had never really engaged in a meaningful conversation with Haesoo. You had always assumed she preferred her solitude or the chatting with Jeong, which often consisted of the young girl doing most of the talking while Haesoo listened quietly.
Yet, as you looked into her eyes, you couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to her than met the eye. As cliche as it sounds.
Haesoo had an air of mystery about her, a quiet strength that intrigued you.
Your eyes glazed over at her, as you wonder what she was like outside of work.
────────────────────────
The days you saw Haesoo you greeted her and when there was downtime you made light conversations that never ventured too deep, careful not to probe too much into her life, as her responses often carried a hint of hesitation. It was as if she wore a veil over her thoughts, keeping herself at a distance, and you respected that unspoken boundary.
"I finished up over here with the pre-orders, need a hand with yours?" You glanced over at Haesoo, who paused momentarily to look at your end of the table, every flower prepped and wrapped up neatly, "You really are fast," she awes before looking back at the remaining flowers that haven’t been finished, shrugging you took the untouched blooms from her side and began to arrange them, "I majored in art back in college, cause I thought I wanted to do something with that. I was wanted to find something that would help me be able to express myself back then. So the alluring of colors, shapes, and the stories they could tell captivated me. I wanted to share my vision with others and I thought I was convinced that this would be my passion, but that didn't really happen in the end."
Jeez college seemed like forever ago.
Haesoo listened carefully, her ears perking up, "You want to become an artist?" She folded the cellophane wrap on the table, glancing at the flowers you had completed. "Hmm, I did. But now I'm not sure what I want to do," you admitted, grabbing the back of your neck and titled your head to the side, feeling satisfied after hearing a pop.
"Now, I'm unsure of my future, I feel a little lost so I don't know what I want to do right now, kind of losing hope to be honest," you joked at the end, but it held some truth, Haesoo fell silent, which made you wondered if you overshared-
"Don't worry about the future; you should enjoy the present while you're young," she finally said
Haesoo pauses for a minute, "But, I hope you can create the future you want as well," she added, her gaze drifting into the distance, as if she was thinking something more about than she had said. Her eyes always look like they have something yearning, that’s what you thought anyway.
"I will try my best," you replied, giving her a cheeky smile as you nodded in agreement, but after that, a comfortable silence enveloped you both, leaving the air thick with unspoken thoughts.
You glanced at the clock hanging on the wall, a sense of urgency washing over you as you sprang to your feet, "I have to get going," you exclaimed, hastily wiping your hands on your apron for the umpteenth time, but the faint of green stained your fingers still. Haesoo looked up, unexpected at your sudden leaving, "You have a short shift?" Haesoo looked up from her work, surprise flickering across her face at your abrupt departure. "Do you have a short shift today?" she inquired, her hands deftly adding the final touches to a vibrant bouquet.
You nodded, removing your apron and balled it up half hazardly, "Yeah, I have another job and my boss isn't very lenient about the schedule, so I have to be there on time whenever he calls for me." You lowered your gaze, a hint of regret creeping into your voice. "I’m really sorry I can’t stick around to help you finish up." The thought of leaving her despite not being alone still tugged at your conscience, but the clock was relentless, and you could already feel the weight of your next responsibility pressing down on you.
Haesoo waved her hands in front of her, "No need to apologizes," she reassured you, her understanding nature shining through like sunlight breaking through clouds. "I completely get it. You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do. Besides, you helped me so much,” She returned her focus to the bouquet, her fingers dancing among the petals as she arranged them with care. "Just make sure you take a moment to breathe, okay? You’re doing so much already."
You appreciated her kindness, but the urgency of your situation loomed large. "Thanks, Haesoo. I promise I’ll make it up to you. Maybe I can come in early tomorrow to help open?" You offered, hoping to ease the guilt that gnawed at you.
"That sounds perfect," she replied her voice laced with gratitude. "Just don’t overwork yourself. You need to take care of you too."
With a pep in your step, you felt a spark of giddiness in your chest, "I will! I’ll see you tomorrow!" You called over your shoulder as you rushed toward the door.
Haesoo's gaze lingered at where you had just disappeared, an unexpected wave of loneliness crashing over her like a sudden storm. It felt as though a piece had been whisked away, leaving behind a hollow ache. Like she had forgotten something a long time ago and wanted to see it once more, and she found herself closing her eyes, lost in contemplation. What was this strange sensation that had crept in so swiftly? Just moments ago, she had felt perfectly content, completely fine a second ago.
"I will try my best," you had said, your smile bright.
In that instant, Haesoo's heart raced, a wild drumbeat that seemed to drown out the world around her. She opened her eyes, her palms instinctively pressing against her chest as if to steady the tumult within. Confusion swirled in her mind; why did the mere thought of you send her spiraling into a dizzying mix of emotions?
"Unnie! We have customers!" Jeong's voice cut her thoughts.
"C-Coming!.." Haesoo called out softly, she looked down at her hands, remembering your warmed hands that touched hers. She remembered they were stained with green from the flowers, your fingers and knuckles having small cuts and scabs, and the smell of blue gum lingering on your hands. A small pout fell on her lips;
She wished she could've talked more with you.
To be continued…

I need someone to hear me out quick— alight , hear me out. 👀 So the majority of us are who plays love and deepspace are gen z and we are born between 1995 and 2012, right? The in game timeline takes place around 2048.. so if we do the math, we will all be in our early-mid 40s!! .·°՞(≧□≦)՞°·.
Now, have you heard of this Manhwa: Tears on the Withered Rose? If not that's alr— what if there's will be a timeline where the mc(us) is her early 40s and the LI are basically the same age in game, what do you think the relationship dynamic will be like? If we follow the characters roles in Tears on the Withered Rose, Na Hae-Soo in the Mc and Sylus is Beom Tae-ha. (⚆_⚆)
Y'ALL HEAR ME OUT?? :000
Edit: my friend has just informed me that this emoji means that you're weeping .·°՞(≧□≦)՞°·. (I'm assuming at the idea of eventually being in your early-mid forties?) And I'm not there quite yet, but I can assure you, you will still be you in your mid-forties, in the same fundamental way that you feel like you're you now. Hopefully you'll be a little wiser, a little more knowledgeable about the world, but it's fucking great getting older. I wouldn't go back to being 25 if someone paid me. So if anyone is despairing regarding aging, please don't worry about it, life tends to get better instead of worse as you gain experience.
Anyway.
I haven't read Tears on the Withered Rose, but if it has an older MC then I am definitely interested and will have to check it out. I'm a little older than the typical demographic for LADS and for most mainstream romance protagonists, so I am always interested in stories where MC is a little older, while still retaining the same swoon-worthy tropes that make romance fun in the first place.
I'd like to preface this answer by acknowledging that most cultures still judge men dating younger woman and women dating younger men with a double standard. Which is bullshit. The only metric we should judge relationships by are the ability to give true consent and if the people involved have a healthy power/maturity dynamic. But I'm not here to write a treatise on the ethics of age-gap romances, but the following answer acknowledges the reality that society at large may give the "younger" men and older MC the side-eye upon discovering their romantic relationship.
So for the LADS guys... we have an 800 year old fish-man, an immortal dragon, a cardiac surgeon who was born a curmudgeon and has been an old man ever since he was a kid, and a prince that has lived for at least 200 years. So let's just take a minute to soak in, and then conveniently ignore, the inherent age-gap between these old men in pretty boy bodies + 24 year old MC. But, because of who these men actually are, I think that their and an older MC's dynamic would be similar to what it is now, but MC is likely at Captain Jenna's professional level or above, higher in the administration of the Hunter's Association, has the weight of management/administrative responsibilities, possibly a shitty ex husband and all the baggage that entails, maybe a couple of kids she's doing her best to co-parent with said shitty ex. And yet each of the LIs would be the same- the weight of past lives, of memory, of their love for her. Sylus would still feign smug arrogance, utter self-containment, while doing everything he can to attract and retain MC's interest. Xavier would still share the work connection but possibly be a subordinate under MC, which could complicate their relationship in a different but still similar way to being in a relationship with a coworker as the current MC, but he'd still be the sweet guy next door, always there to have MC's back. Zayne would still be her physician, still end up violating all sorts of medical ethical regulations to develop their relationship, still mature and slow to thaw but warm and incredibly loving as their relationship grows. And I'm so sorry, I like Rafayel, but I have not interacted with him enough in game to describe more than surface level what their dynamic is other than he too would be the same with a 40-something MC.
Only people on the outside looking in would lift an eyebrow, and then the LIs would confuse the fuck out of everyone by joking about how someone's robbing the cradle in their relationship, but it sure as hell isn't her. Except, even with my limited knowledge of Raf I can definitely see him playing up the 'age difference' and pretending that MC just took advantage of his poor little meow meow naive youthful self to bag herself a cute boytoy, and I can see Sylus also driving MC nuts by really leaning into the "She criminally stole my innocence" and "Oh, she's my sugar mama" shticks when people dare to say something when he's the immortal one and it's still his black card in her wallet that's paying for her spas when he insists she needs a break (even though she earns enough to pay for herself, but he insists), and if she has kids, his new adopted kids' expensive sports gear and elite summer camps.
Now that you've sent this ask, I think it would be really, really fun to write this dynamic, actually, especially Sylus since he's my big bias and he'd be so infuriatingly charming for an older, exhausted MC, especially one who has a shitty ex who put her through the wringer and who is skittish at the idea of accepting the lavish, unconditional love of a gorgeous, wealthy, "younger" man who is also a fucking mafia boss. And in return I think a more emotionally experienced MC would more quickly see through his facade, and see the vulnerable dragon underneath, and would be able to care for him in return. Thank you for this fun ask!
#sara answers#don't come at me for not knowing more about raf please#or for how i characterize the other lads#i love poking fun at all of them#including my fav the biggest lovely loser of them all#thank you for this ask#this is going to stick in my head#i doubt people would read it if i wrote it though#since you're right about the demographics of players and people reading fic skew towards early twenty-somethings#thank you for coming to my ted talk#edited for the fifth time because my anxiety would not stop making me cringe about my irritated comments regarding aging and sylus

I NEED TO VENT CAUSE!! OMGGGG! The manhwa I’m currently reading just BLEW my mind and I need to share it!
But one, there is kissing here and spoilers for the latest chapter of Tears on a Withered Flower, so I’m putting a “Read More” section for anyone who doesn’t unwillingly want to be exposed to any of that.
So, warning, warning! Hot kissing and spoilers for Tears on a Withered Flower 🥀
Warning!
Warning
Warn-
Okay, let’s get on with it, shall we?

Y’all ever shake in your boots when the other person receiving the kiss doesn’t so much as fuckin’ BREATH when the other person mustered up the confidence to kiss them. It fuckin’ terrifies me!

I’d like to personally thank the author for not letting Na Hae-Soo be rejected and for giving us one of the hottest manhwa kiss panels I have ever witnessed. Maybe it’s cause the characters are so hot, or the tension being released was fuckin’ amazing, or cause the motions they’re dong is so fuckin’ sexy, but for whatever reason, I was laughin’ and gigglin’ like a fuckin’ BANSHEE!! WAAAAHHH!
You cannot tell me this man hasn’t kissed anyone before, cause his technique is fuckin’ pro level!

I can fuckin’ breath hoe!! THE HAND PLACEMENT IS INSANE!! The hand on her chin and face!? ASGSJAFJSGA!! And the one so close to her fuckin’ ass?? * faints * I NEED TO BE SEDATED CAUSE THIS IS JUST TOO MUCH!!

The way they’re looking at each other, OMGGG! They’re giving each other bedroom eyes!! I cannot wait for the chapter when they actual fuck, it’s gonna be so damn hot and sexy!
—
Side note -
I don’t usually appreciate drunk kisses, especially when one of them is drunk and the other isn’t cause 1. Someone is gonna forget it happened OR they’re gonna pass it along as a drunken mistake, and 2. When one is drunk and the other isn’t, it feels like such a difference in advantage.
However, I know that drinking can sometimes bring out confidence to do something you wouldn’t typically do, which is why I appreciate that Na Hae-Soo initiated the kiss, that Beom Tae-Ha didn’t IMMEDIATELY go for the kiss, that he stopped when he asked her to stop, AND that he didn’t do anything further when he laid her in bed. Respect, respect! Thank you to the author for not making their first kiss an SA case.

tags: josei, drama, younger man, older woman, divorce
status: ongoing
this manhwa is beautiful, well written, and excellently placed. im personally not a huge fan of older FL younger ML and i rarely keep up with ongoing updates, but TOAWF has me hooked! there's mystery, suspense, romance, shitty relationships, and abusive parents, pretty much everything I look for in a toxic manhwa. not to say their blooming relationship is toxic, while he IS hiding that he's a rich boy and possibly a gangster (still unknown at this time) he treats her likes she's an angel. i think? it's complicated.
we start off meeting Hae-soo at 30ish as she contemplates her failing relationship. she's concerned he's cheating (he is) with a much younger woman. she sees youth around her and wonders when she became so tired and worn out. she has been working multiple jobs non stop ever since she became an adult, as her husband, Mincheol, took out a loan under her name without telling her. though they split up due to the debt, they still live together and are in a relationship. she now is disillusioned with life, barely hanging on, and not sure which direction to go.

then, we meet our ML, 21 year old Beom Tae-Ha. Hae-Soo finds out that he has been coming to her flower shop job daily while she's working to buy roses, but she hasn't noticed until now.
Tae-Ha is a bit of a mystery still. we know that he is hiding that he's rich from Hae-Soo, has subordinates, and has a very particular family that is prone to violence and the occasional murder. he's definitely the obsessive type, and follows Hae-Soo around like a lovesick puppy despite knowing she's with Mincheol. he has manipulative tendencies but never seems to lie or use them on Hae-Soo directly, but definitely does indirectly... overall, he's complicated, dark, and secretive. and very, very attractive.

Mincheol Kang is... complicated. he is Hae-Soo's high school sweetheart, first love, and savior. while in the present he is cold and detached, resentful of Hae-Soo, they used to be a very sweet couple. he still clearly cares for her somewhere deep down in his fucked up heart, but the pain he is putting her through is NOT worth anything he could give her. especially since he is actively cheating on her with a younger woman. ugh.
the best way to sum up their relationship is exactly how the manhwa put it in chapter 30:
"Our youth was always full of bruises, just turning blue. Even in the muddy struggles of misfortune, you were there. Tonight, I'd gladly burn away in this blue youth. And... The place we've burned and left behind."
god. what beautiful writing. what an absolute asshole of a guy.
overall, worth a read if you enjoy relationship drama, obsessive men, and a sad FL who is finally being treated kindly after a horrible relationship. so right up my alley! and i cannot state enough how fantastic and visual the writing is. whoever did the translations on templescans, props to you!!!
this review was written at the release of ch 35.
rating:
romance 8/10
plot 10/10
overall 9/10

[Countdown to 2021] Top 5 Kdrama of 2020
This past year of what was undoubtedly an absolutely horrendous year of 2020--for a variety of reasons--I can honestly say that one of the reasons why I stayed sane was because of Kdrama. Being at home all day, even for an extreme homebody for me, can get harrowing because the choice of going out or not was taken from me when my area went into lockdown.
And so....to Kdrama it is. I think that 2020 was one of the very few years that I’ve seen nearly all of the Kdrama that aired on MBC, SBS, KBS, TvN, and jTBC...which is....a lot, I’ve come to realize. That brought me to think--which would I consider my top 5?
Hmmm.....Well, here I go.
Please note that my top 5 are not in any particular order. Each one that made it to my top 5 is beloved for a completely different reason. I also don’t go down the critic route and pick apart the direction, the story, yada yada. I just made this list purely on how much I enjoyed them and how much they’ve made an impression on me.
(SPOILERS AHEAD.)
#5 -- The Tale of the Nine-Tailed
Starring Lee Dong Wook, Jo Bo Ah, Kim Beom, Hwang Hee

I like Lee Dong Wook as a Grim Reaper, and I like Lee Dong Wook as a gumiho/nine-tailed fox. What can I say?
That being said, The Tale of the Nine-Tailed was really about Kim Beom’s character Rang. He started as a villain (sort of), then became a reluctant ally (sort of), and then met his end with a smile. He redeemed himself throughout the entire drama, and I shed a lot of tears in the final episode, because he finally was afraid to die because he had something to live for, but his desire for his brother to come back was so strong that he’d gladly give up the remaining time he had, stolen as it was, to give his big brother a final gift. His sacrifice made an impact more with me than any other character because it was so out of character for him, and yet not. His choice wasn’t unexpected, and yet I felt like a train wreck when I finally saw it on the screen.
#4 -- Half of a Half/A Piece of Your Mind
Starring Jung Hae In, Chae Soo Bin, Lee Ha Na, Kim Sung Kyu

Or....known as the drama that is known for being tragically cut short. Let me tell you, I loved this drama. It’s not an epic romance drama by any means, but the tone of the drama was really calming and healing, which is basically the premise--two lonely souls grieving find solace in one another.
I do wish that they didn’t drag the mystery of “Who is the husband?” for so long, but I enjoyed the dynamics between Moon Ha Won and Ha Seo Woo so much that I really didn’t mind it. I really wished that they would’ve kept the original run of 16 episodes instead of slashing it to a mere 12, because it really limited the writer and directors to wrap up the story, but I also do think that if they went with the 16-episode route we would definitely have the noble idiocy trope inserted, some way or another, instead of the really lovely way that Seo Woo wanted distance from a devastated Ha Won, to get over her sadness and fear of happiness, in order to run to him.
#3 -- The Flower of Evil
Starring Lee Jun Ki, Moon Chae Won, Jang Hee Jin, Seo Hyun Woo

If Kairos was a suspense drama, The Flower of Evil was definitely a thriller teetering on the edges of horror. My God, this drama scared the living daylights out of me. Lee Jun Ki as a (alleged) sociopath I could see, considering that he acted a similar role in the drama-that-must-not-be-named, but in the flashbacks his serial killer father’s eyes was enough for me to shut my laptop and just breathe.
....And that was before the introduction of Kim Ji Hoon’s character.
Lee Jun Ki is the main lead, and the story focuses on him, but the one who shone in this drama was definitely Kim Ji Hoon. I’ve watched Kim Ji Hoon over the years, and I am somewhat convinced that his sudden appearance as a very psychopathic killer will jump out at my screen and strangle me in my chair. It’s very different from his usual roles and, my God, I am looking forward what he’ll choose for his next project.
#2 -- The King: Eternal Monarch
Starring Lee Min Ho, Kim Go Eun, Kim Kyung Nam, Woo Do Hwan

Ah, the epic modern-Korean monarchy...but with a twist of parallel universes, and more! (Let’s sprinkle in time travel while we’re at it!)
I think that this is the one drama in 2020 where I was simultaneous satisfied that it was finished, and yet still full of unanswered questions. Like, how does a cross-universe couple happen? Especially with doppelgängers?? And why can only certain people remember what happened??? What happens now????
Putting that aside, The King: Eternal Monarch had one major flaw: Lee Rim, played by veteran Lee Jung Jin. I felt that they completely his potential as a very potent villain in the interest of creating an epic love story. I did love the Lee Gon-Jung Tae Eul couple and chemistry (which they did, contrary to some people’s opinions), and it was the characters that really stayed with me--i.e. Jo Young/Jo Eun Sup. Woo Do Hwan really outdid him in both his characters. He nearly convinced me that it was two different actors play two characters!
And...now to #1.
#1 -- Do You Like Brahms?
Starring Park Eun Bin, Kim Min Jae, Kim Sung Chul, Park Ji Hyun

OK....I said that I loved each drama differently, right? Ahahaha....yeah, all lies. If I were to pick just ONE drama of the year, it’d be Do You Like Brahms?
How many ways can I wax poetic about this one? I am still obsessed with this drama, and so very happy that Kim Min Jae and Park Eun Bin won the Best Couple Award for this drama at this year’s SBS Drama Awards. I have my gripes about the drama, but they don’t in any way outweigh the highs.
I just loved the respect and communication between Park Joon Young and Chae Song Ah, both before as acquaintances/friends/comrades in respective unrequited loves, and afterwards as the giddy, heart-fluttering moments as a couple. They understood each other, and accepted one another, as two people experiencing the same pain. They didn’t try to sugarcoat it or hide it behind a smile, which they did towards everyone else. Even with Joon Young’s missed opportunities to communicate, Song Ah tried her very best, when she clearly told him that she didn’t appreciate being in the dark, and that she wanted to lean on him. I also loved how in the drama, their words and actions mirrored one another, in the way that they confessed their feelings, and asked the other to wait--not a rejection, but for an opportunity to catch up.
Honorable Mention -- Forest
Starring Park Hae Jin, Jo Bo Ah, No Gwang Sik, Jung Yeon Joo

I really like Park Hae JIn, and I really like Jo Bo Ah, so put them together? Yep, we have Forest--a drama that mixes romance, mystery(?), and the proverbial forest. The drama did fall kind of flat, which was a disappointment, considering how much news I’ve heard about it, and the villains didn’t get as much development they needed to seem as “evil” they should be.
One of my favorite lines of the drama I think will stay as one of my favorites is a line made by Park Hae Jin’s Kang Sang Hyeok in the final episode (yes, I know): “The reason why I’m acting like this now...is solely because of my personal revenge--the sacred sense of duty that you think I have...I don’t.” He acknowledges his wrongdoing and is making amends, but he doesn’t apologize or try to coat his actions as anything but self-serving. He’s not someone who immediately changes due to the power of love, but takes it slowly.
