Danderyd Ch D F: Julian Cash/Bart Stevens [1] def. Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan/N. Vijay Sundar Prashanth 6-7(7), 6-4, [10-7] Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP Challenger Livestream
A little difference could be found between both pairs throughout the match, especially on return. The match was return-oriented enough for both pairs to come down to which pair nailed the pressure points more and used the rhythm to their advantage, where Cashvens had the balance necessary to stand out in the second set and the match tie-break. Even if Jeevan/Vijay tried to press from their first strikes as well, as evident in the first set tie-breaker, but it was insufficient for them to carry them toward the end of the other sets. As a result, Cashvens had 12 opportunities to break and converted 5 of them despite Jeevan/Vijay’s 40% break point conversion rate throughout the match.
On the other hand, Cashvens appeared a little bit more solid on serve. Scoring 7 more aces than Jeevan/Vijay, Cashvens won 11% more points from their first serves with a 69% winning percentage. Interestingly, there was a tiny difference in their second serves winning percentage, with Cashvens having the slight edge by 2%, winning 45% of their points from there even if they double-faulted 7 times, 2 more than Jeevan/Vijay implying the riskiness of the former's second serve, but it paid off at the end of the match.
This marked J. Cash's fourth Challenger title of the year, winning it with three different partners (once with Henry Patten back in Sarasota Challenger pre-divorce, twice with Robert Galloway, including a title in Malaga Challenger, and once with Yuki Bhambri), while this marked B. Stevens' second Challenger title after the Bahrain Challenger (with Patrik Niklas-Salminen). This could add interesting input to J. Cash's post-divorce doubles partner carousel after the divorce with H. Patten, but this solidified J. Cash's finish inside the Top 50 at 47 live.

The match tie-break became even neater once things kicked in. The first few points were intense with several mini-breaks exchanged in between until J. Cash's important smash in the 12th point after their service game hold resulted in their mini-break lead to 7-5, and they had not looked back since. Even though their match point was foiled thanks to Jeevan/Vijay's working serve+1, an epic match point conversion ended with J. Cash's forehand winner, even though B. Stevens fell somewhere in the middle after his volley, allowing Cashvens to win the match tie-break 10-7, as well as taking the title for their first Challenger title together as a pair.

Cashvens visibly stepped up their game in the second set, where they started with an early break thanks to their working volley to Jeevan/Vijay's failed volley error to set up their 2-point lead earlier before J. Cash's forehand let cord moment converted the said break point to 1-0. Even if Cashvens held their service game to 2-0 afterward, Jeevan/Vijay hung on by holding their service game 2-1, and had a backhand lob to set a one-point lead several points before they broke back to 2-2.
Interestingly, this part of the set became return-oriented just like the first set when a working smash from Cashvens several moments after Jeevan slipped post-volley opened the gate for them to start that return game, breaking back to 3-2 as a result. Somehow, Jeevan/Vijay created their break point in the subsequent game thanks to a working smash, converting it with a forehand return ace to 3-3, followed by two consecutive service game holds.
In the ninth game, the return game turned out to be in Cashvens' favor as they ended up nailing the pace well while optimizing the open court. J. Cash's backhand to Jeevan/Vijay's volley error was a gate-opener before B. Stevens' forehand pass to the open court resulted in the creation of their break point, ultimately breaking their service game to 5-4. As a result, they had the opportunity to serve for the second set, where they nailed their service game and had a 0-hold to take the second set 6-4, bringing the match to the further distance through a match tie-break to determine the outcome.

Concluding the day in today’s Danderyd Challenger is the doubles final between the first seeds, Julian Cash/Bart Stevens (hereby referred to as Cashvens), who defeated N. Sriram Balaji/Andre Begemann 6-1, 7-6(5) in the quarterfinals and third seeds Patrik Niklas-Salminen/Petr Nouza 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals, and second seeds Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan/N. Vijay Sundar Prashanth, who previously defeated Maximilian Neuchrist/Denis Yevseyev 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals and Johannes Ingildsen/Eero Vasa 6-4, 7-6(5) also in highly competitive encounters. Knowing both pairs, this could possibly be a close encounter, which turned out to deliver in one way or another.
After three consecutive holds to start the match, Jeevan/Vijay struck first from their forehand side, where they successfully pressed Cashvens from the baseline until the latter had to save 2 break points before Jeevan's smash secured the deciding point, where they eventually broke to 3-1 in the first set. Interestingly, Jeevan/Vijay consolidated their lead to 3-2, but Cashvens had other ideas from their return games, volleying their way to secure their 2-point lead before they broke back to 3-3 thanks to their swift forehand return on the break point. This was responded to by Jeevan/Vijay by breaking back again to 4-3 thanks to their working volleys, but Cashvens also responded through J. Cash's working forehand to secure the 4-4 break-back.
Cashvens eventually held his service game to 5-4, and then both players kept holding their service games until the first set tie-break became inevitable. During the first set tie-breaker, Cashvens initially had their momentum thanks to J. Cash's swift forehand return to Jeevan/Vijay's failed volley to 2-1 before they held their service games to 3-1. Somehow, they found their set points foiled at the cost of Jeevan/Vijay's unreturned serves and swift forehand return, resulting in the side-switching to 6-6. It took two other consecutive holds before J. Cash's double fault right at the end of the set resulted in Jeevan/Vijay taking the first set 7-6(7).

Split Ch D QF: Kalin Ivanovski/Luka Mikrut [WC] def. Mariano Navone/Juan Bautista Torres 6-2, 6-4 mid-match stats (2nd set)
Tumblr media
📸 ATP Challenger Livestream (via website)
Both the effective serves and working finishing were the key to prevail in this match. Navone/Bautista Torres tried to raise their level, which was often visible at the net, but it wasn't sufficient because of the service games consistency from Kalin/Mikrut.
Even if Kalin/Mikrut only scored 1 ace to Navone/Bautista Torres' 3, their first serves did more damage by winning 86% of their points from there (thanks to unreturned serves, but not the rushes). On the other hand, Navone/Bautista Torres' second serves were not there as they double-faulted thrice, hence they were 12% points behind in winning from their second serves.
On the other hand, the return games went interesting. Even though Navone/Bautista Torres had 100% break point conversion rate, this was a fruition of their ability to absorb Kalin/Mikrut's pace, especially from the net. Furthermore, Kalin/Mikrut converted 66% of their break points since they controlled the flow, from the net initially and broke again with a winner nearby. A working balance, for sure.
In the semifinals, Kalin/Mikrut will face Indian pair Anirudh Chandrasekhar/N. Vijay Sundar Prashanth, who advanced after Diego Hidalgo/Cristian Rodriguez withdrew (get well soon to either of them). Well, Anirudh/Vijay is the more experienced pair here, which makes this match an exciting encounter in itself!
