I'm nålbinding a hat for a friend, in Korgen stitch (FS 1+2 F1), tentatively hoping to get it done for his birthday next month, but... well, I'm dealing with time, body and energy restraints, so I won't push me and he'll get it whenever it's finished. He won't need it in summer anyway xD
Anyway, le hat has a bump at the top!
I didn't make the bump on purpose it just happened, and I think it did so for 2 reasons:
First, my counting was off bc of how I used the stitch marker. I was still figuring that out and it is still kinda complicated because i still don't know the structure well enough to say "if I bind into this loop from the last round, this corresponds to this loop in the new round i'm making".
I dohave figured out a way now that still goes mainly by vibes, but is a little more precise I think.
Second reason for the bump, is my tension. It's gotten more, well, tense, which you can actually see in this picture of the wrong side of the hat:
Tumblr media
The bump has much looser stitches, and the rest of the fabric is denser!
And that's because i started pulling a little on the "off-thumb loop" of the Korgen stitch, so that it's like half way between "thumb thickness" and "thick end of the bone needle thickness".
So that's a thing I learned from this hat, and I'm very happy with it :D
I am pondering whether to remove the bump, like, cutting it out and putting in a flat center, or not. Leaning on leaving it in for the time being, because I don't know if i want to put the extra hassle on myself, also it doesn't look that weird on the head.
By the way, the round I'm doing now?
It's the *stitch 12, increase* repeat ** round x_X I have never had this many increase rounds with a hat before, and I am 100% sure that there's so many counting errors in there xD
Sometimes I start a stitch, counting, and when I finish the stitch I don't remember what I counted! Like, I do have the RAM of a goldfish sometimes o_O But! One day I will have figured out how to "read" the fabric, so that I can find that last increase and count again from there! xD
Counting stitches is my nemesis, and projects that involve a lot of counting, always take the longest time.
I'll be so glad once the increase counting is over omg xD
So, yeah, that's my current WIP ^_^

finally getting the hang of nålbinding. this is using a merino yarn I spun a year ago and then left sitting as I debated plying it. not my most even yarn, but it's working nicely for this.

Fiber arts update!!
First of all, some kinda bad photos of some very cool stuff I got:
(handspun by me, crocheting by my fiber arts buddy who, unlike me, can actually count to three sometimes and thus doesn't absolutely loathe crocheting)
Granny shawl: shetland/silk, shetland, merino/viscose.
I promise the colors look much better irl
Tumblr media
Lace-y scarf: Merino/silk
Tumblr media
also much prettier irl, and surprisingly warm!
Then, stash update:
Tumblr media
added 200g grey merino (for a hat for my lil' sis) and dark blue merino (for an acquaintance of my partner), and 100g purple/pink merino (for a headband for said partner's dad) and 100g multicolor merino (??? why not). Not shown: A full pound of "Polarfuchs"/dark grey Icelandic, and another 100g of the blue sparkle merino.
Advent calendar update, days 8-10:
Tumblr media
linen (or, more precisely, dyed tow flax), merino (VERY GREEN), merino (VERY VERY PINK!!)
Doodad Update:
Bone needle (for soon-to-be nålbinding attempts), and a yarn gauge (it was surprisingly hard to find something that didn't have to get shipped internationally)
Tumblr media
The other side of the yarn gauge can also measure twist angle.
And, last but not least, progress on my marathon christmas spin:
Tumblr media
200g of blue sparkle merino singles, and 25g of pink/purple stuff. Gonna finish the other 75g of that, and then it'll be on to plying!
(bobbins are modified Ashford weaving bobbins; I know some people who use a bobbin winder and storage bobbins modify said bobbin winder to take larger-diameter bobbins, but if I have the choice to either mess with a 100$ piece of equipment or some 1$-per-piece plastic spools, I know what I'll go for)

TWO THINGS
Tumblr media
1) I’m learning Nålbinding! I went to my first SCA event last weekend (midrealm crown tourney, twas very fun) and they had a crafters corner, and I sat down for four hours on sunday while the fights were going on and was taught by a very lovely eastern europen lady. I picked it up real quick, and I’m making a hat!
2) I just successfully did my first russian join, which will make nålbinding with acrylic a hell of a lot nicer.

My SCA garb to date.
Tumblr media
I have:
One half circle cloak
One less than half circle cloak
A light linen cloak mainly for sun protection
Three shirts; green, white and grey
Two pairs of pants (now with added pockets)
A great kilt (In a heap because I am ignoring it)
Accessories include nålbinded leg warmers, mittens, hat, short socks and slippers.
The belt, belt pouch, shoes and hat were all purchased, with the hat being the only one sourced outside of the SCA.
I am lucky enough to have time, energy, machine and the skills to do my own sewing, but if someone does not then being able to source things from others is totally okay.
I will never understand people who can hand sew an entire garment; that's some serious dedication.

Won’t say that knitting has lost its appeal (it hasn’t), but I have been eyeballing nålbinding and want to revisit it since it’s been about 3 years since I made my last nålbound project. I want to knuckle through my current boring sock project (it’s all in stockinette. Why’d I do that.) so I can make something exciting in a new nålbinding stitch. Was last working the Oslo stitch, I think? ‘Twas a hat, and a gift, and I no longer have it or pictures to know for sure.
Edit: it has come to my attention that one may “knuckle down” or “muscle through”, but “knuckle through” is something that doesn’t exist. Idioms have never been easy for me. Damn the English language for all eternity, amen.

Nålbound earflap hat ! Took 2 days. It's the first nålbinding piece ive ever done (aside from a few terrible swatches) and it wasn't gonna be anything but it actually was a decent attempt, so I kept going. It's made with some of my handspun.

Check out my beanies on Etsy.
I know they're expensive, but hear me out, it takes almost a week to make one so it's going to up the price. Most of these are 100% wool unless otherwise stated.

The complete satisfaction of recycling garden waste into usable tools and making clothing from wool thread. Nålbinding is the old technique of finger knitting using the thumb and a small needle crafted from bone , wood or metal.
This hat and fingerless mitten are an example of nålbinding using the Oslo stitch which is the simplest stitch to work with. Incidentally this type of stitch can only be done by hand and can't be replicated by a machine.

Wow!!! Love the wool for the ancient mittens project!!! Did you teach yourself nålbinding? I tried teaching myself a couple years ago but I had difficulty finding good resources for learning, do you have any tips?
thank you so much!! i did!! i highly recommend checking out youtube tutorials there are a bunch if you search nålbinding and they'll teach the most common/basic stitches!! this website has also been helpful it has every stitch out there and tutorials for mittens and socks and hats, etc. its a bit difficult to navigate but once you understand the oslo stitch and the basics of nålbinding everything else comes easier. good luck!!

I have decided to learn Nalbinding. This is the first hat I have made with this technique. It is said to be the pre curser to knitting and crochet. #nålbinding #nalbinding #learning #wool https://www.instagram.com/p/CONhqR0JiXz/?igshid=oswitiu5pw4n
