“There’s a full moon rising over the Indian Ocean. Do I go back and grab my camera? Do I really want to lug round heavy and expensive equipment - after dark IN CRIME-RIDDEN SOUTH AFRICA - just to take a few flat and boring shots of the sea? Why not go to the pub instead?”

Well, after that conversation with myself, I did go back and grab my camera. I did not go to the pub. I went to the shoreline at Umhlanga and took this shot of a fisherman so still that he was this sharp - this is a 30 second exposure! - perfectly framed by a moonlit ocean contrasting with the otherworldly green of the rocks.

Swazi Lady Out of frustration and boredom, I left my house and went to town which was only 20 minutes away. I hailed a khumbi (taxi) greeted everyone and proceeded on my journey. I walked around with my camera like an amateur that I was and didn't know where to start. I took a couple pictures and proceeded to walk further into town until I saw this woman. I only knew how to communicate with so many words. I smiled and pointed to my camera with a thumbs up as a way to ask for permission. She chuckled shyly. After taking the picture I showed it to her and she smiled. It's a great feeling to be able to communicate without really communicating. (at Schoemansdal, Mpumalanga, South Africa)
