Unknown has a complicated relationship with sleep. 

He's always tired, but he never wants to admit that he needs to sleep. If you try to explain to him that everybody has to sleep at some point, he’ll only get annoyed with you. Who do you think you are to tell him what he needs? The way he sees it, he’s basically a machine anyway, so shouldn’t he at least get the benefits associated with a mechanical existence? But instead, every few days, his body forces him to sleep until his nightmares wake him up. 

He tries to stave it off as long as he can with caffeine, sugar, and cold showers. Sometimes, he’ll ask you to wake him up if he falls asleep in front of his computer— he’s never pleased about it when you refuse, but he also never retaliates. He doesn’t have the energy, and besides— at least he knows that you won’t hurt him or take advantage of his vulnerable state even when he tells you to.

Eventually, though, he has to sleep. He doesn’t like the thought of leaving you alone in the intelligence room when he’s unconscious elsewhere��� what if some believer comes in and you say something misguided that makes you wind up in the basement? What if the Savior comes by and decides to question you about Unknown’s inactivity? There are simply too many variables to account for. The easiest solution, of course, is to sleep when you sleep, although it goes without saying that he'll be waking up before you. In Unknown's opinion, you spend far too long just laying there and nowhere near enough time helping him with his revenge.

You try to baby him even on his good nights. You bring him the best, most filling dinners you can throw together with the ingredients in the kitchen; these are usually accompanied by hot beverages to counteract the biting cold of the intelligence room. You’re about the only person (aside from the Savior, of course) from whom he would accept a mysterious drink, but Unknown has to admit that he enjoys the sweet vanilla chamomile that you always serve him. Though his rational mind knows that he can’t afford to take long breaks from his work, his body is soothed by the tea. 

If he’s exhausted enough, Unknown might agree to lay down with his head in your lap and let you play with his hair as he falls asleep. It’s easy for him to spin this position as a power move— obviously, you’re giving him this attention because like him, right? You wouldn't do anything like this for any of those bastards in the RFA. You’re trying to show him affection, to thank him for saving you— Unknown can allow that. Besides, it feels nice, and isn't he allowed to enjoy simple pleasures like this in between finishing his work? It's basically the same thing as eating ice cream or sending cryptic texts in hacked RFA chatrooms.

He likes falling asleep to the sound of your voice. You can even lull him back to sleep after he’s woken up from a nightmare, if you play your cards right. Tell him how good he is while you pet his hair, but don’t you dare breathe a word to him about it when he wakes up in the morning (or, more likely, in the middle of the night). After the fact, he feels a lot less powerful and a lot more pathetic, especially if there was a nightmare involved. The thought of whimpering and whining at you when he wasn’t awake enough to stop himself makes Unknown feel a little sick. Secretly, he's grateful for both your care and your discretion, though you'd never get him to admit it aloud.

He doesn’t want to want any kind of comfort, but the more time he spends with you, the less frequently he refuses when you offer. You might even be able to get him to let you read to him— entertainment as a concept is entirely foreign to Unknown, so it’ll take him a while to figure out what kind of stories he likes to hear. Really, what he likes best is the sound of your voice and the fact that you actually listen when he expresses a boundary or a preference. If you ask very nicely and you’re very lucky, he’ll even let you kiss him on the forehead as he drifts off into dreamland. 

Even if he still only gets a few hours of sleep each night, at least he’s resting better than he was before you came to him.

Jihyun craves control in what feels like a necessary manner. He doesn’t like to have things thrust upon him without warning, doesn’t like to be out of the loop. It’s a matter of security, and that's why he scrambles to understand things at their very core. Even when he asks questions more than once, try to give him some leeway. He doesn’t mean to be overbearing or distrustful, —he simply craves details down to the marrow. It’s a tool he’s found that soothes his worries, and it’s a small price to pay for his peace.

“I’m sorry, it doesn’t seem like we have a reservation for that name,” the young woman at the front of the restaurant apologizes.

“Are you certain?” Jihyun asks, —and you can feel his grip tighten on your hand a bit, even as his tone remains incessantly polite. “I booked a table over a month in advance for our anniversary. . .”

She flips through the little booklet on the desk again, pursing her lips before shaking her head.

“I’m not sure what happened, but there’s unfortunately no tables available for this evening,” she replies. “You’re welcome to stay for a bit and see if anyone misses their reservation time, but that’s the best I can do. I’m very sorry.”

“That’s okay,” you assure her.

It’s not like she has anything to do with it. She’s just doing her job, and whatever happened, it likely wasn’t even her mistake to remedy. Moreover, it’s not like this was the end of the world. A block over there was a nice little steakhouse serving roughly similar menu items, and you’d been there on dates with Jihyun before. It might even be nice to go back and spend your second anniversary with him in a more familiar and welcoming place. . . But he felt like his head was swimming by the time he made it back outside.

His grip on your hand was unusually firm, —not painful, but more desperate than it had been a few minutes prior, and you could feel his palm getting clammy. Jihyun had always been a calm and reserved man, the type that took a while to warm up to people. At least, that’s how you’d always known him to be. Jumin told you he was a bit less reticent once upon a time, that he trusted more freely and cared more forwardly. But that was before, and things have clearly changed, and much of that change came at him in a sort of insurmountable way. It wasn’t the kind of thing anyone could prepare for, and bizarreness aside, Jihyun had by no means been afforded all the opportunities to feel safe and secure.

“Hey,” you say softly, looking up at him, “are you alright?”

The breath he utters is shaky at best, and he finds it difficult to meet your eyes.

“I’m so sorry,” he says quickly.

You barely catch the words as they spill past his lips in rapid succession.

He said them like he was sputtering out his final phrase, scared he might not have another chance to express it if he didn’t let it burst forth. 

“Sorry? —For what?” You ask, reaching up to cup his cheek in your free hand. “You don’t have anything to apologize for.”

When he looks at you, it’s like he’s seen a ghost. There’s a distant sense of fear and a few tears welling up, clumping together above his lashes.

“The table, it. . . I. . .” he tries, but the articulation doesn’t come to him.

He’s not sure what to say or how to say it, and he’s terrified of the fact that you’re being so calm, even when he knows he should be thankful for it. A part of him even thinks it might be easier if you just yelled and let him swallow your frustrations like the words he’s choking down. This gentleness is still foreign, even after all this time.

You walk with him a little ways, keeping your fingers laced with his. There’s a small community garden spot where everyone is free to come and admire the flowers, and it serves as an easy way to put some space between yourself and others strolling along the sidewalk.

“Jihyun,” you say, “it’s really okay. I’m sorry the reservation didn’t work out, but we can still have dinner down the block.”

But at this point, it’s less about any steak he’s missing out on and more about the fact that something has gone wrong in the first place. It’s out of his hands now, and he can’t stop thinking long enough to let himself drown in yours.

“I just wanted everything to be perfect,” he replies.

You kiss his frigid knuckles and look at him like he’s the only person in the world.

“I know,” you tell him. “And it might not help to say this, but I think you should know that it’s perfect to me anyway, no matter where we go. As long as I’m with you tonight, we can do anything, go anywhere, —I just love you, and as long as you’re here, I’m happy.”

Jihyun stills, and you can see the cogs turning behind his gaze, processing what you’ve said as if he finds it hard to believe. Sometimes, he forgets that this isn’t conditional. You know certain things linger longer than either of you would like, but it’s not really something he can help. Not right now. Two years doesn’t erase all the time he spent pining for forgiveness from all the wrong people in all the wrong places. Time hasn’t healed his wounds as well as he would have liked. They still pry themselves open and leave bloodtrails in his wake every now and again, and sometimes it gets on you.

He takes a breath and tries again.

“I booked the table,” he says firmly. “I remembered that you said you wanted to give the restaurant a try, but we could never find a good time, and I thought this would be the right occasion.”

You smile, because it’s sweet that he remembered such a small thing. It was a comment made in passing more than anything else, but he still cared enough not only to listen, but to keep it in mind.

“Thank you for trying,” you tell him in earnest. “But we can always book another reservation for another time.”

“It won’t be our anniversary for another year,” he explains.

“No, it won’t,” you agree, “but that’s okay, isn’t it? You brought me roses last month, and there was no special occasion for it.”

Jihyun purses his lips for a moment, then nods. He sees what you’re getting at, even though his disappointment is still palpable.

“You’re right,” he acknowledges.

“And you’re amazing,” you reply, pressing a hand against his warm chest.

He lets out a breath and pulls you closer, resting his chin on your shoulder. A wave of relief washes over you upon feeling some of the tension leave his body.

“I’m really sorry,” he says. “Things weren’t supposed to go this way.”

“There’s nothing to be sorry for,” you insist.

“Yeah. . . Maybe. I just feel like it’s my fault,” he answers.

“It’s nobody’s fault,” you mumble, pulling away just enough to cup his cheeks again, hoping he won’t mind the mild shock of your free hand’s chill. “Sometimes things just happen.”

A part of him wants to argue, but he loses that urge the moment you brush your lips against his so tenderly. It’s the kind of softness he craves when he gets a little too wound up, and you can almost feel him melt into your embrace where he stands.

“Happy anniversary, Jihyun.”

He smiles, and it reaches his eyes.

“Happy anniversary, my love.”

Heyo! I don't really often write any long posts and I don't know where to start, really. But this time I'm writing on a special occasion, Mystic messenger is now 7 years old now!

Well, first of all let me congratulate both the fans and Cheritz who gave us this wonderful game. Together we've been through meme moments, creative & traumatic moments, and we also overcame the rumour that the game would be taken off the Google play/Appstore and removed (really, do you guys know how much that scared the fandom? If anything, I think we're all looking forward to at least the 10th anniversary, and hopefully the subsequent ones if possible. Either way, prosperity to Cheritz! Thanks for surprising us all these 7 years with new artwork and more content. I just can't help but congratulate them because I'm sure that a lot of work has been done during these 7 years).

Secondly my first question after the whole 7 year anniversary thing beong announced was "how long have I been asleep?". Like yes, I've been in the fandom for probably about three years (because I remember that I caught out of all the existing anniversary screensavers only the one with cups, who remembers, remembers, and who knows, knows), but I am pleased and pleasantly surprised by the fact that the guys continue to release some content after 7 years!!!! (by the way, I like the style of the new artist, so native, so canonical, in my opinion (P.S. I love all the artists who drew screensavers and all the rest of the artwork in the game, I just could not help but note the work of the new artist, they are very cosy in my opinion).

Thirdly, look who decided to participate in an event from Cheritz for the first time ever (first time in 7 years. I've actually made attempts to participate, but you know my boneheadedness (you probably don't, because like I said, I don't write long posts often) and inability to catch up and post everything in time)? I did, of course. But I didn't find in their tumblr post the template they mentioned (I just don't use twitter (it doesn't work in my country and surprisingly it doesn't work with a VPN either), maybe the template is there), nor information about whether I should post my email or account info here... Just in case I suddenly get lucky....

Oh well, what else can I say in conclusion? I present to you Saeyoung (crying, from happiness of course) and MC in her wedding look (lol, I look similar to her in real life (I even have a meme on this topic that I'll probably post later), so I guess you could say I'm killing two birds with one stone (proverbial, no killing)). I'm glad that I was finally able to accurately portray 707 the way I imagine him in my head.

And I congratulate all of us once again on the anniversary (and on the party theme, which if not everyone, then every third person was looking forward to, I believe ;) ).

Hi Kait, I'm curious. I'm new here and would like to know why you like another story, is it your favorite timeline, do you think that timeline is better than CS or DP or do you keep them on the same level?

A while ago I had seen people saying Another Story was poorly written or bad simply and the game wouldn't need that story so it can be removed and not be part of some "canon".

What do you think? I would like to read your opinion.

I love all of Mystic Messenger, to preface. I enjoy every aspect of the story and the characters involved. I don't think that Another Story is "better" than Casual Story or Deep Story, and in the same vein, I don't think that Casual or Deep Story is "better" than Another Story. I think it comes down to preference in the end, what you like is yours to like and it doesn't have to be justified. You really don't need to justify the things you like by beating something else down in the process. It's as simple as that.

Another Story is literally what it's called. Another Story. If you don't like it, that's fine, nobody's pointing a water gun at your head telling you that you need to like it. You don't have to like it. All I ask of folks who don't like it is to tag their hate and/or criticism because it's kind of disheartening to run into blatant character hate and bashing all of the time when you're looking for fandom creations to support others who love the game as much as you do, even if it's in a different way.

Casual and Deep Story were written first. They were there from the start. But, that doesn't mean that Another Story doesn't have a right to exist and it certainly doesn't mean that people can't enjoy it. I am begging people to be kind to others when they talk about things they do and don't like, cultivate a fandom experience you like by blocking and disengaging with people who create things you don't like. That's going to save you a lot of heartache and trouble.

I love all the timelines and themes you can explore in his game. It's hard for me to say I have a "favorite". Like, Ray and SE Saeran are my favorites in terms of who I like and relate to the most, and you know, they are the most "opposite" in terms of content because they exist in very different circumstance. I've written and explored themes across the entire game time and time again, so, no, I don't hold one part of the story above another.

They are different stories, different circumstances, and different situations, and it's okay to appreciate them for their differences and enjoy them for whatever reason. You don't need to justify why you like something. Enjoy whatever you want to enjoy and don't feel like you need to force yourself to say that something is better than something else to “fit in” with others.

 Do whatever you want to do, guys, just be polite to others when the situation implores you to choose kindness. (I'm not telling you to be nice if someone is a fucking asshole, use situational awareness.)

I enjoy exploring Unknown's arc and how he comes to be SE Saeran in the end. I feel a sense of kinship with him, and that's the reason why I began to enjoy his character in the first place. I understand what he's going through and reading his words helped me feel seen when I needed it. I have an entire story about SE Saeran and Reader that's based on my original love for him that's 170k, you know!

I enjoyed meeting Ray for the first time because he, too, held onto aspects of myself that I needed comfort about. Being able to build up his self-confidence so he could be the one to figure out that he has worth as a person and he doesn't need someone to tell him that is very cathartic. It helped me and there's a reason why he's the one I gush about the most on my blog.

But, I don't place my love for these characters on a scale. I love them at all times, but sometimes I gush about one more than another just because that's who I happen to be thinking about in the moment and it could be totally different the next day. Shrug. Live your lives, guys. I don't need to justify why I like Another Story anymore than trying to justify my love of Casual or Deep Story. I like all of it.

a kitsune can only take on human form as an ability learned from a certain age, usually between 50-100 years old. in their fox form, they will often place reeds, leaves or a skull over their heads. akira has a crown of leaves in her fox form, and learned this skill when she was 60 years old. the most common forms are beautiful women, young girls and the elderly. akira appears in her beautiful, young woman form. these shapes are not limited by the fox's true age or gender. a kitsune can also mimic the appearance of different people. akira is what is known as a sacred inari kitsune. inari is a sacred shinto kami (spirit) of foxes, fertility, rice, tea & sake, agriculture and general prosperity and worldly success. inari's kitsunes are pure white and act as their messengers. they possess the power to ward off evil, and they sometimes serve as guardian spirits. in addition to protecting inari shrines, they are petitioned to intervene on behalf of the locals and particularly to aid against troublesome nogitsune, those spirit foxes who do not serve inari. jewels are a common symbol of inari, and inari's kitsune are often adorned with white round balls known as hoshi no tama (ほしのたま, literal translation: star balls). they are glowing with kitsunebi (an atmospheric ghost light). these balls acts as a container for kitsune's souls. when not in human form, akira carries this ball in her mouth or on her tails, but in human form, she wears this around her neck as an amulet. misfortune will fall upon anyone who tries to steal hoshi no tama from a kitsune.

when in human form, akira possesses magic manipulation. this includes being able to create, shape, and manipulate magic. this form of arcane power allows her to achieve supernatural effects and mystic powers through use of mystical practices. such practices include rituals, spells and potions. the older a kitsune gets and the more tails it possesses, the stronger their magical abilities become. ancient kitsune have known to be capable of harnessing and achieving transcendental levels of mystical abilities, allowing them to essentially change reality however they see fit.

in her human form, akira has an otherworldly beauty about her. sometimes she can become careless, or if she drinks, some parts of the illusion of her human transformation can drop; this is when one might see her fox-fire, or the glowing of her eyes. in her fox form, akira possesses three of her nine tails, and she is pure white.

Akademiya Days (Pre-teen to Late Teen): this verse will encompass Cyno's life as an Akademiya scholar, the Pact with Hermanubis events, joining the matra as well the onset of Cyno's career as the General Mahamatra and meeting Tighnari at the Akademiya.

From the Start (18-20): In this divergence, Cyno is involved with the in-game events as early as the Prologue, accompanying the Traveler on their journey.

Mahamatra No More (21+): As the Akademiya shifts for greater changes, the matra's department was disbanded. Stripped of his title, Cyno suddenly finds himself having to reinvent himself. How will he adjust to being a part of this society he's always kept at arms' length before?

Never a Matra (age can vary): In this divergence, the circumstances that lead Cyno to become a matra never happened. What kind of man would he have been then?

Looking for a new roleplay partner!

I’m 21 so I’m only comfortable with people who are 18+, I only write in third person, and I tend to enjoy the more detailed responses. Occasional grammatical errors and run on sentences are okay, so long as it’s not egregious or unreadable.

I also usually double up so both parties are able to get something out of the roleplay, but I do notice if only one thread is getting more attention than the other, so I’m mainly looking for balance there!

I would prefer if I could get a response a day, but I do understand that life can get busy so if you think you’ll be away for a few days I would just like to see a head’s up so I’m not waiting around for a response.

As for experience with writing, I’ve been at this for around eight years, but I don’t mind having a more inexperienced partner! If you’re interested in writing and trying your hand at it that’s all I care about. I roleplay on discord, and I don’t mind making a server!
