Today's marker practice #4

Today I worked on an Ayumu I've been refining for awhile. I think a huge bottleneck for my marker practise is taking the time to draw and line the art cleanly so I've begun creating a single lined design, and then tracing it onto other shikishi. Kind of accelerates the learning process. (So I've actually coloured this exact Ayumu like 3-4 times and each one is unique in its own way (mostly they have different mistakes 😂).

It's pretty tough working on watercolour paper with markers by the way. Everything bleeds... The markers bleed as well as the fineliner. So I had to be super careful with working on it. It's leagues better than working on cheap Daiso paper though. The ink would absorb instantly and I wouldn't be able to blend any of the colours.

I've also purchased Copic Marker Shikishi. Theoretically, these should be perfect for my needs, but they're pretty hard to get a hold of though for a reasonable price... I think I have to proxy them from Japan. For now, I'll be using these water colour shikishi.

The watercolor shikishi are also quite fragile. Overworking the paper/ using a regular eraser can damage it. I've started using a kneadable eraser which damages it a bit less. It makes my kneadable eraser fluffy instantly though, which probably cuts the lifespan of the eraser 😅

I've also purchased Copic white ink that's useful for patching up mistakes like things bleeding beyond edges. However the paper is actually off-white so if you look closely you'll be able to see the copic white ink.

But yeah, learning copics have been really fun! I haven't posted much recently and it's because I've just been iteratively working on my marker skills. 💪

#love live #ayumu uehara #my art #myon's marker training arc #i think the light grey i have is running out of ink #it was a bit of a struggle #markers are scary #how do i graduate to colour when b/w is so comfy... LMAO #i was writing a lengthy blog post that featured all of my experimental ugly wips with explanations but then tumblr did an oopsie and #none of it saved and like; man.....#but i'm pretty happy with my progress!! the really early experiments were super ugly LMAO #once i feel comfortable with b/w ill probably toy with colours but its a bit conceptually foreign to me #cus there's only like #select colours #so you have limited colours to pick from? and to blend with?#and i dont really know how to mix pigments #aand on top of that im not sure what are the best ways to mix mediums (like if i wanted to do a colour wash #i can use water colour right??? is there an order??)#(like water colour is obviously water but copics are alcohol based so like does it matter what order one goes on the other??? AHHHH PANIC)#i have many questions... and for whatever reason started rambling in the tags #i like ayumu 😊#(im have a lot of tutorials to watch)

Happy Birthday, Ayumu! 🥳🥳

While I was in in Tokyo earlier this year, I passed by a crafts store and found lots of pretty paper flowers. I thought they'd make really pretty shikishis... 😊

I've been drawing Nijigasaki for 4 years and this would be the 3rd Ayumu birthday I've drawn for... Wow! 😅😅

Ayumu's my favourite by far - so much that it's kind of hard to word why but I'd hope that adoration comes across in my art. There was originally a comic I was making for her, but I couldn't finish it in time. I hope I can make one in time next year!

#this shikishi was especially so fun to work on!#i experimented more with colour glows (eg. yellow blue green) and it really adds to it!#Also when gluing the flowers i realised i should pay a lot of attention to the angles so i can indicate a third dimension #(eg the falling petals as opposed to gluing flat)#it's cool!!!#i bought tons of stuff from stationary and craft stores when i was in japan #so im excitedf to use them!!!!#i hope i can make better and better shikishis...!#i feel like my skills are still very mediocre but the growth from the first ones is pretty dramatic #lets keep working hard!#love live #love live njiigasaki #ayumu uehara #copic markers #myon's markers training arc
