ok ok ok so according to the Tove Jansson biography I’m currently reading (Tove Jansson: arbeta och älska by Tuula Karjalainen in case anyone’s interested), the word “mymla” was sometimes used as a slang word for lesbian sex! and one of Tove’s moomin characters is called Mymlan (the Mymble in english)! coincidence? idk but it makes my gay little heart happy ❤

Some Moomin facts

- In her letters, Tove Jansson uses the word “mymla” (mymble) for having sex.

- In a letter to Eva Konikoff in 1950, Tove reveals that it was her uncle who invented the mumintrolls. She used to eat from his pantry during nights and he told her a mumintroll who lived behind the tiled stove would come and “huff her at the neck”. Their looks were inspired by a stump she once saw in the woods, covered in snow to make it look like it had a large white nose. 

- She wrote the first moomin story in 1944 as a way to escape her fright of bombs. “I crept into an incredibleworld (otrolighetsvärld) where everything was natural and friendly - and possible.”

- Tove's father Victor, a sculptor, was pro-German during the war and did not conceal his “aversion towards Jews.” In a letter from 1942, Tove writes: “This time it’s clear. ‘Faffan’ and I have told each other ‘I hate you’.” (Faffan = Victor).

The moomins in german

Here’s my contribution to @moomintrivia ‘s moomin in other languages!

(Fun fact I live in the city where the first german moomin adaption was filmed in and we have a museum partially about them :’) )

Also mostly the names in the german adaption are pretty lame tbh because it’s basically just how you’d write their name in german

First the names that I actually have something interesting to say to:

Sniff- Schnüferl: a personification basically for an old german word for to sniff

There are many translations for Snufkin:

Snufkin- Schnupferich: so idk why they chose this but the word Schnupf(en) means to have a running nose??? And the ending -rich is also to make it a name

Snufkin-Schnüffel: This one’s pretty funny because it can also mean to inhale something to get high (420 amirite)

Joxter- jojoks: I’m kinda disappointed that they did not take the literall translation of Joxter wich would be “Witzbold” (someone who likes to make jokes) jojoks basically means nothing it’s just a name.

Little my- kleine My or kleine Mü: both versions are pronounced as Mü (idk how to write it in english but basically it’s an mueh??? Umlaute(äöü) in german are pretty hard to pronounce as a non native speaker)

The Groke- Morra: from the word “murren” or “knurren” wich basically means to grumble or complain. Describes her character best I’d say.

Thingummy and bob- Tofslan und Vivslan: funfact: eventhough Tofslan is voiced by a male actor in the “Ausburger Puppenkiste” adaption, they left the obvious female names in german which I really love :,) gay rights.

The moomins- Die Muminfamilie (lit. The moomin family) just how you would write moomin in german. Nothing special. Funny thing is that the moomins often get compared to hippos or trolls in the german texts (as an example in one of the episodes of “die muminfamilie” Snufkin says something along the lines of “I did not want to wake you. You were sleeping like an hippo” )

Now the characters that just got their names pronounced/written in a german way:

Moomin- Mumin

Moominpapa/-mama - Muminvater/-Mutter

Snork/ Snorkmaiden - Snork/Snorkfräulein

Mymble’s daughter- Mymla: no real meaning but it sounds really beautiful and soft.

Hatifatteners-Hatifnatten: even as a german speaking person pretty hard to pronounce lmao. No actual meaning. They often get described as asparagus-looking things which I think is pretty funny

Hemulen- ein Hemul
