@RobotsPlayingGames 🤖💜🕹️ Imagine this: you put your favorite game in your Master System only to find out there are not any save files anymore... It happened to me before. 😣😢 It can happen to any retrogame you own. Most old cartridges use volatile ram memory paired with a small battery to enable saving and retaining of game files. Once the battery is dead so is all information saved in the cartridge! It is necessary to replace the battery to preserve our save files (that took days, weeks, months of gaming time). There are also ways to extract and copy data from cartridges and save to files preserving game saves and it's even possible to copy them back to the original cartridge. As a very experienced (old) retrogamer, it happened to me and I've searched and found some cool guides of how to avoid it. It can get tricky so here is a very informative and fun video by My Life in Gaming @mylifeingaming that shows how different save systems work, how to replace batteries (some soldering is needed), extract and save data etc! You can watch it here: https://youtu.be/_tVJYdZRAXg Have you ever lost save files on your retrogames? New video uploaded: https://youtu.be/lwKae9wsxSA This video is about preserving and restoring #Nintendo64 #N64 Memory Pak saves. @mylifeingaming did a great job with other types of preservation but did not mention this. Using a Raphnet Technology N64 to USB (V3) adapter, saves were preserved. https://www.instagram.com/p/B1iE7dbHswu/?igshid=kgsjwaa02tp

Nintendo 64 Ultra HDMI Mod Review Script
*This is meant to be a script for a video that I will be posting to youtube. I will include images in a separate post*
It was about 1 and a half years ago that I was introduced to the ultra hdmi mod. MyLifeInGaming did a video on n64 quality improvements and I was instantly interested. Through some searching I found that I could send my Nintendo 64 to a installer to have the mod put into my console. I decided to pay Mega of Baddassconsoles.com to work on mine since he seemed the most trustworthy. However, my big issue with the service was the cost. The mod board costs about 140 each, and Mega charges 40 for the installation and the shipping is on you. Finally, in January 2017, I ordered the service and received my console about a month later after shipping. Now I’m sure the questions on your mind are; “Is it worth it the price?” & “Does it actually improve the picture quality?”
Created by Marshall of Retroactive.be, the ultra hdmi mod is a simple way to play your favorite childhood N64 games on your HD TV. If you plug in your N64’s composite cables, the picture often looks muddy and gross. The ultra hdmi is able to improve the picture quality to 1080p and 720p. The software is also able to add scanlines, but I can’t easily show that over a recording. It offers a variety of filters, but like the scan lines, they are something you’re better off messing with until you find the exact settings you like. What you’re seeing is what I feel looks the best on my TV. Your milage may vary on your TV set.
Now whether or not it improves the picture quality is up to your own opinion. You have to remember, that at the end of the day, the normal resolution of these games is usually only 240i. The ultra hdmi only improves the resolution to comfortably fit an HD screen. This mod is likely only going to appease to enthusiasts like myself. And if you’re only in this for the super popular n64 games like Mario, zelda, and other main series Nintendo games, you should look elsewhere. You can play versions of those games on the Wii and Wii U virtual consoles in 480p. They look far better in those ports. The ultra hdmi is for us weirdos that like using original cartridges on our old consoles with the awful 3 hand-requiring controllers.
I took a look at several popular games for examples. Among those I tested; Goldeneye 007, Super Mario 64, Mischief makers, Pokemon Stadium 0, 1, & 2, Pokemon Snap, and Pokemon Puzzle league all look fantastic. I hated how Ocarina of time looks, it’s super blurry and distorted. But whatever, the 3ds version is superior in most ways. I was honestly surprised by Goldeneye 007. It was actually super clear and clean. I immediately started getting into the game again once I got over the archaic shooting controls. One thing that the ultra hdmi shines at is 2d images, and it really shows with Pokemon Puzzle League and Mischief Makers. The 2d sprites and images are extremely clear and the color really pops.
I mentioned that most n64 games run at about a 240i resolution. Well the n64 can be upgraded to support 4mb of ram from Nintendo’s Ram expansion pak. This gave a variety of games an increase in texture quality, resolution, and framerate improvements. I don’t own many of the games that took advantage of the pack, but I do have pokemon Stadium 2. When the expansion pak is inserted, stadium 2 gains an improved resolution of 480i. Naturally, this translates quite well to the ultra hdmi. Again, I would suggest tinkering with the UI settings until you find exactly what you think works best on your TV.
So? What do I personally think of the ultra hdmi? I love it! It’s an excellent tool for me to use for when I record n64 games for my videos and projects. The super clear picture quality makes it really easy for me to record from my N64. In the past I had to use my old DazzleDVC100 or crummy upscalers. I’d also like to mention, as a footnote, that I don’t suggest using an upscaler on anything under 240i. Many upscalers are known to create a jittering effect on the whole screen as you can see here.
Would I recommend it to anyone other than die hard hobbyists? Probably not. The n64 has an extremely small library of about 300 games. And most of the popular ones, like I mentioned, are available on the Wii and Wii U’s virtual console. Hell, I’m sure Nintendo’s switch will be getting a VC at some point. The service as a whole costs about $200, and that isn’t including the console, controllers, games, etc. Hell, I shelled out more money just to get a special  pikachu edition console just to feed my vanity. I spent about about $300 on this thing. The average joe would get more pleasure out of the Wii U ports or an emulator. If a casual n64 fan wanted to experience some childhood nostalgia, they probably would get just as much fun out of the terrible looking 240i picture on their HD TV. You know, assuming their TV still has composite input ports.
Thanks so much to Marshall of Retroactive.be and Mega of Badassconsoles.com for creating and installing my ultra hdmi. I am extremely happy with their work and how well they handled my dirty pikachu n64. Mega often likes to stream his modding work and his personal projects on twitch. I suggest going by, he is doing great work on his gamecube projects and he is always throwing some banter around while engaging in meaningful conversations with his viewers. If you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to leave me a comment down below. I would love to answer any missed questions and receive feedback on my review. Thanks for watching.
