also yes i get it’s a cultural thing (kind of? i also see this a lot in american and italian shows so maybe let’s just say conservative thinking is everywhere) but when i see a show that tries to force me to pity and empathize with characters who lead miserable lives because of choices made under peer pressure/societal expectations, i get annoyed as all hell, especially when they have a whole social circle supporting them whatever choices they make. i live in italy lol not the most enlightened country. i think a good 75% of my life choices haven’t been made with peer pressure/societal expectations in mind, i’m fully grown and adult now. i still haven’t been dragged through the streets and publicly put to shame, even tho i did some things that were considered very shitty under the traditional moral compass, so i can confidently say caring about what society expects from you is kind of bullshit (and often you don’t even really know, you just assume, so you’ll get it wrong and suffer for the wrong reasons too). so no i won’t pity a person who isn’t able to say “no mother in law i won’t get pregnant again”. i promise you CAN not drink a getting-pregnant-with-a-boy disgusting concoction with virtually no repercussions. i promise you CAN stay single for a few years past 25 without the police banging on your door and dragging you to jail. i promise it’s gonna be alright. i mean we’re not talking about being queer or whistleblowing or shit like that, we’re talking about very basic things you can refuse to do. “ohhhh but then the mother in law won’t speak to them again” oh well i think zhizhi can manage. “ohhhh but then what will the neighbors think about a man living alone in his thirties” listen my guy if your worst fear in life is what the neighbors are gonna say about your love life you gotta do some soul searching
