weekly dump
decided to work on my rewrite this week, there are some points I wanted to make better and just overall put my new knowledge to the test. on tuesday we had a national holiday so my friend and I decided to go to a coffee shop to work on some stuff. the rest of the week was just prep work for classes on august, like refreshing my business lectures from back in the day when I was doing my IB. Finally I updated my resume for job searching with the new majors and some new formatting

Weekly thoughts- Ep 178
ooughghhg i thought i'd have more thoughts for this one but my head is just empty. i think mostly just because i'm overwhelmed with work. maybe i'll reblog and add more to this one as thoughts come to me.
i will say i'm a little sad about the lack of engagement with this one? i thought jericlaude nation would really like this one but they did not come out for this week, given it's the least comments an episode's gotten in... a long time. idk if this week's a holiday or what. though the sad truth is the episode ended w/ nia and majority probably just went "alright i'mma head out." poor nia, like, i think most people dont dislike her anymore, but any time the story is focused on her, people just stop caring. which is a shame, because she's up there on my favs. but i get it, i don't usually care about the side characters in a story as much either and usually check out when my fav manga are focused on them.
anyway, as for the actual ep, i thought this was kind of a nice moment with jericho and claude which is why it's a bummer...nobody cared about it this week ig lol. ik there's still some debate about jericho really caring about claude and honestly i'm just...giving up on anyone who doesn't get it by now haha. jericho literally CAN'T spell it out, which is kind of his entire conflict with his scion, and some people just really need things spelled out. but i'm glad the jericlaude enjoyers who did tune in this week followed and enjoyed their soft moment before it went sour. also therapy dog claude.
anyway, sorry this one's sort of negative. it's a rough week for work- there's only 2 days left in the month and i'm not even done with this month's episodes, let alone patreon rewards, despite working 10+ hours nearly every day this month and i'm just tired and burned out and the only validation i get for it are these episodes that people are caring about less every week. i wanna put this comic on an indefinite hiatus on weeks like this but ya know paycheck. plus if i even take 1 week of even less people will read it just making everything worse.

𝓗𝓐𝓛𝓛𝓞𝓦𝓔𝓔𝓝 — arguably one of the most haunting festive celebrations in modern history. A holiday occassion of yet-unclear origins, it has its possible roots in old Harvest Celebrations of pre-Christian communities across European territories.
Today, our focus is Halloween as it was celebrated in the Victorian era and the larger scope of the 19th century Europe and America.
Tumblr media
It is common to root modern Halloween to pre-Christian harvest festivals, celebrated by most if not all European peoples, though the ones most influential on the history of Victorian Halloween would be the Celts and other ancient communities of the British Isles. After the expanding Christian church repurposed old harvest celebrations into the widely spread Christian calendar, those became associated with various saints and celebrated as All Hallows' Eve, or All Saints' Eve.
Tumblr media
Victorian Halloween in Europe retained a feeling of nostalgia for the old days. For example, in the year 1851, Coleraine Chronicle, a Northern Irish newspaper, published a series of Halloween poems. Orkney Herald and Weekly Advertiser, in the year 1863, published a peculiar article about the "old Halloween" that directly identified the holiday with the feeling of excitement and joy:
Halloween! In the days of my boyhood there was magic in the name. Long before the day arrived we hoarded up all the apples, turnips, and cabbage-stocks we could either steal or beg. It was impossible to sleep on the night preceding the auspicious eve…There was excitement on every face – mischief brewing in every heart.
Tumblr media
While the middle of the 19th century saw the most of the public's attention being directed towards Halloween, it saw its decline towards the end of the Victorian period — a phenomenon seemingly regarded as disappointing by the contemporary writers.
Tumblr media
As for the origins of Halloween, the publications of the 19th century seem to root it in the old traditions of pre-Christian Europe. A publication in London Evening Standard in 1878 attested a connection of Halloween with Athenian Anthesteria meanwhile an article in Newcastle Courant, year 1877, claimed that the holiday's origin is lost in the "mists of antiquity".
In The Book of Hallowe'en by Ruth Edna Kelley, published in 1919, the author connects the celebration of Samhain, attested to Old Irish customs. This book presents a viewpoint that connects Halloween to ancient celebrations of harvest and otherwise cyclic holidays across different nations. The author comments on various festival occasions focused around fire as a dispeller of bad omens, though to be connected with Haloween.
Tumblr media
Introduction of Christianity to European lands did not quite exorcize Halloween as a celebration, having, instead, connected it to less pagan customs. Now, Halloween became associated with "matchmaking" and offered and opportunity for unmarried women to glimpse into their future using nuts, kale, apples, and other fruits of harvest. Newry Telegraph in 1892 published an article about a peculiar tradition of forecasting relationships: a girl would stick apple kernels to her cheeks, attaching a name to each; whichever fell first proclaimed infidelity of the one whose name it bore. In 1877, the same publication offered a more eerie tradition, claiming that eating an apple before looking in the mirror on All Hallows' Eve would let a young maiden see the face of her future husband.
Both Orkney Herald and Newcastle Courant equally point out a tradition of "ducking for apples" — a custom that, perhaps, lasted through centuries and became what we currently know as apple bobbing.
Tumblr media
In American press, the word "Halloween" first appeared in April 1836, having been mentioned in the publication of The Lady's Book, also known as Godey's Magazine. This magazine was largely targeted towards women and published colorful fashion drawings and stories. The first one to mention Halloween in the United States was titled Clara Lawson; or the Rustic Toilet. Within this story, Halloween is said to be a "time of festivity, of fun and frolick, of cake-making and nut-cracking" though the author seems rather disappointed by the holiday's current state, lamenting the more festive air of the 1800s.
Tumblr media
Various publications in American press afterwards depicted common Halloween superstitions such as one stating that a person could see a face of their future betrothed in the mirror at exactly midnight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After its introduction to America, Halloween became commercialized rather fast. In 1897, The Dennison Manufacturing Company was founded. It offered various good used for decoration during the Halloween festivities and released its own catalogue with ideas for decor and gifts. Following alongside, various fashion magazines began publishing their own catalogues of dresses and costumes, majorly for women.
Tumblr media
Publications around 1860s-1870s focused on the eerie air of Halloween, offering the readers to read Halloween poems (The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, October, 1865) or visit a ghostly home. Paintings depicting various witches, ghosts, and entities became rather common to see on the pages of magazines.
Tumblr media
As stated by the book How to Amuse Yourself and Others: The American Girl's Handy Book by Lina Beard, released in 1895, it was apparently common for people of the 19th century to believe that Halloween was the best time to partake in magic. Though the writer denies any genuine power of said magical tricks, it is still implied that Halloween parties and games were quite frequent to encounter during the holiday, such as:
🕯 Melted Lead where one would pour melted metal through a handle of the key and into a pan of cold water, then deciphering its shapes to define the occupation of one's future husband.
Tumblr media
🕯 Nutshell Boats that were used to decipher one's future by sending walnut shells filled with wax floating over a tub of water with tapers inserted into the middle and lit. It was believed that the owner of the shell that survives such a voyage unsunken would lead a happy life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
🕯 Roasting Nuts would predispose one's friendship: by burning two nuts, each to represent one person, one could predict if the connection was to be merry or unfortunate depending on how calmly the nuts burned.
Tumblr media
🕯 The Magic Mirror was a common mirror that gained mysterious power during All Hallows' Eve. Holding it in the way that reflected the moon would help the person — usually a young girl — predict how many happy occassions avaited them before the next Halloween.
Tumblr media
🕯 The Ghostly Fire would be one of the most peculiar ways to partake in 19th century Halloween. It was prepared by putting salt and alcohol, alongside a few raisins, in a dish, before it was set on fire. Then, the gathered crowd would do a circle dance around the table as the fire — described as greenish purple — burned. And right before it went out, everyone would snatch a hot raisin from the flames.
Tumblr media
Alongside many other near-ritualistic occasions that this book entertains its reader with, those mentioned created a merry, festive, and rather mysterious air typical of the 19th century Halloween. In her Games for Hallow-e'en, published in 1897, Mary E. Blain adds on that rooms meant for Halloween games and celebrations are to be richly decorated with "apples, cucumbers, squash, pumpkins and such" that would be hollowed out and cut faces into. She recommends skull imagery, black cats, witches' hats, and various little decorations for the rooms — which are, of course, to be kept dark.
Tumblr media
Halloween parties, both in Europe and America, would also become an occasion for costume showcases; it would only be a matter of time until Halloween costumes became a commonly beloved phenomenon. Often, people would dress up in exquisite gowns or themed outfits, such as witches or various creatures of the night.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Ireland and Scotland, the tradition of dressing up for Halloween, known as guising, would be popular around the middle of the 19th century and into the Victorian era. In Scotland, the masks used for Halloween would be referred to as "false faces". The tradition of souling, asking for treats while going house to house, would be brought to the United States in the late 1930s with newly arriving Irish immigrants. Frank Leslie's Popular Monthly, Volume 40, published in 1895, refers to the custom of people, "disguised", going door to door with lanters made of carved out turnips and being rewarded with cakes and sweets. Unsurprisingly enough, "guising" often involved visiting wealthy homes, and the tradition grew all the more popular in 1920s and 1930s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though not particularly related to the 19th century, Halloween postcards are also a product of the craze that was the celebration of Halloween both in America and in the British lands. Largely popularized in the so-called "golden era" circa 1905-1915, these postcards present iconography very familiar to a modern person: witches, brooms, black cats, jack-o'-lanterns. The "magical" rituals described prior sometimes find their way into these visual depictions of the holiday, creating a symbolic tie with the past traditions: some postcards depict scrying, candle rituals, and various visuals of divination.

financial assistance needed
hi. i work 40 hrs per week at a warehouse, as a contractor through a recruitment agency. last week was Memorial Day and was a national holiday (a required day off), meaning i only worked 30 hours, expecting to receive holiday pay.
leading up to the holiday, i attempted multiple times to contact them asking about how holiday pay worked. i also looked on their website and found verbage saying employees working through them get paid holidays. they refused to respond in any way at all and have ignored me for 2 weeks now. (I'm thinking by 'employees' they meant their recruiters, not people like me on the lowest rung.)
and of course it's convenient that I'm missing a quarter of my weekly paycheck, worth nearly $200, which has caused me to go $-40 in the red. so not only was the information obscured, they are actively avoiding telling me that i don't qualify for holiday pay.
i even would have been able to take on more
today is Friday and i won't get another check from them until Wednesday at the earliest. i am in a vulnerable position and do not have family i can ask for help.
if you can donate, my info is below. any amount helps. if you can't, please share if you're able to. thanks

Listen, This is my crazy time. I always fall off the radar a little bit when I get hit with the family Christmas tsunami of joy. I have dinners, parades, light tours, train rides, pj pictures, tree decorating, cocktail parties, and a few December birthdays sprinkled in there as well. I’m bursting with fucking holiday jolliness. So, please don’t be alarmed when I didn’t rush home to work on Maier’s 5th BDOTW.  It’s quite a feat, and it will end up winning him a hundred bucks, but the dude was talking shit about our matchup this week, saying shit like “I finally slayed all you sluts.” man, fuck that guy, he’s going to get what is coming to him. He has the curse of the #1 seed, and his fall will be great. Remember, the empty drum bangs the loudest.  But this week’s write up is not about him it’s about the other him, you know who I’m talking about. Do you think he realizes that he’s left 90 free dollars on the table? 90 bucks for just reading high quality LOG write ups. Do you think I received a stinky pinky, new england clam chowder or a big bubba log thigh? I didn’t. And now this mother fucker who started a guy who was almost dead for three straight weeks is sitting in a prime position to sneak into the playoffs.  Now I know I am the asshole here. It’s not like we all have jobs and families and friends and cars and shit going on. This guy is working at a restaurant that, according to their own website, is open to the public 16 hours a week! That’s like 2 and half hours a day.  I compared that to one of my former employers, Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, and they are open 12 hours a day for a whopping 84 hours a week. So I get it, he’s swamped! Maybe he is reading these things, maybe he’s waiting for the pot to get juicier? I guess this will settle it once and for all. If Matthew John Peterson can take his dick out of his hand and text me the password “dongle drip” he will automatically earn 100 bucks to his venmo account.
Kick back with a microdose boys, a heavy microdose.

LOG CHANGES FOR 2025
We are going back to our roots for draft day. We are going old school. Clip boards, paper and pens at the draft. No more phones or tablets to assist in the draft. Now I know the value in these modern gadgets. But I don’t want to see guys annoyed or upset that their gadget might get ruined by a pool dunk or a champagne squirt. I don’t want to see “Roman” avoiding the sticker board because he is catching up or having trouble with his app.  We put them away, we do paper and pen, we try to pay attention, it’s a shit show, if we find a violation, we will penalize accordingly, loss of keeper, loss of FAB or something. Clipboard, trunks and a positive attitude is all you need to bring to draft day moving forward!
Loser of the league will sing the national anthem to kick off the following draft. (after the maier/hames bet is final)
The LOG is moving to the SLEEPER app in 2025
Draft weekend is now 2 weekends before Labor Day. Not the weekend before labor day, but the one before that.
The throbber and stinky dick will be retired. There will be some other rule tweaks that affect scoring and those will be retired
The LOG championship belt will also be retired after year 10. LOG 2.0 will have a new belt and the old will be present for photos at draft weekends (not for losers).

merry Christmas everyone
In my house no Christmas is complete without Christmas songs like the Jackson’s five version of “Santa claus is coming to town “ , the temptation version of “silent night “ and this classic tune
"This Christmas" is a song by American soul musician Donny Hathaway released in 1970 by Atco Records. The song gained renewed popularity when it was included in 1991 on Atco Records' revised edition of their 1968 Soul Christmascompilation album and has since become a modern Christmas standard, with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers reporting that it was the 30th most-performed holiday song of all time.
Phil Upchurch said the song was "absolutely the premiere holiday song written by an African American". It was written by Hathaway and Nadine McKinnor.
"This Christmas" was recorded at Audio Finishers Studio on Ontario Street, Chicago in the fall of 1970. Ric Powell (see credits below) said that Hathaway was "very upbeat during the session" and that he "knew what he wanted to do musically and the impact he wanted to make with this song" regarding the representation of African Americans in Christmas music. On writing the song with Hathaway (who died in 1979), Nadine McKinnor said she felt "blessed to have written Donny a song that celebrates the possibilities, the expectations, and the anticipation of Christmas and the good fun and happy loving times", and that the creation of the song "was a God plan. God was in this plan. And Donny Hathaway was a genius."
"This Christmas" was released as a single in 1970. It initially saw little success, as it was listed just once on any of Billboard magazine's weekly published music charts in the 1970s, specifically Billboard's special Christmas Singles chart (on the week ending December 23, 1972, at position No. 11). But in recent years, the song has made it onto a number of Billboard's weekly music charts.
In addition to making its first appearance on the main Billboard Hot 100 songs chart in late December 2020 (peaking at No. 34 three years later), Hathaway's "This Christmas" has also appeared on these other Billboard music charts:
Global 200 (No. 52 peak position in early January 2024),
Global 200 Excl. US (No. 140 peak position in January 2024),
Holiday 100 (No. 25 peak position in early January 2014),
Holiday Digital Song Sales (No. 32 peak position in early January 2022),
Holiday Streaming Songs (No. 27 peak position in December 2020),
R&B Digital Song Sales (No. 5 peak position in late December 2023),
R&B Streaming Songs (No. 6 peak position in early January 2021),
R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales (No. 12 peak position in late December 2023),
R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs (No. 6 peak position in early January 2021),
and Streaming Songs (No. 27 peak position in early January 2021).
In 1991, Atco Records released a revised edition of their 1968 compilation album Soul Christmas that included "This Christmas".
After the 1991 release of Atco Records' Soul Christmas, the song became particularly notable for the popularity of its numerous covers by other artists, particularly well-known pop, smooth jazz and R&B artists.
Prior to this re-release, artists who recorded cover versions included The Whispers, The Temptations, Gladys Knight & the Pips, as well as Patti LaBelle, who titled a Christmas albumafter the song.
A previously unheard recording of the song by Diana Ross from 1974 was released on Motown Records' compilation album Christmas in the City in 1993.
In 1996, Patti LaBelle performed the song at the lighting of the American National Christmas Tree. During the performance her backing singers failed to appear, yet a frustrated LaBelle carried on without her entourage before President Clinton appeared to light the tree.
Gloria Estefan recorded a version for her fourth studio album Christmas Through Your Eyes in 1993.
Christina Aguilera recorded a cover of the song for her third studio album My Kind of Christmas (2000). It was released as a promotional single in November 2023.
The song was later certified gold by IFPI Danmarkfor selling over 45,000 units.
In 2001, Destiny's Child released a cover of the song for their studio album, 8 Days of Christmas.
Elliott Yamin released his version as his debut single in December 2006, which reached No. 21 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart.
A cover of the song by Chris Brown, recorded for the 2007 film of the same name, peaked at No. 62 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and was certified Platinum by the RIAA.
Lady Antebellum covered the song for the 2012 Christmas album On This Winter's Night. In December 2012,
The Philadelphia Tribunemusic critic Nekesa Mumbi Moody praised Lady Antebellum's recording and the rest of the album. However, Ludovic Hunter-Tilney of the Financial Times panned the album and called the trio's cover recording a "slickly insincere 1980s soul."
CeeLo Green covered the song for Cee Lo's Magic Moment (2012). Also in December 2012, Alan Sculley of Asbury Park Press praised CeeLo Green's recording as "a good Stevie Wonder". One of The StarPhoenix music critics called CeeLo's takes on the song and "What Christmas Means to Me" not as good as original versions but "worth a listen" with "enough originality".
However, Melissa Ruggieri of The Atlanta Journal-Constitutioncriticised CeeLo's version as skippable and "surprisingly dull". Covers by Seal and by American band Train each went to No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart in 2015 and 2016, respectively.
In December 2016, Mark Daniell of the Ottawa Sun praised versions by the following artists as "good": Lady Antebellum, Chris Brown, Macy Gray, and CeeLo Green.
Sabrina Carpenter performed a cover of this song with Tyla for her 2024 Netflix Christmas special, A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter.

GJ and ZZH Updates — January 14-20
previous week || all posts || following week
This is part of a weekly series collecting updates from and relating to Gong Jun and Zhang Zhehan.
This post is not wholly comprehensive and is intended as an overview, links provided lead to further details. Dates are in accordance with China Standard Time, the organization is chronological. My own biases on some things are reflected here. Anything I include that is not concretely known is indicated as such, and you’re welcome to do your own research and draw your own conclusions as you see fit. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, concerns, or additions. :)
[Glossary of names and terms] [Masterlist of my posts about the situation with Zhang Zhehan]
01-14 → Possible hexagon ring sighting.
01-15 → Net-A-Porter posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun.
→ 361° posted a commercial featuring Gong Jun. (1129 kadian, 51129 with the date.)
→ GXG posted six photos ads featuring Gong Jun.
→ Gong Jun's studio posted a behind the scenes video of the GXG photoshoot. Caption: "Freeze and relax, feel the leisurely spring in advance. @ Gong Jun Simon enjoys every moment of the rhythm~"
→ Elle magazine posted a teaser of their photoshoot with Gong Jun that would be released the following day. Caption: "The New Year brings the 'dragon', and the new year brings the 'beauty'. The cover of the new issue is about to be revealed."
01-16 → Elle posted their photoshoot of Gong Jun. Caption: "The shooting location is in a building decorated in artistic style. The porch has been decorated early with the festive atmosphere of the New Year. The lawn in front of the door is still green and full of the vitality that is rare in winter. At 6 o'clock in the evening the night before, @ Gong Jun Simon was still working on set. After finishing work, he rushed to Shanghai. After getting up early, he had to rush to attend a New Year's Eve party after filming. He won’t have a holiday tomorrow for New Year’s Day, but will go back to the set and continue filming. Looking back further, last year at this time he was also preparing for a New Year's Eve performance and joined the group the next day. 'It's good not to have a holiday,' he said. There was a sense of urgency in his words, as well as a sense of eagerness to try. 'I just hope that every project will be filmed smoothly and new projects will start filming as soon as possible.' Why is he so serious about pursuing a career. 'I have to do it well this year and try to use my time as much as possible.'"
→ Gong Jun posted six photos from the Elle shoot. Caption: "In the first year of the new era, let's have fun together." He also posted nine to his Xiao Hong Shu, caption: "Send 30 million red packets 🧧🧧🧧 Be healthy, be happy, be rich" and nine to his Instagram, caption: "Spring festival is coming!!! 🏮🧧🐲!"
Tumblr media
→ Elle posted a video of their photoshoot featuring Gong Jun. Caption: "This year @ Gong Jun Simon has launched a 'World Favourites' section, where he publishes travel p-logs from time to time. On the one hand, he wants to record the scenery he has seen, the food he has eaten, and the interesting things he has seen. On the other hand, he wants to share what he has seen and heard with everyone, so that they can see the world he has seen through his records. In these travel p-logs, the photos and layout are all his own ideas. Gong Jun is a person with a strong desire to share. He hopes to pass on the happiness in life to others so that everyone can feel this happiness together. Of course, this is also a process in which he magnifies the happiness he feels."
→ Gong Jun's studio posted a behind the scenes video of the Elle shoot. Caption: "Have a far-reaching inner rhyme and bring auspiciousness to the East. @ Gong Jun Simon is enjoying the fun of the New Year."
→ Gong Jun's studio posted fifteen photos from the Elle shoot. Caption: "The fiery national colours outline the oriental charm, and @ Gong Jun Simon writes the warmth of the New Year."
→ Gong Jun's studio posted a douyin of footage from the Elle photoshoot. Caption: "Gong Jun inherits the past and traces the present, and absorbs the meaning of Chinese style. @ Gong Jun Simon interprets the modern style of the New Year with a pioneering attitude."
→ PRSR posted a promotional video spoken by Gong Jun.
01-17 → Gong Jun posted a promotional video he did for Deeyeo.
→ Kinokuniya Tokyo responded to whalers' injuries about stocking the Zhang Sanjian photobook, saying that they have been unable to contact the suppliers. They later posted an update that they have no plans to pursue this further.
→ PRSR posted a video (flashing lights cw) of their photoshoot with Gong Jun.
→ Fresh posted a photo ad announcing that Gong Jun would be appearing in a livestream the following day.
01-18 (Candy shower!!! 🍬) → Gong Jun posted a screenshot of the song 南京恋爱通告 (Nanjing Love Announcement) by Galaxy Express to his Instagram. Caption: "Good morning!" Fan Observations: - For the significance of Nanjing, see [here]. - This is only the second time that Gong Jun has posted a song to his Instagram since 813, and the first time that he has done so with it being the only thing in the post. Prior to 813, he posted songs quite often. - The song lyrics include the line "Sunrise on top of the purple-gold mountain," reminiscent of the golden mountain photos Gong Jun posted on 2022-12-17 which many people believe showed Zhang Zhehan from behind.
→ Gong Jun appeared on a livestream for Fresh, hosted in Nanjing. [full recording] Fan Observations: - He wore a jacket with a gold hexagon pattern. - One activity involved drawing images associated with words. For Nanjing, he drew a heart. 🥺 - He mentioned the song he had posted earlier, saying that he had found it a while ago and had been wanting to share it.
→ Gong Jun's studio posted eight photos from the Fresh livestream. Caption: "The carved jade dragon glows with vitality, and the veil and gold layer create the beauty of the new year. @ Gong Jun Simon feels pure in the momentum of soaring. I wish everyone a happy Laba Festival and prosperity with the dragon in 2024!"
Tumblr media
→ Gong Jun posted four selfies. Caption: "Today is Laba, so it's time to post selfies!" Fan Observation: The hoodie and pose that he's doing in them is very reminiscent of photos he posted on 10-31-2022, the anniversary of the One Night in Nanjing, which are in turn reminiscent of selfies Zhang Zhehan had once posted. [comparison]
→ PRSR posted a commercial featuring Gong Jun. The later also posted a photo ad.

→ Yang Yang posted two photos of himself and Gong Jun from the livestream.

01-20 → The Instagram posted a video of "Zhang Zhehan".

Note
I ALSO dont rlly like sss but u asking ppl not to play it is so funny T.T just bc its rlly not that fun? like i wouldnt exactly recommend it, but ur point of the devs not having much time to finish things is pure speculation. they have to develop things weeks/months in advance. theyre just shitty devs.
It's not just speculation. I have not personally worked for Gamefam, but me saying that the devs are getting crunched was based largely on the fact that Sonic Speed Simulator makes a point of advertising their weekly updates
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously, they don't make an entire update worth of content in a single week, but they still have to move things along pretty quickly in order to have something ready to release every week.
Also important to note is that ex-Gamefam employees have made many allegations against the company, stating that there was a terrible crunch to push out content, that they were underpaid, that Gamefam threatened to take action against employees who discussed their wages — which is illegal by the way —and that they were terminated with little to no warning, including many who were allegedly laid off before the holidays. Details are below the cut.
An article from The Gamer included statements made by former employees. One employee claimed to have received an email informing them they had been fired three days after the date the email said they were fired on
"According to a screenshot of the apparent termination email, they were told on October 31 that they were fired on October 28"
Another specifically mentioned the crunch
"'While I was employed under Gamefam it was a constant struggle due to heavy crunching in the development team,' they continue. 'We were mandated to update Sonic Speed Simulator every week. this was a heavy toll on my mental and physical self [sic].'"
Additionally
"Multiplesources [sic] put the lowest average Roblox salaries between $32,000 and $35,000"
Gamefam denied the allegations, which then led to more former employees speaking out about the poor work environment.
One employee, Joshua DeBoer, reported facing trouble after discussing wages with other employees. From a Games Industry article
"DeBoer claims that as he presented the salary concerns to CEO Joe Ferencz, the executive said, 'Do you think it's good to go among your colleagues and spread dissatisfaction? You need to be seen as a leader if you want to stay here long.'"
Bloxy News further elaborated
"DeBoer was then suspended for a week [...] According to a Tweet put out by DeBoer, Gamefam forced him to reveal by name who he was discussing wages with, and also threatened to fire him if he continued to do so. Gamefam also failed to pay DeBoer’s final paycheck with the company on time, and refused to let him exercise stock options after repeated attempts."
DeBoer took this to the National Labor Relations Board, resulting in Gamefam settling by giving him a $5,000 bonus, and sending a notice to all employees, shared by Polygon
“WE WILL NOT tell you that it is toxic or poisonous to the company if you talk to coworkers about pay,”
Maybe it's just me, but that feels like a very passive aggressive way to phrase that.
It's possible that the devs aren't very good, but even if that's the case, there's a lot indicating a toxic work environment built around crunch culture. It's true that my previous post about SSS included some of my speculations about why exactly the game has the issues it has, such as positing that many elements of the game are poorly set up in order to encourage microtransactions, but the idea of the devs being rushed is not purely based on my own assumptions.
I will admit to being a biased party, due to disliking the game but playing multiple hours a week to get reference pictures of the week's content before it's gone, but I have tried to keep this post mostly limited to known facts, or statements by people who have actually worked on Speed Sim.
People are welcome to play the game if they so desire. The main reason I add disclaimers is because, while it's ultimately their decision what games they play, I don't want to be the one encouraging people to play it.
Hopefully this helped clear things up. You can look at any of the linked articles for more information. You can also direct more questions to me, but as far as the allegations go, my knowledge is limited to what I found reading through those articles. This is definitely a longer response than you were looking for, but I wanted to give a proper explanation

Last Book Abandoned: Do I ever truly abandon any book I haven’t finished yet? I fully expect to finish all of them some day. But the most recent book that has been sitting on my nightstand unread for weeks is, “The 21 Lessons of Merlyn: A Study in Druid Magic & Lore”
Currently Reading: Umm… “The 21 Lessons of Merlyn: A Study in Druid Magic & Lore”?
Books/Shows/Movies you want to get around to: Books - Oh, I have several on my to-read pile for 2024. Partciularly a few gay romance novels. I also want to re-read all of Francesca Lia Block's Weeztie Bat books. But I promised @teenakp I would read Terry Pratchett’s “Nation” next. Shows - I am eager to watch Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij’s “A Murder at the End of the World”. Movies - I am planning to rewatch all of the original Sean Connery James Bond movies. Followed by all the Indiana Jones movies. Or maybe it's the other way around.
Last Thing Researched: I looked up the lyrics to Eartha Kitt’s “Under the Bridges of Paris”. Does that count?
Last Thing Learned: Ummm… that “Under the Bridges of Paris” is totally about having sexy times under the bridges of Paris, just as I expected it to be. (It was the B-Side to Eartha Kitt's “Santa Baby” 45 RPM vinyl.)
Favorite Online Fandom Memory: Umm… Neil Gaiman reblogging one of my posts? Leslie Jordan congratulating me on publishing my first book?
Favorite Old Fandom You Wish Would Have A Resurgence: I expect I’ll probably rewatch “The OA” after watching Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij’s “A Murder at the End of the World”. It's been awhile since I rewatched it. I wonder what it will be like this time.
Favorite Thing You Enjoy That Never Had an Active or Big "Fandom" But You Wish It Did: Heck, I am surprised that “For All Mankind” even has a small fandom at all. Most things I like aren't very popular. But two shows that come to my mind. Back in 2020 Alex Garland had a great sci-fi show on Hulu called “Devs”. It deserved a bigger following when it aired. And more recently, there was a great French/Japanese show on Apple TV based on a manga about wine tasting called “Drops of God”. I wish it had a bigger following… I wanted people to talk to about it when the new episodes were airing weekly.
Tempting Project You Don't Have Time For: I know I have a follow-up to my book “Rewrite the Stars” inside of me. Like a do-over. I put so much of myself into that one and it never caught on. I had higher hopes for it. As an artist I try to push on the accepted norms of our medium — new ways of thinking, seeing, experiencing. But society doesn’t know how to approach things it doesn’t understand. Constantly feeling misunderstood isn’t very motivating. Why put so much time and effort into something that no one will read? The follow-up lives in my mind, and right now that is good enough for me. Who has time to write another book? I'd rather sleep and dream.
Tempting Project I've Given In to: Out with the old, and in with the new. I have been going through the house and garage getting rid of things I haven't used or doesn't resonate with me anymore. For example, I donated seven boxes of books to the Friends of the Library. But there is still a lot in this house I need to sort though. My current project is the garage. Next will be the closet.
Tagging: @persepinesascent and @teenakp if you are in the mood for it.

ProTip: Get your free yearly COVID and flu vaccinations before heading to holiday gatherings where you may run into unvaccinated MAGA relatives.
Welcome to sick season. According to the CDC, New York City, along with New Jersey and at least 16 other states are now experiencing “high” to “very high” levels of respiratory illness activity, as measured by the number of weekly visits to healthcare providers and emergency rooms by people experiencing symptoms of fever, cough, and sore throat . The culprits are the usual suspects: this year’s strains of influenza, COVID, and RSV. And though flu-like illness levels have been above baseline nationally for several consecutive weeks, the CDC warns that we still haven’t hit the peak. [ ... ] The CDC also sent out an alert to healthcare providers this week highlighting low vaccination rates for the three viruses.
I never stopped wearing a mask on crowded public transit. An increasing number of commuters are resuming the practice.
Beyond vaccination, for everyone, the best way to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses like the flu and RSV is regular handwashing; avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth; and staying home if you get sick. High filtration face masks still work great, too, and not just for avoiding COVID.
Most of the time if a place offers COVID vaccines it also has flu vaccines. But just to be safe...
Vaccines.gov - Search for COVID‑19 vaccine locations
Vaccines.gov - Search for flu vaccine locations
At least at my CVS, they offer Novavax COVID vaccines free and without appointments. It might be necessary to schedule an appointment for flu and RSV vaccines.
