Let's start off with some basics. Cool, I haven’t started off a survey with basics in a while. What's your name? Robyn, but y’all who have stuck around for a while know that already. How old are you? 21. What's your hair and eye color? Hair’s black, eye color’s dark brown/black-ish. How tall are you? I’m pretty certain I’m 5′1. What's your relationship status? In one. Alright, enough of that. Let's move on to the random shit.

What's your favorite song? Uhhh at the moment it’s Sam Smith’s cover of Donna Summer’s I Feel Love. They did their own twist to it and it sounds incredible. It would probably take a bit to get used to in 2019, but once you warm up to the sound, the cover is just brilliant. What does that song mean? What is the message behind it? It’s a disco song, the lyrics just repeat for three straight minutes and is not supposed to be any deeper than ‘I feel love.’ Is it your favorite because you relate to it, or do you just like the beat? I love the beat, the sound, and what Sam offered to the song. Have any pets? If so, what are they and what's their names? Yes, I have a cute Santa Claus-outfit-wearing dog at the moment :)) His name is Kimi. Have you ever met your idol? I have never met Kristen Stewart, AJ Lee, Hayley Williams, nor Beyoncé. And I’d most likely pass even if there was a chance to meet any of them; I’m too afraid that I’d mess up in front of them. If so, were they nice or were they kind of an ass? What's your favorite method of gaming? (PC, Xbox, Playstation, etc) I don’t play a lot myself but I do enjoy watching games on Nintendo or Playstation consoles. If you're in college, what's your major and why did you pick it? I’m in journalism. I picked it because I thought it’s what I wanted to pursue back in high school. I was good at writing and loved telling stories, the obvious path was towards journ so I don’t hate myself or regret picking such a major. But through the years I’ve learned to hate it more and more though – my interests lie within public relations and advertising now, a complete 180 from the world of journalism. How're you doing today? A little too early to be asking that, it’s 7:43 in the morning. I do feel quite nice because classes ended up being suspended today due to the incoming typhoon, but otherwise it’s just mostly meh for now. What color are your bedroom walls? They’re white. Describe your favorite shirt. Right now my favorite shirt is a halter tank top I got for ₱50 at a small tiangge booth in Feliz, hahaha. I just wish I could wear it everyday without anyone judging because I look cute in it. Use this space to tell someone off. I don’t think anyone I know deserves that at the moment. What's your view on smart watches? Cool or a waste of money? Waste of money, but it doesn’t stop me from wanting one lmao. What is one poster that you have hanging on your bedroom wall of? I still have that damn poster of Nam Joo Hyuk up near my bed lol. I haven’t seen a k-drama since 2017, but I’m just too lazy to take it down. How many times have you moved in your life? That I can remember? Two. I think we moved a couple times more when I was an infant. If you moved, do you like where you are now better than where you were? It’s definitely more peaceful, quiet, and much much cleaner in our house; but there are days where I still miss having my cousins and grandma under the same roof. What's your favorite color and why? Pastel pink. It’s pleasant to the eyes and looks good on most stuff. My wallet, purse, main school notebook, one of my highlighters, my phone case, clipboard, backpack, and shoulder bag are all that color hahahaha Do you have a calendar? If so, what's the theme? I have one on my phone; I don’t really need a physical one. No theme because I don’t think my phone allows me to customize my calendar anyway. Have any famous person's autographs? I have AJ’s from a signed poster that I bought like 5-6 years ago from WWEShop. Was never actually sure if she actually signed it but it’s always easier to believe that. Do you draw well? That’s the worst thing I can do, or try to do at that. What type of cell phone do you have? I have an iPhone 8. Should you be doing anything else right now or are you just bored? I am actually supposed to be working on final requirements, but they’re all for my newspaper layout class and I cannot be ASSED to open Adobe InDesign and work on some dumb layout stuff right now. If you're in school/college, what's your favorite subject and why? This semester my favorite class is Kasaysayan 117, or Social History of the Philippines (‘Kasaysayan’ means history in Filipino). Social history veers away from the typical elite/heroes/war/colonization/what have you narratives that history books typically go with, and focuses instead on the developments of, say, gender, education, illnesses, and religion in the country. It basically focuses on the everyday life of the ordinary citizen, which I find more interesting and relatable than war stories. I certainly wish I can take this class more than once. Are you a cat or a dog person? Why? Dog person. They’re friendly and sweet and silly and will always stay by your side, which I love. I have never been able to connect with cats and finally at one point, trying just tired me out completely lmao HISS at me then, sis Tell me about the plot of your favorite book. Not my favorite, but definitely a memorable one – Scarlett O’Hara is in love with some dude named Leslie who’s married to his first cousin. Scarlett ends up gunning after him for a good chunk of time, even as she marries Rich Guy Rhett Butler and has a kid with him. Eventually [spoiler] kid dies and Rhett realizes Scarlett never cared for her just as Scarlett realizes she loves Rhett. Not a good ending for Scarlett. Bunch of people die. Oh and all of this takes place during the Civil War. Do you wear glasses or contacts? Glasses. I flinch at the idea of putting anything anywhere near my eye, so contacts are a no-no for me. What do you think about horror movies? It’s a hit or miss most of the time. Great genre with some even greater hits, though. If you love them (I do), what's your favorite? Misery or The Shining. Cliché picks, but I personally enjoyed both so why not. Got any cool Christmas presents picked out for family or friends yet? I dunno about ‘cool’ but I got Gabie a Hydro Flask water bottle and I’m SO excited for her to get it because she’s always been envious of mine and she’s always talking about wanting one because water tastes so crisp and fresh from those bottles. It’s kind of a bittersweet story for me though – I lost my own Hydro Flask a day after I got hers. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Do you do Black Friday shopping or wait for Cyber Monday? I do neither of those things because I’m from the Philippines and we have no idea what those holidays(?) mean. Have any mental illnesses? I’m sure I do, I just have never gotten myself checked. What's your favorite word and why? I’m not really obsessed with any right now. What is the most expensive thing you own, and what is it? It’s either my laptop or my phone...I’m not sure how much they were; my parents paid for both. Although I’m guessing the phone cost more because it was the newest in the iPhone line at the time of their purchase. Did you buy that item yourself? Hahahaha, nope. Super grateful to my parents for getting it for me despite knowing I have the tendency to crack and break all the phones I own. This current one is staying strong, though! Where do you work and what is your postion? I don’t have a job yet but I’m part of two organizations in college, if that counts. I’m the vice president for external affairs in my journalism org and associate editor in our graduating batch’s yearbook club. How often do you cuss? Probably once every few hours? Definitely way less than when I was an angsty, feisty, annoying little teenager lmao. What type of car do you drive, if any? I have a Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback. Are you happy with it? If no, what's your dream car? I’m happy with it; it’s small, convenient, and easy to drive. My dream car is something just as small but a little more fancy, so I’m wishing for a Mini haha. Do you have a lot of social media accounts? Which ones? Nah I just have three main ones – Twitter, Facebook, and this Tumblr. I’ve made accounts on other apps like Snapchat and Instagram, but I stopped using the former and I never use the latter. What is your favorite genre of music? I don’t have one. Does your family have holiday traditions? If so, what are they? It’s not a unique tradition but we go to my grand-aunt’s house and we do Monito-Monita, which is essentially a Filipino Secret Santa. We fix ourselves in a circle and when you’re It, you have to dance/walk/prance around with your gift while everyone sings the monito-monita song (which I’m too lazy to expound on, lol). When the song ends, you have to hand your ‘baby’ their gift. If you're in a relationship, are you happy with it? Yes. How long have you been with your significant other? Three years, but that’ll change to four by February. Do you like psychology? (It's my college major). I love it. It’s one of my the-one-that-got-away courses, along with history. I wanted to have a glimpse of psych by taking a psychology elective once, but I got a bad prof and never got in the mood to take another elective again, so that’s a shame. What is something your state is popularly known for? We don’t have states, we just have provinces and cities. Antipolo is known for their delicacies such as kasoy, suman, and latik. Do you like to do craft projects? If so, what's the coolest thing you made? Kind of? I don’t like anything I have to sculpt or mold myself; but lately I’ve been into paint-by-number kits and I asked Gab to get me a couple of them as a Christmas gift. It’ll help with my seasonal depression, so I’m excited to be preoccupied during the holiday break. Do you watch sports or do you think they're overrated? I don’t think they’re overrated. I just don’t find most of them interesting to watch. What's one occupation you think gets paid too much and doesn't deserve to? TROLLS Do you straighten your hair? No. Ever dyed your hair a color that isn't natural? (blue, pink, etc) I haven’t dyed it at all. How's your relationship with your parents? We have a best friends-type of relationship in that we banter and not opposed to insulting each other and cursing in front of one another, but I don’t let them know me any deeper than surface-level. The angst and trauma I developed due to my mom being horrid to me when I was younger permanently kept me from ever desiring a soft, emotional, intimate bond with her. And as for my dad, well he’s worked overseas all my life and I only get to see him once or twice a year, so it’s easy to understand why I have not developed a super super SUPER close bond with him as well. Do you still live with them or do you have your own house? I live with them but I’d love to have my own place soon. What's something you are currently saving money for to buy? More Christmas gifts for loved ones. I’ve only bought gifts for my girlfriend so far. Do you smoke/vape? If so, what brand do you smoke/what device do you use? I vape, but don’t smoke. Gab gave me her vape pen which is from a brand named Smok, because she soon learned after vaping a few times that she’s asthmatic. :( I do get disposable vape pens from Vedfun which I honestly prefer more, though. Ever done drugs? Other than painkillers, no. Tell me one of your worst habits. Letting myself go hungry because I’m a little obsessed with the thought of saving money. What's a weird quirk you have that no one else you know does? I have to lock my car doors three times in a row before I feel entirely secure. If you game, what type of headset do you use? What type of computer do you own, and do you like it? I have a Macbook Air, and I love it. What's the thing that annoys you the most? Metro Manila traffic. What brand of TV do you have? All of our TVs are Samsung, I think. Are you excited for Christmas? (It's December 1st today when I made this) I can take it or leave it. Tell me about your favorite vacation you've taken. Sagada x Baguio last 2014. I was hurting a lot that time because of recent shitty events that all happened to me, but the climate, the nature, and the peace and quiet allowed me to recharge and let everything out. It helped that there was a movie that had just come out then called That Thing Called Tadhana (Fate) wherein the lead girl was going through the same stuff I did, then she took a bus trip to Sagada, stood on top of a cliff, and yelled and cried her heart out. I set out to do the same (I didn’t scream though, just cry haha) and it was a good release. I’ll never forget that trip because I had never been more in touch with myself and allowed myself to be that raw until that week.

Tell me something cool about yourself. [continued all the way from 7 AM because I just got lazy for the rest of the morning. It’s now 4:41 PM.] Anyone outside of pro wrestling will probably not find this cool but I’ve been acknowledged by all three of my all-time favorite female figures in the industry (retweeted by AJ Lee, followed by Natalya, greeted happy birthday by Stephanie McMahon). All three are memories I’ll cherish forever. Did/do you get good grades in school/college? Not so much in grade school, because I was admittedly irresponsible and my elders didn’t pay much attention to my study habits, either. I got better in high school, but I still made sure not to tire myself out because I knew the grades I’d get then literally wouldn’t matter in college. Now that I’m in college and for once the grades DO matter, I’m working 15 times as hard and getting good grades throughout. What's your ringtone on your phone? They’re all ringtones provided by Apple. What's your favorite store to shop in? For clothes, independent stores would do. They can sell a tank top for ₱50 (1 USD) that I would otherwise find in H&M for like, ₱299 (6 USD) lmao. If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would buy and why? I’d pay off my parents’ various purchases like our house and cars so that the guilt doesn’t eat me up when I treat myself. How long have you had a Bzoink account? I don’t have a Bzoink account, but I’ve been using it to find surveys since 2008. My survey habit started veeeeery early, y’all.

Ever been to Field of Screams? If so, what's your favorite attraction? I have not. I’m not even sure I know what that is. Do you own a Polaroid camera? I don’t. Do you have hardwood floor in your room or carpet? Hardwood. It's a Saturday night, what are you typically doing? Taking surveys or catching up with work. It just clicks with me. Audrey and Albert very both very passionate in their roles and their tandem worked amazingly to bring the story to life.

Queer Eye; I made Gab watch the Jones Bar-B-Q episode which is usually cited as one of the best of the series. I loved watching it the second time. Do you prefer cable TV or do you use Netflix? I use Netflix; I haven’t tuned in to cable TV for a good 4-5 years maybe. What is your dream job and why? Working somewhere in WWE. That company’s been a part of my life for...welp, my whole life. A part of me just feels as though I HAVE to end up there. Do you think you would be a good therapist? Dear Dad--

I just learned that the swastika was a Hindu peace symbol before it was a Nazi symbol! I knew it was a religious symbol before Germany borrowed it, but I didn’t know which religion. It’s been a good weekend so far! I’ve spent most of yesterday writing, and I’ll probably spend a good bit of today writing as well. I was working on my Halloween movie guide, but I realized I’d already started doing a movie script, and I was already about ten pages in, and it had some good stuff in it. Also I found it was a lot more enjoyable to write the script, so that’s what I’ve started doing.

What I’m writing is a remake of a haunted house movie from 1973 called The Legend of Hell House. It’s based on the book Hell House by Richard Matheson. I already know of Richard Matheson because he wrote lots of famous episodes of the original Twilight Zone. Like, remember Nightmare at 30,000 Feet? William Shatner goes a bit nuts when he sees a man on the wing of the airplane he’s a passenger in. Richard Matheson wrote that, and he wrote this book about the fictitious Hell House, and he wrote the screenplay for the movie.

There’s not much to it, which is part of why I like it. Small cast, simple story, easy to update and improve for a modern audience. The story is this: A rich guy pays a scientist guy, who takes his wife along, and two psychics to all go into a haunted house and get proof of the afterlife. The four of them occupy the house, get in touch with the ghosties, figure out what the ghosties are so pissed about (which turns out to be hilarious), kill all the ghosties, and leave, losing two of the four characters in the process. You may have noticed something of a plot hole here. What about the rich guy who paid them for proof of life after death? The last thing that happens is, the two remaining protagonists turn on the ghost-eliminating machine, and walk out of the house empty handed. I think the rich guy is going to have something to say about that.

So I’m rewriting it. I’m making it modern, and giving the characters cell phones, and adding the word “fuck” a lot in the dialogue. In the story, one of the psychics is the only living victim of a previous attempt to investigate Hell House, and now he’s a bit of a mental wreck because of it. Since I heard a very cool NPR story about service dogs for soldiers with PTSD, I decided to give that character a PTSD service dog. Did you know they had those now? These dogs will make sure no one gets too close to you at Wal-Mart. They’ll remind you to take pills. They’ll turn on the lights and wake you up if you’re having night terrors. They’ll guide you to safety if you’re having a dissociative event. It’s fucking fascinating. So I’m giving one of those dogs to that character, and I can work all that shit into the script, and I now have a dog that I can put in harm’s way, only to survive, and later return with triumphal music, etc.

There are a lot of parts that I’m enjoying writing. At one point, the scientist’s wife goes sleepwalking, only because it’s in the haunted house, she becomes this sweaty nymphomaniac, who starts talking slutty to the psychic guy. (Not so much sleepwalking as sleep-whoring, I guess) So he has to slap her to wake her up, and there she is, in mid-whore, not knowing why she’s in the living room with her robe around her ankles. Good stuff. I’ve made sure the dog is out of the room for that part, since it might have interfered with her trying to grab the psychic guy’s goodies.

Took me until just this week, but I think I have a plan for my life now. I want to finish writing this script, edit the hell out of it, show it to anyone who’ll read it, get it as perfect as I can. Then I believe I’m supposed to pay some money and get it copyrighted. The next phase is somewhat important: I then have to do two things. I have to (a) start writing my next script, and (b) I have to find representation. I need to show my script(s) to someone who will then decide to take me on as their client and work with movie studios to get my shit produced. To that end, I’m focusing on stories with small casts and limited settings, so they’re easier to film in the time of Covid. I’ve heard Hollywood loves it when you have “an idea.”

So I’m going to continue working on the Hell House script until it’s done, and then I have a few ideas for the next thing I’d like to do. I love the idea of taking older movies and refurbishing them for modern audiences, partly because I’ve never been good at coming up with a plot. I can write dialogue, but as far as a story, I’d rather borrow someone else’s. I’d love to remake the movie Rollercoaster, for example, about a guy who puts bombs at amusement parks. Also I’d like to write a new take on The War of the Worlds, which tells three simultaneous stories: (1) the story of performing the War of the Worlds radio broadcast in 1938, with Orson Welles, (2) the story of the people listening to the broadcast, who thought it was real, and panicked, and (3) the story of what the panicked people thought was happening, with the martian cylinder, and the heat ray, killing the reporter and attacking the army, standing up on legs and terrorizing the countryside. I’ve always thought someone ought to make a movie about what the radio listeners thought was happening, as if the Martian attack had been real. That movie would not be so easy to film in the time of Covid.

So what else is going on here? It’s fall, all the trees are officially beautiful. We have snow in our forecast, although none has fallen yet. I chose not to watch the last presidential debate, because they tend to get my blood up and make my hands shake, because I need to punch someone, and there’s no one around who needs punching. But soon the election will happen, and we’ll all deal with the results, and we can all get on with our lives, planning what we’re going to eat on Thanksgiving. I’ve read at least one news headline suggesting that, if you love your family, you won’t gather for Thanksgiving (because of Covid) and I think it just officially makes 2020 the worst year of all time. No Macy’s parade. And they made candy corn that tastes like a whole Thanksgiving meal, including turkey candy corn and green bean candy corn. I hope someone got fired for thinking that up. That’s not adding any joy to the world.

But Zach and I are doing well. We continue to be grateful for having a second cat. Having two cats is so much more than having two individual cats, because they play together in ways they’d never play with us. It’s like each cat has three people looking after it, me, Zach, and the other kitty. They’re still grooming each other, tussling every day, and sleeping in a pile. Since Horta just got fixed about 10 days ago, we’re still keeping an eye on her incision, but she seems to have healed up quickly and completely. The dissolving stitches did their work. She’s more of a light-speed spaz than ever before.

I’ve completed about 31 pages of script so far, and the goal will be to make it to 100 pages. I’ll give you another update next Sunday and hopefully I’ll be a good bit further along. Remember, if you hear on the radio that we’re being invaded, don’t collect all your loved ones and firearms and get into the car! It’s only Halloween.

Render unto Caesar

Sermon for Proper 24a / Matthew 22: 15-22

I am reading a book at the moment called “The Joy of ..... Tax”.

That’s T.A.X. – in case anyone misheard and thought I said some other three letter word ending in “X.” (Don’t pretend you didn't think it).

The first record we have a tax is from the ancient Babylonians. Even before there was money, as we understand it, people paid tax in goods – sheep and cows – and even in labour – a day’s work. It even looks like there were tariffs on imports – there is a record from around 1900BC of a person being imprisoned for smuggling. So, not only have we had tax for a long time, we’ve also had tax evaders.

One of the points made in the book is that tax is not just about money, but it is also a government and its values. And in liberal western democracies, where we elect governments on the basis of their tax promises; tax says a lot about society.

It is similar to a story that the former Bishop of Manchester, Bishop Nigel, told when he last visited here. He spoke a keen young man who goes to visit an old, wise Spiritual Director for the first time for guidance. They have a productive time together and mutually agree that it would be good to meet up again. And as the young man is leaving the Spiritual Director asks that him bring his last three bank statements with them next time. He is a bit taken a back. “Why should I bring my bank statements” he asks, after all he is there to talk of spiritual matters, of prayer, of inner discovery, and the stuff of heaven. So the Spiritual Director simply explains, “if you want to know the true values of a person, look at how they spend their money.”

I wonder what my bank statement says about me? How do I get my money and how do I spent it? I wonder what your bank statement says about you? What does it say of your priorities and what you truly consider to be important?

The reason I’ve started talking about tax is, of course, because today’s gospel is about a tax.

In particular, the tax concerned is not income tax or V.A.T. but a poll tax. You may remember the hatred of this tax, in some quarters, when it was temporarily introduced into Britain. But the riots in London were as nothing when compared with the rebellion that broke out in Palestine when the Roman governors began it there. Every man and women had to pay one denarius (that is the equivalent of one day’s pay) each year on top of all the other taxes.

One of the racist stereotypes that persists through the ages is of the money grabbing Jew. We can easily picture a character like Fagin from Oliver Twist, rubbing his hands together while gazing lovingly at a pile of coins. And like most racist images it breaks down when put against the facts.

The Jews of Jesus’ time were not opposed to this tax because they didn’t want to part with their money (or at least not to any greater extent than any of us want to part with money). The devout Jews of Jesus time were already paying a 10% tithe to the Temple, as many do to this day.

When we had a stewardship campaign a few years ago, the Diocesan Stewardship Officer told us that the average church goer in the Diocese of Manchester is donating about 3.5% of their income to the church. And yet we don’t keep promoting the stereotype of the money-grapping Anglican. But the simple fact is that, on average, a devout Jew is giving three times more than the devout member of the C of E.

The reason this tax was hated was because of who it was paid to – it went to the Romans, the foreign oppressor. This tax began the year Jesus was born. In fact the census that forced Mary and Joseph to travel Bethlehem was taken in order to begin this tax. In the 30 odd years it had been collected it was still despised.

In today’s gospel reading, the Pharisees and the Herodians are out to get Jesus. The previous day to this encounter, Jesus has cleansed the temple throwing out the money changers and stall holders. He was becoming a serious nuisance. They needed to either get rid of him or, at the very least, take him down a peg or two.

So they turn to the old problem of Roman tax. They much have thought they could really catch him out with this problem of the poll tax. They had a sure fire way of trapping him. So they begin by trying to lull Jesus into a false sense of security, they flatter him.

“Teacher,” they said ” we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth,” (Have you ever heard anything so grovelling?)

Then they put to him the supposedly innocent question, “Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor or not”. This question was supposed to be one which would get Jesus into trouble no matter what he said.

First Jesus could have replied “Yes, it is lawful”. This would have meant he lost the support of many ordinary people.

Many people still thought the Messiah was to be a political figure, a warrior, who would drive out the Romans and that Jesus was this person. But if Jesus said they should pay their taxes, these people would desert him. This Jesus of Nazareth was clearly not a warrior King sent by God if he went round telling everyone to pay their taxes to the foreign oppressor.

He would also lose the support of any devout Jews who followed him. The roman coin, which had to be used to pay the tax, was a piece of idolatry and blasphemy. Not only did it have a picture of the roman emperor on it, but it also proclaimed that this emperor was divine. No self-respecting religious Jew would even touch such a graven image. So Jesus clearly could not say pay the tax.

But Jesus could not say do not pay the tax either. If he said this, the Herodians, who only had power because of Roman support, could have reported Jesus to the Romans on charges of treason and got rid of him that way.

It was supposed to be a no win situation.

So what does Jesus do?

First, he asks to see the coin. It is such a simple act, but it turns the conflict on its head. Those out to trap Jesus are suddenly themselves trapped by Jesus’ request that he see the coin. For what are these righteous and respectful Pharisees, the pillars of their community, doing with such a blasphemous object on their person? Suddenly the accusers (for that is what they really are) become the accused. Such an apparently innocent request, to see the coin, exposes their hypocrisy for all to see.

Jesus seems to have had a particular hatred of the hypocrisy of religious people:

“Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!”, Jesus says elsewhere in the gospels. I always feel a little guilty when I read of Jesus gunning for the hypocrites, for if we are honest, who has not fallen into hypocrisy? We all fail to live up to the standards of goodness and honesty that we proclaim in our worship.

But then I remember the story of the Tax Collector and the Pharisee who go to the Temple to pray. The Pharisee stands in the middle of the Temple, thanking God loudly, that he is not like other people and a sinner, listing his acts of righteousness. The tax collector stands in the corner and simply says, “God be merciful to me, a sinner”. And it is the tax collector who goes home justified.

It is the Tax collectors utterly honest act of self-recognition before God that saves him from being one of the hypocrites. The problem with the opponents of Jesus was not so much that they failed to live up to their religious ideals, we all do that, but that they never acknowledged this before God. It was their lack of humility and honesty.

After asking to see the coin Jesus says his famous reply of “Give to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” Jesus’ double-edged command throws back the question of taxes to the accusers and issues a strong challenge.

Some people, reading this passage have proposed that Jesus was saying that the Church and the State should be kept separate. The affairs of religion and the affairs of politics are separate realms, or kingdoms, which should never meet. These are the emperor’s things over here, and these are God’s concerns, and they must be kept distinct and distant from each other. But the saying is too brief and specific to mean this.

There is a long tradition in the old testament of the prophets intervening in the political discourse of their day. If this phrase says anything to me, “Give to the Emperor the things that are the Emperor’s” it says that we should be good citizens of our societies. And being a good citizen in a liberal democracy means being informed and being involved.

In Jesus’ day there was an Emperor – a supreme ruler, a dictator. And in that society there was little choice but to pay your tax and do as you were told.

In our day we don’t have an Emperor. In a liberal democracy “giving to the Emperor” means giving our tax, but it also means giving our opinion, our intelligence, and our values. We have a Christian duty to stand up for God’s values in our society and we do this through the ballot box, and by making clear to our elected officials what our societies priorities and values should be.

If our bank statement says something about our values, then our government’s bank statement also reveals our society’s values. On the income side, what does it say about our society that poor and average earners pay a much greater percentage of income in tax than the wealthy. Yes, we told the rich pay more because income tax levels go up, but when you factor in things like, V.A.T., national Insurance, petrol duty, road tax etc etc, the rich pay proportionately less in tax. What is that saying?

On the other side of the balance sheet - where we spend our money as a society - what does it say about our society that our government is still pressing ahead with the roll out of Universal Credit when virtual every agency and expert is saying that it has already, and will, cause thousands of people to fall into debt and increase even more the number of homeless people our streets.

“Give to the Emperor the things that are the Emperors”, Jesus said, What are those “things”? Sometimes those things are our duty to give our society and government our loyalty. But sometimes it is our Christian duty to make clear our contempt and disgust at what is happening.

The second half of Jesus saying is, of course, “and to God the things that are God’s.”

This part of the saying was a challenge to Jerusalem, the Temple, the rulers and all the hypocritical underlings: give God back, what belongs to him. Jesus’ consistent accusation is that the religious leaders have failed to worship their true and living God. They have failed to live as God’s people as a witness to the world.

Only the day before, Jesus has caused a small riot in the Temple because the very place where Israel was supposed to come and give God the things of God, in worship, prayer and sacrifice, has become a den of robbers. So concerned with the small details of religion, status and power, the letter of the law, they have ceased to live out the spirit of their faith and give God the worship he deserves.

And this is a trap that not only the leaders of first century Judaism fall into. We all fall into it.

It happens easily when we turn inwards and stop looking outwards.

It happens all too easily when we start to think we have all the answers.

It happens most easily of all, when we forget our dependence on God, and think we don’t need God anymore.

Today’s gospel reading is not about Jesus delivering a theory on the division of Church from State or Politics and Christianity. The bible elsewhere, teaches us clearly that our faith clearly has political consequences. Neither is it about Jesus showing off how clever and intelligent he is in avoiding the trap of the Pharisees. Although, no doubt, this was one of the reasons why this particular story was remembered amongst the early Christians.

Today’s gospel is about exposing the religious hypocrisy which comes when we abandon being honest with ourselves and humble before our God and our neighbour. And it is about the ordering of our priorities and the promotion of God’s values - in our own personal lives and decisions, and also in our society and government. Amen.

I’ve talked about this before on tumblr, but I really want to reiterate: research every source before you swallow it. I don’t mean fact check everything, though that’s a good idea if you have the resources to do so. I mean when you consume a piece of writing, ask questions about its creation. Google who wrote it and, more importantly, why. Nothing is written without a reason, and that reason could be as innocent as “I found a document and thought it was cool” or as dire as “I want to cover up the history of our company’s founder as a racist”. See what else that writer has written. Look up their background. See what they’re known for and what they believe. Whether you’re reading books, articles, blog posts, whatever, if you see anything that strikes you as questionable, ask why it was written.

This can also apply to media other than writing. Let’s take the statue of Robert E. Lee that has caused so much hoopla in Charlottesville. Let’s look at who commissioned it, what else they commissioned, and why.

Now, the statue is actually relatively recent. It was not created during the war or even directly after the war, despite what a lot of people seem to think. This statue was not erected by grieving parents who’d just lost their children to a war. It was not set up to commemorate the recently dead. The statue of Robert E. Lee was commissioned in 1917 and erected in 1924. The commissioner was Paul Goodloe McIntire, who is mostly known for philanthropy and racist-ass statues. Yeah. This is not the only one.

Now, besides paying an artist (two artists, actually, after the first died) to immortalize Lee, McIntire also commissioned three other statues from other artists. They portrayed George Rogers Clark, Stonewall Jackson, and Lewis and (William) Clark. If you know who these historical personages are, you know that they’re all related to the history of US expansion and subjugation. Jackson and Lee were both Confederate generals, and Lewis and Clark are famous for their exploration of the region west of what used to be the US. (And honestly, you’d need a whole post just to deconstruct the positive narrative of that expedition, but it was shitty on a whole lot of levels.) Most important to look at, though, is probably the statue he commissioned of George Rogers Clark, brother to William Clark and a war “hero” who is known for drastically increasing America’s size. His interactions and negotiations with assorted Native American tribes are romanticized, and people often gloss over how many he straight-up killed.

You can probably see why this is a divisive statue. The positions of supplication are really, really not a good look -- especially considering the violent history associated with this man.

So okay, the three other statues McIntire are all pushing the same racist narrative of American triumph. There’s this same romanticization of American “heroes” that either helped economic and spatial expansion (at the expense of slaves and various local tribes) or fought against the government when it tried to prevent people from continuing this behavior. These statues present an American ideal of a spitfire adventurer who won’t take no for an answer. Who take what they want through blood. And these statues are recent. They look back at the past with a sort of rosy nostalgia for the violence of America’s history, for the intrepid power that they see America as embodying. These are statues that were conceived of and constructed in the burgeoning era of Jim Crow laws. Like those laws, these statues represent a backlash against fledgling African American rights and power as well as the concrete codification of new discrimination against them. We are talking about a period that saw the peak of the Ku Klux Klan, and that context cannot be ignored.

Paul Goodloe McIntire was a very rich man and a very powerful man. His father had been the mayor of Charlottesville, and he made his fortune in the stock market. He’s also well-known for donating a veritable shit-ton of money to libraries, schools, etc. The park that the statue of Robert E. Lee resides in, Emancipation Park (formerly Lee Park), was donated in its entirety by McIntire. He also donated McIntire Park, a park that was whites only and Washington Park (named for Booker T.) which was “for use as a playground for the colored citizens of Charlottesville.” Your first thought might be “wow, he donated a whole park for African Americans” but the actual effect of these donations was supporting and helping to codify segregation. The man certainly had an agenda. That is the history that people should be assigning to this statue of Robert E. Lee, not this southern heritage bullshit. The statue would actually make an interesting addition to a museum -- in an exhibit on the creation of the myth of the proud and genteel South.

Look, I’m not technically a historian. My specialization is in religion and folklore. I had to look up all the information in this post, but what I can tell you off the top of my head is that the US has a real problem with hagiography. Hagiography technically means writing about the lives of saints, but it also refers to elevating normal people to saint-like positions. It’s the hero-worship, the downright deification, of American personages. America creates its historical folklore at breakneck speed, and some of that is pretty innocuous, like George Washington cutting down a cherry tree, and some of it is pretty horrifying, like George Washington as a benevolent slave owner. Frankly, this mythologizing of historical fact is normal. Every nation and culture does it. But we are just so fucking bad at recognizing it! We build up these people, these places, these times, and we just swallow what we’ve heard. Because heritage. Because tradition. Because it makes a hell of a good story.

I’m not telling you to agree with everything I say, and I certainly don’t want you to just listen to what I say without double-checking it, either. I’m just begging you to start recognizing this folklore when you see it. Start asking yourself who these narratives benefit and why. It’s the only true defense against propaganda.

Michi comes from a very rich, famous, and powerful family. He shared their status of course. He has several older and younger siblings, however. So when he hit his high school years, he began to feel left out and started rebelling. It started out in small ways, but once he became an adult, this got more dangerous. He started joining in on unsafe and illegal activities with his friends and made the horrible mistake of posting a video of it online. Said activities included, but weren’t limited to- drug use/possesion, trespassing, property damage, and even petty theft. Of course, he got in some major trouble, having to stay 6 months in jail. It was originally a year, but his parents bailed him out after he ‘learned his lesson.’ However, because the media found out about their rebellious son and it reflected badly on them, he wasn’t allowed to go back home.

His time spent in poverty really opened his eyes, everything he saw wasn’t what he was taught. And so, fueled by his anger about the way the world is, Michi started earning money by freelance dancing. At parties, clubs, etc. It wasn’t enough though. Soon, he turned to also doing some sex work on the side- even becoming a camboy once he could afford a phone. Also using his phone, he started up his vlog again, but smarter and cleaner this time. It was hard for him to get started vlogging again, as most fans didn’t trust him. But soon, he incorporated messages in his videos that went along with his new goal in life- to bring attention and help to those in poverty, and open people’s eyes to said issues. He got so popular that he even has a fanclub now (they call themselves ‘Chi’s). And through some less obvious messages in his videos, he’s slowly starting to get people to think about the world around them.

And so, with the money he earned from dancing, sex work (which he no longer does now), and eventually vlogging once he regained traction, he worked his way back to his family. His siblings liked him even less after he returned- for they thought he didn’t deserve to be a part of the family, and he had changed and learned to question things so much that he’d get into fights with their parents all the time. So he moved into his own apartment. While he doesn’t say anything about it publicly, sometimes the urge to do something dangerous is still present in him, even though he holds it back (causing himself emotional distress sometimes). However, as his family didn’t like him, after he had ‘changed’, they paid someone to start up a scandal, causing Michi to not only lose followers again (even after he told them that he didn’t do it) but to also be sent, out of the country for ‘safety’, to Hongdae University to 'change his ways’.

Said scandal was the reason he stopped doing sex work- as they claimed he had scammed not only him, but his daughters out of money. He didn’t, though. After his time spent in poverty he already knew that his previous ways were horrible. The only followers that stayed following him and being his fans believed him. As to regain more traction and show that he isn’t the person everyone thinks he is, he’s been vlogging and doing numerous charitable and good deeds. It seems like it’s out of the kindness of his heart- which some of it is- but not all of it. He’s also using it as a step to his ultimate goal.

Speaking of his fans, he loves them dearly. So long as they don’t stalk him, he is more than happy to interact with his wonderful fans. He seems like he’d be rude and cold to you, but that’s just his face. In actuality, he’s one of the sweetest guys you’ll ever meet. He’d gladly give anyone the shirt off his back if nessecary, or even give other people his food. And he doesn’t limit his public dancing and wandering around to just the community he lives in- he goes everywhere, happy to spread his messages and happiness. Even though he’s currently middle class thanks to his family, he still would do anything to help people that he deems worthy/deserving of it. Even going so far as to let people stay at his apartment (not always a good choice though).

On the other hand, he just doesn’t know when to stop. Whether that be stop questioning things and live a little, or to start questioning things and stop being gullible. He has a tough time between distinguishing those times. He is also too trusting- almost anyone can tell him a sob story and he’d vouch for them to get them everything they 'need’. That is the reason why his parents now have a bodyguard follow him around. Lastly, he’s very blunt too- every time he questions anything or thinks deeply, he becomes very blunt and if you’re not being a good person, he would absolutely be unafraid to call you out on it and call you an a-hole.

Myeongjin Monk, a Buddhist representative representing the era, appeared in MBC’s Bae Cheol-soo Jam broadcasted on the 23rd.

“I’m on the other side of me. If I am a system compliant, this is a system challenge. I look at the injustice of society, but I endure it, but this guy is like a teenage student,” said Myeongjin Monk.

Chulsoo Bae brought up the story of deprivation of the victory and asked if he was right to call him a monk. If you shave your head and wear a robe, you will be disgusted, or if you do something that is not profitable for a story, or if you live a personal life, you will be a monk. “It is often the case that the content is not a monk.”

Myeongjin Monk, who lives in Daegwanryeong, Gangwon-do, said, “There are people who want to hear me, so I gather about 100 people once a month through simple meetings.” Snowboarding was also revealed with a high level of skill, creating a surprise.

Regarding the reasons for enjoying snowboarding, swimming, etc., “I have a strong personality. I’m afraid I’m afraid to go out to the sea alone. I’m excited about the challenge. Next, “Love Your Self,” there is a passage in the scriptures when I listen to this song with my thoughts on how to love myself. Recently, ‘Black Swan’ was also released. It depicts the place that is always up and about, a city with a spirit of gold and a determination to never say die, even in the wake of terrorist attacks and natural calamities. Mumbai boasts of a population of about 100 million. There is an extensive network of flights from Mumbai’s Sahar (International) and Santa Cruz (Domestic) airports. International and domestic flights connect it to almost all major cities. Trains are available from all major stations of India. The Intra city trains are the fastest and the best way of commuting through the city. Bus services both inter and intra city are equally efficient.

We Mumbaikars represent the true spirit of India as this city is a crucible of people from different religions, caste and communities. Representative of the “never say die” spirit, these people are full of life and vigour Food is the highlight of this city. Chaupati beach offers one a wide variety of street food ranging from bhelpuri (puffed rice mixed with onions, chillies and sauces), panipuri (puffed puris filled with sprouts and potatoes), vada pav (a deep fried cutlet made of potatoes in a round shaped bread) and paw bhaji (vegetables eaten with round shaped bread). The Clinton VS Trump 2016 Presidential Election (The year of entitlement and hypersensitivity)

In all my 52 years of life I’ve never witnessed or felt such and emotional rollercoaster ride as I have with the 2016 presidential election between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. The mudslinging between candidates was gut wrenching and it got worse as days drifted by. As a nation I feel we need a mental, spiritual, and emotional cleansing from all the filth we have had to take in for the past 18 months. The skewed biased news casting from various television stations left many of us feeling depressed, hopeless and dirty. What has happened to beautiful America? Our land of the free and home of the brave!

I will tell you what has happened. It has been a slow yet swift process to bring us to this point in America where everyone is so easy offended and quick to judge. I hope you will listen to what I have to say. I will try to be as unbiased as I can. I will try to extend grace and understanding to all people groups whether you are a Jew, Muslim, Christian, black, white, Latino, gay or straight, I think we can all agree that there is no denying we have a problem in America. We are headed to a point of no return if we do not turn this ship around.

The sense of entitlement regardless of its cost is sewn into the fabric of our nation. We are a society laced with hypersensitivity. We have thrown away the moral Christian values that our country was founded on by our forefathers so many years ago. Satisfying and pleasing the immediate desires of the flesh has now become the number one thing to obtain no matter the cost. We have people crossing our borders without proper documentation who feel entitled to take a spot on our jobs sites and displacing those allowed to be here. They want their slice of American pie. I do believe we should allow people of all nations to join our great nation. But not without going through the proper channels.

America is an English speaking nation and therefore if you enter America you should expect to learn the American language, which is English. I have gone to Wal-Mart and a few other places only to ask the worker in the isle a question about an item I couldn’t find only to hear, “No English” from the worker. Our box tops and labels are equally English and Spanish. I wonder if several millions of us English speaking American’s crossed the Mexican border and took up their jobs would they accommodate us by speaking English and change all their product packaging? I have seen undocumented workers pile into the back of work trucks to do construction work thinking it was perfectly ok. A man I was dating at the time made the mistake of hiring some of them to work in a private home he was flipping. When he went to buy them lunch, they robbed him of his cash, a camera I had just bought him and cleaned out his fridge. This may be an exception and not the case for all undocumented workers but shouldn’t we do background checks and require legal citizenship? Yet again we have slipped into the hypersensitive way of thinking, we don’t want to offend anyone. We must have proper checks and balances at our borders. The most dangerous of all are the immigrants practicing Sharia Law entering our country. It is no wonder President Trump wants to protect our borders. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this the people who practice this read and live by the Coran. They are asked to kill the infidel. Anyone who does not believe in Sharia Law is the infidel and that is the rest of us. So being murdered, yes here in America is a real possibility. The alarm is sounding and we need to put a stop to this immediately. Are we excluding and marginalizing Islamic people? I don’t believe so when it comes to religious belief. Nowhere in the bible or any other religion that I am aware does it say it is ok to murder. This becomes a safety of protecting human life issue. It is morally, ethically, and spiritually wrong to murder anyone. America needs to sound the alarm. Not everyone will like the fact that Donald Trump was selected to be our 45th President. Not everyone will realize that perhaps they are being saved from a clear and present danger. We all don’t come in pretty packages, we all fall short and we all are here to grow and learn from each other. I hope that you will keep an open mind to that now that President Obama and the majority of the Democratic party has had to step down and now allow the Republican’s to take a turn. This is what our forefathers set up for us to run a somewhat stable democracy. We’ve got to grow up and learn to take turns.

The educational system holds the heart and pulse of our future. I am a recent college graduate and have worked for the public school system for 10 years now. I live daily with the sense of entitlement and hypersensitivity staring me directly in the face. Children are often a direct reflection of what their home life is like. Children today are taught everyone is a winner and no one is a loser. Unfortunately this is a detrimental way of thinking and can set children up for failure as they grow into adulthood and enter the real world. The truth is, not everyone is a winner and there will always be a loser. Knowing how to handle these facts is crucial to the future of a child. This kind of thinking will lead to disaster. It’s in the losing that personal growth takes place and personal character is built. Now we have a generation of young people with a sense of entitlement without the work being put into it. In the school system discipline has been replaced with a system of coddling and rewards. Students are allowed to throw temper tantrums, cry, threaten, lash out, and we must tolerate the behavior, keep them in the classroom so they don’t miss out on their education and carry clipboards were we document their behavior with a happy or frowny face to help them make it through their day. Where is old-fashioned discipline and character building? As teachers we are fighting a losing battle. Our hands are now tied. Parents need to parent and quit expecting teachers to do what you were called to do. The young people we have today will be our next leaders. It’s time we get them on the path to success and great personal character.

In college I was a straight A student except for the 3 B’s I received. Two were from lesbian professors in the English department who plastered my assignments with rainbow stickers and comments reflecting their disapproval of my Christian stance. The other B that I received was from an older male professor who was a priest who clearly disagreed with my viewpoints. One fall day he called me into a meeting with him behind closed doors where he proceeded to throw some textbooks at the door to express his anger with me. His words still ring in my ears today,

“You Jesus people just bother me! You go around trying to talk about Him all the time and come to my door.”

Wow! I never realized a priest could feel this way. He was so hypersensitive. We do not live in a neutral world. Even collage professors have very biased opinions. Liberals scream, “Tolerance! Equality for all!” Yet are unable to extend those same sentiments and grace back to those with conservative viewpoints. This is the thought process we have seen through our entire 2016 presidential election and now after President Trump’s Inauguration. We see riots in the streets, the destruction of property, vile acts of disrespect against the President and each other right here in the streets of America. We have seen the temper tantrums from the left as people scream, “What about our rights?!” Cards are pulled out of the deck, “Black lives matter, Latino lives matter, LGBT equality,” etc.. and instead of taking a mature approach to making your voices heard, people take to the streets displaying the most disrespectful signs I would never want my children and grand children to see. Vile acts of desecration on pictures of our new president. Those that behave in this manner are not only disrespectful and ungodly but can never be taken seriously.

Without Christ and a moral compass we as a nation will surely be lost and given over to darkness. I think people are living in fear of change. Whether it’s good or bad change, no one wants to leave their comfort zone. The layers of the onion have now been peeled back and the world see’s what the American people are really made of. There is no more hiding that face that we as a nation has murdered over 60 million babies. Most of these murders were done in the name of hiding sexual immorality and inconvenience. The bible has something to say about this,

“1 But understand this: In the last days terrible times will come. 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3unloving, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, without love of good,…” ( 2 Timothy 3:2)

We have replace “In God We Trust” with “In Myself I Trust.” We are lovers of “self” with social media, in which I have been equally guilty. Our lives are lived out relishing reality T.V. instead of living out our own lives to the fullest. We savor television stars disasters as they unfold before us, make them rich by supporting their shows, buying their products and then coveting them with our jealousy after we’ve made them rich and famous. Is it no surprise we are in this place today? Wake up America! The night watchman has fallen asleep and the wolf snuck into our camp. The wolf is clothed in selfishness, pride, greed, jealousy and unforgiveness.

When it comes to the election no one wants to forgive Hillary or President Trump for their past indiscretions. Yet we want God to forgive us. We turn a blind eye to one and hold the stone to crucify the other. No matter who would have won the election plenty would cry foul! We are failing as a nation. We’ve lost control of our morals. What was once a sin is now called “old fashioned thinking.” It has been revised for those want and "ok" on gay marriage, sexual reassignment as well as a host of other things. Since when did God rewrite his holy word? Since when did Jesus Christ make a mistake? Never! What part of Jesus dying on the Cross needs to be rewritten to suit our ever- changing society? Never!

We are here because the media has fed us lies, pitted us against each other, bred free thinking so much that we are self destructing. I have tried to remain unbiased in my writing but it is impossible to separate Christ and morality because they are truly one in the same.

It is my prayer that regardless of your view point and walk in life you would find peace, love, acceptance, and tolerance for “all” for the sake of mankind or “humankind” if being politically correct is needed. We share planet earth together. We must walk peacefully together even in the midst of our differences. May you find that peace!
