i still wish sylvando's stats were distributed differently in dq11 or that he learned some fire spells .. he has like 330 magical might at level 99 or sometjing which is pointless becuase the strongest spell he learns is Swoosh and the output for that caps at like 200 magical might..
itd have made more sense for him to have less magical might and to put more into his hp, so it'd at least be closer to Jade's or something rather tham having the same hp as Erik at lvl 99. oorrrr he coulddve had some fire spells like frizz/frizzle/kafrizz which would make sense because he can breathe fire..
#i feel like frizz line would make more sense than the sizz line because he already learns woosh/swoosh so sizz line would be redundant#i wish i was like savvy with computers and game modding so i could mod dq11 just for fun and do random things u___u#that would scratch an itch in my brain#i would love to make jasper a party member and give him all the moves i think he would have.....#and rework rab's skill tree so that claws arent so weak .. or just buff claws in general#bc why the heck do they have the same attack as like wands#oh yeah another move that would love to change is Party Pooper. the useless spear skill that serena and jade get#it costs 16 skill points to learn and its weaker than Helichopter because it deals 90% damage okay#first of all serena learns swoosh/kaswoosh so like its already useless for her and thennn jade learns vacuum smash and like 20 other moves#that also hit groups of enemies so like. it would make sense if Party Pooper was a very early game skill so you learn it immediately but it#like takes a while to learn it before you have enough skill points.. i feel like that couldve just been handled differently#like either buff Party Pooper to be stronger or make it like the very first spear skill you can learn or something so it has some purpose#not that every attack needs an optimal purpose but you know.. its fun to think about#oh i would also let Serena learn Crushed Ice in Act 2. u____u spears are so freakin useless on serena in Act 2 and it would at least give#them some use vs Tatsunaga because it's weak to ice and that'd be cool#instead of Be Like Water#or does she have Counter Wait in Act 2 i dont remember#why must her strongest spear move be Thunder Thrust until Act 3

I wish they'd given us a pre-Act 2 Serena traveling on her own story quest. ;-; They owed us for the Jade one...
i both agree and disagree? because on one hand serena is my second favorite character in the game (nearly tied with sylvando!) and i'd LOVE to have seen more of her, i feel like giving her a pre-act 2 arc would have made the reveal about veronica not have as big of an impact on the player? (dragon quest xi spoilers under the cut if you haven't played the game)
the scene between the twins on yggdrasil really gave me huge "oh god they're going to die" flags for both of them, so i feel like by giving only one of them a character intermission (that's what i like to call those little pre-act 2 story quests personally!) and not the other it makes the moment where we see that serena is okay a little less relieving, and also makes veronica's death feel less sudden. if i'm making sense?
BUT I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO HAVE ONE FOR HER TOO. i would have loved a serena side story about her being independent, especially because of the "you've always been a little slow" sentiment between the twins (which isn't veronica trying to insult her! or at least not to me, more of a "i need to watch out for you more"). i think a side story about her doing small acts to help others, or even finding herself in a position of leadership for a short while would have been AMAZING. especially since jade's quest is so god awful.

How much is your personal enjoyment affected when streaming a game vs. playing a game on your own? because I truly wonder (as someone who plays games as a hobby) how playing a game as your job changes your perspective on video games as a whole.
Well, I still play games as a hobby! I just fucking love video games. Whether my enjoyment is hindered or heightened by streaming a game vs playing it on my own is completely up to the game itself and also whats going on in my life. Really not a one-size-fits-all kinda thing. Streaming Dragon Quest VIII has been an enriching and incredible experience and, though it's taking a long time to get through it, I'm always excited to come back to it. Streaming Alan Wake ended up kinda being a nightmare for me when I first tried it because the presentation of the game's story and dialogue directly clashed with my commentary style. Neither of these examples were sure bets and I actually kinda expected the opposite of both. It's really hard to predict how a game is gonna fit the format, which is why I try not to have too many hangups about dropping things when I have to. It can definitely get pretty daunting with new releases coming around though because the one thing that streaming really hinders about the overall gaming experience is when I'm actually allowed to play the games I want to. I can almost assure you if I had not started Jedi Survivor on stream I would have finished it by now and be well on my way to the platinum trophy, but on stream we're not even halfway through the game cause the schedule has just not allowed me to go any faster. For DQ8 that's actually been kind of a blessing because I'm literally restricted from binging the game like I did with DQ11 and getting burned out, so I've been pacing myself with it really well. But this summer a TON of games are about to drop in a row that I've all said I'm gonna stream so like, the scheduling aspect is a major consideration and potential stress point. But if the games themselves are good, they usually stay just as good if not better on stream.

would you say there's any intentional firsthand Dragon Quest influence? (I specify "intentional" and "firsthand" because of the whole "early Dragon Quests are one of the ur influences on later jRPGs so secondhand influence is inevitable")
Oh for sure, even beyond its inherent influence on the genre. While I haven't played many Dragon Quest games and would more directly compare my storytelling to FF, I played all the way through DQ11 and completely fell in love with it after it came to Switch. There might not be as many overt allusions to it in SLARPG compared to the number of FF nods, but it kind of served as my guiding star for what a well-balanced JRPG looks like in the later years of development. Things like every character being able to equip multiple kinds of weapons and armor to give you some options, rather than just giving everyone a linear series of character-specific gear like a lot of post-SNES FF games do
There's some DQ influence in the party's movesets, too. Allison's move "Fan the Flames" is just an outright copy of a couple combos Erik has in DQ11 where if an enemy has a status inflicted he can use an attack that removes the status but does massive damage

i was saying about something i discovered and worked out in dq3 hd-2d remake i thought was cool but i ended up just rambling so long post ahead if you wanna read my ramble
oh oh okay in uncertain terms cause i want to let you experience the joy of working things out for yourself too
there’s something new to dq3 hd-2d remake i stumbled upon and was like what is that and how do i get it, it’s in a wall and i can interact with it feels like it’s teasing me like i can get it out somehow but i don’t know and was wondering.
then i found a location that isn’t tied to story progress and is entirely possible to miss as i did until i had ramia and was looking everywhere for anything i might’ve. there, something interesting was mentioned by name, why was it discussed in a flashback, it can’t be for nothing and it sounds like it could be that thing i saw in the wall.
and i was left wondering for a long time. then eventually i found a character with a ! above his head and he mentioned the thing and hinted at how one might get it out. but what with? and then it clicked.
and i went to a past location, the npc i was looking for had another ! above his head he gave me what i needed, i took it to the thing i saw in the wall and it worked, then i took it to the where it had been mentioned in a flashback and some dialogue later, a new helmet was forged and i even got an achievement.
additionally something had been concerning me, the npc that normally reforges the sword of kings had a ! above his head and mentioned something else that would stop him from that (which was a little annoying cause after the dialogue the ! disappeared and he only had the standard vendor dialogue and i forgot to use the new recall feature to save the initial dialogue). but after solving that other mystery, it clicked again and i knew where to find what he was looking for.
anyway, i’m so glad there are new mysteries to solve and the answers aren’t spoon fed to you. you have to talk to npcs, actually read the dialogue and do some thinking.
it’s something i really enjoyed about dq1 the first time, you’re just told to slay the dragonlord and have to work out everything by talking to every npc and putting the hints some of them give you together. it’s great, i don’t care that it’s really small and basic compared the every game after it.
i’m the bitch that, upon getting to a new location in a jrpg, goes around the town talking to every single npc and reading it all. sometimes there’s even a day/night cycle and different npcs are out at night or the same npcs have different things to say so i sometimes do it twice or like things are altered drastically after a certain even so i gotta do it again like in dq11, any locations that appear in act 1 and 2.
i really encourage you give it a try especially in dq cause there’s a lot of subtle word building in this easily overlooked text. it’s only when talking to serena and veronica’s parents in their house during the funeral that you’ll find out they’re not actually their birth parents but the twins were found under mysterious circumstances and adopted. plus sometimes there’s that thing where an npc mentions another and then many hours later you find the other npc and they mention the first and you remember and connect the dots.

Okay I really like the races of Dragon Quest X so I kinda wanna use them for the dragon quest themed ideas I've had bouncing around in my brain lately.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
that just feels like a nice fit >3> for dragon quest brain lol just add humans and some forest furries basically
just thinking of like a good World Map to use for it basically kinda tempted to just yoink the Unicorn Overlord map lol
Tumblr media
Humans are in the lush middle mostly, dwarves in the mountainous biome to the southeast, the south west is the lush forest furry joint, the Wetlings which are the Zora fish people basically would be aquatic based so they'd mostly have visitable colonies on the coasts, the separated off island in the west there is the elf land, and then probably the smol bullyable boys in the north because they're the only ones with natural fur
Tumblr media
there that's a representation of the Race line up I'm imagining lol humans, merpeople, elves, popplins, dwarves, and furries
Kinda liking how the world is settling into place in my imagination now
that map seems like it works a lot better than I even initially thought lol
Tumblr media
those little islandettes in the middle there are like the perfect "trading zone" midway point for an aquatic species to come up to the land to interact with the dryland folk, where their "actual" kingdom is entirely underwater.
that actually fucking works super good I'm happy with it >3>
in the game it's the world tree that makes the luminary and as I thought up before the species of furries would be foresty boys
could be there's a world tree that's like got the hollow earth on the inside, and that's where the preds all are uwu
it's hard to put the framework that has been crafted in my mind into words x3
cuz a lot of dragon quest games have like the realm of the specials basically x3 angels, really so that's what it'd be for the preds 👀 preds are in the tree and they had to send one of them out into the world because of hero reasons
Cuz the hero in DQ4 and 5 are descendants of angels And probably DQ6 too I dunno that game is weird DQ9 Hero is just straight up an angel And then DQ11 is the chosen tree boy So the idea I was having last night was foxeh eating his friend for the first time and everyone's like " =x well it's been a long time coming I guess. Coulda been worse! Go home and talk to your mom." And then revealing that they found him in a little basket Moses in the reeds style and along with him were two letters from his birth mother One of which was for whoever found him explaining he was a pred but pls be nice And the other one was for him explaining he's gotta go adventuring And also talking about the whole eating his friend thing and them not knowing what's gonna happen with that lol "well worst case scenario at least you two are gonna be together forever now, you were practically joined at the hip as it was anyway " Flashbacks to the townsfolk having passionate town hall debates about taking in a predator babe But after like a decade and a half including times where he fought off monster incursions they're all like eh he's cool it'll probably be fine lol "maybe he'll be a big bad pred but at least he's our pred"
Letters being like "I can't explain anything just trust me bro" lol
Having the preds being in the world tree, so the furry forest clans are closer to them for both good and for bad
Like the scary boogyman bedtime stories about preds stealing people away in the night originate from the forest furries xD And those got exchanged to others via visitors and traders and ect and that's how the limited awareness of preds got spread around Maybe there even being some lore about how it used to be preds snacking on preyboys in the forest was a mutual thing cuz balance of nature and all that, but over time things just started going bad maybe animosity started brewing maybe preds were overeating and throwing things outta wack, so they just dipped out into the tree Undertale style. The truth is shrouded in myth =o So the first time he'd run into forest furries they'd be like " O_o " moreso than any other culture lol
leaning mostly on the world and lore stuff from DQ4 and 5 tbh lol while using the plot of 11 xD

Howdy there! I'm a bit late to the party, by like, a few years by my estimate, but I'm absolutely in love with your Nine in DQ11 AU. I had a similar thought because DQ9 was the one other DQ game I've played. But yeah, I've been tearing through your AU, feeling a little betrayed that I'm just finding this now T_T. I'm not sure if you're still taking questions for this AU, but there's one thing I'm wondering that I'm pretty sure I haven't seen yet. Apologies if you've already answered this. What are Nine's general vibes with Serena, Erik, and Jade. Like what's their relationships and interactions like?
HELLO WELCOME!! YOU'RE NOT LATE THE TRAIN IS STILL RUNNING
I still have this AU in my heart, yes! I'm so glad you loved it!!!
It's an AU I always hold dear in the corner of my heart and if anyone leaves a like on my post I immidiately just leap up in joy. Just haven't been posting since life was really busy but it's still one of my favorite pastimes to just think about it for a while. Your ask filled me with pure joy! if you have any more questions or ideas or just random thoughts about the au, anything, just dump it on the ask and I'll be there with you in an instant. Feel absolutely free to barge in, I love getting asks. Thank you again.
Now, to your question!
Serena: They've got a lot of things in common: mainly, that they're the team gluttons. If left unsupervised they will drift to a bakery unprotected and return after spending half the team's budget. They're also both absentminded as all hell, so you can constantly see Veronica chiding the two of them at the same time- Nine and Serena side by side, slightly looking like soaking wet puppies. Like partner in crimes- but the crimes are just things like disappearing into the crowd and being lost, only to be found hours later, sharing a pastry, blissfully unaware how much the other party members were frantically looking for them in concern.
They're very good friends! She's the one who Nine makes the most casual conversation to, due to them having a lot of common interests- Nine's affinity to healing magic brings them together to discuss healing magic theory together, too. Nine enjoys braiding her hair if there's nothing to be done! Serena very, very much enjoys listening to his nighttime stories of stars and constellations.
Erik: If you leave them together, their bickering will NOT end. It's a constant stream of roasts and roasting back. Despite all this, it's all in good fun- in truth, Nine is very, very fond of Erik. Ever since Erik helped El bust out of the dungeons, Nine is always very thankful to him. He's also... aggressively protective of Erik, but does not seem to realize the fact himself. Their usual conversation is on the bickering side, but they're all good-natured and both know it. ("Nine, you know your plans make no sense." "Sure, mister 'I jumped off a cliff and would have died immediately if not for El's miracle powers', tell me your wisdom, then!')
Since Nine usually has his head above in his clouds- El's a bit too used to Nine's casual chaos- it's usually up to Erik to try and "save him from himself". "Nine, stop trying to eat that loaf whole. We have a bread knife. We're not savages." "Nine, for the love of- how did you burn the cooking pot down?? It's made of copper!!" Erik is also fond of Nine, but in the way of "Good God. My partner's brother needs a leash(affectionate)" kind of way.
In return, Nine cares a lot about Erik's wellbeing: he constantly asks Erik whether he ate anything, quietly mends his clothes, forcefully sits him down to check for his wounds and tends to them personally. As I mentioned, Nine almost gets aggressively protective of Erik from time to time- Erik notices this but does not mention it.
Jade: Jade views El as a brother: and the fact that Nine had dedicated his (jade's percieved sense of) entire life to keeping Eleven safe has won her respect. She doubts his motive at first, because she instantly recongized he was a man that was hiding a bit too much inside his seams- but the fact that Nine gets hurled off a cliff just to give them a time frame to escape erased her doubts right away. She does have her own blazing questions about Nine's true identity, but she decides to keep silent in the behalf of the respect she holds against him.
It's a relationship of solemn respect, at first, Jade respecting Nine as a protector and Nine viewing Jade as a lineage of royalty and treating her as such.... but it slowly melted into something much more friendlier over the time.
Jade does not speak of it, of course, but by the time act 1 is coming to a close she already came to a point where she considers him as her second younger brother. She (half jokingly) tries to appoint Nine to come be her royal knight beside Hendrik after she is crowned queen- Nine politely refuses.
(Nine still holds a bit of regret in the fact that he could not help any of the tragedies made in the day she lost the grip of the basket.)
Another tidbit is that albeit not daily like Hendrik and Nine, they spar quite regularly. Hendrick and Nine's sparring usually follows the same routine: Hendrik, with his physical wall of defence and his slow but devastating blows, tries to brute force his way through Nine's shield spells. Nine, with his floating movements, utilize his dexterity and small form to dodge his attacks and tries to find an opening. It's a calm conversation, almost, and since they both know each other's limit, they usuallt let go of their weapons when either of them looks drained and end the sparring in a peaceful handshake.
Jade and Nine's battle, however- not so much. Jade's blows are quick, very quick, and absolutely merciless. Since Nine's go-to battle strategy is to glance off attacks by dodging, parrying, and putting up shielding spells, this means Nine have to dodge a LOT. When they spar, it's a constant flurry of movement, sounds of split-second parrying, and the dust sifting around them as Jade metaphorically chases Nine around to land a strike: it's chaos. The only thing one would be able to make out of this mess is an occasional, frantic chant of SKARA! as the gold tint of Nine's shield spell surrounds himself, only to be deftly broken by Jade's roundhouse kick. Jade does not have mercy. To her it's either a win or a loss: Either Nine puts up a shield a second late and gets flung across the field like a rag doll by a kick, or Jade loses her balance for a split second after Nine's parry and gets a sword hilt smashed against her stomach.
Nine very much enjoys sparring against her! Erik is very concerned for his sanity.
That's what I can think of of the moment. I'll add more when I have more ideas, and if you want more details feel free to ask!!

nostalgia blinded catgirl rants about the new dragon quest monsters game
okay i'm dropping dqm dark prince and wanna give my thoughts on it. actually i NEED to give my thoughts on it, i am dying to scream about how much i loved and hated this game. so i'll be blunt, both joker and joker 2 are better than dark prince and it isn't close. the vibe of this game felt much closer to like.. the original monsters remakes on the 3ds than the ds games. the season changing gimmick is terrible. the story is terrible. the lategame dungeons are terrible. the vibes are just off for me idk. i guess i'm biased bc the whole thing of travelling to islands and sometimes finding random events in joker were so neat and i loved that little weirdo monster that you could fuse into all kinds of weird forms and in general the areas and story felt more thought out.. and the hub area was wayyyy better. god, and the characters. i seriously could not stand ANYONE in this game. solitaire bb i miss you xoxo. tournaments were ok, the announcers were fun. i do think dark prince had some positives, like the sweets based areas were really neat, it felt like i was in candyland and i loved it. and as usual the fusing is really fun, it's still the biggest hightlight to me! scouting monsters and fusing them and just discovering all kinds of new ones is a great time. what really drove me away though was i guess the atmosphere and the dungeons. seriously, the dungeons suck BAD. the upper echelon ones have you aimlessly running in circles pressing buttons and shit to alter the dungeon slightly and you have no idea how many times you need to press it and you just keep ending up in the same place and it's the least fun ever- ok god fuck this game actually LOL i had fun with the early - mid game a lot and just fusing monsters and stuff but uhhhh i do wish i just stopped playing after the "bad ending" bc honestly it's a great stopping point bc the game just gets worse from there from both a story and gameplay perspective. the game has some bad performance issues, visually looks way worse than dq11, and in general just feels kind of.. subpar. i feel like as i played i couldn't help but think "wow i wish i was playing monster joker rn" and.. yeah! maybe i'll just go find my old copy of it and play it instead! i don't normally rant like this on here yall know i'm usually only here to rt yuri but like. i HAD to talk about this somewhere. i have rlly mixed feelings on this game but i'm still glad i played it, there were parts i enjoyed for sure and above all else i had a great time fusing monsters! i just hope if they ever make another dqm game they just,, remake monsters joker 1. FAITHFULLY. VERY, VERY FAITHFULLY..... PLEASE. ok gn!

You guys have your own cliches when it comes to writing or creating?
Octopath 2 and DQ 11 have been rotating around in my brain a lot lately (DQ11 more due to how recently I got the game and completed it) and, of course, I like creating characters and the stories revolving around them.
But it's the first time I've acknowledged that I have my own cliches when it comes to creating.
Mine are to be as contrary as possible.
"You know how this thing is this way? What if it was NOT that!" "You know all the things associated with this? How bout NOT that!"
so on and so forth. S'like pulling an uno reverse card on a given concept.
One of the characters I made for my own little Octopath band is absolutely that to a T, and two characters i'm building for DQ are also taking on that contrary idea, with the story revolving around the idea that 'Destiny is a bit more fragile than you think' aka Destiny is a bit bullshit sometimes.
It's funny to me, and I'm fairly certain that the more characters I make for these respective worlds, the less contrary they get?
It's fun tho ^^

Hiya Bee, how have you been?
Sorry if this seems completely random. I was just wondering, as someone who knows nothing about Homestuck, how easy is it to match DQ11 characters to Homestuck classes? You mentioned in one of the tags being a bit iffy on Jade's, so I'm guessing the classes aren't a complete match to typical RPG ones?
*Entrapta voice* I've waited YEARS for someone to ask me about my theories!!!!! (also FLAXEN!!!<33 always a treat to see you in my inbox, I hope you've been well!)
Matching the characters to their classpects has been a hit or miss: some of them were SUPER easy (like Prince of Blood Jasper), others took awhile (Maid of Doom Hendrik), and others I'm still thinking of/am dubious about (Mage of Heart? Jade).
You would be correct about the classes not fully matching the typical RPG ones!! For slight context, Homestuck revolves around a world ending - universe creating video game in which players must rise through their ranks, reach their godtier (the classpect), and beat the final boss to get the ultimate prize (a new universe they'd be the gods of).
A classpect or Godtier is made up of a characters Class and their Aspect. A class is basically how the character would interact with/use their aspect- its divided between active and passive, which usually means if they can directly manipulate their aspect/use their aspect for themselves or if they are manipulated through their aspect/use their aspect for the team. Aspects are a little more difficult to explain on their own- their kinda like elements? Its what the character can manipulate/manipulate through. Like the aspect of Light usually revolves around things like knowledge, luck, and narrative relevancy.
Jasper, Hendrik, Sylv, and Veronica are all active classes! Veronica's class of Witch is one of the most active classes next to Lord, I believe. Serena and Erik are both passive classes! My thoughts on specifically why I gave out certain classpects are VERY long and deranged so if y'all wanna know more ask about a specific character lmao
But for a bit of specifically Jade: I just haven't found anything that clicks. I've been desperately cycling through classpects and I REALLY didn't want to repeat any more aspects (I've already made two Light and two Doom players augh.....) so that limits choices. I thought Heart since it revolves around the soul, emotions, and ones/others identities but hhhhhhhh none of the Heart classpects have felt fully right.

I think once I do Ys 8 I'm basically caught up, but first Dragon Quest 11 for a bit.
I played the demo on my computer a couple years ago and was really impressed. I spent at least a dozen hours on just the demo and still didn't run out of stuff to do, and I was enjoying the retro vibe in a more modern and polished package.
Then I decided to wait for it to go on sale at an arbitrary price I decided I was ok with. And then I kept waiting for multiple years because it just keeps never hitting that point on Steam.
I ended up actually paying slightly more than that for a used physical copy for the Switch instead, so good job Squenix, you got $0 out of that instead of like 10% less than what you would've if you'd dropped the price slightly more over time.
The problem with that is that now I have to redo all the stuff I did in the demo, and the beginning of the game is slooow. Painfully so. And on top of that the game is just painfully slow in general. It would be instantly improved by speeding up literally everything by 20%, even without redoing anything to fit the slightly faster pace.
The default camera speed takes a full five seconds to do a 360, and even at the max speed it takes at least like three. This is a recurring problem for me in a lot of Japanese games, and less often in games from other places (who tend to screw up their cameras in different ways). If the maximum speed isn't too fast for me to comfortably use your range of speed settings is too narrow.
Unsurprisingly to go along with that the walking speed is also really slow compared to what I'm used to. It has separate speeds for indoors and outdoors, and really the outdoor speed is how fast the indoor one should be while the indoor one should be reserved for stealth/sneaking sections (and those should stay in games I don't play because they're just not fun for me). It's especially painful coming directly from Ys 8, where the slowest walking speed is faster than the fastest one in DQ11, plus it has a run button to go faster, plus you can equip an accessory to turn it into a run even faster button.
There's a setting to change the combat speed, but really that wouldn't address most of my problems, and also it makes the animations look weird, which is a shame because there's a lot of excellent animation work in the game, like every different enemy has their own set of animations, and they're all extremely expressive and charming.
Unfortunately it tends to make you wait through the entire animation every time, including the full transition to their idle animation, when normally most games would move the camera or start accepting input again somewhere in the middle of that process. Also if there's a musical jingle that plays for any reason (e.g. winning a battle, leveling up, a new party member joining, saving your game) you have to let the whole thing finish playing before you can do anything (and anything includes mashing buttons to skip through stuff you've already seen dozens of times), which is also an extremely long delay compared to what most games do.
I swear if the camera and run speed were more reasonable and all the little things that make you wait around extra time doing nothing were tweaked a bit the game would instantly go from 100 hours to 60-70 and feel much better too.
Also while we're at it can we get some menus that suck less, especially the terrible inventory? I know a lot of the weird quirks in the game are things that were inherited from the older ones, but sometimes you just need to change them to make them actually functional, and you can reference the old ones with visual design or something.
It's a great game in a lot of ways, but it sure does manage to suck in others at the same time. I wish I'd just paid the extra five bucks and finished the game in 2021, because redoing all this stuff at the beginning is painful.

Hi Penny really been enjoying your dive into Dragon Quest VII! Been curious, what made u decide on playing the PS2 version over the 3DS version of the game?
(gonna assume you meant DQ VIII and answer for that!) A few things! Obviously the 3DS version was tempting with the extra content and all that (especially knowing now that one of the added party members is Red UGHHGHHGHGHGHGHGGHGG god i wish) but the PS2 version, in turn, has
an orchestrated soundtrack (VERY IMPORTANT, Strange World does NOT hit the same through MIDI)
better visuals! i like the color palette of the PS2 visuals a lot better, and there's a lot more detail in the environment that brings things together nicely.
randomized battles, which is obviously gonna be different for a lot of people and a lot of situations in terms of whether it's considered a pro or a con. normally, i don't prefer random encounters BUT in my experience with DQ11 i found that when I had the option of skipping combat encounters I really would not level up as much as I should have before hitting a roadblock and needing to grind for at least a couple of hours. so far, though there has been a LITTLE grinding, being forced to engage with the combat system in the overworld while exploring and get a consistent flow of XP has really helped pace my playthrough a lot better!
Not to mention, at the time of choosing which platform to play on, I did not have any capture solution for 3DS fully setup and I was really resistant to the idea of emulating since I prefer playing on original hardware when I can help it. I've since settled on the fact that until I can get my hands on a hardware capture mod, emulation is gonna be the way to go for any 3DS/DS streaming I do. And I've got a setup that I think looks nice and runs well now but, again, at the time I did not.
Honestly though the BIGGEST reason, even after considering all of this stuff, is that when I think of Dragon Quest I think "large, cozy adventure". It has real nostalgic vibes even though I didn't grow up with the series. A perfect cozy-up-with-tea-before-bed kind of series. And I'm not sure if any game system complements those vibes better to me than the PS2 does. The PS2 has this pitch-perfect nostalgia factor in nearly everything about the way it runs, the way it renders visuals, and thankfully a lot of those things are in tact even when running on a backwards compatible PS3. And it does that without losing the inherent feeling of scale you get when playing a console game on a TV compared to a handheld game on a small screen. That perfect balance of comfort vs. scale is the biggest reason why I chose the PS2 version, and so far I do NOT regret the decision.

ok im making non-splatoon (i play that for at least 5hrs a week) gaming to do list so i get my priorities in order
tell me if i should add or remove a thing
also i might stream all of this it depends on if my laptop can handle it
these are all games i've started that hopefully i can marathon finish between 1/31 and 2/17 while i'm working less (order subject to change depending on how im feeling but EotE and spiritfarer are the most important to me rn)
outer wilds EotE
spiritfarer
inscryption
stray
harvestella
hollow knight
psychonauts
mhs2
then after that im gonna tackle my queue in roughly this order with dates of when i Hope to have them done
psychonauts 2 (this is highly subject to change depending on how much i loved the first one and if i want to immediately play the sequel or take a break) (2/28)
bugsnax (technically started this game a really long time ago but never finished it due to circumstances) (3/14)
disco elysium (ngl i will probably play this on and off for a really long time)
celeste (3/31)
ultrakill (4/14)
cult of the lamb (5/1)
botw replay in preparation of totk (subject to change depending on how im feeling because botw is really long lol) (5/12)
tears of the kingdom (who fucking knows)
hylics + hylics 2 (it will be summer so Gaming more) (6/7)
aa trilogy (this one will also probably be on and off for a long time)
HL + HL2 (no i have for real never played them) (7/1)
sonic frontiers (7/14)
slime rancher 2 (i might play this one earlier because i really want to play it but it's low priority bc it's still early access, so waiting is a win-win)
at this point i will most likely be back in school so it's yet to be seen how my Gaming time shakes out, i might just fully prioritize splatoon 3 with my likely limited time. i also plan on finishing luigi's mansion 3, crash team racing's campaign, chocobo mystery dungeon every buddy, & hades' true ending at some point. other games i really want to play are noita and carrion, i also want to fit in a dq11 replay but it's extremely low priority. on top of that i want to play some 3ds era zelda and kirby games, but again, theyre low priority.
this list is just kinda a rough idea for me to conceptualize my 2023 Gaming Timeline and so the 0 other people who care have a rough idea of what i'll be playing and when
