The door to Will's hospital room opens. Steve assumes the sweet, woody scent that brushes against his instincts is Mrs Byers. His instincts recognize it from her house, after all, barely noticable beneath the smell of blood and gasoline. When he looks up, though, he sees Jonathan. More questions add themselves to the long list the night has asked. Unlike the ones that have turned his world upside down, however, these ones might have answers.

Back in middle school, Jonathan lost the delicate, milky scent of an underage omega. It wasn't uncommon, young alphas and omegas occasionally presented as betas when they came of age, so no one thought much of it. The fact Jonathan was at least a year too young to present was much better gossip, anyway.
