Kabrus relationship to masculinity too is a foil to Laios'
he cant access it the way he wants because of the way it makes him seem to be a threat, and he actively tamps down his masculinity. he wants in and cant get in bc being masculine means Being A Threat. he is a kind, compassionate, and real sweetie kind of person, and he is also masculine, but he cannot thread that needle for others. when he is allowed to just be himself, he takes up a lot of space, walks with a determined swagger, uses ore as a personal pronoun and he is caring and kind and goes out of his way to help others (i love him so much.)
laios tries hard to fit into masculine institutions and finds herself rejected constantly bc she cannot perform it--with a heavy implication that its an unwillingness to commit violence that bars her from being A Real Man. we see her threatened with violence by men (the panel with laios being held up by a bigger man with falin rushing in with a mace and kabru watching sticks with, as does the panel with the winged lion showing laios her worst trauma) but only retaliating against toshiro (and i must say. that fight was sooooooooo fucking grade school babies tousling) and even then when she initiates that fight its with an open palmed slap after already having conceded and conceded with a sword to her throat. when left to her own devices she walks swishy and giggles and projects the body language of an excited teenage girl (its. so cute) and is also loud and abrasive and takes up space.
