im always curious about how much ive improved when i come across my old art from when i was a teenager still learning-and im still learning as an adult but-yeah, i'd say ive improved in alot of areas, becuase hey look i can draw the other eye now :D

HEY guess who's being completely normal about episode 7 :)

anyway it sure ain't me, so I made myself a baby Malleus! I used the single-headed version of Choly Knight's hydra pattern (link will be in replies ↓↓↓) as a base, and just messed with some of the pieces to make him more Mall-y. including sewing all those little claw pieces, then pinning them on and realizing I actually liked him better without them...oh well. to heck with accuracy, I want stubby little dragon legs!

unfortunately, he doesn't photograph very well, especially his forehead scales (they're there! I promise!) (they're made of glitter HTV so they are actually SPARKLY in real life, yet apparently they come out completely invisible in photos, woe). but he is super cuddly and soft so I'm happy with him! just as in canon, he is a product of LOVE. :>

SKILL UNLOCKED, KNITTING ABILITY LEVELED UP

So I've been knitting a fair bit as of late, all sorts of shenanigans and funky little things and a thousand fancy plans. Only some stuff finished thus far, but a fair bit of learning new building blocks going on.

And in a fit of pique while trying to get some ridiculously tiny dense pointy picots out of a purlwise cable cast on base, being mad that my normal purling (wrapping the yarn counter-clockwise) made the yarn have to cross SO FAR to get back up to the needle, I just...crossed the yarn up clockwise instead, and it was so much better. Distracted from the picot situation by how well it worked, I wondered why it's not the norm, did a quick search, and...

Found I had accidentally stumbled upon combination knitting? Which (for flat stockinette and the like) involves purling clockwise, and then knitting through the back loop to untwist those stitches. And it has FIXED my purl tension! The left side of my flat stockinette no longer gains a giant, sad loop! (Hell, I think that selvedge might even be neater than the right side now.) And I still don't necessarily like knitting ribbing, or how it looks vs. other, funkier options. But a quick test of normal vs. combination ribs side-by-side? Hot damn, that combo rib looks GOOD.

...Now, to get back to seeing if I can wrangle those picots to do what I want, without resorting to smaller needles...

being a line cook is insane but people do it anyway

do you want to know the secret to why line cooks stay line cooks?

We're addicted to a certain aspect of the job. A sort of combination of Pride and Power.

See, most of what is going on in that restaurant comes down to you. If the restaurant was a dairy, you'd be the cow, everything is based on what you produce; how much, how fast, and of what quality.

And it's INSANELY hard for most people to do. It requires you to keep mental track of tons of stuff while doing complicated physical creation in a dangerous environment under intense pressure

Any line cooks reading this? let me recreate a moment most of us have had many many times

For the rest of you this will be a nice window into the line cook experience

you have a rail FULL of tickets, and the printer will NOT stop printing more.

You've got a stove FULL of stuff you're cooking, and half of it is for stuff you don't even have a ticket for, because of something on a table that already went out was wrong or missing, or a server forgot to put something on a ticket and needs it in a hurry, or...

the tickets you are working on are for tables that finished their appetizers 45 minutes ago, and it could be an hour before you even get a chance to read whatever the printer is currently printing.

You have a head FULL of stuff you're tracking: how quickly the sauce is thickening in this pan, whether the garlic is about to burn in that pan, how long before you drain the pasta in that pot before it over cooks. As soon as the thing in the oven for table 31 is 5 minutes from done you gotta put the other thing on the flat top to go with it, you're putting together Something on your board and you can't finish it because you need a refill of an ingredient from the walk-in but you can't go get it because if you leave the kitchen you'll burn the thing in the salamander. And you can't plate the thing in salamander yet because the Something you're putting together on your board is taking up all the room you had left in this disaster of a kitchen

Three people have just told you complicated changes to dishes you have to organize and keep in your head. Something like

"24 needs 3 gnocchi not 4, and 2 with no rosemary; 3 needs all 4 gnocchi to have extra rosemary, 2 with no garnish; 22 needs an extra gnocchi extra garnish no rosemary, salads are almost out you can go in 3 or 4 minutes"

The manager, assistant manager, about 8 servers, and a fuckton of people at tables are all waiting on YOU with an impatience bordering on fury.

right? sound familiar? okay that's not the moment, that's just the dinner rush on a night somewhere between bad and average.

The moment happens when, during this insanity, you reach an internal place where you become completely overwhelmed. Panic and frustration and over stimulus all rise up and wipe your brain completely clean. You can't think, you have no idea what to do, you want to run away, you want to quit, you can barely think of your own name, everything feels completely impossible.

And then. The Moment

You pull it back together.

You stop being overwhelmed, you stop panicking, you insist that it IS possible, and that you are going to do it. You decide what has to happen and you start. You clear all the clutter you can from your kitchen. You pull all your tickets as far down the rail as possible and scan through the tickets on the printer so you have an idea of how things are going to go. You write down a couple of times on tickets that you would usually keep in your head but you need the brain space. You group the tickets according to not only time but what dishes they have in common so you can do batches of things. You decide if you can just get these two things out of your way you'll be in a much better position and so you concentrate on getting those two things cooked and plated. You beg the dishwasher to grab you the thing you need from the walk-in. You call your assistant manager or manager into the kitchen and you tell them you need them to start you 8 gnocchis: 3 no rosemary one extra garnish, 4 extra rosemary two no garnish, and one normal.

Right? Okay so first of all, as you can see... The job is INSANE

and second of all. Not everybody is capable of that Moment. The moment you stare already-existing catastrophic failure in the face and tell it No. That moment.

and you have to be capable of that moment if you want to be a line cook.

Which means pretty close to zero other people in that restaurant can do what you can do.

So now let me tell you a story.

I was 19 years old. I was a line cook at an italian joint. We're slammed off our ass one night, and the manager is in the little galley kitchen with me, and he's just standing there because he isn't good enough to not be in the way if he tries to help

and he's over my should about everything, telling me to drain that more or turn the heat down on this etc.

Finally, I stop completely, look him dead in the eye, and say "Tony, i'm not cooking another thing until you leave this kitchen."

I'm 19. Ive worked here six months. Tony is twice my age and married to the owner's daughter. There is a heavy pause.

Then Tony turns around and walks out of the kitchen.

What's he going to do, send me home? Zero other people in this restaurant can do the thing that makes it a restaurant. If i go home the customers are going home too.

And that's the real reason most line cooks stay line cooks even though the job feels like a war you never win.

It's that interplay of Pride and Power. For those few hours, the restaurant is happening because of you.

That's the power.

For the other part, try pulling a cook off the line during the rush. You can't. Even if they are in the weeds. Maybe even especially if they are in the weeds.

Once i was working with a cook who, in the middle of the dinner rush, sliced is hand open - a cut both deep and wide, pouring blood. No bandage we had was going to be a solution for it.

So he popped a latex glove on that hand, triple wrapped a rubber band around his wrist to keep the blood in, washed with soap, and went right back to cooking.

Because it was the dinner rush and no one else could do the job, and he wasn't coming off that line.

30 minutes in he had to swap gloves because it had filled with blood like a water balloon and was making it hard to cook. Leaving the line was never even a question.

Hi hello! I have not finished a cross stitch in three years! 2024 is starting off very weird, I literally got this idea in my head two days ago. Made a pattern by eyeballing a screenshot, picked my colors, and 7 hours later I have a Starlo. My desk now has 100% more yeehaw on it.

I first learned about Undertale Yellow just a week ago, but I was so blown away by the characters! I like Starlo a lot, like him enough that he SHATTERED my hiatus like glass, something I didn’t think I’d ever see happen again.

I stitched him on 18ct aida because I can’t do over one on 28ct anymore, my eyes are fucked up. Also “red clashes with my colors” my ass, he looks great in this red frame I had lying around.

It’s so strange, something felt right the whole time I worked on him, and now it feels wrong that I’m not working on anything else yet. I’m not promising a renaissance, but given my circumstances, there’s a nonzero chance that I’ll be back to my needle on the regular after THREE YEARS of trying and failing to start or finish anything.

Merry Leap Yeap, let’s see what else 2024 has for me 👀

ARC-V Dubbed Episode 1... “Uncut”?! (Re-Edited 4K Dub/Japanese OST)

Swing Into Action/”A Trail of Light -- The Pendulum Summon″ [WIP #1 | WIP #2 | WIP #3 | Release WIP #4 (New!)]

Ladies and gentlemen! (And everyone in between, of course)

Finally time to get this edit off my project backburner, haha. After plugging away at this for more than a year--or I may have actually started this a little in 2022 at some point, but due to my SSD dying on me in October of that year, I pretty much lost everything and eventually had to restart this--my "dub-uncut" take on ARC-V episode 1's dub is all done! As when I worked on those 5D's "dub-uncut" episodes, I find that there's some potential in the 4K/KCM dubs, but overall it's hampered by the dub's music [which especially hurts for ARC-V given the awesome Japanese score by Kotaro Nakagawa], some writing/voice-direction choices, and other little oddities/cuts; like with that mini-project, the goal of this, as a successor to the dub-with-JP-OST take on episode 10's first 10-or-so minutes I worked on years back which served as the project's catalyst (now with better voice-isolating tech available), is to re-score the dub with the Japanese soundtrack, while also modifying the dialogue in spots to be closer to the Japanese dialogue (using either dialogue from other episodes or Duel Links/Cross Duel voicelines as needed) while editing it to the Japanese footage.

I'd been chipping away at this mostly for the past year, but worked a bit more on finalizing it and leveling the audio over the past few months to get it off the backburner, lol, along with revamping my subs for BelieveXBelieve and One Step (the former including a revamped edit of Sawatari's cards being hidden [as V1 of this OP with that was never released textless officially] and reprising my edit during the chorus to translate "KABA CARNIVAL" sliding in under the Hippo Tokens to "HIPPO CARNIVAL"; both also use the singable translations I worked on years back, though One Step's is shortened in spots). I also looked into commissioning a voiceover artist to provide voiceovers for the undubbed pre-OP prologues throughout ARC-V, and I'm very happy with the results provided by mattsindt over on Fiverr! 😄

As for the episode itself, overall they did a good job sticking to the original dialogue, so my edits were more to bring them in line with the original dialogue in those spots where they weren't. Gong[enzaka] gets his early line modified to include the names of the Monsters he's tributing; I removed Yuzu's "what do you have to say for yourself"/"figures" pre-OP; Yuya's "boulder" crack at Gong was removed; Nico gets his "as in free" line edited slightly to fit that part over the hand motion he does that was cut; I did have to slightly recycle some of Yusho's dialogue in the flashback because it was shortened some in the dub; I kept Yuya quiet as Sledgehammer [Ishijima] reacts to seeing him in the clown getup; I grabbed some Nico lines from the Maiami Championship arc to remove the added computer voice as the Action Cards get dispersed after the eyecatch; added in a missing "Ladies and gentlemen!" for Yuya as he swings towards making his first move; Yoko's lines during the Yuya flashbacks were swapped a bit since the dub swapped the scenes; I stitched together a "I tribute Hip Hippo to Tribute-Summon" line before Yuya summons Odd-Eyes Dragon, timing his hype line for it closer to JP Yuya's line; due to the aforementioned Yusho-flashback trimming, I had to get a little creative with his lines in the pre-Pendulum scene as Yuya remembers his words; I stitched together a full line about Yuya using the Magicians to set the Pendulum Scale to remove the "I'm taking control" bit; I added his "Pendulum Summon!" shout from episode 6 and shortened his "My Monsters [are ready to] swing into action!"; during the preview, I used lines from ep. 2 [or DL] that were similar to the JP dialogue, using a recycled "How'd he do that?" from ep 1 for Yuzu where it came up; and other little things here/there. Oh, and also, I've replaced and will be replacing every mention of "Zuzu" back to "Yuzu." 💁🏽‍♂️ (Still A Choice to change her name for a reference five people would get...) I might also be doing the same with mentions of "LID" to "LDS" depending on what audio works, to be consistent with the visuals [and later "Lancer Defense Soldiers"], while still keeping "Leo Institute" as an alternate name for it. (There will likely be some scenes that'll be in Japanese with hardsubs as 4K cut them, as opposed to trimming; Sora's Synchro-explanation scene in 10 or 11 comes to mind; we'll see what audio's available to make something work. Also, if Ishijima ever comes to Duel Links, I'll revise this to add in some "My turn! Draw!" lines lol.)

And speaking of visuals, I've also applied a few visual translation edits to help enhance the "what if dubbed straighter" feel to this; I translated the destination sign on the bus early in the episode, the Yusho poster at You Show, the Fan Appreciation Day poster that Nico shows to Yuya/co--a leftover from when I planned to sub ARC-V like I do my GX subs, before Crunchyroll took the wheel, though I had to revamp it (thankfully had it posted here so it survived my drive failure) and newly do the Yuya/"Special Match" closeup--and the sign on the building behind Yuya as he's crying during his flashback. I thought of resuming my attempt to translate the billboards during the early panning shot of the downtown area, but I couldn't find good enough reference shots for some of the further away/smaller ones (saves me some madness in the end, no doubt); I'll be translating stuff as feasible in future episodes, like location references in establishing shots/etc.

Footage-wise, I also chose to work off the DVD video I've had for years (with encodes for episodes 1-4 provided by GX_ST), largely because they have touchups done to the art/animation after the episodes' airings on TV that aren't used in the Crunchyroll or Amazon TV masters that make up the 1080p downloads available. (I do think the dub itself works off the DVD masters overall, and I may see if it's feasible to try and splice that footage as needed with the 1080p downloads, since the DVD masters are unfortunately not at their total best [how do you have a show airing in HD but release 480p DVDs and not BluRays guys pls save us Discotek].) I'd love to see proper/touched-up DVD rips made of ARC-V sometime, but as it is, none are available (not even from Astral_Union or NW-Sartiend who did rips for GX/ZEXAL and 5D's).

So, as with the 5D's project, I'll be releasing these over on NeoArkCradle (where I also post my GX work), as both an .mkv with the original video and a hardsubbed .avi with the visual edits, and I'll be making a Masterpost to compile the hardsub/visually-edited streaming links. The .mkv files will be dual-audio with this and the Japanese audio, with subs for the full JP audio (sourced from Crunchyroll with edits by me, as credited at the start), Signs/Lyrics per the dub audio, and Signs/Lyrics per the JP audio (It is funny how I didn't plan to sub ARC-V given CR being on it, but in revising their subs for this, I still made more than a few edits to effectively make it my own take, so I guess I am kinda 🙃 [how is their sub timing so bad])

Aaanywho, with all that establishing info out of the way, hopefully this came out nicely! Am definitely planning to work on more episodes, so stay tuned as I get those started. The fun's just swinging into action!

i got my stitches out today, which means im no longer wearing a bulky bandage on my right hand, which means i can confess to the dumbest thing i did while i was trapped in it. which was to put it into a pot glove and confidently open the open to retrieve something only my hand was too bulky from the bandage so the pot glove popped right off and flew up and landed in the bottom of the oven. where it promptly erupted into flames

2 memories i feel like sharing, & some backstory context: so my ass has been spayed, and healthy people take 6-8 weeks to fully recover from getting spayed. i, chronically ill, took longer. as with any abdominal surgery, they told me "no lifting over 10lb u could tear ur stitches." and for reference, my cats are 12 lb wonders.

so im chilling in bed. ~4 weeks after surgery. and my mother starts SCREAMING my name. like "OH MY GOD BORB COME IN HERE NOW QUICK QUICK HURRY OH GOD." so i do, albeit slowly because, you know, still recovering from major surgery. she's freaking out about one of my cats, who looks entirely normal. oh but he ~suddenly stopped~ and ~twisted his body~ i don't know if he's going to be ok. one mother panic attack and one emergency vet visit later (with my mother's help bc i couldn't lift my cat due to lifting restrictions) : he had flea dirt on his hind legs. he was twisting around to lick around his arse. cool 👍 (ofc my mother, on the ride back from the vet, tried to tell me NOT to give the kids flea meds, she doesn't know what kind of ~health ramifications~ flea meds can have if *gasp* the kids don't actually have fleas)

around the same time period, i get woken up by my mother screaming "HELP HELP HELP!!" the first day it happens, she stops within ~15 seconds, and i hear my parents talking before i fall back asleep. find out later the mechanism for moving the window panels up & down in the bathroom broke, so the top panel had trapped her fingers a la guillotine style. my parents joke "well borb if you hear your mother screaming... her fingers are probably trapped 😂." can you guess what happens next. my father was gone the next day, and guess who got her fingers trapped AGAIN by the bathroom window. so i get woken up by her screaming, and i have to help dislodge the window around her bare naked ass. and sure, i have sympathy because i bet it was really painful. but like. are you fucking stupid. my father had to literally childproof the window by installing a screw so the guillotine panel would catch against the other panel so fingers wouldn't get trapped. just so my mother wouldn't get her fingers trapped again. we all knew that if it wasn't there, she would 1000% get her fingers trapped again. but *im* supposedly the incompetent fuck up that NEEDS to be told exactly what to do just in case i, idk, have an independent thought.
