I want mlm RPG game isekai, please 😫
I once again tried to look for isekai with queer protagonist that is not written as BL (don’t take me wrong, I like BL, but what I am looking for is not BL isekai, but rather isekai that has queer male protagonist, because if you google “BL isekai” the results you get are mostly “porn without plot”, while I’m looking for a lot of plot instead - I don’t care how many sex scenes is there as long as there is plot that isn’t short and is intriguing so I can enjoy both the story and the romance that is going on, but sadly “BL isekai” is mostly not that) and like usual I found nothing, because apparently nobody came up with the idea that having a gay protagonist transported into isekai world in which he is surrounded by beautiful women, but has literally 0 interest in any of them and falls in love with that one guy he meets, is a great setting for a comedy. [EDIT: 14.10.2023 Why nobody told me about Kyo Kara Maoh? This is literally a mlm isekai that I looked for!]
Anyway, failing in finding male x male themed isekai that has romance as part of the story instead of the focus of the story, once again made me realize how much more interesting Raising of the Shield Hero would be if Naofumi and L’Arc were the endgame ship. Typical isekai RPG story with side romance that also falls into the drama territory due to the fact that L’Arc and Naofumi are technically enemies due to the fact that their worlds are currently fighting for survival with each other. Isn’t it thrilling when your love has obstacles similar to Romeo and Juliet story? That your love is forbidden or impossible, but you still end up having it in the end, because we are positive and don't want them all to die for the sake of their love, because hell they have to survive to save the world. Also harem just simply doesn’t fit this story.
Anyway, there is also an isekai manga that I was reading Ansatsusha de Aru Ore no Status ga Yuusha yori mo Akiraka ni Tsuyoi nodaga (My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds the Hero's), and tbh this manga would also greatly benefit from mlm romance, because as far as I noticed the protagonist is treated very well by the Hero in this story, to the point that I got some fruity vibes from the Hero in regard to his Assassin classmate (the MC). Due to the setting in which the MC discovers that the Kingdom that summoned them is not to be trusted and gets driven out by the Royals, the love story between Hero and the Assassin would really complete the picture. Hell, Akira could date both the Hero and Amelia (elven girl he meets) as far as I am concerned. Polyamorous bisexual isekai, let’s go!

(I dunno how you, but this is either very good friendship or gayness).

This manga had depth of a level I have not experienced in the isekai genre and I. Am. Obsessed. You're thrown right into the action as a Japanese high school class is suddenly transported to a fantasy world where a king asks the students for help defeating an invading demonic force. They have all gained the video game-like stats menu that other citizens of the fantasy world have, and compared to regular people they have incredible skills. But no one's skills come close to Akira's. He uses his stealth as an assassin to hide his true strength and tries to figure out what's really going on, because he senses all is not as it seems. The characters in this manga really had an impact on me. The art is so beautiful and detailed, and everyone has a distinct personality. I loved seeing Akira take on his role as the underdog with a secret weapon so effectively. The plot hooked me from the beginning. There's political intrigue, secret magic, hidden agendas, and plenty of mysteries to unravel. I hope this will be longer than four volumes. I couldn't predict what would happen next and I am craving more!

My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds the Hero's
by Matsuri Akai, Illustrations by Tozai
Volume 01
Story  ★★★☆☆ || ★★★☆☆   Art
Summary
Oda Akira is the kind of guy who people forget is even there. His unassuming nature pays off, though, when his entire class is swept away to a fantasy world, and he slips easily into his new role as a silent assassin. Between his suspiciously high starting stats and too many details that don’t fit, Akira is sure something is wrong. But digging into royal secrets is a dangerous game, and when Akira uncovers an evil scheme, he also makes a powerful enemy—the very king who brought him to this world! With the help of the elven spirit medium Amelia, can he find the power to set things right, and get his revenge?
Review
I tried this light novel because the idea of an entire class of kids being isekai-ed and that the assassin might be the true ‘hero’ and/or that the hero might be a red herring sounded like a fun concept. The first couple of chapters were okay as setup. It wastes no time dropping the kids in the new world and assigning magical attributes that typically match their natural talents and strengths. Akira, a loner who typically goes ignored by others, which makes him a natural fit for the assassin class. Unlike his classmates, he questions the motives and facts being fed to them.
Naturally, things are not as they seem and the plot gets a lot more interesting, with Akira being singled out by the Captain of the Guards, only for him to then be murdered and the blame put onto Akira himself as he is forced to go on the run. We also get a few other point of views, the hero, and one of Akira’s few ‘friends’ to name a couple, as they and a few others learn that some of the people who summoned them are not to be fully trusted. The overall initial mystery setup of what might be happening and getting a few more of Akira’s peers involved in the story was interesting and makes you wonder what exactly is going on in this magical world and the royal family.
Unfortunately it falls apart, for me at least, after Akira is on the run and meets an elven princess named Amelia.  I don’t know, perhaps it was just too typical a setup where our protagonist meets an insanely hot elven princess who immediately falls in love with him... and even though he is a ‘loner’ with poor social skills and comfort, it doesn’t take him long to devote himself to take care of her always and forever.  Her back story was also rather slapped together and seemed rather harsh (evil magic sister) and quickly resolved without much effort, at least for now.  It just felt OOC for him from his earlier stated personality and history.
I don’t know, the entire time they are together just killed most of my interest.  Perhaps I didn’t fully understand the genre I was expecting and that skewed by expectations. I was hoping that this one would break from the ‘formula’ and be a little more interesting. Nothing wrong with a harem building OP fantasy, but I’m just not as interested in them unless they offer something else to ‘hook’ me.
Nothing wrong with this book, just not to my personal taste (at least by the end of book 1). Perhaps I will give this one more volume and see if it develops in a way that appeals to me. The story line with the other students or the truth behind their summoning might develop into something interesting. Is it worth reading more? If I have read this series wrong, let me know, I’m open to a good story!

My status as an assassin obviously exceeds the hero's is a light novel / manga that follows a character named Akira who almost looks like this Akira but in a Fate-esque setting. I am not even joking.

Tonight's stream (and the next few streams) also featured a pile of hubris: the books holding up my lap desk! (It's the only thing with the cooking pad until I get one for my desk.). If I put it on it's little legs, it was way too tall, so I just stacked books under it and hoped Sushi would play nice
It was being held up by 4 volumes of My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds the Hero's, the DSM-5-TR, an AKC dog breed book, and a fuckin dictionary from...1997.

Isekai Manga
(An overview of the genre, with a few manga recommendations sprinkled throughout)
Ok, let’s talk about isekais.
You probably know the term by now; it’s been thrown around a bunch in the anime community, especially with the Shield Hero’s huge burst in popularity (proud to say that I followed the manga way before the anime released).
What Does It Mean?
Simply put, “isekai” is a shortened version of the Japanese word for “another world”. Usual characteristics of isekais include the main character getting transported to a different world, whether by being summoned as “the chosen one”, or dying and being reincarnated.
There’s been a sudden increase of interest in the genre of isekai recently, so Japan, along with China and Korea, is serializing manga/manhwa/manhua like crazy. Of course, there’s a marketing aspect involved too, which usually just makes it clear that certain aspects of the story (*cough* or all, if you’re talking about “In Another World With My Smartphone”) are specifically catered to the interests/fetishes of the masses.
That means nowadays most (Shounen) isekai stories usually include:
- Catgirls
- Harems
- OP protagonist
- Hot girl sidekick of the protagonist
- Girl who is amazed by OPness of the protagonist, but stays for his “personality”
- Romance, but not really (as in it reads like it’s written by a 4-year-old who knows exactly 3 copy-and-paste anime girl tropes)
-Used to be useless protagonist (jobless, otaku) becomes “the chosen one” and is summoned/reincarnated into a different world where he is the most powerful/smart
Honestly, some are cliche but entertaining somehow nonetheless (Shikkaku Mon no Saikyou Kenja (very, very OP and cliche), and Tenseishichatta yo (focuses more on family; better characters and plot than Saikyou))
Quick Recommendation Overview of Shounen Isekais:
(most of these are pretty unique, for isekais)
- Isekai Yakkyoku (A doctor gets reincarnated and uses his medical knowledge to help the world he reincarnates into, slowly becoming a renowned physician.)
- Tenseishichatta yo (Iya, Gomen) (Pretty textbook isekai, except the boy who reincarnates had a bad relationship with his family, and gets a great family in his second life, which is rather sweet)
- Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi (Guy basically roams around the world freely with an OP wolf-friend, an adorable slime companion, and cooking skill. Chill, laid-back manga)
- Isekai Yururi Kikou: Raising Children While Being an Adventurer (Exactly what it sounds like; MC spawns in a new world, sees children, Dad instincts kick in, and they’re traveling and hunting together. Pure, wholesome, family manga.)
- Saikyou Juzoku Tensei: Cheat Majutsushi no Slow Life (Eh, if you’re bored, it’ll do; no interesting plot to really speak of)
- Moto Sekai Ichi’i Subchara Ikusei Nikki: Hai Player, Isekai wo Kouryakuchuu! (Pretty standard isekai, but it’s entertaining, and there aren’t enough chapters to judge the plot yet since it’s relatively new. MC commits suicide and is reincarnated as one of his sub characters in a game he played before death.)
- My Status as An Assassin Obviously Exceeds The Brave’s (OP, calculating MC with the assassin title; relatively new, but has a lot of potential)
- The World’s Best Assasin, Reincarnated (Exactly what it sounds like. Cold MC, scanlation’s on the 2nd chapter, so it’s much too early to judge anything, but yunno, assassins)
- Isekai Shokudou (a seinen; very relaxing, uplifting manga about a magical cafe that opens its doors to another world every Saturday, focusing on the way food is a part of culture, life, and how it can bring great happiness)
(Not an Isekai, but if you like Isekais, you’ll probably like Solo Leveling. Legitimately the best manhwa I’ve ever read. Incredible story, amazing fight scenes, art is <3, and character development is through the roof.)
...
Of course, I’m not only coming after the Shounen Isekais. There are shoujo isekais as well, and just like the shounen ones, there are godly ones that leave you hanging on every word, and there are... not as good ones.
One main shoujo isekai trope that’s been really standing out recently is a trope featuring the main female protagonist being reincarnated into the world of an “otome game”, or a dating simulation for girls, but as the villain, or a mob character. Alternate tropes include being reincarnated into a novel’s world, etc.
The main focus is that the MC knows what is going to happen (often a “bad ending” for the character they’ve reincarnated to), and the story is the development of how they try to avoid their bad end. (Most feature romance) Some are a bit cheap, with their MCs being bland Mary-Sues, but others really dive into the fantasy world, often featuring a sharp, witty protagonist. I’ll recommend both though, as they are all quite enjoyable.
Shoujo Isekai Manga Recommendation Overview:
Manga with the above-mentioned trope will be marked with a !
- ! Otome Game no Hametsu Flag Shika Nai Akuyaku Reijou ni Tensei Shite Shimatta... (The OG of the Otome Game trope: Bakarina. Although it’s the OG, it’s not the best in its trope. Still worth a read; not much re-read value though)
- ! I’m a Villainous Daughter, so I’m Going to Keep the Last Boss (Unlike Bakarina, you feel a lot more pity for this protag; nicely written MC and stoic but softy on the inside love interest (who, as the title implies) is the Demon King)
- ! The Villainess is Adored by the Crown Prince of the Neighboring Kingdom
- ! I Swear I won’t Bother You Again! (Technically not a reincarnation, as Violette, the MC, gets rewound in time by one year, and this time, swears to not make the same mistakes again)
- ! Of Course, I’ll Claim Palimony! (Smart MC; relatively new)
- ! The Banished Villainess! Living the Leisurely Life of a Nun Making Revolutionary Church Food (legit the title is the summary)
- I’m a Spider, So What? (kinda slow-pace seinen type; MC gets reincarnated into a spider, and levels up, gaining skills and experiences (starting to pick up a good plot in recent chapters, though))
- Mata, Kataomou (The tear-jerker; Wishing for her love to come back to life, the MC is transported to an alternate universe where he never died, only to find that he didn’t remember her. She rebuilds their relationship from scratch.)
- ! Fiancee’s Observation Log of the Self-Proclaimed Villainess (unique isekai, told in the POV of the fiance of the reincarnator. Reincarnator is well-meaning girl, who’s a bit dense, while our MC is a cold genius, slowly warming up to the good-willed reincarnator)
- ! Lady Rose Wants to be a Commoner
****The GOLDEN SHOUJO MANHWAS: BEST OF THE BEST****
- ! The Reason Why Raeliana Ended up at the Duke’s Mansion (Intelligent MC, well-written storyline, romantic witty banter between MC and the duke; my personal favorite)
- ! Who Made Me a Princess (Focus on family; father-daughter relationship, some nice potential romance brewing in recent chapters, a clever MC)
- ! Doctor Elise (Mary-Sue MC; Basically Isekai Yakkyoku’s plot with a female MC and romance)
Manhuas in isekai don’t really match up, unfortunately, so they didn’t make it on the list, despite there being quite a few in my bookmark list.
And that’s the overview, folks!
There’s quite a lot I skipped over, so feel free to message me, or reblog with your own recommendations!
