Yelawolf - Trunk Muzik 3 ALBUM REVIEW

The release of the mixtape Trunk Muzik in 2010 made Yelawolf’s career take off. Pop The Trunk is still one of his biggest songs. Since then, Yelawolf has had an interesting rap career. He signed to Shady Records and released his album Radioactive in 2011 that the majority of his fanbase hated but I liked a handful of tracks off it it. It’s far from his best but it isn’t bad. 2013′s Trunk Muzik Returns was certainly a step up. As were his second and third studio albums, Love Story and Trial By Fire. I really liked both Love Story and Trial By Fire but for some reason I didn’t return to them enough for them to make by 2015 and 2017 lists. Earlier this year before Yelawolf started promoting TM3, I just felt the need to listen to some Yelawolf so I just started listening to his past projects a ton. Then he started dropping these crazy freestyles every week in preparation for Trunk Muzik 3. This album is apparently his last album on Shady Records. Honestly, I can see why Yela is leaving because Shady hasn’t been the best at promoting him and plus he has his own fanbase that is completely different from Eminem’s. Yelawolf doesn’t need Eminem’s cosign or a deal like Boogie does. All 8 of the freestyles he dropped this year were fire and I was real excited. I’m gonna start by saying I like this project but it is far from my favorite project from him. He is definitely rapping his ass off, especially on the first three tracks. That hard-hitting intro was the way to start off the album and then it went right into Catfish Billy 2. I remember the first Catfish Billy being my favorite song from Trunk Muzik Returns but I didn’t realize he had been using that nickname longer than that song was out. On Push Em he mentions Catfish Billy. Anyway, part 2 goes so hard. Surprisingly, my favorite song on this album is Rowdy. I love the way Yelawolf raps on this and the hook is perfect for the song. When I listened to this album for the first time I didn’t look at the tracklist but MGK is featured on the track. I used to like MGK’s music a lot back in 2012-2015. After that his music took such a big nosedive for me. I return back to his Black Flag mixtape every once in a while. It was weird to hear him on a track because this album is released through Shady and MGK and Eminem are not on good terms. I thought MGK had a very good verse which I didn’t expect because he’s been mediocre for about 4 years now and his diss track against Eminem sucked. I really am curious about what that conversation between Yelawolf and Eminem was like when he showed him MGK was on the song. What always disappointed me about Yelawolf is that on his albums there are always those songs I don’t like. Special Kind Of Bad and Like I Love You had such cringeworthy hooks that I really don’t wanna hear from him. The song Drugs was really great and showcased his storytelling abilities really well. The features on some of the following tracks were pretty bad. I would have preferred it if Yela got better features or just rapped by himself. Box Chevy V was one of my favorite tracks on Love Story but I wasn’t feeling Part 6 on this album. Addiction was one of the songs I was definitely loving because of the production. That song probably has the best beat out of all 14 tracks. I do like this album but I don’t find myself returning to this one as much as the other Trunk Muziks. Trunk Muzik Returns is definitely better than this. I would put that, Love Story and Trial By Fire over this album but it isn’t bad. With TM3 being his last album on Shady, I’m curious on what the future of Yelawolf is looking like.
