#31. Halloween / Death

Selfshiptober 2024 | [WC: 863] / so uhhh heed the prompt warning (it's not like gruesome but still involves death so) also spoilers for Love & Deepspace if anyone cares about that - this just felt like the perfect opportunity to tie this off with a lore-important fic so yeah :3

"Should I go check on them?" April asks quietly, more to herself. The longer Caleb and May stay outside, the more she feels something's going on. Maybe there actually is a Wanderer outside, and if so, she'd be able to help.

"They'll be alright. They're very capable kids," Grandma answers, spooning more food onto her plate. "Eat. They'll be back before you know it."

"Yeah…" April murmurs, continuing to eat. Her unease doesn't quite settle, but she tries to ignore it.

It's supposed to be a good occasion after all. Caleb's back for a little while and it's lovely getting to see him again. It's odd to not be able to see him all the time like she could when they were younger. But April's incredibly proud of him, too. Becoming a pilot for the Deepspace Aviation Administration is certainly impressive.

To ease her nerves, Grandma asks her a few more questions and she answers each one, relaxing more as she gets to talk about her life out in Linkon City - how it feels to work as both a baker and a part-time Deepspace Hunter.

Soon enough, the door cracks open and a wave of relief grips her heart at hearing Caleb's voice playfully teasing her sister. He enters the building and shuts the door behind him, and that's when everything changes.

It happens fast - a loud blast of sound and flash of light, barely enough time for April to register that her Evol has activated, shielding her from whatever the source of the noise is. Her eyes automatically shut and her hands cover her ears, the familiar chill of her shadows covering her body.

Her heart's pounding in her ears, and she counts out several beats before cautiously opening her eyes. She leaps to her feet as her stomach sinks, her eyes briefly scanning her surroundings.

Without her shield, she'd be dead.

Guilt wraps around her heart as she stands in the rubble of Grandma's house. If only she realized what was happening a split-second faster, she could've thrown her shield over them too and maybe…

No. May was still outside. Her eyes scan further out and she runs to the body she can see, tears prickling her eyes with relief as she sees movement. She watches as May reaches and grips Caleb's necklace in her fist before going limp against the pavement.

She's alive. She's alive.

"I've got you," April murmurs as she kneels down to her sister's crumpled form. She grabs the necklace and bracelet off the pavement - a matching set that they had bought Caleb before he left to start his job - and shoves them into her pocket.

She then carefully lifts her sister up into her arms, her mind whirling at what the next step is. Taking her to the hospital, obviously, but it's next to impossible to take an unconscious body on a motorcycle. Plus, the looks she'd receive.

She carries her away from the flames in the rubble, somewhere that she can sit and wait. Then she pulls her phone out of her bag and dials a familiar number.

"Zayne?" She asks as soon as he answers, her relief tipping him off that something had happened. "Are you busy? Can you pick us up?"

"I'm free. Where are you?" Through the phone, she can hear the sounds of him getting ready to leave wherever he is. She fills him in shakily, and he promises he'll be there soon.

"Should I stay on the line with you?" Zayne asks, his voice notably concerned. It's not rare for her to be on the brink of tears, but she knows how intuitive he is. He's bound to know something happened.

She's torn. She needs to let the authorities know that something's happened. Whether this is the doing of a Wanderer or something else… it's important to call Captain Jenna. She'd know who to contact for something like this.

So as much as she'd love the comfort of his voice, she tells him no. That she needs to call someone else.

His reply is even more alarmed as he's putting all the pieces together. "Alright. I'll be there as quickly as I can. Just hold on."

With that, he hangs up and she shakily makes the call to Jenna. She lets her know that she's taking her sister to get looked at medically, and that she'll come answer any questions she has to afterward once her sister's safe. Not that she has any clue about what happened, but it's her duty to report back.

Thankfully, Jenna understands. She says that she'll handle the rest from there, and April relaxes.

Once she's off the phone, she looks down at May. She doesn't look too injured. Given that she was outside still, she was shielded from the majority of the blast. But better safe than sorry.

Now, all she has to do is wait for Zayne while trying not to let it sink in that their family has been halved. There won't be time for those tears until after her meeting with Jenna.

She needs to stay strong for her sister.

She's all she has left.

i haven't put much thought into how i'd meet felicia (too busy focusing on my s/i's dynamic with sevika to care much about the backstory) but i could totally see it shifting into the dynamic isha had with jinx - like following her around and stuff. my s/i's like 11 when vi's born so if she knew her beforehand it'd be just like that <3

silco struggling to braid jinx's hair when she's young so he ends up coming to me to do it until she's able to braid her own hair. i can just imagine that conversation being awkward bc it wouldn't be long after everything happened at the cannery with vander & them but i accept more for her sake than his.

hi emile!!! thank you for the questions :3 you also get multiple: jinx + cassandra kiramman ^^

🦐 - has your familial other given you any gifts? what all have they given you? do you give them anything?

jinx: yes, she's made me a few different things, namely: a gun (she rarely makes other people weapons so it's pretty special). I can also see her finding little trinkets for me when she's out. yeah, i give her gifts - materials to work with, a few more personalized things. I'll also buy her things on occasion (especially her birthday) :3

cassandra: yes, she'll buy me new materials for my paintings (paints, easels, canvases, etc.) + other things (especially if cait wants to get me something) -- that's one of the reasons i have as many fancy dresses to wear to galas as i do. I'll bring baked goods often when i visit the manor + I'll occasionally make paintings for her (whether to hang up in the manor or sell; that's her choice). it's a little hard for me to get her things though when she has the money to get whatever she wants.

🦞 - do you "take "borrow" any of your familial others things? what?

jinx: ehh, not really. she's the one who borrows things from me - clothes, stuffed animals, etc. though she's younger, so that makes more sense.

cassandra: again, not really? i don't think i'd have the confidence to borrow her things (i'm usually too busy stealing cait's stuff to wear lol) / i feel like dishes might be the most i'd take (like say i'm bringing leftovers home and it's on one of their plates or something) but i'd clean it and return it once i'm done with it.

🦪 - who cooks more? whats your familial others favorite food? whats your favorite meal they make for you and/or you make for them?

Jinx: I do. I think in general she'd like sweets (cookies, cakes, etc). but for food, i don't know how picky she is? she does enjoy the pasta i make though!

cassandra: ((idk do they have an actual chef??? maybe)) likely she would be though again, i bring over baked goods a ton. my favorite meal would be any kind of cheesy pasta dish (or just noodles in general; given that this is a pretty asian household) // though honestly eating at the kiramman residence... the food's always good ^^

hiiii then maybe i'll answer for a few??? like i'm thinking jinx, isha, and jayce at least... :3

🦭 - do you argue about anything silly? if so, what?

for jinx, yeah, we'd have little debates over the most meaningless things. i could see her starting these as like a way to brainstorm ideas for her weapons. i can't think of like a specific topic because they'd be like random.

for isha... well, a verbal debate is out of the question. i feel like her 'arguments' would be her not wanting to do something so she'd just try really hard to be immovable, resisting even if i tried to drag her somewhere. beyond that, we're pretty calm.

jayce... yes. i can think of one like if i did a portrait of him and he's just like 'my nose doesn't look like that' and we argue over it before he admits he was just teasing. otherwise... i get roped into his little mini-arguments with viktor (again these are playful) but i see that as their dynamic while they're working in the lab + since i show up to sketch sometimes while they're working... i get involved too hehe :3

🐠 - what sorts of things do you associate your familial other with? what do they associate you with?

jinx: bombs lol, fireworks, the colors blue + pink, guns, + my s/i would associate her with her favorite food/snacks (they'd always be at her apartment/workshop); she associates me with hot cocoa, the colors pink + green, prosthetics, music (specifically lullabys) and just a sense of safety in general

isha: the color gold, sunshine, bunnies (bc of the rabbit ears she wears sometimes + stole off of jinx); she associates me with some of the same things jinx does (same s/i :3) + just warmth/feeling at home

jayce: hextech, engineering in general, the color blue, comfort; he associates me with the color purple, art (painting specifically), hot cocoa (again lol) & the baked goods I'll drop off at the lab occasionally ^^

🦑 - if y'all played mario kart together, which characters would you play as?

jinx: hmm... i think no matter what she'd play on a bike; I think like Peach (like she chose young and sticks to it) - also Pink gold Peach

isha: she'd either do baby peach (to match Jinx hehe) or baby rosalina (to match me); i also see her just sometimes playing as bowser idk

jayce: hmmm donkey kong maybe? or maybe he'd keep it simple and be either mario/luigi

as for me i'm either rosaline or link regardless of the s/i ^^

For Jayce, he's like an older brother to my s/i - same as he is to Cait. She would know him basically the same amount of time as Cait after all ^^ She likes spending time with him, especially if they're like body doubling (she'll bring her sketchbook to the lab and just sketch while they're working, enjoying the company even if they're not talking much).

I've mentioned before that their dynamic is a little less teasing than his & Cait's (though not completely bc I do get sarcastic/joking with people I’m comfortable around). My S/I knows she can go to him for any kind of comfort/advice (honestly his hugs would easily fix any bad mood she could be in) + he's one of her biggest supporters when it comes to her paintings <3

For Jinx, I'm gonna split this two ways. For my CaitVi S/I, she starts viewing Jinx as a younger sister during their time at the Commune. Before that, she did not like Jinx. The only positive about her was her connection to Vi and when Vi teamed up with the others to go after her, even that positive didn't matter much. But she gets to know her a little in season two and grows to care about her. And since she's not dead after season two in my au (and maybe in canon??), they'll have a chance to grow even closer once Jinx eventually returns to Piltover. After all, Jinx will be her sister-in-law ^^

For my Sevika S/I, Jinx is practically her daughter, or at the very least a younger sister. But like my S/I would've been 15 when Jinx was born so she's known her from a young age (and Powder would've looked up to her as a mentor for her engineering). She's very protective of Jinx and is always there for her whenever she needs it. If Silco can't find Jinx, 90% of the time, she's over at my shop/apartment. They manage to grow even closer after Silco's death (because Jinx needed comfort the most then). Aka, my S/I cares about her greatly and is very protective of her <3

💠+ ekko!

Ooh!! Okay so I have a few different s/is that know him so I'll give a summary for each

For my main CaitVi one (yknow the one whose fic I've been posting), she doesn't know Ekko all that well yet. She knows he's close to Vi (like a brother to her) and that's motivation enough to get to know him and become friends with him. She's particularly thankful that he helped Vi get down from the Hexgates after the battle & was looking after her. They definitely end up becoming friends! ^^

For my other CaitVi s/i (i haven't done much with hehe - it's a childhood friends to lovers thing on Vi's end), he's a younger brother to her. They start the Firelights together (which is how she meets Vi again once she gets out of Stillwater). But yeah, she's very fond of him, and very protective! ^^

For Sevika's S/I, it's pretty much the same as that last one. They're not as close because she still accepts business from Silco and his people and Ekko doesn't like that (plus how close she is to Jinx still). But if the Firelights needed materials or prosthetics from her for whatever reason, she'd never turn them away. But given that this s/i was also close to Benzo before, she and Ekko would still have that familial connection. He knows he can always come to her if he needs something, whatever that may be.

having thoughts so like my s/i was relatively close to felicia (in a daughter/younger sister way ofc) and therefore she's like a mentor to powder / on friendly terms with vi; and then like she knew vander & silco as well before everything happened. (like i think vander's like a father to her almost and silco's father/uncle like)

so then after felicia's death & what happened between vander and silco. she struggles to pick a side. sure, she's upset by what happened but she doesn't quite blame silco for it (whether he started that riot or not) so she doesn't like how vander handled it (he tells her about the letter he left for silco after and that smooths over her slight animosity). she only starts to dislike silco during act 1 with everything that happens in the cannery (especially benzo's death bc i feel she'd be close to him too given his store could get her parts to tinker with) - i think he'd leave her out of the loop on the production of shimmer & what it entails

i just think it's interesting to think about; the dichotomy of having once loved silco as a familial figure but like hating what he did to vander & benzo so it makes her awkward around him. but then how much she cares about jinx & her crush on sevika means she has to see him often enough.

there's seven years in the timeskip... maybe they manage to smooth things over in that time?

So for Jayce - like Caitlyn I view him as an older brother figure. I would know him just as long as Cait does (so whenever the Kirammans begin being his patron - like she knew him in s1 e2 when she was sixteen so that's the minimum of what I know - could have known him longer). Hmm, I feel like our dynamic would be a little less teasing than his & cait's (though not completely bc I do get sarcastic/joking with people I'm comfortable around)

But he'd be very supportive of my paintings & everything (especially I'm pretty sure he can draw in canon - like one of his workbooks had sketches in it if I'm right) // so sometimes we get together to snack on stuff and just draw/work together (especially if cait's busy and we all can't do something together)

In relation to this, I bake frequently (given that my parents run a bakery in town) so I bring baked goods up to the laboratory for him, Sky, and Viktor and that's where Viktor comes in hehe.

I feel like initially Viktor's like 'why is this teenager in our lab' but I feel like even he'd be willing to stop working for a treat break and that's how we start bonding. We're kind of siblings (though I don't think we'd hang-out as often as I do with Jayce - like whenever he leaves the lab we do but he seems the type to throw himself into his work so it's not super often hehe)

Again, I feel like I'd end up sketching or painting while he works when we do hang out (sometimes Cait joins me in visiting the lab and is like reading or working on something else - so we're all just body doubling basically). But anyways, it's like I'll talk to him whenever I see him at events & he cares about me/would be willing to give me advice if I need it! :3

(This is why when I did an arcane tierlist that I haven't posted yet lol that I put Jayce as full-familial and Viktor as 'sibling/platonic idk yet' because the dynamic kind of sits on the line) But anyways, that sums it up ^^ thank you again for the ask <3

hiii thank you!! yes he is - their like adoptive father figure and i think of him similarly!

for my main caitvi s/i - she only meets him as warwick but there is a father-daughter bond there a little during the limited time they have in the commune

i have a childhood friends au for vi (y'know instead of cait) - where she's practically living at the last drop with vi and her siblings so there's much more of a familial dynamic here

sevika's s/i would see him more as a father figure (for a longer period of time so hehe) // especially since she's close to felicia while she's alive and spends a decent amount of time at the last drop

plus there's my everything's good au so <3 and/or the au from s2 e7

but mostly he offers like a safe space for me - if i need to talk about something, he'll listen (usually while making me a drink (which varies depending on how old my s/i is - can't give a minor alcohol after all lol)) and he'll give advice if i need it. basically he's doing his best to be a good dad <3

okay for jinx i've answered that already on this post; in summary - one s/i sees her as a younger sister (though she's not really close to jinx fully by the end of season two) and the other thinks of her as her daughter! :3

ooh for black swan... idk which s/i is closer to her - either the astral express one or acheron's, in either case, the answer's the same! she's essentially an older sister figure // like she'll text her whenever she needs advice & finds her presence super calming (honestly i need to add her to the list on my rentry now that i'm thinking about it)

And then for Sandrone, my Harbinger has the closest relationship to her and they're friends! Honestly haven't thought too much into their dynamic (waiting for Sandrone to show up in game mainly) but I see them getting along and spending time together whenever my s/i's in Snezhaya
