Dad December - Day Fourteen: "Would You Hold My Hand?"
Summary: A visit to the hospital takes a dark turn for Izuku….at least his dad is there to hold his hand.
Trigger warnings: (Kind of) human experimentation, medical trauma, and Doctor Garaki and AFO being themselves.
Word count: 1,210
--
“Would you hold my hand?” His dad asks, extending a hand out for Izuku to take. They’re in the waiting room at the hospital. Neither of them are sick, and Izuku isn’t due for a checkup for another four months (he checked the calendar before they left).
It’s odd, too, because it’s always mom that takes him to the doctors. But mom went to the doctor’s yesterday, and she slept in. Dad said it’s because the appointment tired her out. Izuku doesn’t mind, though. That just means he can spend time with his dad.
“Okay,” he says, giving his hand over. His dad smiles at him, squeezing his hand.
“Hey, Izu, you know that I love you. Right?”
The question strikes Izuku as weird. Of course, he knows his parents love him. Why wouldn’t they? Sometimes they get frustrated with him or scold him when he does something bad. But they always make sure to tuck him in at night, read to him, hold him when he’s scared, and tell Izuku that they love him all the time.
“Yeah, and I love you and mom, too.”
There’s something in dad’s eyes. Something that Izuku with only eight years of being alive can’t place. He squeezes his dad’s hand, smiling just like All Might does.
Dad laughs, patting his head. “Silly boy,” he murmurs fondly.
The door to the lobby opens. “Midoriya Izuku?” A nurse calls out, scanning the room.
“Here!” His dad stands up, scooping Izuku into his arms.
“Right this way.” The nurse holds the door open, stepping aside to let them in.
Izuku clings to his dad, wrapping his arms around his neck. This place looks nothing like the doctor’s office that mom takes him to. That place has brightly-painted walls, and the nurses and doctors smile a lot.
But this place is dull. No one smiles, not even when Izuku smiles like All Might at them.
“Dad, I wanna go home,” he whines. He hates whining. Kacchan said it’s something that babies do, and Izuku doesn’t want to be a baby. However, this place is giving him a bad feeling.
His dad strokes his hair, humming. “This shouldn’t take very long, Izuku. Just stay calm.”
Izuku pouts and rests his hand on his dad’s shoulder.
“Ah, old friend,” his dad greets, going into one of the examination rooms.
“It’s been a minute.”
Izuku’s entire body freezes up. He tightens his hold on his dad’s neck. That voice. He knows that voice.
“And that must be little Izuku. Haven’t seen him since that doctor’s visit, what was it? Four years ago?”
“Three-and-a-half,” Izuku pipes up, voice muffled by his dad’s suit jacket. The memory of being told he has no quirk coming back with a vengeance.
“Ah, yes. Well, anyway. You can put him on the table over there.”
“I love you so much,” his dad murmurs into Izuku’s hair. He’s set down on a large metal table. It’s bigger than the examination tables in the other doctor’s office, and there’s no paper covering the top of it. He sends a questioning look at his dad, but the doctor steps in front of him.
He looks exactly the same as when Izuku last saw him, which doesn’t help the uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach. “Okay, I’m going to need you to lie back.”
Izuku stares at him blankly. “Why?”
“Because I said so.”
“I…I don’t want to.”
“I apologize, Izuku-Kun, I didn’t ask what you wanted. I asked you to lie back.”
Tears well up in his eyes. Why is he here? He doesn’t want to be here. “I want my dad!” Izuku cries, wiping his eyes. “I wanna go home!”
The doctor grumbles, grabbing Izuku by the shoulders and forcing him to lay down. “Lay down.” Izuku squirms, batting at the doctor’s hand. He screams, kicking his legs out.
One hit must land, because the doctor lets out a pained “ow” before stepping away. Izuku watches him limp over to his dad through watery eyes. They talk for a good five minutes, and he takes the time to collect himself.
By the time the doctor comes back over to him, Izuku has calmed himself down (for the most part). His dad stands close to him. “Izuku,” he says, “I’m here. Lie down. Do what the doctor tells you.”
“Hold my hand?” Izuku asks.
“Izuku,” his dad scolds him, but he doesn’t sound angry.
“Please,” he begs. “I’m scared. I…I want to listen. I will listen, if you hold my hand.” Izuku knows he should just do as he’s told, but he can’t appease the panic steadily rising up in his chest.
His dad’s expression softens. He takes Izuku’s hand. “Lay down.”
And Izuku, not wanting his dad to take his hand back, listens. He closes his eyes, and then opens them a moment later when the doctor scolds him.
A large machine is placed over his face. It’s like nothing Izuku has ever seen before. All metal pieces, cogs, and glass. The doctor lines up the two glass pieces with Izuku’s eyes. The metal is cold against his face, and makes him feel a bit claustrophobic. He squeezes his dad’s hand harder.
“Stay there,” the doctor says. “Don’t move a muscle.”
Not that Izuku could, even if he wanted to. Not with his dad’s hand holding his, and the machine half-hovering, half-lying on top of him.
“Sensei,” the doctor says. “It’s time.”
Before Izuku can ask who Sensei is, his dad’s hand slips from his. The panic he had previously under control, wells up inside him. He cries and screams out for his dad, but nobody responds. A bright light flashes, temporarily blinding Izuku.
He screams louder. “Daddy! Daddy help me!”
Another bright flash.
Izuku kicks as hard as he can. Except there’s no one to kick. Just a heavy machine that continues to flash bright lights into his eyes.
“Help! Help! Mommy! Daddy! I’m scared!”
But as the bright flashes continue, Izuku feels his energy drain. Eventually he can’t scream any longer. He lays still, head spinning and vision getting dimmer and dimmer.
-x-x-x-
All for One scoops his son off the table, exchanging a few words with his old friend. This wasn’t his first option. He would have preferred to use a quirk instead, but all of the ones in his arsenal wouldn’t hold long enough for it to be effective.
Izuku snuggles closer to him, little hands bunched up in his jacket. Poor thing. All for One kisses the top of his head.
Memory alteration is such a tricky business.
When his son and wife wake up, he’ll be gone. Hopefully not for more than a year or two, but even if he never comes back, they’ll never question his absence.
He arrives home to a quiet apartment. Inko must still be sleeping, but he’ll check on her before he leaves (just to be safe).
Hisashi places his son in bed, tucking him in. For a second, the urge to hold his son forever and ever, and never let him go is beyond overwhelming. He thinks about staying. Maybe he could watch Izuku grow up….
But it only lasts for a second.
“I’ll be home as soon as I can. I promise.”

{ATEEZ Yunho FF} Love Yourself (pt 1)
~Rating: Teen~ ~Yunho x fem.reader~ ~This is fictional~
Trigger warnings: Suicidal themes, self hate, and anything else that might be related
P.S. Sorry for grammatical errors/spelling mistakes ^^;
“You’re useless.”
“You never did do anything right.”
Words echo in your mind as you stand on the edge of the bridge that spans over Han River.
“Your older brother did so well; why are you always failing?”
Tears stung your eyes as you watched the water splash under you.
“You’re a burden. You’d be better dead.”
You take in a deep breath, hands tightening around the rail before releasing.
“We never did love you.”
That sentence repeats as the cold water engulfs you.
They said you’d be better off dead, so why not do something right.... right?
You could feel your lungs tightening. Less oxygen, more water. Black takes over. You feel yourself fading, and the last thing you’re aware of is a loud splash.
~
You woke up to the beeping and sterile smell of a hospital room.
I’m not dead?
You groan as you sit up, your head throbbing at the effort. A nurse with a clipboard finally notices the movement and looks at you.
“Oh, you’re awake!” she says. “I’ll go get the doctor.”
You blinked. Why were you here? You tried to take your life, so why aren’t you dead?
The more you thought about it, the more frustrated you were. Hot tears threatened to spill.
The door sliding open stopped you from crying though. Blinking away the tears, you looked up at the doctor.
“Glad to see you’re awake,” he said. He did his typical checking to make sure everything was fine with you. After he determined you were okay, he sat down at a desk and typed notes into a computer.
“Why am I here?” you ask, staring down at your hands.
The doctor glances at you. “You were rushed to the E.R.”
“But why?”
The doctor turns to fully face you. “You were unconscious and on the verge of death. You almost drowned.”
You glare at him, tears welling up again. “Because I wanted to! I jumped into that river with the intention of dying! I didn’t want to be saved!!” you shout, tears finally sliding down your cheeks.
The doctor gave you a sad look. “What happened to you?”
You froze.
He didn’t need to know. He’s a stranger, he doesn’t need to know about your private life. Anger flared up inside of you.
“That’s none of your business!”
He sighed, nodding in acknowledgement. “That’s fair.”
Surprised, you just blink at him. You couldn’t think of a retort. Instead, a question managed to wiggle its way into your mind.
“Who... who saved me?”
The doctor thinks about it for a bit. “Not sure; he rushed you here, soaking wet, but I don’t remember his name.”
The nurse interjected. She had been standing on the side, watching you yell at her boss. “I think his name was.. Jeong Yunho?”
“Oh, that’s right!” the doctor exclaims. “Jeong Yunho. He was the one that brought you here.”
Jeong Yunho.
That name rang in your mind.
“How old was he?”
“Not sure; I’d guess around your age,” the doctor said in a contemplative voice.
You hum to yourself. Maybe you can find this “Jeong Yunho” and give him a piece of your mind for interfering with your personal life.
Another question that you’d rather not know the answer to also made its way into your mind and out of your mouth.
“Does my family know I’m here?”
The doctor nods. “Yeah, we contacted them. No one’s come to visit though. Do they live far away?”
You clench the hospital beds’ sheets. “No, they live in Seoul.”
The doctor just goes “ah” and goes back to the computer.
Tired from the rush of emotions, you lay back down. Before you know it, you’re asleep.
~
You awake to a low murmur of familiar but not comforting voices. You internally sigh as you open your eyes to see your parents standing at the foot of the bed.
Your mom notices your glare first.
“Well, I see you took our advice,” she says bitterly.
You roll your eyes. “Yes, your advice to die.”
Your dad grits his teeth. “And yet another thing you failed at doing.”
It hurt.
The words hurt so much.
“I tried,” you whisper.
“Obviously, not hard enough!” your dad yells.
You want to cry, shout, scream... anything to show your storm of emotions.
Instead, you just mutter a question.
“Why do you hate me?”
Your parents scoff before exchanging a look between them.
“Maybe it’s because you’re more of a burden than anything else,” your mom sharply states.
My dad cuts in. “Everything we’ve tried to get you to like, you don’t. You wanted to become an idol, even though you can’t sing or dance.”
You bite your lip to prevent you from screaming at your tormentors.
Your mom was about to continue the barrage of insults when the sliding door flung open. The doctor came in, a stern look on his face.
“Time to get out,” he said while looking at my parents.
They looked furious at the interruption, but the doctor pointed to the door. “Out,” he commanded.
Your parents huffed and gave me one last glare before storming out of the room.
The doctor gave you an apologetic smile. “Sorry; they demanded to see you and since you were asleep, I figured it would be okay. I didn’t think you’d wake up so fast though.”
You wipe the tears out of your eyes. “It’s fine,” you mutter. You glance at the doc. “More checkups?”
The doctor smiles. “Actually, no. You remember that Yunho that saved you?”
You nod, wondering where he was going with this.
“He’s here, waiting out in the hall,” the doctor informed you.
Your eyes widen. He was here? Why?
“Why is he here?” you decide to ask.
The doctor gives you a teasing smile. “You’ll just have to find out yourself.”
He leaves the room, and you can hear his muffled voice talk to someone. Another male voice responds before a boy you don’t recognize steps into the room.
“Are you the infamous Jeong Yunho?” you ask warily.
He nods. “Yeah, I guess.” He pauses a moment. “How are you doing?”
You glower at him. “Still feeling like shit. Maybe I’d feel better if someone had let me die.”
Yunho’s eyes flash an emotion, but you’re not sure what it was.
Instead of prying into why you jumped, he pulls up a chair and sits next to the bed. You raise an eyebrow.
He ponders something for a second before speaking. “Well, I’m Jeong Yunho. What’s your name?”
You squint at him. What’s he trying to do?
Reluctantly, you reply. “Y/N.”
He smiles at the information. “That’s a pretty name.”
“Thanks... I guess?” you mutter. You had to be visibly confused by now.
Yunho thinks for another second. “What’s your favorite color?”
“Um... (your fav color)?”
“Ahh, that’s a beautiful color,” Yunho replies back.
You furrow your brows. Okay, this was weird.
“Why are you asking me these things?” you ask.
Yunho’s eyes widen. “Why not? I’m just trying to get to know you.”
“Why?”
Yunho tilts his head, a questioning look on his face. “Am I not allowed to be your friend?”
A friend? All the friends I had were people my parents forced me to meet, but they took me out places. Sure, they used me to carry around bags of clothes, or they tried making me do things I didn’t want to, but aren’t those “friends”?
Noticing the obvious confusion on your face, Yunho blinks. “What are your friends like?” he asks, catching on quickly.
“Well, they make me run their errands. They said the more I do, the more I’ll be respected by them. They also try to get me to drink with them sometimes, which they said will also make me more fun...” you trail off as you notice the dark look in Yunho’s eyes.
The boy sighs.
“I’m sorry, Y/N. Those aren’t friends,” he said apologetically. You blink a couple times. He continues since you’re too confused and shocked to say anything. “A true friend won’t force you to do things if you’re uncomfortable with it. A true friend will help carry your burdens instead of forcing theirs onto you. A true friend will defend you. A true friend will love you.”
Love?
No one ever loved you. You knew your friends weren’t really... nice, but they weren’t friends at all? Did your parents lie to you? It wouldn’t be outside the realm of possibility though...
Dubious, you narrow your eyes at Yunho. “And how am I supposed to just trust you? You were this weird stranger that saved me, took me to a hospital, and visited them just because you want to be friends?”
Yunho sighs. “I don’t expect you to trust me or believe me yet, but if you give me time, I’ll make you realize just how valuable you are.”
“What?” A mixture of emotions swirled in the pit of your stomach. “I’m not..- I’m a failure. How can I be valuable...?”
Anger finally won out.
“You’re lying! You’re trying to manipulate me!” You shout at the poor boy.
He sighs, sadness clearly on his features, but you’re too angry to notice and/or care. He stands up. “Just think about the things I’ve said,” he said in a hushed voice.
“Get out!!!” you yell louder.
Yunho flinches, but he leaves the room. You lay down, your back facing the door.
After about 20 minutes, you hear the door open again.
“Y/N?” You recognized the doctor’s voice. “I have a note for you. I’m going to leave it on the end table. Read it whenever you want to,” he said in a quiet voice.
You let out a sound of acknowledgement, but not turning around to look at him.
A few hours pass, but you can’t sleep, so you decide to check out the note.
“Y/N, I know you don’t trust me. I don’t blame you. But just give me one chance to prove you wrong. My number is (XXX-XXX-XXXX) so text me, and I’ll take you for a day out. I’ll show you what fun really is. You don’t need to trust me fully, but give me the tiniest bit of your trust, and I can save you.
Sincerely,
Yunho”
“I can save you”.
Tears streamed down your face. You weren’t even aware you were crying until you saw a drop of water land on the note.
“Yunho... there’s no saving me, so why...? Why are you trying?”

day 6: pets | ethan/bryce x mc
pairing: ethan x mc & bryce x mc
@choicesfebruarychallenge | @bi-cookie ; @cxld-play
word count: 1,712
author’s note: this fluffy fic was inspired by the john mulaney bit where he jokes about american politics and compares it to a “horse being loose in the hospital”. i took it literally! hope you enjoy - i still think it might be a dumb idea but i’m hope it makes you laugh!
Spencer’s phone buzzed in her scrubs pocket, taking her out of the intense reading she was doing on Ms. Martinez’s file.
EMERGENCY. MEET AT THE SIDE ENTRANCE OF THE BUILDING. BE SNEAKY. Sienna’s text in the group chat came as a shock to Spencer. She’d never seen a message quite that serious from Sienna before.
She power walked down the hallway, trying to make it to the elevator unnoticed. Just as the doors opened, Dr. Ramsey rounded the corner.
She stepped in calmly, then mashed buttons as soon as she was safe. “C’mon, c’mon close,” she muttered to herself, clicking the close door button repeatedly.
“Hold the door, rookie,” he called, and they locked eyes through the slit of the closing doors.
“Sorry,” she mouthed, tapping her watch and shrugging.
His eyes narrowed, but before he could say anything, the elevator’s numbers lowered, quickly bringing Spencer to the first floor.
She blew air out of her cheeks. Avoiding Dr. Ramsey since the night they’d nearly had sex at the convention had been hard, but worth it for Spencer’s sanity. She couldn’t take much more of the “will they, won’t they” sexual tension between them.
The doors opened, and she snuck out the side door, almost running into the back of Elijah’s wheelchair.
The whole group was assembled, talking in hushed voices.
“What’s wrong? I came as fast as I could,” Spencer panted, eyes darting between her friends’ concerned faces.
“We have a huge problem,” Sienna frowned.
“Okay, bring me up to speed. What can I do to help?” She said, already putting her game face on, ready to rack her brain to help Sienna diagnose a patient.
“There’s a dog loose in the hospital,” Sienna grimaced.
She squinted her eyes, confused. “Is this a prank? I really don’t know if I’m in the mood to joke around, guys.”
“Unfortunately, Sienna isn’t lying. I saw the dog when his owner brought him in,” Jackie said, her arms crossed firmly across her chest.
“You’re telling me a service dog is roaming around, not listening to his owner? Did they lie about him being a service dog?” Spencer wondered aloud, trying to piece the story together.
“No, he’s definitely certified,” Elijah said, shrugging. “I asked to pet him and his owner’s mom declined. She said he was working.”
“I guess she knew taking his vest off wasn’t a great idea,” Landry added, eyeing Sienna.
The door behind them opened, revealing Bryce. “Thanks for including me. This is the most action I’ve gotten all week. Appendectomies just weren’t cutting it today,” he grinned.
“Okay one, weak, and two, thanks for finally joining us,” Jackie rolled her eyes.
“I can’t help that I’m not in your roomie group message,” Bryce shrugged.
“Can we get back to the story, please?” Sienna asked quietly, worry written across her features.
“Okay, so you took the vest off the dog, he thought he clocked out, and he’s just doing what a normal dog would do?” Spencer said, rotating her wrist so that Sienna knew to speed it up.
“I’m not that careless, Spencer. His owner is here for a routine checkup for her epilepsy. He was looking kind of sad while I was going through her chart with her mom, so when they went back for an MRI I thought it’d be a good idea to let him be free for a few minutes,” she said, regret written on her features.
Spencer’s look of disapproval prompted her to continue. “I know it was so dumb of me. I didn’t see him as a service dog on duty, just a sad pet that wanted to take a break and play. I need everyone’s help to find him.”
“Where’d you lose him?” Bryce asked.
“Well, I was near the construction… you don’t suppose he managed to go back there or down the stairs?”
“Let’s hope not,” Landry said nervously, wringing his hands in front of him.
“Okay, we’ll split up in pairs to look for him. It’ll definitely be quicker that way,” Spencer said.
“Elijah and I will check the ER,” Landry volunteered, already heading towards the door, Elijah tailing him.
“Jackie? Sienna? You okay with taking the next couple of floors while Bryce and I look through the labs, the construction, and any other restricted areas?” Spencer asked.
“You got it, boss,” Jackie smirked, walking inside.
“I guess it’s just you and me,” Bryce smiled, his hand on the small of her back, coaxing her towards the door.
----
“Goddammit, where is that dog?” Spencer muttered, frustration creeping into her voice.
“Hey, if you look on the bright side, we’re kind of like Mystery Inc. and we’re looking for Scooby Doo,” Bryce said, as you both jogged down the hallway, peering into the labs.
“What, did you say that because you want me to say you’re Fred?” She laughed, glancing back at Bryce’s smirk.
“And you’re my Daphne,” he said before checking the largest lab on that floor.
“I’m definitely not Daphne. Sienna is more of a Daphne-type than I am,” Spencer smiled, running into the elevator. “I’m definitely Velma.”
“I guess that makes me Shaggy, huh?” He said into your ear, and you became acutely aware of the heat from his body.
“So who’s Fred now?” She said, pushing a numbered button to head towards the wing under construction.
“Elijah, hands down,” Bryce chuckled, his arm propped up on the bar on the wall of the elevator, his skin grazing her scrubs.
“What about Landry and Jackie?” She said, glancing at his face, so close to her own.
“Probably the people they unmask at the end. They’re too competitive to have everyone’s best interests in mind,” he shrugged.
“Awe, that’s no fair. I wouldn’t guess a scalpel jockey would understand our competition,” she teased, turning to place a soft kiss on his jaw.
He leaned in with his eyes closed, but Spencer put a finger on his lips. “We’re getting distracted. We gotta find this dog first.”
“What’s its name anyways?” He said, stepping out into the hallway as the doors opened.
“Huh, good question. I’ll ask,” she said, typing a quick text to Sienna.
She replied immediately. I don’t know. I know she said it, but I was so focused on the patient’s charts and the mom being so stern I forgot.
“Sienna doesn’t know the dog’s name,” she said to Bryce, and he shrugged.
They slipped into the construction side unnoticed, eyes scanning the hallway. Spencer already had a distraction ready in case he wanted to check the rooms and stumbled across Naveen.
“Here, boy,” Bryce called repeatedly, making kissing noises.
“I don’t know if that’s going to work. He should only respond to his name, right?” Spencer mused.
The golden retriever bounded around the corner before they scan the rooms, mouth open, tongue hanging out the side of his mouth.
Bryce eyed her up and down. “I told you so.”
He ran to meet the dog, and fell on the ground, cuddling the wiggling ball of fur as he happily lapped the side of Bryce’s face. “Hey, boy, awe, you’re so good,” he laughed, scritching behind his ears.
Spencer enjoyed the sight of the hot surgeon and cute dog playing for a few more seconds before texting the group.
“Okay, so Sienna’s going to meet us with his vest, and we’re sneaking him back into the waiting room on this floor. The mom should be showing up there soon since they’re almost done with her brain scans.” She shoved the phone back in her pocket.
Bryce laid on the ground, spooning him and completely ignoring her. He hugged the dog to his chest, kissing his head.
“This is really cute, Bryce, don’t get me wrong, but we have to bring him back right now,” she said, extending a hand to him.
He grabbed it, and pulled her down on top of him. “Bryce! We have to go –”
He pressed his lips to hers, cutting her off. She sighed contentedly against his lips.
She knew she was falling for Dr. Ramsey, but she couldn’t see him defying the rules to be with her. Even if she was just fooling around with him and didn’t plan on anything serious coming from it – regardless, Bryce made her feel good.
Things were much more simple with him than with Ethan.
She pulled back, and he gazed at her, smirking. “You have to admit that was smooth.”
“Alright, if it’ll get you to get up any faster, then yes.”
They stood up, walking with the dog towards the entrance. Sienna burst through the clear tarp, followed by the rest of the gang.
“Hi doggy! We’re gonna get you back to your owner now. Please don’t tell them about this,” she whispered to him, clasping the buckle on his side, fastening the vest to him.
“Okay, now if that’s over, I’m gonna get back to my patients,” Jackie said, and stalked off without another word.
“Me too,” Landry said nervous, scuttling away.
“I’m happy Horse is back safe. Hopefully they haven’t noticed –” Elijah said, but Spencer and Bryce were quick to cut him off.
“His name is Horse?” Bryce asked.
“You’re telling me there was a Horse loose in the hospital?” Spencer asked.
“That’s what his name was! I remembered it being weird, but I forgot it was the name of another animal,” Sienna said, smacking the side of her head with the palm of her hand.
“Is there a story behind it or something?” Spencer was dumbfounded, and Bryce couldn’t stop laughing at the situation. HIs laughter was infectious, and before she knew it, she was doubled over, and Elijah and Sienna followed soon after.
When they caught their breath, Elijah explained.
“She named him when she was young, before the seizures started. Her parents sent him off to be trained as a support animal so they wouldn’t have to get another dog.”
“On that note, I’m gonna head back to my patients.” Spencer headed off, waving at her friends.
She knew that she couldn’t avoid Dr. Ramsey for much longer, and the situation stressed her out to no end; Regardless of it all, she still had the ability to laugh, so she knew she was going to be okay.

Meningitis
Pairing: Y/N/Ex-husband!Ashton
Rating: All (But this can get a little angsty)
Request: No
Words: 4.500+
Summary: Ashton flies all the way from London to Sydney in a rush to support his ex-wife because their son is admitted to the hospital diagnosed with meningitis.
With folded fingers and eyes focusing on the careful breathing coming from the white sheets, you held in your own and closed your eyes.
It was the feeling of wanting to scream and shout. Do something to give the feeling of actually doing something about the situation. Sitting in here felt like a prison, like you couldn’t escape the four walls.
Your eyes glanced towards your son Daniel, his fragile small body almost covered in the puddle of his sheet and tubings. His eyes were peacefully closed and blocked out from the terrifying situation he was suddenly put into.
You honestly couldn’t believe your own eyes.
“I’m here, I’m here.” The door burst open with a panting Ashton barely letting go of the door handle, his chest heaving up and down and his eyes searching for results.
You stood up from your chair quickly and tried not to cry. It was just as if reality hit you hard the second Ashton was pulled into the nightmare.
“Oh my god.”
Ashton was still holding onto the boarding pass from his airplane flight. It was crumbled between his long fingers and his gaze was directly pointed towards the hospital bed.
Any other moment than this you would scold at him. Not for one but many things. It was moments like these that you needed him the most. Not because you weren’t strong enough, but because your son needed both his parents in a time like this.
He let go of the door handle and approached the room. It had been quiet, the only source of sounds came from the monitor that proved that his heart was still beating. But it was slow and almost quiet. Sometimes if you closed your eyes, you couldn’t point out what was loudest.
That, or your own heart pacing for your life.
You held onto the brown bunny that was seeming to be the only thing keeping you from crashing something between your fingers. It didn’t have a name but when Daniel was younger he called it Michael.
Simply because he had gotten it from his favorite uncle.
Ashton ran a hand through his hair, the curly mess sticking to his fingers but he pulled so hard he didn’t mind ripping out pieces of his hair. He could feel his heart race as well and he looked over at you for answers.
“It’s not looking good.” You whispered below a breath.
You didn’t want to act mad at him. It didn’t make sense in a time like this but without control of emotions. You just couldn’t. You were angry, you were frustrated but with a feeling of deep sorrow.
You could compare it to a hole in your heart. The one thing that was holding it together was fighting for his own life. You couldn’t even feel his presence in the room if it wasn’t for the fact that the heart monitor was still going on.
“I talked to him on the phone yesterday, I was FaceTiming him-,” Ashton didn’t know how to finish his sentence. He was stumbling over his words.
“He said he just had a small headache and sore in his neck. I just assumed it was from swimming, he said he had been jumping on the low side again and hit the bottom.”
You quivered an eyebrow because Daniel had left out that information yesterday after his swimming practice. You shrugged off the thought and held the bunny closer to your heart.
“You’re sure it’s meningitis?”
You didn’t know what to answer. You weren’t a doctor, you couldn’t point out a statement without knowing if it was true or not.
You just didn’t want to state something at all. You couldn’t say out loud that something was wrong because that meant you had to face reality. You weren’t ready for that yet.
Just not yet.
Ashton walked closer to the bed and shrugged his hand over the white sheets. His eyes were searching desperately for his son’s, they looked identical. The same hazel effect with a hint of green. Sometimes you swore you looked into the eyes of Ashton when speaking to your son.
He was about to ask another question when the door to the hospital room opened.
“Ashton, this is Dr. Darren. He’s been helping Daniel since we arrived this morning.” You introduced and the doctor moved his hand out from his pocket to greet Ashton.
“The father, I assume.” Dr. Darren gave Ashton a second look and he nodded his head in agreement.
“I came as fast as I could,” Ashton spoke in purely honest and watched the doctor head towards the monitor. He needed to make checkups, he came every twenty minutes to see Daniel’s statement.
“Has your ex-wife explained to you about meningitis?” He asked and Ashton shook his head.
“Are you sure it’s me-,”
“The tests were positive.” Dr. Darren answered Ashton’s question before he could finish it.
Ashton’s lips folded together and he blinked twice looking over at his son. Suddenly, it was as if reality hit him. You were still standing in denial by the end of the bed.
“No, I don’t know much about meningitis,” Ashton answered defeated, placing his hands in his back pockets and had trouble keeping his eye contact with Dr. Darren.
“Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes surrounding your brain and spinal cord. The swelling from meningitis typically triggers symptoms such as headache, fever and a stiff neck. Most cases of meningitis are caused by a viral infection, but bacterial, parasitic and fungal infections are other causes.”
“And in English?” Ashton didn’t want to come off as rude but his emotions were being torn and played with. He wasn’t the one in control of it and he felt as if he was a puppet with threads.
“Ashton.” You scolded at him quietly.
He glanced over at you, not knowing what else to say and glanced over at the doctor. He never wanted to be rude. That wasn’t like him.
Dr. Darren sighed with a sad smile. He experienced this every single day. It came with the job, some times things were happy and sometimes he brought work with him home.
“Your son has a dangerous disease which needs to be treated with antibiotics. It’s an infection in his brain which can cause various injuries if not treated in time. We’ve been giving him antibiotics since this morning when they came from their own personal doctor, but so far we can’t see the future problems.”
Ashton looked at him with serious eyes, trying to understand what was going on. He had heard about the disease before, but only on the occasions where the antibiotics had been giving too late.
“What are the percent chances?” He asked with his fingers folded and glanced over at you for a second.
He glanced back at the doctor, waiting for an answer. Dr. Darren sighed.
“Bacterial meningitis is a dangerous disease which, untreated, has a very high mortality rate, almost 100 percent. Despite the best possible treatment, 5-15 percent of the disease still dies, as the disease may develop very rapidly in some cases.”
Not the words Ashton needed to hear. He could see on your face it wasn’t a question you had asked previously. It was hard to hear those words come out from his mouth.
“In addition, 10-15 percent get severe injuries and sequelae such as amputation, epilepsy or significant hearing loss. However, if the first critical day is over, the prognosis is very good, and most of the people get out of their way.”
“You heard that,” Ashton looked over at you softly, “That are the notes we need to stick to the surface. We can’t believe in positivity if we go after the negative right away.”
You nodded your head slowly and placed your hand on the top of the sheets. You just wished that you could feel a bit of movement.
Usually, Daniel hated when you would be touching his calves. Whether it was ‘mom disease’ or just the fact that he was very ticklish you didn’t know.
“Right now his condition is stable but I can’t promise anything when he wakes up. We’ve been trying to balance pain killers with a bit of morphine just to take away the pain he was suffering from.” Dr. Darren took a look at his papers just to make sure nothing was missed.
“I will be back in the next twenty minutes. I think one of our nurses will show up to give another round of antibiotics.”
“Thank you.” You smiled gently at Dr. Darren the best you could. It was with a cut through your heart and the second he was out of the door, the corners of your mouth turned down.
You sighed so heavily you could feel it from your toes and your stomach. This was harder than anything else you had gone through.
This was harder than giving birth.
Ashton moved closer to the bed and sad on the other side from where you were sitting. He looked like someone who had a million thoughts racing but his mouth was shut close.
“I know you’re really mad at me but this was not something I couldn’t predict.”
You didn’t know you should roll your eyes by his start of a conversation. It was already going downhill.
“You left for an 8 months length tour. Traveling through Asia, Europe, and the states. No, you couldn’t predict that bad luck would suddenly hit our family and that’s not what I’m mad about.”
“What is it then?” He asked desperately but continued to have a calm voice. He didn’t want to lash out after you when you were most vulnerable.
“I’m angry that you left him. You know he loves you more than everything-,”
“I asked him to come with me and you said no.” Ashton quickly interrupted you causing you to widen your eyes.
“You wanted your eight-year-old son to travel with you across the world and skip his school? Skip his swim classes, skip all his friends and family, not just mine but also yours living here in Sydney? Of course, he was going to say yes because all he wanted to do was to be with his father. But that wasn’t the right decision and I had to step in because you couldn’t face reality.”
You didn’t want to cry, you had been holding in the whole day but seeing Ashton here woke up so many memories. It was like you went from 50 to 90.
“He barely spoke to me for a whole week, Ashton. I felt as if he hated me. Because I was the evil mom who wouldn’t let him travel with his father. The bad mom knowing that staying home would be best for his development and life.”
Ashton looked at you by every word that came from your mouth. He could see how your voice was ready to crack and your heart was pacing quicker.
You looked over at Daniel with shiny eyes, deciding that it was not the time for crying. You could still hold it in. You didn’t need Ashton to crack you now.
“I’m sorry.” He looked at you sincerely but you shook your head.
“I’m not the one you should tell sorry.”
You glanced back at Daniel and leaned over to grab his hand. Just so carefully and you looked down at the venflon. He wore a hand glove over it, the typical one that was white and blue like a net.
He hated needles. You were so happy that he wasn’t going through the pain because he was already in and out of sleep. It made it so much easier because one thing was being a mom through hard times.
Seeing your son in pain was the worst.
He had barely noticed he was wearing it when he woke up during lunch. He didn’t seem to be awake though, he moved like a zombie. You almost couldn’t recognize him.
“Remember the last time he wore that?” Ashton asked and you nodded your head silently.
“Luke’s idea. Still probably the biggest regret.” You shook your head in disbelief by the memory.
Last time you were at the hospital with Daniel was when he was four. It was Luke’s idea of going to one of the highest mountains in LA and going on the sled. It was a mistake though that you let him use the sled on his own. When Luke pushed him he crashed right into a tree and broke his arm.
“It literally took us an hour to calm him down before getting the venflon into his veins,” Ashton remembered back and folded his hands together.
“He just hates needles. I’m not looking forward to his 12-year vaccine.” You mumbled and Ashton chuckled sadly.
You both sat in silence for a minute, attention towards the door when it opened.
“Oh my, Y/N. You still haven’t left the room?” The nurse looked at you with worried eyes.
You shook your head silently and ignored Ashton’s eyes. He did that when he was worried and especially when he was worried about you.
“For how long have you been sitting here?” The nurse was named Sandra, she looked at the both of you with worried eyes. She smiled gently at Ashton and shook his head, realizing he was an unfamiliar face.
“Since we arrived at ten. I’m impressed you are here too, shouldn’t your shift be over by now.”
“Yes, I should have left when we switched shifts at 6 p.m but I took an extra. Sometimes stories like these come closer to our hearts. I just need to be here until you are released from the hospital. You know, I usually say this to the patients that they need to eat. But you haven’t touched anything and I can still see the glass of water I served you this morning.”
You eyes glanced towards the glass and you sunk deeper into the bed.
“I’m just not thirsty.” You mumbled, looking down at the sheets and fiddled with it between your fingers.
“You haven’t been drinking or eating since morning?” Ashton looked at you almost in disbelief, his tone nice.
He looked up at the nurse in confusion and she nodded her head silently. She couldn’t force you to do to anything but you’d admit you had been very stubborn about leaving the room.
“It would be a great idea if you guys went for a walk. Just to get some fresh air or stretch your legs. It sometimes helps on the thoughts. Maybe a glass of water.” The nurse looked over at Ashton, sincerely hoping that he could convince you.
“I’m not going anywhere as long as he is sleeping. I need to be here when he wakes up.” You were trying to sound strong but your voice came off weak.
Ashton folded his hands together and moved them up to his mouth in thought.
He looked back at the nurse trying to come up with some sort of idea.
“Y/N, please.” He almost pleaded, “You need to eat something.”
“I promise you, I will be in here until you come back. If something happens, you will be the first one I call.” The nurse joined Ashton’s convincement.
You looked between them both with folded lips. You felt torn between being glued to the bed and standing up. You didn’t know if you were going to regret it, but deep down you knew it was a good idea.
“Okay,” You mumbled carefully and moved up from the bed.
Ashton smiled carefully. He was happy that you agreed to and he stood up from the bed as well.
“You promise me?” You looked over at the nurse daringly. The smallest thing could ruin your trust and you did not want to go through that.
She nodded her head and Ashton placed a hand gently on your back to follow you out of the room. Normally you would have shrugged him off but the feeling of his hand reminded you of home.
You walked out on the quiet hallway where only unused beds with plastic covering them stood placed. You could hear someone talk from down the hallway, it came from the office where they received calls.
It had become late at night which meant visitor hours were over but being on the children’s ward, parents were allowed to stay. They even agreed to give you a bed if you weren’t released before midnight.
You stopped in track when you walked past the waiting room. It was filled with navy blue empty chairs, you compared them to the same as in the airports. There was a large floor to ceiling window which showed the city.
So many beautiful city lights but nothing was appreciated tonight.
When you came down to the first floor and outside where a water foundation was standing, you could release the pain that was going through your veins.
“Do you know you’re the strongest woman I know?” Ashton said carefully and shrugged off his jacket.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” You shook your head and looked at him gently when he placed his jacket over your shoulders.
So many lights came from the hospital you didn’t need lights from the streetlamps.
“I honestly feel like I need a cigarette.”
“But you’ve never had a cigarette in your life?” Ashton reminded and leaned his back against the brick wall.
“Maybe I should start. I think it could help with my stress.” You ran a hand through your hair.
You didn’t have a count of how many times you had done that today. It had been pulled and pulled, mixed between being in a bun and not.
“Not after how many drunken times you’ve tried to convince Calum it was a bad habit.” He mentioned and you looked him tiredly.
He was having that look on his face where you knew you couldn’t get past him until you were feeling okay. He knew he couldn’t change the situation you were in. It was hell, it was hurtful but he tried his best to make you feel as comfortable as possible.
You looked at him with furrowed eyebrows.
“What did the boys say?” You scratched your arm carefully and looked down at the ground. The tiles were shiny, you were surprised that even outside the hospital everything was clean.
“They understood the situation. There wasn’t even a discussion. The second I mentioned something happened to Daniel, Luke already found my suitcase and helped me pack. Before I could look over my shoulder one of the managers fixed a plane ticket to Sydney.”
You nodded your head silently and watched him continue.
“I think everyone in the world would understand my situation. I know there are still 23 shows left but they are either going to be canceled or done without me. I bet if they asked a collab from All Time Low they could probably help them out to fill my spot. I don’t care. I’m not going anywhere until we know that Daniel is feeling alright.”
Ashton licked his lips and looked down at the ground as well. He was a hard time looking at you for some reason.
“How have you been?”
The question seemed dumb, Ashton could tell when it slipped past his lips. He wished he could take the question back when you looked at him with dark eyes.
“I’m a single mother trying to give my son the best life possible. Sometimes I wonder if he feels like he doesn’t have a father.” You leaned down to stand against the brick wall with your knees bent.
Ashton’s mouth twisted into a sad mine and he scratched his arm, “You don’t think he feels like that, do you?”
You looked up at him from having your knees between your legs, “Put yourself into his position and give me the answer when you’ve thought about it. I’m sure it makes sense when you reconsider the situation.”
“I talk to him almost every single day.” Ashton didn’t want to use it as an excuse but neither did he want you to accuse him of doing literally nothing.
“You know Daniel. You know he is a security addict. He needs someone close to him to know that they love him and won’t leave him behind. Don’t you remember when he was younger and the only thing he wanted was you? I couldn’t do anything right. Not even if I was the one breastfeeding him, he still wanted to be in your safe arms!”
You shook your head in disbelief and folded your lips together.
“I just can’t believe that this happened to him. He’s so full of life and wants to do something positive every single day. If he reminds me of someone, he reminds me of you. Wants to explore every single part of himself and the world. It’s just too early for him to leave. I don’t and won’t allow him to be a part of 15%.”
Ashton’s jaw clenched and he took in every word you said. He understood you were having a hard time. After the divorce, he had sleepless nights wondering how you were feeling.
“Ashton,” You looked up at him with shiny eyes.
“I’m about to break.”
At first, he furrowed his eyebrows, not knowing how to handle your statement. He assumed you had said it a couple of times today but then his eyes widened.
“Ashton, I’m breaking.” You hiccupped and moved your hands up to your face to cover it.
It took him less than a second to wrap his long arms around your form and pull you close. His heart was probably pounding as fast as yours was, but he pushed his feelings aside to be there for you.
You held onto his shirt as if life depended on it, letting the tears float without worrying about everything else around you.
You needed the feeling of comfort and even if you didn’t want to admit it to yourself, the only one who could truly comfort you would be Ashton.
He stood up from the ground with you and wrapped his hand in your hair. Carefully shrugging his hand up and down in comfort, while whispering soft words that were going to calm you down.
“It’s going to be okay, I promise you.” He moved away when you calmed down and placed his hands on your cheeks.
“You just have to trust me, okay. It’s going to be okay.”
You whimpered and looked into his eyes. It did in fact help to calm you down and you closed your eyes. Just thinking for a second and trying to compose yourself.
You felt vibrations from your phone and you quickly rushed to rip it out from your pocket.
“It’s Sandra, Daniel’s nurse.” You looked up at him with wide eyes and his lips parted.
“She says we need to come urgently.”
Ashton didn’t need to hear you finish the sentence to know what was going on. He grabbed your hand and had a direction towards the entrance to the hospital.
“Run.”
You could barely keep up with his long legs. Ashton was running so fast you needed to hold his hand just to make sure he wouldn’t escape from you. It felt like the quickest trip to the 11th floor and when you almost crashed into the door to Daniel’s hospital room, Ashton had to place his hands on your hip.
“What’s going on?” You rushed into the room and scanned for the nurse.
Your mouth opened agape and Ashton almost knocked himself into your back when you stopped walking.
He didn’t understand why you had stopped up but that was when his eyes adverted towards the bed where Daniel was sitting up in the bed with a glass of water.
“Daniel?” You had to ask out loud just to make sure this was real.
He didn’t look fully fresh but at least he was awake. He had tired eyes, no wonder but he smiled when he saw both you and Ashton here.
“He’s awake. We just checked his system and monitors. He doesn’t need more antibiotics treatments.”
“You mean he’s cured?” Ashton asked to be sure and Sandra nodded her head in agreement.
“If you want to stay for the night you’re allowed to just for extra checks but if you want to go home you’re also allowed to do that. We just have to take one last blood example in 15 minutes.”
You nodded your head in agreement but your eyes weren’t on her. They were on Daniel and he was smiling towards you.
“Mom, I’m feeling much better than I did this morning.” He explained and you nodded your head in agreement.
“I’m so happy to hear that.” You took a seat down by the end of the bed and grabbed his hand. The one with the venflon and his eyes widened when he noticed it.
“I’ve been wearing this all day?” He asked and you laughed.
“Yes, Mrs. Sandra make a great job putting it on without you noticing.” You smiled over your shoulder where Sandra was standing, holding onto her papers with a satisfied smile.
“I’ll leave you to decide.” She started to back away and walked out of the room.
“Dad?” Daniel had to ask when he looked over at Ashton who seemed both relieved but at the same time guilty.
“Hey, bud. I missed you.” Ashton took a seat on the opposite side of you and placed his hand on the sheets.
“I missed you too.” Daniel almost whispered and looked down at the sheets.
You looked between them with furrowed eyebrows. You could tell Daniel was bothered by something.
“Are you leaving if we drive home? Because then I want to stay here for the night.”
It almost killed Ashton to hear those words. His eight-year-old son really knew how to hit him in the feels where it hurt. He folded his hands together and with a small smile, he shook his head.
“I promise you, I won’t leave you for weeks.”
“But dad, you can’t cancel your tour.” Daniel shook his head but Ashton was settled with his decision.
“I can do everything I want as long as my son feels happy. Besides, FaceTime can never beat this feeling.” He carefully caressed Daniel on the arm and smiled when he looked ecstatic.
“Can you live with mom and me? I won’t allow you to stay at a hotel.”
Ashton’s lips parted and he looked over at you with wide eyes.
“Mom, you can’t say no this is dad! You’ve been married before, it shouldn’t be weird for you to live together. He can sleep on the floor next to me if needed.”
You couldn’t help but giggle by Daniel trying to convince you. He sounded pretty fresh all of the sudden considering the late hours.
“I think we can make a few agreements and readjustments.” You nodded your head with a smile, feeling goosebumps appear on your arms by Daniel’s excited cheer.
You looked over at Ashton with blushed cheeks, mouthing a ‘thank you’ without Daniel noticing.
Ashton roamed in the seat and leaned his other arm forward to grab your hand, holding it carefully and looked back at Daniel who was starting to spill stories.
He promised it was going to be okay and you looked between them both with a smile that couldn’t compare to anything else.
Everything is okay.

i. first messes
Yoongi should have known better, but in his defense, he didn’t think anything this catastrophic could have happened in the two minutes he had slipped away to the bathroom.
But as he stands in the doorway leading to the kitchen, he finds at least thirteen things wrong with the picture in front of him; at least ten of which could have been prevented if he could hold his bladder better.
“Baby girl,” he starts slowly, stepping over a puddle of—is that an egg? “What happened?”
The four-year-old sits on the tiled floor, covered head to toe in a mixture of strawberries, bananas, yogurt, flour, and orange juice, with something with an uncomfortable, sticky-looking texture stuck between her fingers. Yeona points to the counter top and Yoongi turns to find the root, or at least one of the roots of the many issues: an uncovered blender and open carton of eggs.
He blinks before turning back to the child on the ground. She looks down at the messy floor—and Yoongi knows that pout like the back of his hand.
He sighs, crouching down to her level and pushing her dirty hair out of her face, “It’s okay, baby, it was an honest mistake.”
But her disappointed resolve doesn’t fade away at her father’s words, “I messed up mama’s breakfast.”
“Hey, no you didn’t,” he says, encouraging her to stand to her feet, “Do you know how many times your Uncle Jimin and Taehyung have done this before?”
That gets her laugh, the image of her uncles fumbling around a kitchen amusing. “Uncle Chim is really clumsy, dad.”
“He sure is,” Yoongi agrees, “It’s my fault, too, baby. I should have been there to help you.”
“No! You didn’t do anything wrong, daddy!” She exclaims, dark eyes going wide at Yoongi’s self-accusation.
“How about this then: I won’t blame myself if you won’t,” Yoongi extends a pinky finger, “Deal?”
Missing teeth and gums beam at him as a small pinky is linked with his. Yoongi nods, “Come on, let’s get you and the kitchen cleaned up before mom gets home, yeah?”
ii. first kisses
Yoongi would never admit it, but Yeona definitely got her possessive side from him. She was a carbon copy of her father when tired; shamelessly clingy and in need of your undivided care. Yoongi usually relished in the unabashed attention from his daughter, except when she used her pre-napping phase to stake her claim over you.
He comes home from work to find you and a six-month-old Yeona laying on the couch, and her new favorite Disney movie on the month on the television. Yoongi leans downwards to give you a kiss, but is instead met with a small, chubby hand to his lips.
He blinks his eyes open, stunned to see that his kiss was intercepted by none other than his own daughter. And that you had the audacity to find it funny.
“Oh?” He raises a dark eyebrow before tugging his lips into a smirk. He leans past her barrier, kissing your cheek with a sorry-not-sorry look in his eyes.
And Yeona goes ballistic. Her nose scrunches in an all too familiar manner, bottom lip protruding noticeably and muffled growls leaving her mouth.
She shimmies her way up your chest, grabs your face between tiny fingers, and presses a wet kiss just below your bottom lip.
Yoongi laughs wholeheartedly, but he has to hand it to her when she mimics his glare: all’s fair in love and war.
iii. first unscheduled checkup
“Okay, hyung, don’t freak out, but me and Namjoon are at the hospital with Yeona right now—don’t freak out—because there was a little incident—don’t freak out—but she’s gonna be okay, so don’t freak—”
“Tell me not to freak out one more fucking time and I’ll castrate you with my own two hands, Hoseok.”
“So you’re mad. Understandable,” Hoseok says, wincing away from the phone when Yoongi growls in response.
“You have five seconds to tell me what you two idiots did to my daughter and then you better fucking hope she’s okay, or I’ll have your heads.”
Hoseok eyes Namjoon with his bottom lip between his teeth. They were so screwed. “Funny story, actually, so, we think Yeona might be allergic to nuts.”
“Might be?”
“Yeah, so—um, actually, I’m going to let Namjoon, explain,” Hoseok hurries, handing the phone to Namjoon.
He tries to reject, but sighs when the device is shoved into his hands. Reluctantly, he brings it to his ear, taking a deep breath, but Yoongi speaks before he can, “Save it. Just text me the name of the hospital and pray I don’t murder you when I get there.”
Twenty minutes and a few run red lights later, Yoongi is bursting through the doors to the pediatric floor. He doesn’t care about the old woman at reception yelling about no running in the halls, or the other parents eyeing him for marching past the waiting room like he owned the place. His baby was in there somewhere and he was going to get to her.
“Yeo—oh, my baby,” Yoongi coos, frantic as he comes to the side of the hospital bed, stroking the girl’s face. Angry red bumps litter her neck, her cheeks are puffier than usual, and her mouth looks irritated, but Yoongi is relieved. She’s okay, his baby girl is okay.
“I’m fine, daddy,” she smiles with swollen lips, “Uncle Hoseokie ran with me all the way here when I started itchin’.”
“I know baby, daddy was just worried about you,” Yoongi nods, cradling her head with tears threatening to fall, “How do feel? Does anything hurt? Is your throat okay, love?”
She nods, cubby cheeks lifted as she beams and tells him she’s okay, “They gave me a shot though, but I was a big girl and I didn’t cry at all! Uncle Namjoonie was there, he saw!”
Yoongi smiles back and kisses her head, “My brave little girl.”
He’d forgotten that Hoseok and Namjoon were there until he hears an awkward cough from the corner of the room. “We’re sorry, we didn’t know,” Hoseok apologies, “And when she started coughing and said she couldn’t breathe we didn’t know what was wrong, and I swear I ran here as fast as I could to—”
Yoongi sighs, “It’s fine, Hoseok, I didn’t know either. We’ve had peanuts around the house forever and she’s never reacted to it.”
“The doctor said she’s allergic to tree nuts,” Namjoon speaks, “We gave her pistachio ice cream, that’s why she had a reaction to it.”
Yoongi nods, making a mental note to get rid of anything pistachio flavored within a mile radius of his house. Tree nuts were stupid anyway.
“They gave me this pretty bracelet, daddy, look!” Yeona interjects, flashing the sliver bracelet to signal her allergies. Yoongi smiles, “It’s beautiful, baby. I’ll get you one in every color to match all your outfits, okay?”
“Uh, hyung?” Hoseok calls, pulling Yoongi’s attention away from her, “You should probably call ____.”
Too caught up in his rush to the hospital, Yoongi hadn’t been thinking of anyone or anything besides his potentially dying daughter. His face pales three shades when he realizes he hasn’t so much as texted you to tell you that your child was currently hospitalized with a newfound allergy to tree nuts; something a mother should probably (definitely) know about.
“Oh no,” Yoongi shakes his head, “That’s your death sentence, not mine.”
“Is mama gonna be mad?” Yeona asks, looking up at her father.
“Not at you baby,” Yoongi shakes his head, “But say a prayer for your uncles.”
iv. first time away from home
Comeback season sucks. Performing is fun, but the awards don’t make up for the constant traveling, endless recording, and repetitive interviews; and to top off the shitshow, they’re promoting in Japan for the first time in three years, which means Yoongi doesn’t get to see you or his precious daughter for almost a month.
He’s frustrated with everyone and doesn’t have it in him to be around too many people, so the second they’re finished recording for the day, he makes a beeline for his hotel room, locks the door, chucks his phone on the desk, kicks off his shoes, and plops the fuck down on the bed.
Comeback season really fucking sucks.
Everywhere he goes, he thinks of you two. From the food to the buildings, he finds something he’d think you and Yeona would like. And he thinks of how much more he’d enjoy being here if he had you two by his side.
When he’s finally started to doze off to rid himself of missing you two too much, his phone starts vibrating, multiple text messages coming to his attention. He groans, rolling over to grab the phone. It was probably the maknaes, they’d said something about wanting to go out to dinner to celebrate their latest win, but Yoongi just wanted to sleep.
He picks up his phone, thumb already hovering over the power button to turn it off, when the notifications catch his eye. It’s in fact, not the maknaes blowing up his phone, but you, instead.
His resolve washing away, he presses his thumb to the home button to unlock it and reveal the messages. When he opens them, an immediate smile tugs at his lips.
A video of you, Holly, and his baby girl, all wearing matching outfits and smiles.
“Okay, are you ready to film the video for daddy?” you say, readjusting the angle so that Yeona can be seen. She nods excitedly, petting Holly before speaking, “We hope you’re having fun, daddy! We miss you!”
Holly barks as if to say he agrees. Yoongi’s on the brink of tears.
“Good luck with promotions!” you chime in, “We love you!”
“Daddy’s in Japan, right?” Yeona asks, looking up at you. You nod and her face lights up and she takes the phone from you, holding the camera close to her face, “Oh, bring back mochi for me and Holly, daddy!”
“What’s the magic word?” you scold lightly from off-screen.
“Please bring back strawberry mochi,” she repeats, then whispers, “It’s not really for Holly, it’s secretly all for me, but don’t tell mommy. Bye!”
Yoongi chuckles as the video comes to an end, and saves it to his camera roll. He sends you back hearts before falling back on the bed with his head to a pillow, and slips into sleep with a genuine smile on his lips.
Comeback seasons sucks, but coming home to you guys is going to feel really great.
v. first steps
Yoongi is alone with her when she takes her first steps (and you’re a little pissed that you’ve missed such an occasion due to work, but are nonetheless happy and proud of your baby girl).
A soft thud grabs Yoongi’s attention, pulling him away from his morning newspaper and drawing his attention to the baby sat on the carpet a few feet in from of him. She giggles after stumbling to the ground again, all gum. Yoongi laughs with her.
She’s been determined to learn to how to walk these past few days, and while Yoongi was in full support of her efforts, he was beginning to wonder if her bottom would bruise.
The eleven month old stares at the base of her father’s leg, eyeing the brown plush Shooky next to it. She makes grabby hands and leans forward. Yoongi glances between the babe and the pillow, smiles with a raised eyebrow, and picks it up.
He waves it in his hand, and Yeona looks up at him, eyes full, dark, and determined—challenged accepted.
She shifts to all fours, pushing her body up with her stands and steadies herself on both feet. She wobbles, nearly toppling over, but manages to lift one leg in front of the other to take a small step. She wavers, left foot in front of right; she looks to her chubby feet, then the doll in her dad’s hand.
Yoongi shakes the plush again, egging her on, and with a focused nose scrunch, Yeona takes another step, and another, and another. And a few more before she becomes wobbly at his feet, and he swoops her in his arms before she hits the carpet again.
He sits her on his lap and gives her the pillow as a reward. Yoongi kisses her cheek and she seems to clap at her own accomplishment, “That’s my baby girl.”

Searching For Hope
What would you do if I told you I was dying? I know what you're thinking: “she is being so overdramatic” or “everyone is really dying.” Well, I am dying, faster than normal, at least. It was a month before my seventeenth birthday when I lost feeling in my legs. Doctors said once again I was just being dramatic. The girl who was always bullied and sick just wanted attention, they said. I wish that was the case.
We found out I had hypothyroidism. We didn’t think it was a big deal because my sister actually has hyperthyroidism, so our family already knew about the disease. Thyroid problems are most common in middle-aged women so it was strange for an almost seventeen-year-old girl to develop the disease. We didn’t tell our family because we didn’t think it was a big deal, not to mention they were already worried about me and my health. But I did tell my boyfriend of two years. He seemed worried at first but I told him it would be fine.
It was two days before my seventeenth birthday and he broke up with me, and over a text! Who does that? He said he couldn’t be with a girl who could die within a couple years, even though I was now on a medication that would “stop” the developing issues. It was just another person doubting me. Join the club. I just prayed that everything would be okay.
I thought it would be better by now, three years later. No one could really understand what I’ve been going through. My doctors just thought I was being dramatic again. Before I was even diagnosed with hypothyroidism I had so many health issues already, mild scoliosis, no cartilage in my knees or ankles, and constant chronic pain. After I was diagnosed I was told I would be fine, that it wouldn’t have a big effect on me, when in reality everything was so much worse. My pediatrician refused to answer any of my questions or give me anything for my pain. Some days it got so bad I couldn’t walk, eat, or sleep. I didn’t want to live anymore. I felt so hopeless and questioned if I really wanted to go through all of this work just to get a couple extra years to live. I was constantly disappointed by doctors and treatments. I had nothing left. But instead of giving up I did my own research and found a doctor who specialized in thyroids right down the street from me. I couldn’t make my appointment fast enough. I could finally get real answers. The office sent me an email with orders to get blood work done before my appointment and that they would see me on Wednesday. I once again prayed that I would be okay, or even just have a slight amount of hope.
I sat in the waiting room anxious and scared, a million thoughts and questions going through my head, “Am I going to die? How did I get this disease? Why am I in so much pain? Can you please just explain to me what is really going on?” A nurse in purple scrubs came out from the back and called my name. She went over basic information and told me to wait in room B for the doctor. After about fifteen minutes of waiting, a man with slicked-back hair and a blue dress shirt walked in. He introduced himself and sat down on the little rolling chair. I watched him with hopeful eyes as he looked over my chart; it felt like my heart was going to beat out of my chest.
“So who put you on that medication?” he asked.
“My pediatrician, when I was first diagnosed. She said I needed to be on the medication or everything would get worse. Why?” I asked.
“You don’t need the medication. If anything it has done more harm to you.”
“What is that supposed to mean? Am I even sick?” I asked the doctor frustrated and confused.
“You still have hypothyroidism, but not to the point of medication. Do you know how you contracted the disease?”
“Yes! My other doctor told me that because my sister has a thyroid issues too, that it was just genetics.” The doctor started to look worried,
“No. You have Hashimoto's disease, which is much deadlier than just a genetic strand.”
I sat in the chair shocked, barely able to make out words,
”Are you saying I am going to die?”
“Oh no! Well, maybe. Right now you are healthy, go enjoy life. Take your vitamins and come in for regular check-ups. I would also suggest looking into getting a gastric surgery. It could take you out of risks of the cancers in your family, diabetes, and obesity.”
I had spent three years on that medication, blood work, constant doctors appointments for a completely wrong treatment! I sat in my car in the endocrinologist’s parking lot and cried. I called my parents and the first thing they wanted to do was sue the doctor’s office who diagnosed me wrong and gave me the wrong type of treatment, but because we live in a small town, we couldn't. It was the only doctor’s office that our insurance covered and wasn't over $30 a visit. I went home, called out of work, and just slept.
We decided to follow the doctor’s advice. Two months later, my mom and I sat in the gastric bypass surgeon’s office anxiously waiting.
“Mom he’s just going to be like all of the other doctors. He’s going to say I’m too young. I need to be on some crazy diet for two years or only eat their products for a year, then they might consider it. It feels like this whole thing is just pointless. I will never get better. I will always be sick, and not to mention I have to go back to school in a few weeks, so I won’t even be here if he needs to “watch” me or do treatments.” I flicked through the informational pamphlet just waiting to be let down yet again.
“You don’t know that. This could be the one! You just need to keep your hopes up.”
“How can I keep my hopes up when I’m in constant pain and always let down?”
“You better listen to him, even if he can’t do the sur-” my mother was cut off by the door opening and a very young man walked through the door.
“Hello, I am Doctor Wackeyed,” he said shaking our hands. “So which one of you lovely ladies is Madison?”
“I am,” I said quietly.
“I am her mother, Polly,” my mother said with a large smile.
“Well, it is very nice to meet you both. So how can I help you Madison?”
“I wanted to know what I have to do to get the gastric surgery?”
“Which surgery were you thinking of?”
“Either the reconstruction or the sleeve.”
“I’ve been looking over your chart, and you know what, we will do a two-part. We will start with the sleeve, and if you need the reconstruction we can add it after two years. How’s the second week in January?” he asked pulling out his calendar.
“Wait, what? That’s it?” I asked shocked.
“You qualify for the surgery, and your insurance completely covers it. All you need to do is go to monthly check-up appointments. We will give you a special diet catered to you; then you just need to attend two support group classes and one after surgery class.”
“Monthly checkups? She’s leaving in two weeks to go back to school. So she won’t be able to get the surgery, will she?” my mother jumped in. I knew I couldn't get it. Once again, a waste of time. I guess doctor six will be the charm. I sat in the chair trying not to overthink and cry, but my clouding thoughts were interupted by the doctor.
“What are you talking about? Of course, she can. The checkups don't have to be here: they just have to be at a certified nutritionist and they send us your data. No need to reschedule or give up. So, does the second week in January work for you, Madison?”
“Yes!” I almost yelled in excitement.
January 7th, 2019.
I will wake up in a daze, try to open my eyes and get blinded by the bright lights. My eyes will finally adjust and I will see my parents and my best friend sitting next to the hospital bed. I will feel a little pain in my abdomen as I try to sit up. The doctor will come in soon after and say the surgery was a complete success and that I will recover quickly.
I will be released two days later. Post surgery will be hard; I will follow a strict diet for five months and have to stretch and do multiple exercises every day. Although the doctor said that my recovery will be pretty fast, it will still be difficult. You try being on a liquid diet for a month and tell me if it’s easy. In the end, it will all be worth it, all of the check-ups, all the years of trying to find a doctor, the constant disappointments, everything. I will finally be okay. I will get to plan my future. I will get to look forward to things I thought that I would never see. I will get to live.

Ella was less than 24 hours old when I noticed something was wrong. Ella had just finished up eating and was snuggled in her bed right next to me when I noticed her color was off, she appeared blue and I immediately panicked. Nurses came in to assist but by the time they arrived, her color had gone back to normal. 2 hours later, Ella had just finished nursing and was snuggled in my arms as I was burping her. I looked down to kiss her sweet head and realized that once again, she was blue. I called the nurse’s station and they flew in to my room. 3 nurses grabbed Ella from my arms and began assessing her. They told me they didn’t know what was going on, that she was “dusty” and that more tests would be needed.
I wasn’t a new mom. This wasn’t my first child. I was confident in what I knew was happening. I knew that something was off, I knew that it wasn’t supposed to be like this. Something was wrong but no one could tell me what. We started the testing, I met with the pediatric doctors at the hospital, I had my awesome OBGYN there trying to help sort pieces together, I had my parents (who were pediatricians at the time) back in California trying to help figure out exactly what was going on. It wasn’t what or how I pictured the first few days of my sweet girl’s life to be. I remember when the pediatric doctor came in to do her initial checkup on Ella, she was making notes as all doctors do. I was hovering, I was being me, the mom who wants all the details and wants to know exactly what was going on. I told her I didn’t want my daughter’s chart to be a secret and that I wanted to know everything she was writing down in her chart. She told me there were some genetic markers she saw on my sweet baby and that Ella’s new pediatrician would follow up with what comes next.
Genetic markers. I, of course freaked out. I started googling the genetic markers that were listed in Ella’s chart and I started praying. I was thankful my sweet girl was resting peacefully in my arms but I was fearful of what was ahead. Doctors ran all the tests they could and sent us home. I remember tears flowing as I asked the nurse what to do if my baby turned blue while at home. She showed me how to do the Heimlich on my newborn and off we went.
I was terrified going home, alone, with this baby. Days turned in to weeks and Ella continued to struggle, I continued to break down. Ella would continue to choke with every single feeding. At 5 days old, I walked in to her doctor’s office and demanded answers. Her pediatrician at the time, assured me my baby was just fine. She said I should be grateful that I have an “easy baby”, that she was just a lazy eater and a super chill baby. I was in that doctor’s office every week for the first two months of my baby’s life. Bloody diaper rashes that wouldn’t heal, colicky baby who wouldn’t sooth, baby who ate around the clock (literally every hour), a baby who would fall asleep on me while feeding her only to wake an hour later starving and a mama who was tired, real tired.
Around two months is when things took a turn for the worse. Ella was miserable and so was I. I am a nursing mama, have been with all 3 of my kiddos. I wouldn’t say I was a pro, but I absolutely knew what I was doing and knew how to handle the hardships that come with nursing. But this time was different. I was loosing my milk. My baby was hungry, I could tell she wasn’t getting enough milk which caused her to be super fussy. So we started giving her some formula. I did my best to up my supply, I took all the teas and faithfully pumped after every feeding. With every bottle we gave her, the choking got worse. I remember a specific time Matt was feeding Ella a bottle and she literally stopped breathing. She was turning blue as he threw her in my arms. Terror filled both our eyes. Something was absolutely wrong but we didn’t know what.
A wonderful lactation consultant from the hospital finally pointed us in the right direction. She was the one who diagnosed Ella with a Posterior Tongue Tie and sent me home with a plan. Thanks to the wonderful world of facebook, I met a tongue tie expert who happened to be located in Bend and met with her that evening. I remember sitting on the sofa with her. I cried and she listened. For the first time in two months, someone heard me. She acknowledged my concerns and she sympathized with my mama heart. She understood the struggles we were facing and she helped me make a plan. Ella’s PTT procedure was scheduled for that very week. Once home, I was filled with hope even though I was told it would be a slow process of healing for Ella. Weeks went on and the choking continued. My milk returned, my baby began sleeping more, she was finally happy again and she was able to nurse. The procedure for her tie absolutely helped Ella but didn’t solve all our problems. She no longer turned blue during feedings which made feeding time less terrifying, but her choking continued which unfortunately just became a way of life for us. We started seeing a new doctor and started pressing in for more answers.
Ella quickly began falling off the charts. Okay, now let me just start by saying yes, I know that all children grow and develop at their own rate. I know charts are horrible and absolutely discourage moms and do more bad then they do good. I understand that kids have a range for when they start doing things and I know that range isn’t noted on most charts. I hear ya folks. Believe me, I have heard everyone else’s opinion on my sweet girl, but this was different. It wasn’t that Ella couldn’t hold her head up at the 4 months old, it was that she was floppy and loose and couldn’t fully support her head at all. It wasn’t that I was feeding my baby too much but yet my baby was 20 pounds at 4 months old. It wasn’t that I didn’t love the fact that my baby slept more than the average 4 month old, but it was hard to understand why she needed so much sleep. It wasn’t that she couldn’t stand up at a certain age, it was that she couldn’t bear weight on her legs. It wasn’t that she just preferred to not be on her belly for tummy time, it was that she would cry with sheer terror when she was placed on her tummy. It wasn’t just that my baby was just super fussy, it was the fact that I, her mother, could not soothe her when she became overstimulated. So when she started falling off the charts in regards to her developmental milestones, I knew something else was going on.
It was then my awesome lactation consultant who became a dear friend of mine (because I am a very loyal gal, if you are with me in my ditches, you will forever have my love whether you want it or not) suggested I call Alyce Hatch. Alyce Hatch is a local organization that helps families with children with special needs. I made an appointment that day and Ella was evaluated soon after. I remember sitting in the waiting room at Alyce Hatch. Ella was asleep in her car seat with a car seat cover on. I spoke with the Therapists evaluating Ella and told them her story. You have to qualify for early intervention therapy and as I sat with these ladies, I realized they understood more of Ella’s story then I did. I held back tears as I shared with them the frustration I had with Ella’s journey up to that point. They nodded, they listened, they passed the tissues my way as I needed them.
Ella woke from her nap and I uncovered her. The Physical Therapist who was doing the evaluation looked to me and said “has anyone ever mentioned hypotonia to you?” Of course no one ever had. She explained to me that my baby has low muscle tone. That her choking happened because while sucking, her muscles became weak and would give up, that is when she would choke. She told me that is why she hated tummy time, because holding her head up was too much work for her, her muscles were soft and too relaxed. This is why she would sleep all night and take 3-4 long naps every day, she was tired. Her body required more sleep because it took her more work to do the simplest things. She wasn’t comfortable in her own skin and therefor, when she was in overwhelming situations (such as a party, or an airport, or at a friend’s house) she would just scream. Nothing could soothe her, not even me. Finally! Someone understood. Someone had some answers.
Hypotonia means low muscle tone. She has had it since birth and she will have it for the rest of her life. She will not outgrow hypotonia but she can strengthen the muscles she has to make it less hard on her in the future. Ella’s hypotonia makes everyday movements difficult and exhausting. Her low tone shows up when she wouldn’t tolerate tummy time, when she refused to crawl, when she started walking and now as she is starting to talk. Hypotonia isn’t a diagnoses on its own, it usually is a symptom of a diagnosis. There are so many chromosome abnormalities out there, to test for them all is not possible. Some kids grow up having hypotonia and never knowing the underlining medical issue while others have diagnoses happen as they grow. To some, Ella looks and acts like a normal toddler, of course with delays but nothing more. No one sees the struggles Ella has, but I do. No one sees how hard she works to do the simplest things, but I do. No one sees how many times she has to fall before she gets back up, but I do. Ella, we celebrate your strength, we celebrate every inchstone you have accomplished. We see how hard you work, I know the internal fight you have when you developmentally want to try something new yet your body simply won’t do it. You are brave, you are strong, you are determined to do the hard things. You inspire me, your daddy and your brother and sister.
Ella went on to have torticollis, rapid weight gain, an MRI to check her brain, an MRI to rule out Hydrocephalus, blood test after blood test to rule our chromosome abnormalities, walking delays / issues and speech delays. And here we are, two years later. Ella is still struggling but she is also so much stronger then she once was. I know there are delays, I can see and feel the differences in our sweet girl and other toddlers her age. I feel the difference every time I go shoe shopping for Ella, when typical shoes don’t fit the orthotic inserts she needs to support her core so she can have better stability. I feel the difference when Ella’s new Physical Therapist starts asking me the questions, the dreaded questions, about what tests have been done on Ella because hypotonia, gross motor delays and speech delays usually mean something else is going on. I see the difference every time we are at the playground and Ella can’t physically do something without my help, or when she falls and literally cannot get herself out of the position she fell in. I see the differences but I also see her strength. I see her get right back up after she falls. I see her try to climb a ladder because her brother just did it. I see her little leg lift up on her own when she comes to a curb because all she wants to do is step up on that curb without needing my help. I see her try. I see her fail and I see her try again.
What I have learned the first two years of Ella’s life is that we, both her and I, can do the hard things. What terrified me once, no longer terrifies me. Ella will conquer all things, she will do the things no one thought she could, she will figure out a way to be exactly who she wants to be. Ella teaches me how to live in the moment, be thankful and grateful for what you have today, in this moment. She teaches me to never give up, even when you fail you can try again. She has taught me to just sit in the moment and be okay with exactly where you are even if others don’t understand. I also learned through Ella’s life, that being weak is okay. I was weak for the first year of Ella’s life, so very very very weak. But guess what? Through that weakness breakthrough came, God showed up in mighty ways. I was expecting it, because I was desperate for it. When I surrendered it all to Him, when I said I simply cannot do this without His help, that is when healing happened. Not only for me, but I believe that is when it happened for Ella as well.

Jancys first time where they're both virgins but Nancys more confident whereas Jonathan is a trembling mess☺
A/N: Sorry this took so long, but it’s my first time writing smut. So it might be garbage. So, to fulfill the prompt this is a slight-AU set a couple of weeks after the main events of S1, ie during the timeskip. Also this is smut but not just smut and it takes awhile to get there.
Also on Ao3 and FFNet.
NSFW, ofc.
He’s laying in bed, staring at the ceiling, listening to New Order and trying to work out what his life is. Will’s back but he’s not the same. Alternate dimensions exists. Monsters are real. The government is evil. And Nancy Wheeler makes him feel funny things. Suddenly there’s a knock on the front door. Something as mundane as that makes him tense up nowadays. He slowly gets up to answer since he’s the only one home. His mom and Will is at another check up at the hospital.
”Hi.”
It’s her. He’s slightly taken aback, he didn’t expect to see her. They haven’t talked much since that night. That night they fought a monster, that night he got his brother back. That night they almost kissed. He didn’t go back to school right away, staying home to care for his brother that first week before his mom eventually sent him off, saying that at least he needed to return to some normalcy. Whatever normalcy could be now, after all. Nancy has talked to him a couple of times in school. Asking how Will’s doing, how he’s doing. He’s answered. Asked about how she was doing. She’d looked lonely. No Barb by her side, and to his surprise no Steve either. He’d seen her talking with him at her locker once, they’d seemed amicable, friendly. But for the most part he’d seen her walk the halls alone. He wanted to approach her, but he didn’t know how to. Didn’t know if she wanted it. The few times they talked it had always been she who had sought out him. And now she was here, on his doorstep.
”Hey,” he answers after a second when he realizes he’s just stared at her without saying anything. She’s smiling shyly and got her hair in a ponytail. The autumn sun shines behind her. She’s mesmerizing.
”Can I come in?”
”Oh! Yeah, yeah, of course, sorry,” he stumbles over his words and steps aside so she can enter.
He takes her coat, she thanks him and looks around.
”House looks better,” she says after taking in the wallpaper and the fixed hole in the wall.”
”Yeah, Hopper helped me fix it up.”
She nods.
”Home alone?”
”Mom took Will to the hospital for a checkup,” he informs her.
”Oh. How is he doing?”
The instinctive response is to say he’s fine, but since it’s Nancy he thinks twice about it. They cut themselves open together. He guesses he can be honest with her.
”I don’t know, I worry… sometimes he seems fine, other times… it’s like he’s different. Maybe things just can’t go back to the way they were.”
”I’m sorry,” she says and looks straight into his eyes for what feels like a long time. ”You might be right about that… nothing can go back to the way it was,” she continues.
”How are you?” He asks. She looks to be actually thinking about it, just like him preparing an actual honest reply to the question most people answered automatically.
”I uh… not good, to be honest. Barb’s dead. She’s dead and no one knows, not even her parents and I can’t tell them what happened because the government covered it up. Plus I worry about Mike. And I… we know all this stuff now, you know. That we can’t tell anyone about. And I just keep thinking… is it over? Can it really be over? I mean, all this stuff is still just… out there… I don’t know, I’m rambling, I just… it’s been so lonely without Barb, but I feel like… we… went through it together, we know, we… we can talk, right?”
”Yeah, of course,” he immediately answers.
”Good,” she flashes a smile briefly. ”Makes me feel less lonely.”
”I thought Steve…” he begins, carefully.
”Oh… Steve and I… yeah that’s over.”
”Oh,” he mirrors her without thinking.
”Yeah I mean, he turned out to be a good guy in the end, y’know…”
”Definitely.”
”But it’s not… what I want. We’re still friends, kind of, but. Think I realized some stuff about myself through all this.”
He nods and gestures for her to sit down on the couch when he suddenly realizes they’ve been standing awkwardly this whole time. He sits down next to her and urges for her to continue.
”Steve was just a brief… I don’t know. He was popular. A junior. In with the cool kids. It was something I thought I wanted. Before. But that night… the night Barb disappeared… do you know what the last thing she said to me was?”
He shakes his head.
”She said ’this isn’t you’. I brushed her off and went back upstairs. But it was uncomfortable, with Steve and I couldn’t get her words out of my head. It felt like I was doing it just to… I don’t know, to prove something to myself. To get some status. So I stopped. Before anything you know… happened. Steve was surprisingly okay with it. I mean, he was disappointed and frustrated but… so I went home.”
”I… uh, I’m sorry about the pictures.”
”You’ve already apologized for that,” she smiles.
”Yeah but uh, I wanted to say sorry again.”
”Well, thanks. But you didn’t have to, I forgave you the first time. I could tell you really meant it.”
”Yeah.”
”I can’t sleep,” she blurts out.
”Me neither,” he confesses.
”I get nightmares. About… that place. About Barb.”
”I dream that Will is gone again. I have to get up and check on him every time when I wake up from one.”
She nods.
”Mike came into my room last night and shook me awake. I was screaming.”
He nods.
”Your name, apparently. He said I was screaming for you.”
He looks up, surprised.
”Oh.”
”My nightmare is that I’m running around in that place but can’t find your voice. I try to remember how it felt, when you pulled me out of the tree trunk. When you held me. It felt safe.”
He doesn’t know what to say to that. He feels like he has to do something though, so he puts a tentative hand on her knee, hoping to convey support. That he wants her to always feel safe. She smiles slightly, mumbles ”thanks” and puts her hand on top of his. Slowly she turns it around so his palm faces up. Her fingers brush against the now smaller bandage that covers the scar. She has the same on her scarred hand. He’s reminded of that night again. Of the electricity between them in that moment. Of what he was just about to do when Steve banged on the door.
Apparently so is she because she looks up and asks him.
”That night… before Steve came. What were you going to say? When you said my name.”
He looks at her and swallows hard. What should he say? What could he say? What would he even say? It wasn’t exactly words that had been forming in his head then, when he’d said her name. More of an action. She stares at him with big beautiful eyes now like she did then. Should he just…? For a second her gaze drops down to his lips and then back up to his eyes. He feels like he has an inkling of what she’s saying, he doesn’t need a photograph to analyze this. Screw it.
He leans in and kisses her. Her lips are soft and she makes a small surprised noise but doesn’t pull away. The opposite, in fact. When the kiss ends he looks at her and she looks at him and for a split-second it feels like his entire existence hangs in the balance. Then she kisses him, pressing their lips together tight and grasping his cheek, pulling him closer. A dam bursts inside of him then, he kisses her back with the same eagerness. He wants every kiss to last forever, their lips only come apart when they both need air in their lungs before coming together again.
Time stands still so he as no idea for how long they’ve made out when she pulls away slightly from his lips and gives him a look. She looks assured. There’s a special glimmer in her eyes and a small smile at the corner of her lips.
”Jonathan,” she breathes out.
”Nance,” he mumbles.
”Let’s go to your room.”
Words betray him so he nods and stands up, she stands with him and the kisses continue as he backs down the hall the familiar way to his room, she presses him on forward. When they get close he hears music and realizes he forgot to turn off New Order. He can neither think or walk straight, he’s only aware of Nancy, her hands on his shirt collar, her lips on his. She must’ve kicked his door shut with her foot because her hands haven’t left him. He’s walking backwards until the back of his legs hits his bed and Nancy gently pushes him down on the covers before she herself follows on top of him.
His hands grips her sides as she straddles him. She sinks her head down and their mouths crash together again. Her hands are in his hair and his travel up her back. She must surely feel him now against her thigh, he thinks because he’s definitely weary aware of the feel of her against him there. Yep, she must, he decides as a soft whimper escapes her lips when she rolls her hips against him. Her hands leave his hair to fiddles with the buttons on his shirt.
”Nance,” he gets out between kisses.
”Yes?” She murmurs before pressing their lips together again.
”Are you sure about this?” He asks. He has no idea what he’s doing he just knows he doesn’t want to stop despite that. But he has to know that she’s thinking more straight than he is currently. That she won’t regret whatever will happen.
”Yes,” she breathes out before kissing him again. ”Are you?” She then asks.
He nods and she’s all over him again, finishing unbuttoning his shirt she adjusts herself slightly and they both sit up somewhat so she can pull it off him. His bare torso makes him feel a bit self-conscious but when she looks down at his chest she bites down on her lip somewhat and her hands play over his chest before she leans in and kisses him again. They break apart and she pushes him down against the covers again. Then she pulls her top off. Her bra soon follows. She’s breathtaking.
”You’re so beautiful,” he manages to get out.
She smiles slightly and leans down against him. She takes his arms and places his hands on her chest. His breath hitches as he gently cups her breasts and her tongue finds his again. Just when he’s found himself with this new development her hand travels down and grasps him through his jeans. She’s got a playful smile and thankfully some sort of autopilot takes over and he lifts himself up slightly when she’s pulled the zipper down so his jeans can come off when she tugs at them. It seems a contortionist’s nightmare but she then manages to remove her own too with barely any adjustment of her position on top of him. She’s just in her panties when she frees him from his boxers.
He’s not proud of the moan that escapes him when her hand grasps his hard cock, but she just keeps that sly smile on her face and watches him with that glint in her eyes as she strokes him. Her other hand goes inside her panties and soon she moans with him. She takes one of his hands and moves it there. He can feel how wet she is as hes teers his fingers against herself. She shuts her eyes and goes up an octave when she steers his fingers to her clit. After awhile she pulls her panties down and lift herself up slightly. He suddenly realizes.
”I… don’t have a condom.”
”It’s okay, I’m on the pill,” she says, eyes darting from his cock to his eyes. ”I mean, if you’e okay with it… do you want to stop?”
”No,” he breathes out. He doesn’t want to stop. He’s pretty sure he couldn’t stop even if he wanted to. Not when Nancy is naked on top of him and looking at him like that. ”Do you want to stop?” He asks, to make sure.
”Never,” she answers. He nods.
She steers him inside of her and slowly, slowly, sinks down on him. She bites her lip in a futile attempt to prevent a moan from escaping. He’s completely transfixed by the sight of her as the sensation of her enveloping him takes over. He holds her as she slowly starts rocking her hips against him. Soon they fall into a rhythm and it feels like everything in the world is in complete sync, because the world is just the two of them, their bodies, their moans. Her skin against his. Her hands on his chest, his hands on her hips, her lips against his. His throbbing cock inside her wet pussy.
The sensation builds as she quickens the pace slightly. She starts to moan his name and the light tones her voice reaches and the way she can’t seem to make it to the end of the three syllable word somehow makes it the best thing he’s ever heard. Soon he feels a familiar but yet unfamiliar feeling, he can feel he’s close to the edge but it’s a strange, wonderful sensation getting there not by himself but through someone else, through her.
”N-nance,” he manages. ”I’m gonna…” he trails off, just like her incapable of putting more than a few syllables together at once in this moment. She nods and again he catches a special glimmer in her eye that he’ll remember forever. Instead of slowing down she increases the pace even more. Everything heightens. He shudders and lets out an incoherent murmur as he comes inside of her. The feeling is unbelievable, he’s sure his whole body would jerk and twitch if not for her sitting on top of him with her hands pressing down on his chest.
She collapses against him and his cock slides out of her. She buries her face in the crook of his neck and his arms go around her back, holding her close as they just lay there breathing for awhile. She presses a kiss against his shoulder, to his collarbone, to his cheek, then shifts so she’s laying more on her side, in his arms, with her head on his shoulder.
”That was amazing,” she says.
”Yeah.”
They lay in silence for awhile, but it doesn’t feel uncomfortable. He runs his fingers through her hair. New Order is still playing and she drums her fingers against his chest, tapping out the beat.
”I like you,” she simply states.
”I like you a lot,” he reciprocates.
”Me too. A lot, I mean,” she counters, looking up at him and pressing another kiss to his cheek before settling down again.
The sound of the front door opening and closing signals the end of their own private reprieve.
”Jonathan, we’re home! Jonathan?” His mother calls out.
It sends them both scrambling for their clothes. They hastily get dressed, Nancy fixes her hair and then smooths down the back of his while he turns off New Order. He opens his bedroom door and ventures out with Nancy behind him. He was prepared to have an extremely awkward encounter but prayed that it wouldn’t be that obvious what they’ve been doing.
”Hey, mom,” he says.
”Oh, hey,” she begins as she halts her step, she was heading right towards his bedroom. ”Hi,” she continues, looking with surprise at Nancy. ”I didn’t know you were coming over, it’s lovely to see you.”
”Hi, yeah I just… thought I’d pop by. Nice to see you too, Mrs. Byers,” Nancy answers and smiles gently. He avoids his mother’s gaze as she looks between them both.
”How did it go?” He thinks to ask and starts to move again, feeling like it could somehow maybe be less awkward if they moved away from his bedroom.
”Oh, you know how it is. Not much to tell. They’re hoping the coughing will go away eventually. But we’ll have to keep checking in, they’re thinking he might need an inhalor eventually if it doesn’t go away,” his mom relates as they walk out towards the living room.
He nods.
”Hey buddy, how are you feeling?” He asks Will who’s sat down in the couch turning on the TV.
”Okay,” he answers before looking curiously at Nancy. ”Hey, Nancy.”
”Hey, Will,” she answers. ”Glad to see you doing better,” she adds.
”Thanks,” his little brother answers and for a second looks from Nancy to him, giving him a look he knows means he’ll have a lot of questions about this later.
”Will you be staying for dinner, sweetie?” His mom turns to Nancy.
”Oh,” she looks between his mom and him, seemingly searching for the appropriate answer. He knows what he wants it to be, he wants her to be around as much as possible, and hopes he can convey that with a look. ”I don’t want to impose…” Nancy continues.
”Nonsense, we’d be happy to have you!” His mom answers.
”Oh, well in that case… sure, I’d love to,” Nancy smiles.
She looks at him and he feels himself smiling back at her.

EPISODE 8
July 13, 11:35 AM
I was halfway to the hospital when I realized that I should have probably called and see if dr. Gramm is even at work today. I haven’t thought about it before because I’m used to her always being there. But I’ve called and it turns out that she’s not there because she’s a human, too, and that currently, she’s on vacation, so I don’t even bother going there. I wonder where she went. I bet somewhere exotic, somewhere far away from here, to escape her job for a second. I can’t imagine being a surgeon. Hats off to the people who can handle the pressure of being responsible for other people’s lives. I want to be a doctor myself, but being a dentist is barely similar to what surgeons do. It’s very unlikely for someone to die after treating their cavities.
I figured that if I walk around the hospital for a while then I’ll bump into someone and the story with the Alley Woman would repeat itself, but I’ve been sitting here, in a park nearby for about twenty minutes now, and no one has come up to me yet. Bummer, I’ll have to get more creative.
I know telling Nick and Bobbie would be a smart thing to do now. Well, not now, a long time ago, but it got to the point where I’m too embarrassed or too proud, I don’t know. But what do I want to prove? That I can handle my problems myself, that I don’t need anybody’s help? But what does it prove, exactly? That I’m being a child, I guess. Grow up, Ian.
Nicole would probably suggest drawing a timeline or something similar that would help me visualize all the events chronologically. She’s very practical. But that’s kind of what my journal is, isn’t it? Keeping track of everything and making sure I don’t mix up anything. Bobbie would tell me to stop thinking so much, take it easy and do some deep yoga breathing. But I’ve been breathing, Bobbie, trust me. If that was the case, I think I would have solved it by now.
They wanted to take me to the beach this morning, but I told them I was having a checkup with my doctor and that I couldn’t go with them. How long would it take if I were actually having a checkup right now? Is it safe to go back home already? I wouldn’t like to be caught lying. We’re meeting later at Bobbie’s again. How are the three of us not fed up with each other yet? We hang out too often.
02:37 PM
Everyone knows that if I get invited to someone’s house, there’s a 95% chance that I’m wearing sweats. I need to be comfortable, and jeans are far from comfortable. I’m leaving in two hours but I can’t find anything that doesn’t stink. No point in doing laundry now, it’s not going to dry out on time anyway. No, it’s probably better if I do it now, I wouldn’t have anything to wear tomorrow.
02:50 PM
A light grey plain t-shirt, and burgundy shorts. That’s what I was wearing that night. I found it in the basement as I was emptying the dryer. Great, so I do have something clean, I thought. Yes, and no. The shorts were indeed clean, but when I saw the t-shirt I got goosebumps. I hadn’t noticed at first, but after I took it upstairs and saw it in daylight I spotted red stains around the chest area. But how? The woman told me she hadn’t seen me bleed that much. And it looks like there were quite a lot of them. Of course, it’s been washed, so they’re barely visible now but not completely gone.
Now when I think about it they kind of look like fingerprints. Yeah, definitely, especially on the right site. I swear if I look close enough I can see a whole handprint. But if I hadn’t bled then where did it come from?
03:15 PM
Nora! Of course. She had blood on her hands! Literally. And then she pushed me because she was frustrated with me. That’s how I got it all over me.
What’s weird is that my parents didn’t confront me about it. Why wouldn’t they? They must have known that there wasn’t much bleeding happening on my part. Surely, the doctors had told them. Weren’t they suspicious at all?
04:11 PM
“Mom, I took out clothes from the dryer, I left your stuff on the sofa,” I tried smoothly starting the topic.
“Thanks, and is your shirt clean finally? I washed it three times already, but I honestly don’t think it can be saved.” Why is she so casual about it? I mean, I’m glad she is, but she just sounds like it’s so obvious that my shirt was covered in blood.
“Yeah, no, not really, I think I’m gonna have to throw it away. Shame, I liked that shirt. Especially unfair because I lost only a little blood, and yet it was all over it.”
“Yeah, the other person wasn’t that lucky, I suppose,” she replied.
“What?”
“Surely, you must have fought back, right? Whoever did this to you bled a little more than you did,” she explained. She seemed too neutral about it.
“Oh, yeah, for sure, that’s probably what happened,” I answered. But no I didn’t! Can you even imagine me in a fight? Because I can’t. And I don’t want to. I’m not sure if I could punch somebody once, not to say beat someone up so hard that they bleed. No way I fought back! I’m not sure how I feel about my mother liking the idea of me being so violent, but I’m glad she doesn’t ask questions. Maybe she thinks I’ll tell her what happened myself. Yeah, that’s not happening.

So this is weird. Not exactly sure how this notebook works but it looks really cool. I even set it up on my phone. Tots want to transfer all the lists from notes to this on my phone. So today. Too many thoughts unsure where to start. So this is gonna be a ramble.
I'm watching Chopped right now. Cant pay attention to it. I try to watch and I cant focus. No idea whats cooking. No idea about the basket ingredients. My head cant focus on the show. I keep thinking.
Good sleep last night. Woke up at 6:30 to begin my day. So enjoying waking up and thinking. It's the best thing ever. I havent been able to this in so long, its like my brain just turned on. Papa says I just gave myself permission to do other things. 4 years of just focusing on colitis and tv and now its like the world has opened new opportunities.
Tots feel bad for not formatting this. Or being articulate. So scatter brained. BRAIN TURN OFF!!!! Or at least calm down.
Kinda feel like its fine though. My writing is showing how im thinking. Makes me feel cool. ;)
This will be great on a blog. I have so many plans for recording this trip. Excited.
Ok so back to today. Woke up feeling good.
Hoping not to repeat anything from this entry to another entry.
Ok, ok. Focus. Now I want guddo to see what she thinks about this journal. She always stole my journal when I was small and said it was boring. Like just a list of events. No emotion or feelings or anything juicy. Thinking this is a better attempt.
Ok, really. The point is to focus on today. Feeling like I should do something artistic and focus on the whole transplant thing if its gonna be on a blog. Nah. This is better.
Woke up happy. I started reading this MIT tech magazine. So interesting. Wanting to start reading about advancements in tech. and to read research articles.
Then, I started looking up things for guddo. So happy her application deadline isn't passed. Tots freaked out the other day that all deadlines are gone.
Really wanting to color right now. Its actually really soothing. Gotta finish the entry though.
Pass order was perfect today. Got out at noon.
Then went to the best massage ever. You got no idea. My masseur is an angel. (love the background noise of tv) She had perfect pressure, perfectly warm hands. Perfectly hot hot stones. Hehe. Hot hot. Ive had several massages, but this is the best one yet. Ive never moaned in my life but I did today. I was so afraid that I was making it awkward.
I keep peeing. WHY? Every freaking 20 minutes! :(
Yeah im gonna say everything. No barriers. No embarrassment. Having people look at your butt for the last four years because of colitis.
By the way, the relaxation room before and after a massage is something everyone should do. It's so calming. You should definitely arrive early enough to get 30 minutes in the relaxation room before your massage. It's great being surrounded by people, all on comfy couches, enjoying soft music. So calming. Therapeutic.
Post massage.
Ok, so now I want to start this on a blog and make it public for people to read daily if they're interested. But my mom says I jinx things when I do that. I'll talk to Guddo, Mama, and Papa and analyze their opinions. Probs gonna do it anyway. I want to keep my friends updated but I also want to make it public and see if I can be popular. (my dad is taking a pic of me right now for the family) So vain, I know. But I think it's ok. Might just skip asking everyone.
My daddy's picture
Gotta pee again. Ugh. So frustrating.
This is taking so much longer than expected but I'm really enjoying it.
Loving my life.
Ok, after massage. Went back to apartment (dad has an apartment nearby to get to nih when I get discharged from hospital and need to come stay in area for biweekly checkups) Opened packages! Got my new disney jacket, cherry blossom hand sanitizers, fan for hospital. Then, just changed and got ready to go. I keep wanting to work on my LEGO castle but with always doing something everyday I don't get time to do things at the apartment. T_T
So back to hospital we go. Currently hooked up to IV pole thingy. 12-6 is basically the only time I'm unhooked when I can be everyday (some days I have extra medications so the schedule changes some times.
Almost forgot to mention pizza. Right after leaving the hospital, I convinced Papa to go to &pizza. Half the fun of eating is eating with another person.
So ive been without food for the last 5 weeks. Docs wanted to do a bowl rest where nothing goes through mouth except meds and water necessary to take them. For some days now I've been allowed to slowly add clear liquids. Basically one item a day, slowly increasing amount of liquids everyday while reducing my high dose steroids every few days. Clear liquids includes tea, chicken broth, italian ice, etc.
Back to &pizza. We took lots of videos of the process. Such a good smell in the restaurant. So many toppings. I recorded the people there, my dad ordering, the food. Videos are great ways to save memories. While my dad ate, I had some sweet tea and cherry italian fruit ice. It was so much fun to just take him out and eat together after so long.
Btw, I was readmitted to hospital 5 weeks ago for gvhd of the gut. More on that later.
My dad hated the pizza but I think he enjoyed the experience. And then, of course he complained about the bad food afterwards and how I owe him another pizza. Blah blah blah.
Ok, back in hospital now. Getting tired. Think im gonna stop for today. Anything I forgot to mention, sorry. Going to Tumblr now, starting new blog, posting on FB, bypassing parents (though I did ask my dad about it). Peace out.

Less than human 7 part A
7 part A ----- Listen to this to make everything smoother. Repeat it if it ends before you reach the end. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xMaZalLP1uQ If the link doesn't work, search "lullaby" - Tale of Two Sisters. ------ Hospitals always scared me. Ever since I was a little kid. I never had a real reason other than the scary movies I'd watch. But I think everyone is afraid of them in some way. Although that fear doesn't always make sense. Now I believe I have a real reason. Everything was either white or blue. If it was my eyesight or the actual room, I couldn't tell. We were alone in the hospital room. This isn't what I imagined this would be like at all. Ai was breathing heavily while squeezing my hand. Nurses came in and out of the room. They got Ai in a hospital gown and gave her an epidural. I doubt it did much. "It hurts too bad." She was on the verge of tears. "It's okay. Calm down, it'll be over soon." "ITS BEEN GOING ON FOREVER!!!" A nurse came in and started asking questions. We never went to any checkups, so that's probably why. I always tried to convince her to go, but each time I did she would make it out like i was trying to make her get an abortion. The only way we knew it was a boy was because she talked to her friend that's in nursing. "Alright. Just relax. The doctor is on his way." All I could do was focus on the details of Ai's face. She was somehow red and pale at the same time. Sweat glossed her skin. Her brown hair was sticking to the sides of her face. God, she looks awful. I wanted to say something. Anything. But there wasn't anything that would make her feel better. Finally, the doctor came in and started working. It seemed like time could play tricks suddenly. Seconds stretched onto minutes. Minutes turned into half an hour. Slowly but surely, she was progressing. Everything was going by so slowly, I thought I'd die in that hospital room before he was born. Ai kept squeezing my hand to the point where I could barely feel it. "Almost there." She grabbed onto me as tightly as she could. One last scream, then... There he was. That's when I saw little Toshio for the first time. He was so small... He wasn't crying, moving, or even breathing. His face had a blue tint to it. My son looked like a doll. Immediately they took him out of the room to do some testing. All I could do was stare at the door they failed to shut behind them. Ai sat up and looked at me. We were completely alone. All the energy left with the baby. Empty. That's all I could feel. Emptiness. Even with Ai there. I felt lonely. "What does he look like?" She breathily said. I didn't know what to tell her. I shook my head, remembering the look on his face. "Rokuro?" "He's so small." I told her. She crossed her arms. "What's that supposed to mean? Of course he's small, he's a baby." "No. He's really small." She looked at me confused. "He wasn't moving a-and I don't think he's breathing." I said. Ai suddenly became alert. She was in so much shock that she said more than words ever could. Nothing. The doctor came in moments later. Before he could say anything, she asks "Is he dead?" He shakes his head. "No, but he's extremely underweight. Also his lungs aren't fully developed a-" "So he won't make it?" Ai asked rudely. "There is a probability." He said rather harshly. "He needs to stay here for at least a few days so we can figure out the complications." He tried to sound polite, but something told me he was tired and just wanted to go home. How could someone be like that? Especially at times like this. "You mean that my son is going to stay here while I go back home and pretend like nothing happened?!" I put my hand on her shoulder. She quickly brushed it off. "You don't have to go home. I'll leave you be." He left the room without another word. Only 2 days later, he came home. The doctor said we needed to be extremely careful with him. Ai was more upset than anything. She was upset about the fact she 'wasted time carrying him.' ...until she held him. She looked at him and all the guilt rose up to the surface. He only weighed 1.3 kilograms (3 pounds 4 ounces). He was so small. She held him closer to her body. Toshio was constantly crying. His voice was so fragile and weak that it sounded kind of like an old, worn out music box. I could barely hear him. I knew it was because of the meth. Surprisingly, they didn't seem to notice. Personally, I blame the doctor. He obviously just wanted to retire soon. He didn't care, he just wanted the money. And I'm sure that getting the police involved will make things complicated. We went home. Nothing felt the same. Little Toshio changed everything for us. In a good way, I think. Ai said that she was tired because of the epidural. Although that excuse didn't make much sense since that was days ago, I just let her sleep. It gave me time alone with my son. Days passed by. I constantly had to check on Toshio. When I was with him, I felt better. All that time getting beat on was worth it. Now I understood the little things my mom used to do. Like trying to get involved with everything I did in school and so on. Although that was years away, I knew I was going to be like that. Having to go to work for a few hours already made me feel guilty. Ai's sister came around a lot more. Apparently her and Ai weren't mad at each other anymore. Sadako mainly talked to me about things that didn't matter. For example, she got a lot of things in her mother's will but Ai got nothing. Ai didn't know about that. I wasn't going to bring it up. Sadako was very helpful towards us. Without her, I think Ai would've been hitting him by now. I didn't mind her. Sadako flirted with me on and off though... My only concern was if Ai would walk in and think something was going on. That didn't matter. I was going to leave her soon. Right? How do I start this? I should just go. Pack everything while she's sleeping and just go for it. She's not stupid. She would notice that then probably beat me. Ai hasn't been giving Toshio enough attention in my book. It's almost like her sister is the mother. All Ai does is usually done after Sadako brings it up. Ai was taking a shower now. That woman can take the longest showers known to mankind. I held Toshio, who was crying like always. Sadako was sitting on the arm of my chair, staring down at him. Toshio was settling down. He was tired. His aunt on the other hand was scaring me. Please don't touch me. What if Ai walked in the moment you tried something? She'd say I was trying to fuck you. "Um... Rokuro?" Sadako said my name like she was scared to say it. "Sorry if this is rude, but how did you get that around your neck?" She was referring to a mark left there by Ai. A huge ring around my neck to show her frustrations. I didn't know how to answer that. "I guess I wear my ties too tight." That was a stupid excuse. She looked at my wrists. "What about those?" Sadako actually looked concerned... I never had to make excuses like this before. No one ever asked. "I can't remember." She held onto my arm. I pulled back in a way that was firm but not rude. "I heard you were into music." Trying to get off the subject made me less nervous. But I could tell she was going to bring it up again. "Yeah." I answered somewhat shyly. It's been so long since anyone's asked me about myself. "Maybe you should sing to him. It might calm him down." She smiled sweetly. "Y-yeah. That's a good idea." I looked at Toshio. His eyes half way closed, his face red and his tiny hand wrapped around my finger. There's nothing I can think to sing. He looked so tired. Toshio okajima... He was still lightly crying, but it was so frail and weak. I held him closer. His skin was soft. I sang in one of the other languages I knew, Korean. Sadako smiled. "My child does not smile. My child does not come to me. My child cannot recognize. Someday I will meet you again in the next world, embracing you in my arms." He squeezes onto my finger as tight as he could. To me, that meant 'keep going'. "This song I sang to you, will you remember it? I will sing this song to you, can you please fall asleep?" I couldn't tell if he was sleeping or not. I had to remember the rest of the lyrics.. "My love does not dream. My love does not her close eyes. My love cannot find the way to me." Right as I sang that last lyric, Ai came in. How ironic. "You're a great singer." Sadako said. Before I could say thank you, Toshio started coughing. Ai hurriedly grabbed him from me. His face was completely red. He stopped after a moment. "I'll take him to bed." She said then did so. Sadako looked at me with an expression I couldn't read. It was a mix between concern and happiness. "So you know Korean?" She asks. "Only a little bit. I'm more fluent in English. Haha." Ai came back out and rolled her eyes. "Quit flirting." She said. I just lit a cigarette. I didn't care enough right now to worry about it too much. "I'm not." Sadako replied defensively. Ai sat down on the couch. She crossed her arms like she was debating rather or not to do something. "...so... You're parents now." Sadako says. "Yeah?" Ai wasn't looking at her sister. Instead she had her eyes locked on my throat. I couldn't tell if she felt guilty or if she wanted to choke me. "Do you really think that will work out?" Sadako had such a serious look on her face. Almost like she was getting ready to fight. (You can pause the song now.) "What's that supposed to mean?" Ai sat up defensively. Oh god. I got mentally prepared to stop them if they get in a fight again. "You think you can control yourself? You already hurt your son. Not to mention your boyfriend is over here with bruises all over his neck." Oh Jesus. Ai stood up. "How the hell did I hurt my son?" Her arms were still crossed. She didn't look very threatening in her robe though. "Are you kidding? He's half the weight he should be, his lungs are screwed up and you're not doing anything. The only time you try is when you hear me complain about you." Sadako grabbed Ai by her pink robe and stared her right in the face. "Don't you dare tell me you didn't do something while you were pregnant." Ai pushed her sister off. "Rokuro always tries to take him from me." She quickly stopped Ai from leaving the room. "He probably figured out that you won't do shit." "You don't know me, bitch." Sadako just smirked at this. "Oh really? I know that you beat up your boyfriend and you think it's smart to buy drugs when you have a baby. That's right, I found them." Ai took a step back. I knew the first punch was coming. "I feel sorry for Rokuro, he somehow fell in love with you. A lying, drug addicted whore." Ai punched her sister in the jaw. Sadako grabbed her hair. That's when I put out my cigarette. "Okay. I've had enough." They both just looked at me. "Yeah Ai needs to get better, but you both need to calm the fuck down." Rolling her eyes, Ai sat back down. "I bet Toshio woke up after all this." Sadako let go and went back to check on him. Ai stared at me with a tired look. Over the days, she's gotten bags under her eyes. She's gotten paler. I didn't notice until just this second. "Why are you such a man whore?" She asks. "I'm not." I answered confidently. "OH MY GOD!!" A scream came from the bedroom. A sudden wave of anxiety washed over me. Ai and I looked at eachother. Sadako came running in the room with Toshio in her hands. I can't ever forget what he looked like, even though I've tried so many times. Blue skin. Mouth slightly opened. Eyes closed. Not moving at all. "Ai, call the police!" I tried not to yell as I took him in my arms. Toshio... He's so small. I put my hand on his chest to check for a heartbeat. Nothing. Everything in my body was shocked. This isn't happening. It can't be. No. Please. Anything but this. I'd take any of Ai's insanity just to keep him here. Please. If there's a God out there, please don't take him from me. He's all I have to live for. Take me instead. Let him live. Please. As they pulled him into the ambulance truck, I remembered the rest of the lyrics to the song. "Someday I will meet you again in the next world, embracing you in my arms. Someday, when I meet you for the first time... With a weary smile, I will hold both of your hands." No... He can't just die like this. Please. Don't take him away from me. Anything but this.

Living his best life: Caring for Christian
PHOTOS: MICHAEL GODERRE/BOSTON CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
Christian Jaspersen was wet, muddy — and having the time of his life. After an ATV ride around his family’s rural Oklahoma farm with their grandfather, he and his two older brothers plopped themselves into a nearby mud puddle, playing with toy trucks and getting wonderfully messy. “For a while, we didn’t know if Christian would be able to have a ‘normal’ childhood,” says his mother, Rachel. “Having these experiences now is just so special.”
Indeed, Christian, now 2 years old, spent nearly five months in his local neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) after being born with gastroschisis. In this congenital anomaly, the intestines and other abdominal organs can protrude outside the body, which can lead to poor bowel function or the loss of healthy intestinal tissue.
Although his clinicians initially believed that they could successfully salvage and reconnect his intestines, the opposite proved true: They determined that more of the little boy’s intestines would need to be removed, leaving him with short bowel syndrome, a serious condition that makes it difficult to absorb the nutrients necessary to grow and thrive.
Christian visits with Dr. Modi while CAIR’s social worker, Jessica McCaig, and mom Rachel look on.
Seeking a second opinion
As a result, Christian had to rely on intravenous parenteral nutrition (PN) — and it was unclear whether he would ever regain bowel function. Frustrated, Rachel and her husband, Jon, sought a second opinion from the Center for Advanced Intestinal Rehabilitation (CAIR) at Boston Children’s Hospital. In March 2018, they made their first trip to Boston to meet with Dr. Biren Modi and the rest of the CAIR team.
“Dr. Modi immediately outlined four possible surgical techniques that he could use to reconnect Christian’s intestines,” says Rachel. “But when I asked him how much he would need to remove, he told us that it wasn’t even an option not to save the intestines. I knew then that we had made the right decision.”
A catalyst for change
When he was a year old, Christian underwent successful reconnection surgery — but he soon faced another challenge. After performing a liver biopsy, Dr. Modi found that Christian had significant fibrotic liver disease, a risk associated with long-term PN. “We had been told that the liver heals itself and that high enzymes were nothing to worry about,” remembers Rachel. “I believe that he would still be on PN — and possibly on his deathbed — if we hadn’t come to Boston.”
Instead, Christian has been able to transition off intravenous nutrition to nutrition via a gastrostomy (G-tube) and, thanks to feeding therapy, has been experimenting with eating by mouth, too. He loves playing with his brothers, meeting new people and even taking airplane rides to return to Boston for checkups. His liver health has stabilized, and his parents and care team are optimistic that he won’t need a liver transplant in the future.
If he does, however, Rachel will be ready to help: After learning about her son’s liver damage last year, she underwent a vertical sleeve gastrectomy and lost nearly 150 pounds to become an eligible organ donor. “If it hadn’t been for Christian’s comprehensive care, I probably never would have sought my own medical treatment,” she says. “Christian is my inspiration and motivation, but Boston Children’s was the catalyst for both of us living our best lives.”

Teen Mom
In 8th grade I only wore clothes that I deemed “emo” enough, thought I was way tougher than I really was, purposefully cut my arms because I thought it felt good, and had already been sexually active for a little over a year. I didn’t have a bad life at home, by any means. My mom had gone back to college just before my 8th grade year, my dad would be working night shifts as a truck driver (my parents have been divorced since I was two), and even though I had the typical teenage frustrations and difficulties, I retrospectively can say that I really had it made. Of course, I was able to completely overlook all the good things I had, still managing to feel utterly misunderstood and neglected.
Thus began the typical dishonesty with my parents, the quiet suffering, and the belief that I was totally alone and unique in my experiences. This lead to me seeking out a new group of friends that was into what I saw as “adult” things like smoking and drinking. Before long, I would tell my mother I’d be staying at a friends house, when in reality I would be in a small town partying with people almost a decade older than me. Surprisingly, this wasn’t how I would become pregnant, even though the lifestyle I led practically begged for that outcome. I became pregnant in the best scenario possible for someone at that age. A longtime friend of mine (we met at around 8 years old) who had become my boyfriend at 12, and my on-again off-again boyfriend from about 14 to 16 would be the father of my child. Our first kisses were with each other, as well as the loss of our virginity.
I remember the day I found out I was pregnant VERY clearly. I had been suspicious of the situation ever since I had a weird spotty period; but being 14 I wasn’t about to go do the responsible thing and actually buy a pregnancy test to know for sure. I suspected I was about 2 months pregnant when my mom and I were at the local baseball/softball fields watching my little sister play a game. I had shared my concerns with only a few of my friends, but unfortunately a person had found out who didn’t really have a grasp on the gravity of the situation. She had told her mom as if it were common knowledge. You can imagine my moms reaction when this persons parent casually asked her how I was doing, explaining that she was surprised at the news. Stupefying shock, intense rage, and probably a little hurt doesn’t even begin to explain what must have been going through her mind in that moment. She dragged me home and interrogated me while my step father (poor guy) bought a few pregnancy tests. When the first test immediately said positive, there was a very brief period of time where I had a functioning laptop and cell phone. Note; VERY brief.
Not that I blame her in the slightest, because I couldn’t say what my reaction in that position would be. Since that day my pregnancy was a whirlwind of various appointments and a rapidly growing belly. I had left 8th grade not knowing, and would enter my freshman year in high school about 4 months pregnant. I thought I knew who the father was at the time (I never dated him, or the longtime friend in that period of a few months, I sort of selfishly did what was convenient to me at the time) but when I had my son a month later than planned, I kind of put two and two together. My suspicions would eventually be confirmed with a DNA test shortly after my sons 1 year birthday. There were a handful of other girls pregnant at the same time as me in my school, leading to various support groups being created by local pastors (both female) and other adult volunteers. They were nice, because they brought all of us and our experiences together. These groups made it painfully clear that what I wanted and what my mom wanted were two totally different things.
She fully expected me to give my son up for adoption to my aunt and uncle who were having fertility issues since their marriage. For the longest time, my grandmother would come over every night and attempt to coerce me into making the decision she thought was best, which always seemed to end in me sitting on the floor of my closet sobbing. I knew why it made sense to do what she was suggesting, but I just couldn’t do it. She would tell my aunt and uncle that I was going to go through with it, then tell me that my aunt and uncle wanted me to come over just to talk. Whether it’s fair to do so or not, I still hold a little bit of blame in my heart towards her for making those few months of my life living hell. My mom would eventually tell me that she had kind of let my grandmother take over, because she was so stressed out by the whole ordeal and didn’t know what she actually thought was the right thing to do. It was an extremely terrifying time for me. Until I was about 7 months pregnant, I wasn’t even sure if I’d be able to both stay with my mom in her home and keep my son. By that point, I had actually planned on moving in with my dads mom, in case my mom wouldn’t allow me to stay with her if I didn’t give my son up to her brother and his wife. Eventually, I would ask her if I needed to begin the process of transferring to the school district that my grandmother lives within and she told me no, my son and I could stay.
I can’t even explain how relieved I was to hear her say that. She finally started to come around to the idea of being a grandmother (even if it was at the age of 35) around that time as well. I could see her getting more and more excited about all the cute baby things and the showers she helped plan. She even helped me paint the room that would eventually be the nursery. She went to birthing and parenting classes with me, took me to every checkup, and was just being amazingly supportive since we had most of the “what” worked out, and now could just focus on the “how”.
I went into labor while walking out of an ice cream shop with my mom (shoutout to chocolate chip cookie dough from U.D.F.). I was carrying a double scoop to our car, when I suddenly had the craziest, most amazingly satisfying sneeze ever. This was followed by a laughing fit as soon as we got into the car because I joked to her about the tragedy that would be a pregnant chick losing her desert. What was not satisfying was the discomfort of a weird discharge (apparently it was something described to me as mucus?! Gross..) and an increasingly uncomfortable tightness in the center of my stomach near my bellybutton. I had already gone through “false labor” once, because of a fall l had while walking down an icy sidewalk trying to get home from school one day. I was scheduled to be induced into labor that Tuesday (the UDF visit was on a Saturday afternoon), so I was confident that this was the real deal this time. Eventually the tightness turned into mostly painless contractions, so we went to the hospital.
Soon after we arrived, the nurses decided it was indeed time, and they proceeded to break the amniotic sack (which was an unpleasant and strange experience similar to a very large water balloon popping while inside of your lady parts). Of course, it was nothing compared to the hours of discomfort I had before finally demanding that an anesthesiologist come in RIGHT NOW and make it stop. The pain was 1000% not what I expected. I knew it would be awful, but I had never really tried to imagine the exact spot where the pain would be coming from. This was probably due to both my age and the fact that I’d never really had any sexual education, but I remember thinking, “of course there wouldn’t be any pain in the actual vagina at first, there’s a whole lot more that the baby has to pass through before it can even think about getting past that part”. In summery, “dilation” is indeed not referring to the vagina, it’s referring to the cervix.
The pain was concentrated into one tiny point in the center of my stomach. Had it been any lesser of a pain, I would almost say it was similar to menstrual cramping, or how I imagine being kicked in the balls would feel like. Unfortunately, it’s not even something you can scale, let alone describe very accurately to someone who’s never had the experience for themselves. If I had to try, I would say it was similar to someone grabbing your ovaries (if you’re a dude, imagine stomach / intestines / testicles maybe??) on either side with both hands, then slowly and simultaneously squeezing harder, pulling the two hands away from each other, and doing a wringing / twisting motion, then a release for a few short moments until it’s time for another contraction. Contractions become more frequent and intense with less cool down periods the closer you get to delivery.
When I began getting more intense contractions, I went from saying, “this fucking sucks this fucking sucks this fucking sucks”, all the way to promising a God I do not believe in that I would “never ever have sex again if you’ll just please please please make this stop right now”. Around 9 PM I got a medication that was supposed to help you relax in between contractions and to “take the edge off” of the pain (it did not). And by about 11 PM I was getting an epidural (the IV / medication they put in your spine to numb you below the torso). I was so worn out, and so relieved that I immediately fell asleep, only waking when a nurse would roll me over from time to time to check my dilation. By that I’m trying to politely say, “I woke up to someone’s hands on my shoulder, and then quickly realized that their fingers were also inserted into my vagina”. I was woken up around 3 AM to start pushing. Just before 4 AM, I was holding my baby while my mom said with tears in her eyes, “look what you did”.
We were able to leave the hospital about a day and a half later, and I then proceeded to have the most intense week of my life. When I imagine how horrible it must be to undergo torture, I imagine the way I felt on the fifth day after bringing my newborn baby home. I specifically remember the fifth day because I had a checkup with my doctor (actually for myself and my baby), and upon returning home after the visit I quietly snuck the car seat inside and set it down trying so hard I ensure that my son wouldn’t wake up. When I felt confident he wouldn’t, I went into the living room to lay down and to try and get a nap. After a bit of tossing and turning, I realized I miraculously couldn’t sleep. I was so exhausted; my eyes burned and hurt to even blink, my whole body was throbbing because of a broken tailbone that I wouldn’t know had been broken for another few months, and I was so delusional I started sobbing because of the overwhelming combination of hormones, chemicals, and emotions riddling me practically useless. When my mom realized what was going on, she offered to watch the baby for me while I tried to take a nap. Once I heard that he had woken up, it was a matter of minutes before I knew I’d never be able to sleep. I somehow managed to stay up another 8 hours after that.
Of course, once you become a parent you finally start to grasp the amount of respect you should have been showing your parents all along. My mom and I have such an awesome relationship now, it really is so much better than I ever imagined it could be. I have to think that some of that is because of all the hardships we’ve made it through together. It’s hard not to look back on the early years of me being a mother and not acknowledge that I was SO fucking lucky. I had free childcare, I had supportive parents, and I had almost infinite possibilities when it came to choosing a career. I can’t even begin to explain how amazing it is that I was supported the way I was / am. I don’t want to sound too much like a pageant queen, but I can’t ignore that everything I have now, I owe to my family, various programs that helped me finish high school, and unquestionably my son.

Why are car insurance for men more higher than women?
I don't understand why is insurance for men more higher than women. Lets be honest: Women can get distracted as men and men can also get distracted. Men have temptation of speed, and so do women. some women have a tendency to be impatient behind a slow driver and dangerously overtake with their escalades or odyssey and so do men. Cheapest car insurers for 17 year olds?
Which websites offer cheap/reasonable insurance offers for new drivers? Im 17 so I wanna find the best deal!
Car Insurance: Can they check. .?
It would be nice if someone knows this answer for sure, say a cop. I have a license, my registration is good until 2013, my insurance card says its good until 2013. Now say I do this. Say I tell my insurance company, I no longer want to have insurance with them anymore, even though I still have a card stating im insured until 2013 Will I be able to get away with a casual traffic stop (if I ever had one), since I have a card stating im insured until 2013, though in reality, I dont? Im figuring I would, since perhaps the cops computers do not have a way of checking if their insurance is valid or not just from a simple computer check. I have paid my insurance for about 3 years, no accidents, and if I had the money, id pay it. For all intents and purposes, the car insurance card only lasts for 6 months anyway, instead of a full year""

""My car was stolen and now I'm being investigated for insurance fraud. I'm only 18, help!!?""
My car was stolen on Saturday. I was driving in the car with someone I thought I could trust and when I went inside a subway terminal to meet another friend I left the keys in the car and the person who was in the car with me took off with the car, my phone, my purse, and about $1500 worth of shopping bags and boxed furniture that I had just bought from Ikea. I called the police and they aren't doing much help. I've had to investigate a lot of this myself. The person who took my car doesn't have permanent housing so its been hard to track him down. I found out from the cops he has 4 other warrants out for his arrest for crimes relating to cars. Obviously, I didn't know that when I left him alone with mine. After my dad filed a claim to our insurance company, they said they were going to begin an investigation and sent us a letter saying it was within their rights not to give us any money for the car. They think me and the person who stole the car are working together to get money off of them. Their going to interview me and I'm really scared. The last time I broke the law was when I was five and tried to steal a barbie from Walgreens. I'm only 18 now and I don't even know how insurance or fraud work, never mind insurance fraud. They're going to accuse me. They only thing I'm really guilty of is being stupid/ naive/ gullible. I trusted a person who I should not have trusted. My questions are: 1) How can I track down this person? I sent a messege on Facebook to all of our mutual friends telling them to keep an eye out. 2) How can I move the investigation from the police (who are on my side) along, when they aren't really doing anything? 3) What am I supposed to tell the insurance guy? What should I say? I just want my car back. I feel so helpless, please help.""

I disagree with ObamaCare, but I also disagree with Car Insurance, but why aren't people getting all bent out of shape out that? __________________________________ To add on to that: I understand driving a car is a privildge, but I don't understand why I am required to buy car insurance for owning a car. I feel like that would be saying you have to buy fire insurance for you house because you might catch someone else's house on fire. But, what if you are a good driver and don't wreck, why are you still required to buy insurance? I don't see the government telling me what I need to buy and what I don't buy when I own something. What raises car insurance premiums?
I accidently dented my roomies car with a scratch as well. I was told by a good friend since the car was parked if she took out a claim on it and she didn't list anyone who's at fault (in other words she doesn't know) that her insurance would pay for it. First is that true and if so, would that raise her rates? She told me it would raise her rates. Also she said all it needed was to be buffed, how much do those usually cost? She has a 2007 or 08 Saturn VUE. Because if the buff isn't that much it might not be worth it to challenge her. But there is a possibility the damage might be more then a buff can handle.""

""Getting my first motorcycle, need some help picking one out with my current financial status?""
So, I'm 16, and getting a bike is basically a tradition in my family. My grandpa has been riding since he was 14, my deceased grandpa was in a biker gang called the Blue angels which was made entirely of cops, my step grandpa currently has a golden wing and has had 4-5 bikes before that. And my dad had one sport bike until he found it was inconvenient because of how tired he got after riding it [like he didn't expect it from a sport bike though, right?]. Anyways, I need help finding a bike I can afford. Seeing as it's my first bike, (and im only 16), I don't want to spend 15 grand on a bike that I'll probably end up laying down. I'm probably going to buy a used bike for under 2 grand. I'm not picky about the year and what company it was made by. But I'd prefer not to get a sport bike because of this insane insurance costs. And I'm not going to be leaving the state very often, so I don't need a touring bike. Summary; I'm leaning towards a Cruiser. And I'm not gonna be the Jack *** going 80 across the intersection while doing a wheelie, I enjoy life too much. And I've ridden a few dirt bikes before, so I have a bit of experience. Any help is appreciated for finding a bike model that I can get fairly cheap used. And I'd like something larger than 250cc, but I don't want a Ducati Monster engine... You know?""

Assurant Health Insurance?
At a previous job I had good health insurance but adding my husband was costly so we got him BCBS IL through a local insurance agent. ""How does car insurance in Ontario, Canada work if deductibles are involved?""
Maybe I'm missing something here, but the way it's been explained to me is this: I've got a $500 deductible on my policy. If someone backs into my parked car, this will be deducted from the payout I get for repairs. OK, let's say the damages amount to $900. That would mean that because of MY $500 deductible, the payout to me would be $400. I'd have to pay the other $500 out of pocket to repair my car. The insurance company would then reclaim that $400 from the other guy's insurance company. Now, if the other guy also has a $500 deductible (very likely), then he'd have to pay $400 out of pocket. That seems wacked to me. Someone damages my car, and he has to pay LESS than I do for the damages. Am I missing something?""
