one of the best things about having parents who have been queer allies all their lives is they have access to gay pop culture history that no-one else talks about anymore (also achievable by being friends with people 2x your age)

I casually mentioned the song Love Shack to my mum the other day, and she told me that it was made by the B-52s - a queer band.

I looked it up.

(this is based on 5 mins of basic research so take it with a pinch of salt, but...) It doesn't even seem like they were calling themselves or the band queer/gay at the time.

I think it was more of an "if you know you know" situation.

As I learn more about the recent past I find that there were a lot of those, and not all of them get recorded.

Inevitably, most history will be lost.

And then the other morning on the radio, I heard a song of theirs. Private Idaho.

Surely, based on 1991 gay art movie My Own Private Idaho?

No, wrong way round, apparently, the director used the song as inspiration for the title

I only heard of and watched that movie this year. I'd heard of the B-52s; I'd heard some of their songs.

But if I'd heard that song on the radio last year I'd have had no idea it was written by a largely queer group and inspired the title of an iconic movie in queer cinema history

there are 135 responses, and there will be 64 contestants in the bracket! candidates with two or more submissions, like 'my own private idaho', 'duodecimal' 'fat ham', 'nothing much to do', and a lot of the iconic ones like rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead and gnomeo & juliet, have made it in! there are a few slots left, which will be chosen from the 1-submission category based on propaganda I get. debating sharing the sheet or not; for now i'll say that among others, the witch from mercury, elsinore (the game), prince of cats, and teenage dick are all 1-submission things i'm considering; among others; and fortinbras and haider will probably get in for sure on my personal bias.

some have been excluded based on rules-- 'hamlet in elsinore' and romeo and juliet (1996) don't count because they're too similar to the original material, being productions rather than retellings. kermit: prince of denmark has been excluded because it was never fully produced.

as always, everything under this bracket will be tagged 'tournament', while the regular posts on my blog will not be! I don't know when the bracket will be going up, as i've been swamped by school, but I'll start work on it soon :)

His American father is from Hawaii, and is of Native Hawaiian, Chinese, English, and Portuguese descent. Reeves' paternal grandmother is of Hawaiian and Chinese descent. His mother was working in Beirut when she met his father, who abandoned his wife and family when Reeves was three years old. Reeves last met his father on the Hawaiian island of Kauai when he was 13.

He is a Canadian actor and musician. He is the recipient of numerous accolades in a career on screen spanning four decades. In 2020, The New York Times ranked him as the fourth-greatest actor of the 21st century, and in 2022 Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Reeves is known for his leading roles in action films, his amiable public image, and his philanthropic efforts.

Born in Beirut and raised in Toronto, he made his acting debut in the Canadian television series Hangin' In (1984), before making his feature-film debut in Youngblood (1986). Reeves had his breakthrough role in the science-fiction comedy Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989), and he reprised his role in the sequel Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991). He gained praise for playing a hustler in the independent drama My Own Private Idaho (1991) and established himself as an action hero with leading roles in Point Break (1991) and Speed (1994). Following several box-office disappointments, Reeves's performance in the horror film The Devil's Advocate (1997) was well received.
