Point Mech Panic
Mountain Climbing Mecha Combat
Brought to you by ANN, A Newschannel for Mecha Combat
Highlighting the April 3319 Point Mech Panic
The brackets had been really shaken up. I was at K5 for the first time since... welll, a long time ago. And most of my clan was here as well, 6 of us made Star League the second biggest clan, Deaths Collectors had 7. We had discussed strategy and tactics and had a plan. At 12 minute to scramble alert I started moving toward the top. From the plains to the highest foothills took 6 attacks and 4 minutes. At the start signal our plan started to come unglued. The Collectors started fighting among themselves for top position. I decided to sit back and watch for a couple minutes. At the appointed time I focused on Himmelhan, but he was gone. Checking the positions I aimed at Kash, but the light flashed. I glared disbelievingly at my timepiece. Two minutes. WTF, TWO MINUTES! Here we are geared up for a one on one slugfest and it ENDS AFTER TWO MINUTES? Those who held top positions and got Gold and Nephilaxes this time were:
Div 1 (10 Players): Fabio Favaro, Fusion (Notos)(1m,21s) Div 2 (21 Players): German Jaramillo, Tiamat Dragons (Fext)(2s) Div 3 (24 Players): Dexter Berry, Fusion (Notos)(6m,56s) Div 4 (14 Players): Chris Harding, The Isle of Misfit Toys (Fext)(48m,8s) Div 5 (39 Players): Roman Himmelhan, Death`s Collectors (Boreas)(6s) Div 6 (42 Players): Mike Marszalek, Heroes Shadow Brigade (Boreas)(28m15s) Div 7 (41 Players): Paine Field, Breakroom (Regis)(43m,43s) Div 8 (29 Players): shidik Dwirahmanto, ITC (Ignis)(3h,11m) Div 9 (25 Players): Dante, Dragon Flight 9 (Sever)(51s) Div 10 (52 Players): Waitai Rihari, Nu dragons (Dilophos)(3h,2m) Div 11 (15 Players): Frank Hudak, The Brotherhood (Antithesis)(16h,10m) Div 12 (23 Players): MonkofMayhem, N.C.B.o.C. 1st Light. (Dread)(1h,17m)
Total participants: 335, Total Medals: 201(of 216 Possible)
Lack of participants in div 1, 4 and 11 can probably be ascribed to the brackets this time, simply not enough actives to fill the divisions.
3 Golds to the Dragons, Jaramillo`s in div 2 against opponents up to more than twice his level. Very impressive, two Golds to Fusion, Other families and clans didnt get more than one.
Standing fuming near my mech, I noticed Roman Himmelhan stopping and walking over carrying a large bottle. "Hi Sten, glad to see you up and running again. I had expected to meet you but early endings happen sometimes. I noticed you wanted Intervees so here I am. By the way, I like your aftershave just fine and brought a magnum bottle of your brand as a gift." Always friendly and couteous that Roman, exept when you fight him, but afterwards always willing to give you the first aid kit.
Sten Hugo Hiller Congrats, so I get an interview?
Roman Himmelhan That is why I came over, so shoot, I am all Yours
Sten Hugo Hiller Your first aperance in the KOTMs was back in`62, then you had a decade of inactivity, before you started picking medals.
Roman Himmelhan The inactivity is easy to explain. I was just checking out the game at first, didn't had many clues what was going on and lost interest soon. But when MG celebrated its first birthday, i saw the little notice. Came back, and stayed since the game already had evolved. the Megazome was a meka out of many and not the too-expensive-to-purchase end of the line iirc, it had been around a few millions of each ressource - something to make sure no-one was able to purchase it. When i came back, this had changed, there were new mekas, new weapons and more KotMs
Sten Hugo Hiller Your first Gold was in the Porktober `01 Sinle Rainbow, and this is the sixth?
Roman Himmelhan Yep, 6th, just counted through my Nephilax. I love these buddies.
Sten Hugo Hiller Yes they are nice, I think I might have a few myself. In your long career you started in the Raging Vengance and did well in the Clanwars. Around `00 you shifted alignment to the Deaths Collectors. Why the change?
Roman Himmelhan The *RV* family had been a nice home to several of the current AFF members. And to a few bunnies, too. But as with most families, it takes a head to lead them. Mk Mathews did a great job doing so, but at some point vanished from the game and no-one was able to contact him anymore. He had been talking about moving before disappearing, but we all had expected to get into contact with him after that again. Well, we weren't able and at some point had different opinions. We were somehow part of the Mainer family then, but i don't remember which clans these were then. At that time, AFF was clearly the bad guy in the game. We had offers to join them and since *RV* had broken apart, i simply followed my leader by then. with mixed feelings. But in the end, the AFF guys turned out to be humans, believe it or not. I think we have a lot of fun in our chats.
Sten Hugo Hiller Well, you did well there, exept for your stint in the Murderbots you have had almost only golds in the CWs. I know many who think you should have been bumped up a division or two as you seem unbeatable. But this is about the KOTMs. What main format suits you best there, limited or unlimited?
Roman Himmelhan The KOTM participants are tough folks. At least those who try to claim the top. In all honesty, my unlimited formation can't hold on to the main guys in my divisions bracket. So i usually do fare better in limited ones. With front line and point meka beeing my best competive ones. They may not grant me a win each time, but that has less to do with their power level and way more with the KOTM tactics. This one was a fast finisher - i wasn't out of hatoraides yet.
Sten Hugo Hiller After almost running dry last time I decided to pace myself, obviously a mistake this time. You didnt mention the rainbows, despite having three golds there. Are they not to your liking?
Roman Himmelhan Well, the single rainbow isn't my favourite since i have to use some of the mekas that i've abandoned long ago. Like the Jottun. Oh man, that meka always failed me, dunno why. Right now, i still have a Harrel in my setup, which comes close to that, but it's going to be replaced with an Antithesis anytime soon. It just needs a few more levels. Then it will be a nice addition to my double rainbow setup. Which is also my main setup. I found that as my niche when i realized that i wasn't able to keep up with the heavy spenders anyways. So i didn't mention that setup. But i have to agree, i'm doing fine there. But i think my power level in the other two specialists mentioned above are higher.
Sten Hugo Hiller You sure are hard to beat in pointmech, and your frontline is scary. When it comes to chrono are you a big fan or would you prefer less of them?
Roman Himmelhan The nice thing about chrono ones is that you can roughly see where you are heading and the prices are a bit better than for a normal KotM. I think it's ok. I wouldn't like to see more, but i think it's ok how often we do see them now. I only dislike them when i'm too dumb to read and realize about 8 hours before the end that it's a chrono one... XD had that the last time, tried to do my best to come up again, but failed by a few hundreds and made 19th in the end, lol.
Sten Hugo Hiller I generally dont have time to babysit them or there is a wall of unbeatables, or a hungry wolfpack who tear me down. But what kind of KOTM would you like to see in the near future, Any you have participated in, or just think would be exiting?
Roman Himmelhan One that i would like to see is a limited tonnage one in the 40 to 50 range. I'm doing fine in all 3 of these. The babysitting is a pain for real, but most of the times i'm just aiming for bronze there. If i do aim for gold (to receive a silver in the end XD ), it's when i know the time is just fine for me. A ending during a european late evening and the last two days are a weekend where the family hasn't planned on being on the road or the like... But back to your question: apart from the 40, 45 or classic 50, i'd like to have an Ammonite one. I have 11 of these fully leveled and would like to see how they would fare. I had other named ones where i did fine with 10 or so since i didn't have more, so i guess an Ammonite one would be a blast (and ending during late evening in europe, you hear me, Nick?)
Sten Hugo Hiller From your mouth to the developers ears. Speaking of tonnagelimit, do you prefer mechtype or just tonnage, say 50ton or oggun?
Roman Himmelhan Tonnage suits me better. Those Luisons and Vizis are just too nice to not have them fight alongside the old trusted Ogguns. Heck, thinking of those i remember having enough Ogguns to fill my complete formation with those... and i have nine Ogguns in all 馃槈
Sten Hugo Hiller I think there might be a few in a corner in my hangar as well. Speaking of the good old days, then it was more Medals in the KOTMs, what do you think of the reduction?
Roman Himmelhan It makes it harder, but i'm fine with it. Before the change, i entered to have a bronze for granted. Nowadays, you have to watch a little more if you want to have a piece of the cake. But since it's called King of the Mountain, i think it's ok to have some real competition there. Also, at first i really wasn't a fan of the price rotation. I was glad to receive the same stuff over and over again. But i got used to it over time and get a few useful ones now and then. Plus, the old ones that i got to love have been sold somewhere somewhen along the way...
Sten Hugo Hiller Yes, there were nice pieces, but when I have to much and it takes a long time to search, some of the weaker stuff was sold to finance other stuff. But speaking of mechs, weapons and equipment. As you have been around for a long time and have plenty of craftsmenmechs to show your success, There are certainly plenty of Warriors who would like to find out what your favorites are?
Roman Himmelhan In fact, i have a few favourites. The Boreas is king at my level range (120 right now). One of the reasons why i did build one out of Legos... but there are more. I realize the potential in the Fext, whic will really unfold later on. But Boreas is better at this range. Both of these are niode based, so i'll go with one mostly underrated mekas, too: the Glaccus is a superb frontline heavy duty meka. I have one in my frontline, accompagnoning niode mekas. And it's the right place for it. From the designer's point of view, there are some honourable mentions, i like the 4 legged ones a lot. Look at that fast and agile moving Smilodon - a dream of the past. And the Krampus had been a blast, too. Very hard and reliable to break through any front lines, very good for its level. Now to bring it to an end: there is one all-time favourite, even outclassing the Boreas (not game-wise, but from my feelings): it's THE Dilophos. You gotta love that one. In my honest opinion it's the iconic symbol for this game.
Sten Hugo Hiller Those are surely fine machines, and worthy additions to many a Commanders arsenal. But I notice your teammates are starting to look impatient, the feast they have prepared for you will probably start soon. Any final Words?
Roman Himmelhan If you ever happen to be on the downside in a faceoff, just remember that your Dilophos has enough place in the cockpit to store the complete collection of Led Zeppelin songs. And if you go down, go down with guns ablaze and emitting "whole lotta love" from your outside speakers! oh, and by the way, if you don't go down, you can have a nice party the same
Sten Hugo Hiller Dont mention CW to me, you will probably kick us over half the planet again. Have a nice party.
And he went off to a victorycelebration. I got into my mech and returned to the compound. A New Event would surely be announced soon.
Upcoming event: King Chrono Bring your best mechs, enter early and stay as high as you can. This is pointbased so get enough points for a medal.
Event ends jan 18 between 2300 and 2359 New York Time You have to join to get prizes.
