Faramir stan discourse under the cut, not even trying to be unbiased
I saw a discussion of the kingship arc in ROTK (the book volume) and GRRM's infamous tax policy quote and how Aragorn's arc sits with modern audiences, and it was interesting, but when people are like "anyway, it's not like Aragorn displaces anyone who could do a better job" I'm practically sitting on my hands to stay out of the immediate online fray.
But I'm just, you know, thinking about the explicitly imperial Gondor of the Fourth Age, and the lines about the Rohirrim and Gondorian armies fighting battles in lands far from Gondor's or Rohan's borders, and meanwhile, there's Faramir in TTT talking wistfully about how he wants Minas Tirith to be "a queen among other queens" rather than to subjugate others.
>_<
#JUST THINKING!!!#my more rational brain appreciates the reasons that aragorn showers faramir with honors and gives him all of ithilien#and urges him to dwell in emyn arnen so he's always near minas tirith#and i know it's supposed to be a happy ending for him but every time i read his beautiful paean to minas tirith#and why he loves his home so much and also what he fears (it must seem baselessly at the time)#my resistant reading stanning brain is like 'and in the end he's going to get kicked out'#yeah in a way that gives him a better life materially than most people alive#but he's my fave and MY fave getting narratively railroaded into watching his beloved home get turned into an imperial capital#and forced by structural fiat to be happy about it#is one of those things that sometimes i find ways of accepting and sometimes is just AGGHGHHHHHHHHH#anghraine rants#legendarium fanwank#legendarium blogging#aragorn critical#jewel of the seashore#húrinionath
