You were awoken by the sound of your door handle jiggling. When you peaked open an eye you saw your five year old daughter carrying Karl towards your bed. You turned your neck to see your still sleeping husband. Poe looked adorable. One of his arms was secure around your waist and his cheek was squished against the pillow. Soft puffs of air came from his mouth that was slightly open. The man's peaceful rest was disrupted when your daughter placed your pet raccoon on the bed and then crawled up right behind. She jumped onto Poe which caused him to groan out as he wished for a few more minutes of rest. Your daughter moved her face to be real close to his and she moved the hair out of his face.
“Daddy wake up!” She had a smile on her face despite her demanding tone.
Karl came and curled up on your lap, clearly not ready to get up himself. You pet the critter as you watched Poe groan and lightly push her off of him so he could get up. Your daughter fell back but just as fast got up again. Her small hands tried to push her bangs out of her face but failed. You let out a snort.
“Lenore, you're starting to look like your father. We're gonna have to cut your bangs today.” She let out a noise of protest.
Your daughter, Lenore, was obsessed with her father. She always wanted to hang out with him or talk to him, she really was his little mini me but you didn’t mind, it was too cute. Poe leaned over and gave you a kiss on your cheek as the small Poe became preoccupied with Karl. After saying good morning to each other and giving a ton of quick kisses he got up.
“Come on sweetheart, want to make your mother breakfast?” He held his hand out for her to take. Before she did though she grabbed her furry companion.
“Yes! Come along Karl.” Poe cringed at how she was holding onto him and grabbed him allowing him to jump onto his shoulders.
You smiled as they left the room. Your wonderful husband always gave you extra time in the morning. Lenore was getting older and becoming quite energetic in her own, Edgar Allan Poe’s daughter type way. You let yourself rest for a bit more before she stormed into your room telling you that breakfast was ready.
When you got into the kitchen Lenore was already shoving food into her mouth. You gave Poe a kiss on his cheek and thanked him as you went to grab yours. The three of you ate while your child went on about anything she could think of. She was already very imaginative. You brought all three of your plates to the sink and asked Lenore to stay seated so you could cut her bangs. She whined and you almost thought she was about to cry until she actually spoke words.
“Can daddy and I continue our mystery book?” She tried to push her bangs out of her eyes to look at you again.
Your daughter was hilarious. She didn't want to cut her hair but it was obviously bothering her. Also due to your husband's speech patterns she tended to talk more formally, you didn't even think she knew what she was saying sometimes.  You laughed so hard once you fell because she told you she was in ‘despair’ because she couldn't find her favorite toy. Poe was right there with you but has more of ‘this is perfectly normal for a five year old to say this’ mentality.
“Yes we can!” Poe spoke up while you nodded.
He loved writing with her and he hit that jackpot because she already showed signs of having an interest in writing. They were working on a mystery book together about a little girl and her sidekick raccoon. The two detectives were trying to figure out who committed the despicable crime of eating the last cookie, little did they know the culprit was one of them! The culprit just so happened to be the little girl's furry friend- Poe came up with that part. It was quite the thriller.
They would sit together and he would write everything while Lenore just said whatever came to mind. It was adorable watching them work together and sometimes they would drag you in to help. Poe missed writing his dark and complex mysteries but it was a nice change to write more light hearted ones. It was just the price of having a kid but that didn't mean he stopped writing, oh no. He’d write you a lot of emotional and romantic poems about how much he loved you. You'd always find them on your pillow or your car and they always made you tear up.
You grabbed the scissors and walked up to your daughter who just stared up at you. You let out a laugh. It was beginning to be unnerving how much Lenore looked like Poe. Her dark brown hair, the bangs covering her eyes, her blank yet innocent face as she analyzed your every move… You shuddered. There was one thing that could fix that! You snipped her bangs and revealed her eyes.
“There are those gorgeous peepers!” You pinched her cheeks affectionately and she began to giggle.
Lenore realized she was done and hopped off the chair toward her dad, who she almost knocked over from an abrupt hug. She grabbed his hand before dragging him away. He begged her to slow down but she just wouldn't. You shook your head with a smile on your face and began to clean up the kitchen.
Their voices carried all the way from his study to the kitchen. You could hear her rambling and him countering or agreeing with some of the stuff she said. Karl jumped up onto the counter and you scratched behind his ears. As he began to puur you couldn't help but feel calm. You were lucky to have such a perfect little family. The only thing that pulled you out of your thoughts was your daughter yelling for you.
“Mommy! Daddy and I need your help!”
You grabbed Karl before making your way toward the two loves of your life. The only thought in your head was that this must be what Heaven is like.
