As an American who has been able to vote since 2012, I'm not sure what it's like on ballots in other countries but here they word measures on ballots very ambiguously and confusing. This time in California was the first time I remember in a while where each measure we had to vote on was completely laid out with who was for and who was against and included their party. We are also not taught in school how to read these measures, so the understanding is low for most I've talked to. If you don't go out of your way to research the issues on your own (and even then, the internet and media is so littered with propaganda campaigns it's hard to get factual information), you likely don't know what you're saying yes or no to, or what that means. A yes to you could really mean no on the ballot, and vice versa. The clearest thing we are asked to vote on is president and vice president, and local government like senators, heads of school boards, mayors, governors, etc, because it's just "who do you want for this position? fill out the bubble next to the person you want."
I remember the first time I ever voted I was standing in the kiosk sweating because I didn't understand what a yes or no would mean on a measure that would decide to get rid of or keep the death penalty. The wording was that bad.
#our system is bad#it's definitely a skill you gain which is a stupid skill you shouldn't even need#voting should be as simple and straightforward as possible#my mom is vehemently against tr*mp which is great but she had no idea the kennedy jr was so horrific#when I explained to her the truth she was dumbfounded#politics in the usa benefit from ignorance and misinformation#and the sad truth for some percentage of voters is they simply don't understand what they're reading when they do show up to vote
