They sing their joy because in those waters God has saved them from an enemy that was determined to destroy them. Previously, Moses himself was saved from the waters and his sister witnessed the event. In fact, Pharaoh had commanded: ”Every son that is born to the Hebrews you shall cast into the Nile” (Exodus 1:22). The various Christian Confessions have had this experience. In the last century, we finally realized we found ourselves together on the shores of the Red Sea. We were saved in Baptism and the pleasing song of praise, which other brothers and sisters intone, belongs to us because it’s also ours. When we say that we recognize the Baptism of Christians of other traditions, we confess that they also have received the Lord’s forgiveness and His grace, which operates in them. And we accept their worship as genuine expression of praise for what God accomplishes. So we wish to pray together, uniting our voices even more. And even when differences separate us, we acknowledge that we belong to the redeemed people, to the same family of brothers and sisters loved by the one Father. After the liberation, the chosen people undertook a long and difficult journey through the desert, often vacillating, but drawing strength from the memory of the salvific work of God and of his ever close presence. Christians of today also find many difficulties on the way, surrounded by so many spiritual deserts, which make hope and joy dry up. On the way there are also grave dangers, which put life in jeopardy: how many brothers today suffer persecutions in the name of Jesus! When their blood is shed, even if they belong to different Confessions, they become at the same time witnesses of the faith, martyrs, united in the bond of the baptismal grace. Together with friends of other religious traditions, Christians also face challenges today that demean human dignity: they flee from situations of conflict and poverty; are victims of the trafficking of human beings and of other modern slaveries; they suffer hardships and hunger, in a world ever richer in means and poor in love, where inequalities continue to increase. However, as the Israelites of Exodus, Christians are called to guard together the memory of all that God has accomplished in them. Reviving this memory, we can sustain one another and face — armed only with Jesus and the gentle force of His Gospel –, every challenge with courage and hope. Brothers and sisters, with the heart full of joy for having sung today here together a hymn of praise to the Father, through Christ our Saviour and in the Spirit that gives life, I wish to express my affectionate greetings to you: to His Eminence the Metropolitan Gennadios, Representative of the Ecumenical Patriarchate; to His Grace Bernard Ntahoturi, personal Representative in Rome of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and to all the Representatives and Members of the various Christian Confessions gathered here. I am happy to greet the Ecumenical Delegation of Finland, which I had the pleasure of meeting this morning. I also greet the students of the Ecumenical Institute of Bossey, on a visit to Rome to deepen their knowledge of the Catholic Church, and the Orthodox and Eastern Orthodox young people who study here thanks to the generosity of the Committee of Cultural Collaboration with the Orthodox Churches, which operates in the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. Bridgewater Associates: Leadership Lessons and Super-mind Organizations

“Thinking is easy, acting is difficult, and to put one’s thoughts into action is the most difficult thing in the world.” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Leaders should love organizations. I’m excited that more business dialogue acknowledges this point for reasons other than positional power or economic gain. An increased appreciation for the value that intentionally-designed, well-administered organizations bring to team member’s lives and personal development, to customer’s well-being and satisfaction, and to local stakeholder’s enablement; is evident and exciting.

I have been fortunate to be a part of organizations at the forefront of this mindset shift with leaders that are true originals. Leaders who have clearly given deep thought to the organizations they are building and to the internalized values they are embedding within their workplace communities. Below I attempt to unpack some of the practices that have enabled one such organization and its leaders to deliver both outstanding business and individual growth outcomes.

Of focus is Bridgewater Associates and Ray Dalio. While some engaged discussions have occurred, given the publication of multiple books and various media appearances, I question whether some of the magic gets lost via media translation. Personally, I found Bridgewater to be a uniquely high-performing learning organization at scale. Most importantly, they achieved this status via rigorous, intentional, and continuous designs by its leadership team. Bridgewater devised innovative ways to integrate their values, ideas, and actions within a dynamic, growing community.

First, some trends that materially impact our business world today and that particularly manifest at Bridgewater within the hyper-competitive alternative investment industry:

(a) Insight is an increasing component of business outcomes – see Capitalism without Capital. As stated by Dalio, “in order to be successful you are betting against the consensus”. With increasing customer choice, higher stakeholder expectations, and blurred barriers between traditional industries - this is becoming true whether your product is investment returns, iPhones, or children’s movies. In addition, the dimensions of this "insight" continue to expand: cognitives, aesthetics, embodiments, purpose...; we are witnessing additional commercialization of human intangles;

(b) Collaborative genius and collective Super-minds are recognized as the compounding competitive advantage. Leading to many observed “superstar effects” in our global economy;

(c) Communities and affective incentives (“new alphas”) are key to engagement and to accreting discretionary efforts from highly skilled, highly motivated knowledge workers. New alphas, along with technological enablement, are the ingredients to Super-minds.

These trends require a different type of organization and a different type of leader. I believe Ray Dalio is a demonstrated member of this new class. Below are 7 brief descriptions of habits and practices that I witnessed Dalio intentionally displaying and embedding within Bridgewater’s leadership DNA. Resulting in an interesting case study of an innovation machine at scale.

1. A Cognitive Apprenticeship:

“Fortunately, most human behavior is learned observationally through modeling from others.” ― Albert Bandura

Somewhat akin to a traditional apprenticeship of observing a master demonstrate, coach, and provide scaffolding for the acquisition of new skills and talents; Dalio, and Bridgewater, through the application of radical transparency unlock hidden accelerants for adult learning and higher-order skills attainment. At Bridgewater, you are asked to ‘expose your thinking.’ Importantly, you are surrounded by others who are doing the same, including the highest-level leaders. Through the communal practices of articulation, reflection, and exploration of abstract, complex, integrative knowledge spaces; you essentially get a masterclass from one of the best. This drives personal growth and real-time, on-the-job leadership development.

In some ways, Bridgewater is one big cognitive apprenticeship across investment, technology, and management thinking. You are learning these domains while being exposed to methods of innovation, discovery, and knowledge creation which are not covered in any textbook or classroom. You can turn on your TV screen (or iPad) and see multidimensional thinking in practice which awakens you to new and different modes of processing experience.

2. Reflections-in-Action:

“We do not learn from experience... we learn from reflecting on experience.” ― John Dewey

Reflections-in-action continues the theme of enabling adult learning and development, which is a core feature of organizations that intentionally align business, team, and community goals. At Bridgewater, the daily log is essentially an institutionalized work journaling exercise. As acknowledged by many studies of top performers, journaling is one key to compounding 10 years of experiences versus experiencing 1 year, 10 times.

Journaling and real-time reflections (both individual and collective) enable deeper work and deeper learning. These practices serve as internalization tools which transform Bridgewater’s ideas into our ideas; then into my ideas. The degrees of understanding, ownership, and expansion of insights, via continuous ‘ah-ha’ moments, are unmatched. You essentially have an entire organization applying action-inquiry methods to daily interactions.

3. Analogies and Near/Far Transfers:

“Because our educational system is hung up on precision, the art of being good at approximations is insufficiently valued. This impedes conceptual thinking.” ― Ray Dalio, Principles: Life and Work

“Since my world picture approximates reality only crudely, I cannot aspire to optimize anything; at most, I can aim at satisficing. Searching for the best can only dissipate scarce cognitive resources; the best is the enemy of the good.” – Herbert Simon

“Intuition is nothing more and nothing less than recognition.” ― Herbert Simon

The first two practices touch on deepening learning and development. This practice continues that focus while introducing an increased emphasis on collaboration across silos by achieving near-far transfers. By studying polymaths, cognitive scientists have proven that the use of analogies and metaphors enable their ability to understand and integrate content across multiple knowledge domains. They navigate between the precision within a domain and the fuzziness across domains to construct knowledge schemas which allow them to recognize patterns and similarities where others do not.

How does this relate to high-performing organizations?

It has been acknowledged by business leaders that the major impediments to artificial intelligence transformation are internal inertia and team/culture impediments. Barriers of understanding create barriers to collaboration. AI transformation is a collective exercise requiring new thinking from each participant and their respective functions.

Through the meticulous and intentional use of abstractions, objects, scaffoldings, and principles; Dalio enables an expanding group of individuals with different backgrounds and specialized knowledge to see similar constructs and to speak with common terms. By navigating communication between the precise and the fuzzy, Bridgewater has teams of scientists, technologists, investors, strategists, and designers problem solving together. Enabling team members to transfer knowledge from one area to a totally different area (a ‘far’ transfer) which fills in a critical missing piece to integrative excellence.

Not surprisingly, Bridgewater is at the frontier of using AI to transform investment, business, and organizational processes; expanding its collective Super-mind advantages.

4. Developing Bilinguals and Richer Possibilities:

“If you can define the problem differently than everybody else in the industry, you can generate alternatives that others aren’t thinking about.” ― Roger Martin ― Opposable Mind

By embracing cognitive diversity and enabling groups to coalesce into Super-minds with common symbols and constructs; Bridgewater generates not only more ideas but different ideas. A transformation occurs. Science and business discussions become scientific commercial discussions with all participants on equal footing. This integration or higher order meshing increases the possibility space. This enables increasing insights as components of output. In Bridgewater’s case, this manifests via superior investment returns and differentiated organizational design concepts (including their recent Operations co-development arrangement with Genpact).

The benefits to Bridgewater team members are at least twofold. First, by understanding thinking differences, Bridgewater can find ideal roles for team members to exercise their superpowers. Too frequently other organizations take the path of firing or not hiring someone because they do not fit a traditional template. It has been shown that the right job fit has huge impacts on happiness, well-being, and performance. Second, by valuing interdisciplinary integration, Bridgewater offers developmental and learning opportunities to grow in knowledge and functional areas that would be more difficult in other organizations.

The MIT Schwarzman College of Computing was created as “the world needs more Bilinguals”. Bridgewater illustrates the potential that is latent and available to be unlocked.

5. Experimentation and Generativeness:

“the single most powerful pattern I have noticed is that successful people find value in unexpected places, and they do this by thinking about business from first principles instead of formulas.” ― Peter Thiel, Zero to One: Notes on Start Ups, or How to Build the Future

I hope these are starting to blend together. As seamless integration may be the major idea at play. Next, are practices that enhance execution, experimentation, and innovation. The appreciation of difference, along with the creation of shared understanding, enables what is called “psychological safety”. Team members become more comfortable disagreeing or exposing original thoughts. Dalio, as a leader, further contributes to this by openly talking about his personal failures and limitations. Many of the principles are related to this objective.

Yet, I believe the true synergy comes when you combine safety and vulnerability, plus common language and collective engagement, along with an unmatched curiosity and commitment to generativeness (trying new things and being willing to fail). For example, Bridgewater has developed terms like “shaper” and “idea generator” to emphasize that they are in an innovation and insights creation business. Their leadership team has created an environment and the infrastructure for experimentation and rapid prototyping. Their discovery-driven operating models always capture learning from failures and keep moving forward. Leading from the top, senior executives conduct pre- and post-mortems that team members can access, learn from, and be encouraged by.

6. Holisms and Wisdom:

“The most important thing in communication is to hear what isn't being said.” ― Peter Drucker

Leadership development practitioners created the term ‘vertical development’ to reference an expanding category of capacities and competencies needed for 21st-century leadership. Business schools are using the framework 'Be-Know-Do' to re-design curriculum. Vertical development focuses on the ‘Be’ part. As Dalio would say in management meetings, “…it all comes from a place…”.

By putting unusual emphasis on ‘being’ or the essence from which machines, practices, and outcomes manifest; Dalio has demystified and invited Bridgewater leadership to think more about purpose and creating meaningful experiences with others.

Tactically, this is supported by offering transcendental meditation sessions for team members and by encouraging mindfulness practices (among other things). More important, is on a daily basis seeing wisdom-in-practice and the willingness to make principled, long-term oriented decisions over short-term opportunism.

In some ways, this is related to the Level 5 leader from Jim Collins. The meta-thinking and being exhibited by Dalio can relate to several observations made by adult development researcher Aliki Nicolaides. She has illustrated that cultivating a relationship with ambiguity (or “not knowing”) is a key differentiator of transformational leaders. Engaging ambiguity, not as something to avoid, but as a constant companion, a teacher, and a coach; is a way to expand your capacity to influence others and to transform societal institutions. At Bridgewater, via Dalio, this is modeled and encouraged both explicitly and implicitly.

Though all are related, what separates this one from "bilinguals" is a healthy dose of affective thinking. This is about becoming, as much as problem-solving, by being willing to look deep within.

7. Thinking across Time:

“Facts are rarely self-explanatory; their significance, analysis, and interpretation—depend on context and relevance.” – Dr. Henry Kissinger

“No two men living in the same time live in the same time.” ― Dr. Elliott Jaques

At Bridgewater, you see frontier ideas both conceived and put into practice. As the original quote from Goethe references, this is incredibly difficult to achieve. It requires a high degree of complexity. Thinking across time is another practice exhibited by Dalio which encourages the development of more nuanced understanding and more robust judgment.

Harvard Business School (via Harvard Law School) is recognized as a first-mover in the use of case studies for leadership education. Education for Judgment is a book where HBS professors talk about the strategies, approaches, and challenges of creating real-world contexts for teaching leadership agility. Foundational is openness to reality and acknowledgment of your limitations. By thinking across time, you realize you are one small iota and remain open to learning from the lived experiences of others, including those from other ages and spheres.

In some ways, this brings the practices full circle, as the idea of standing on the shoulders of giants is clear in Bridgewater’s history, methods, and successes.

One of Dalio's stated goals of publishing The Principles was to pass on observations so that others could benefit. My hope is that by contributing to this discussion we can lead to a wider awareness and a larger uptake of these win/win/win practices across organizations.

The practices are consistent with and integrated across knowledge domains including cognitive psychology, adult development, neuroscience, social psychology, sociology, anthropology, and others. The whole-brained individual wants to work in whole-brained organizations. Dalio and Bridgewater recognized this and implemented related practices at scale. To capitalize on similar opportunities, we need to develop leaders who can facilitate and enable these shifts across our organizations. When we look closely similar stories are told at places like Pixar, Apple, Spotify, and Salesforce. Ed Catmull openly expresses his love for Pixar, the organization, and the intentional designs he brought to its development. Not surprising, Pixar would appear on any shortlist of Super-mind enterprises and has the consistent, long-term results to support its case. Future-forward roadmaps are emerging, the challenge is ours to capitalize on them!

Fic: The Howling Abyss

So recent discussions of crack shipping, writing your ships, and generally the idea that I ought to put my money where my mouth is and damn well WRITE THE THING led me to this: Simon Fairchild / Nathaniel Lukas slash in the 1960s. It’s my favorite crack pairing for this fandom, and I’m very pleased by how this turned out.

The smoke hung heavy in the room, catching in the heavy drapes in ways Simon found aesthetically pleasing. Everything there was set up to please him. It was the little things in life that made it worth living.

Well, that wasn’t quite correct. It was the incomprehensibly enormous, unfathomable gods that lay just outside of the human ability to touch or comprehend that made life worth living, but the drapes were nice too.

Simon took a long, bubbling drag on his hookah, and smiled when the knock came at his parlor door. The old family estate had seen better days, and certain wings had needed closed off for various reasons--drafts, mice, ruin, and bodies being a few of the most common--but Simon was between children living at home, and so there was no one to hire help. They’d come back eventually, though, when one of them had a child of their own that needed educating in the family business.

“Come in, Nathaniel, dear,” he said.

The door opened, and Nathaniel Lukas entered with a moue of distaste. Simon beamed at him. Nathaniel was a determined bore, but he also understood Simon on a level even his own family couldn’t. They were both old souls, far older than they appeared, at least. They had seen the glory and the fall of the empire, and more wars than any one man ought to. It was good to have a time of peace again. A time of love and drugs, as well. Simon hadn’t had a proper period of indulgence since the 1880s and the year he’d spent in the loving arms of the green fairy (metaphorical, rather than the literal year he spent in green arms—very different experience, that).

Nathaniel was smartly turned out in his pressed trousers and jacket and thin tie. His hair was brushed back from his gaunt face, but at least he hadn’t slicked it down the way he had in the ‘40s. He’d looked like a bird caught in an oil spill for a decade.

“This pile wants demolished,” Nathaniel said, a scowl etching the lines around his mouth into deep voids.

Simon rather thought Nathaniel would like the metaphor, and shared it. Nathaniel’s scowl deepened, and Simon couldn’t decide if that was disapproval or vanity.

“And this room,” Nathaniel went on, “is disreputable. It’s beneath you.”

Beneath ‘us’, he meant. Beneath the two of them, ancient and strange and entwined since men wore silk hose and had buckles on their shoes. Beneath their families, too. Simon scoffed. He’d seen the monstrous Lukas estate in Kent, cold and tomb-like. He loved his shambling, overgrown home. He was thinking of turning it into a commune. That was a lovely idea. So many young minds to shape, and a few to send on truly grand adventures.

“This room is me, dear boy,” Simon said. He didn’t bother rising from the pile of pillows he had arranged near the hookah. He did open his arms to encompass the tatty drapes hanging from the ceiling, the cobwebs, the objects tucked into the corners and emanating the quiet, maddening power of distant worlds and incomprehensible geometry.

Nathaniel snorted and looked away from him. “What do you want?” he asked.

“That is the eternal question, isn’t it? What do I want? I want knowledge. I want to touch the face of the great and terrible gods. I want to lose my mind to them. I want their gazes to turn on me so that I might truly exist for that single moment before annihilation.” He dropped his voice to a lower register. “I want the void open before me, impossible and limitless. I want my mind to howl into that nothingness with no echo.” Simon watched Nathaniel’s eyelids flutter and his fist clench. He was so predictable. “I want to comprehend Nothingness on a level that humanity scurries and shrinks away from. I want to love it.” He patted the pillows next to him. “Come and lie down, Nathaniel. Weariness makes you look like a corpse.”

Nathaniel seemed to snap out of whatever half-daze he had fallen into at the mention of the Void. “That’s not why I’m here,” he said. “You said you found something. Did you find the Door? Is that why you called me?”

Simon patted the cushions again. “I will explain when you stop looming.”

Nathaniel hesitated the long moment it took to assert his own independence. It was delightful. Even more delightful, of course, was when he gave in and stalked over to the pillows, folding himself down upon them with a grace Simon had never possessed. No one ought to sit so ramrod straight on something that comfortable. “Explain,” he said.

Simon offered him the pipe.

Nathaniel, of course, looked furious. “Explain.”

“As you will,” Simon said, not wanting to push him too far. He was enjoying the visit. He enjoyed all their visits. “Unfortunately, it appears that I’ve found a window, rather than a door. A thinning of the veil, but not a proper tear.”

“I loathe it when you use such ridiculous terminology. You sound like one of those hippies.” He sniffed. “You look like one too. No man ought to wear that many beads.”

“Beads make lovely sounds. Hush. I was telling you about the window.”

“Go on.”

“It is more to your taste than mine, I’m sorry to admit. I must have tried to send five—no, six��of my little friends through before I realized that. Quite disappointing.”

Nathaniel looked hungry in the singular way that sharpened his cheekbones to razors and set his eyes burning. The tiniest prick of color showed itself on each of his cheeks. There was life in the old boy, yet. “The Void?” Nathaniel demanded. “Is it true, or limited?”

“Oh, these things may always be limited. It’s impossible to tell, and I haven’t your patience to explore it that much.”

“Show me.”

“Apparently you haven’t the patience, either.”

Nathaniel’s dry fingers dug into Simon’s cheek, and they were so close suddenly. Nathaniel was no longer sitting straight, but had twisted about, half atop Simon and doing his best to loom. He had aged since last they’d seen one another, if only in the deepening of the lines on his face and the greater amount of gray at his temples. They were slowly growing old, despite the immensity of their lives. Someday, perhaps in a half-century or so, they would look truly old, shrunk upon themselves and wrinkled all over. It didn’t matter. The body was trappings, decoration, but it wasn’t all of him. No more so than the gray skin and the ashy smell of old cloth and death was the whole of Nathaniel.

“Show me.” Nathaniel’s voice rasped like air out of dessicated lungs, and Simon couldn’t decide if he was ordering or begging. A bit of both, probably.

Did Nathaniel know how hungrily he pressed them together, how much Simon treasured these meetings? “Oh, darling,” Simon asked, “how long has it been?”

“I’ve been looking since the turn of the century. There’s been nothing. Everywhere I look, it’s noise and life and bustle. Even in the remotest possible locations there are animals and insects crawling over everything. It’s horrid. The world needs slowed.”

Simon nuzzled against Nathaniel’s cheek. It was a promising sign when he didn’t draw away. Simon took a long draw on his pipe and let the buzzing cannabis and tobacco and molasses and older, richer, stranger drugs buzz about his head until clarity swept through him. He brought his mouth close to Nathaniel’s, and let the smoke wash between them as he spoke. “The world needs cracked open like an egg, darling Nathaniel, spilling us all out into the wash of eternity,” he said. Nathaniel shuddered against him, sinking down so that Simon could rest back comfortably against the pillows. The haze of smoke and drugs hung between them, drawn in with every breath.

Nathaniel still needed to breathe. That was good to know.

“Endless and hollow and perfect,” Nathaniel said, as though they were summoning something with their words.

“And in that darkness, in that perfect, ecstatic void, They wait,” Simon whispered, rapturous.

“No.” Nathaniel’s hair was coming forward, and it brushed against Simon’s face as he shook his head. “No, there’s a void somewhere out there that even They haven’t touched. I will find it. I will.”

“Would you sink into its oblivion, becoming oblivion yourself?”

“Yes.” The word hissed between Nathaniel’s teeth. His face was set in a rictus grin, his bones pressing against Simon like a hungry ghoul. Nathaniel was horrid and wondrous, and Simon had absolutely no option but to kiss him.

They came together like this so rarely, crashing against one another perhaps twice a century since they started this game. Had Simon anticipated this result when he had rung Nathaniel up? He hadn’t thought so at the time, but there in the pillows it felt as though he had been waiting decades.

Nathaniel still kissed like he was starving, his cold lips drawing on Simon’s warmth. Simon never minded it; he tended to have warmth to share. He liked how dry Nathaniel was, and the soft rustling sounds his skin made as he moved. They were so good at hiding, the two of them, at pretending to be like the people they moved amongst, but they stood at a far remove even from their families. Simon could understand Nathaniel’s loathing of the scampering, butterfly-brief lives around them, even if he didn’t share it.

“Would you come with me?” Nathaniel asked between kisses. His skin was gray this close, his eyes a bit filmed. Simon was pleased he was so relaxed already. “Would you go with me into the dark?”

“Oh, my dear. It would rather defeat the point if there were two of us there, wouldn’t it?”

Nathaniel had a beautiful chuckle that he really ought to use more. “I suppose it would.”

“You find your perfect dark. You melt into it.” Nathaniel melted against him agreeably enough, all sharp angles and rustling bones. “I shall find my gate and finally commune with the great and unknowable beings beyond. I shall open the door and share Them with the whole world.”

“I will almost regret missing that,” Nathaniel said. “Almost.”

Then Nathaniel initiated a kiss, which was very rare indeed. The universe was full of wonders. “Show me,” he said against Simon’s mouth. “Show me the void.”

Simon reached out and drew the box close. There was a gamble inherent in this gesture that Nathaniel wouldn’t be so immediately taken by the window that he would take it and leave. But he seemed comfortable enough, and his kisses enthusiastic enough, that Simon thought he was likely to have the pleasure of Nathaniel’s company some hours more, at least.

The box itself was delightfully unassuming. One might even imagine it a small children’s music box, just large enough to pass a hand into. It was made of a rich brown wood, and was unadorned.

Simon broke the kiss with his free hand in Nathaniel’s hair. He was delighted when Nathaniel deigned to rest his head on Simon’s chest when he turned to look at the box. “That’s it?” he asked. He didn’t sound disappointed.

“It is. I heard about it through a contact, some young Indonesian chap, I think. He likes to find and sell this sort of thing. Exorbitantly priced, of course, but what does that matter?”

He flicked the latch open, and then gently opened the lid. The cold within it was aching, and he tipped the box up onto its side so Nathaniel could see.

It really was a window, he thought. Just a peek into another world, one made of endless, flawless ice, smooth and bright as a mirror. There was no proper horizon to it, but rather the ice itself seemed to curve up and become the cold, white sky of that empty place.

Nathaniel made a noise in his throat like he was dying. His hips rolled just a bit, and Simon adored him. He always adored Nathaniel, even when they were trying to kill one another. Maybe especially when they were trying to kill one another. Nathaniel was at his most magnificent when he was attempting some sort of vicious dispatch.

You moved from Nepal to Norway to study music. Which program did you choose and why Norway?

I had always wanted to go out of my country to study for discovering the different styles or the scene of music. Of course the tradition I come from is very rich and the process of learning never ends but my heart always said there is more! It started with the interest of learning different kinds of percussion traditions. Norway was the first country overseas I travelled for performing. It was a talent project in Forde folk music festival. I was 17 years old and very curious and keen to play with everyone. I got to get in touch with many good musicians and also travelled here the year later for a tour with the Local musicians. In that way, it was very natural for me to move to Norway since I already had some projects starting before I moved here. I got enrolled in a program called “Free candidate study program” where you basically build your own syllabus working together with the teachers. It is made for the applicants who are good but there Idea’s or the work doesn’t fit into any of the study programs that the school can offer. I am very happy that I could be under that program and the academy had such an open platform.

During your studies, were your peers interested in Nepalese traditional music?

Yes, they were interested in both Nepalese and the Hindustani traditional music. One of the reasons many people I have collaborated with chose to have me because they are also interested on the musical background I come from. I have also worked with different folk musicians where I mostly try to bring a lot of materials from the Nepalese folk tradition too.

Should western and non-western music still be treated differently in music education?

Is it time to get rid of the divide?I personally think the line between the western and non-western music has been fading out gradually since a couple of centuries. That includes the education too. People are very much open to all sorts of music and especially in times like now where we have access to reach to anything we like, the division is disappearing itself.

There shouldn’t be any boundary between any kind of genres but yet keeping its own identity is also important for deepening the learning process of any kind of music tradition. Richer the tradition is the more we can broaden up the way we bring it together. When it comes education, I don’t necessarily think we have to get rid of the division between categories but it’s definitely essential to have the programs where people can get deepened knowledge about the genres they want to explore which also helps in new creations.

In this, I would like to add that I have felt the division when it comes to the platform. Some venues want to have certain kind of music. Here, I am not talking about the fusion music we know about. Sometimes for a musician like myself who likes to bring in different inspirations together and create something new, a new sound, it can become little difficult to get the platform to perform it. It is not always very easy to categorize everything specifically and that becomes a challenge, I think.

What is your personal relationship with traditional Nepalese music?

I was born in Nepal, and the traditional music in Nepal is not there just for performing or expertise but is very much included in our daily life. It is as rich as the culture itself. Therefore, it is in my blood and I connect to it very easily and naturally. I also sometimes perform Nepalese classical or folk dance which is like meditation for me. It brings a different personality to me. In this last few years, I have been aware of the fact how the music from my own ethnic group is getting extinct and I really feel that I have a responsibility to protect it and bring it more forward in different musical context.

Should we guard and protect traditional music, make sure it’s written down and recorded for future generations?

Yes, Definitely! We have always learned from the old and that’s how we have been able come up with many interesting idea’s and creations. I feel that I am able to do what I am doing now and adapt to all other kinds of music because I have a strong bond my the traditional music or the tradition I have followed. My own tradition has always been a major inspiration for me in my work.

The link between all the artists booked for the Eastern Daze festival is that they reach a state of trance with their music through repetition.

I agree with that very much. I love the process of repetition. One thing I have experienced is that the repetition gives you time to really get into tones and rhythms and feel it. It’s like you let the vibration from the instrument do it works. In this process, I usually feel that I become so small and the sound just covers everything around me. It also puts a huge impact on the changes you bring after each repetition, which makes both musician and the audience feel what is going on.

How important is that state of trance for you? Does it give you energy?

Yes, it is important for me! Whenever I have had a chance to take my time, have repetitions and feel it, I am more myself and I become one with the music. Like they say in Sami vocal tradition “Joiking”, one doesn’t Joik about someone but one Joiks someone or something. In the same way, I feel what I play is the transformation of myself than I am playing something. Everything in nature and around us has its cycle and it repeats. It applies to music too and it definitely gives me a lot of energy during the performance or while I am practicing. Especially I do that very much when I practice

What’s the biggest difference between Asian and European music scenes?

I can’t talk about Asia in general but I feel that the European music scene is very open to innovations whereas in some parts of Asia we like to keep the tradition. Going far away from that is something not everyone can digest. You might sometimes be mistaken for it and people might think you do what you do because you are not skilled enough to carry on the tradition.

Tell me something about your sextet Avatar.

Avatar is a band that I put together a year ago. It is an outcome of all the new influences and forms of music I have encountered these last years. Especially the creative thinking, openness, free style of playing, spontaneity is something that I experienced a lot in the music scene here in Europe which I just love. At the same time, I can’t stop getting fascinated by all sorts of old traditional music I have come across. From the Tibetan prayers to the noise music, all of it is so powerful and gives so much that you have to somehow express it out in some way. So as a musician processing it out through my own compositions was the best way and that’s where Avatar comes in the picture.Most of the players are mostly occupied with jazz and improvised music. Some of them are also very much into folk music. I think the band gets different elements from the each member while sharing the same direction of creativity, which has given it a very distinctive sound.

What do you like most about improvisation?

Freedom!

When does improvisation go wrong?

For me, it is when I don’t feel like I can contribute to something that’s happening and that doesn’t mean not playing!

What’s in the future for you?

In the future… there is a lot of music! The first half of 2017 will be occupied by tours with bands that I play in. Avatar will be giving out its debut album in autumn 2017. I am also very glad to be doing solo projects, which people will get to listen to more of it in near future. There are always a lot of ideas popping in my head which I don’t always get time to work with. I really look forward to experiment all those ideas and hopefully, it will be something I can present it or share with people and experience it together with the music lovers.
