As if he were the Sun by ohfreckle Thor is a Russian nobleman and Loki is his spoiled rotten consort who’s drenched in jewels and furs and is constantly whispering conspiracies and scandal into Thor’s ear.
Craft by Hermaline75 Thor is a blacksmith who hates the injustice of witch trials and decides to put a stop to them.Typical that he would do this the one time they actually caught one.
We Could Be Heroes by shadow_in_the_shade It’s the 1970’s and a mistake in management sees Thor Odinson’s failing heavy rock band “Terminal Deafness” paired up with glam -goth -rock - experimental - Scandinavian group “Illusion’s Destiny” in one of the greatest mis-matches of the glam rock age. Chaos ensues.
In the Heart of Cherry Hill by needleyecandy After a disastrous whaling voyage, Thor decides to seek employment on land. There are few opportunities for a man of his skills, though, and he finds himself living in such dire poverty that he has nearly resigned himself for a return to the sea, when he spies a rather unusual advertisement. The position proves to be of a sort he had never imagined existed. As is his new employer.
You Pull Me Out of Line (Make Me Beg and Make Me Chase) by sexualthorientation Thor, a Roman general in the Emperor’s army, becomes infatuated with Loki, a young pleasure slave. Smut ensues. Naturally.
Shadow in the Sun by shadow_in_the_shade The year is 14 AD, Thor is a Gladiator in the Roman Colosseum, a captive from the wars against Germany, Loki is a Roman Nobleman, or something that looks a lot like it and everything Thor hates. When Loki sees Thor in the arena he knows he has to have him.
Resurrection by Hermaline75 Edinburgh, 1826.In the depths of alcoholism, Thor finds himself employed by an unusual man.
Facing the Vast by needleyecandy England has just declared war on Napoleon, Naval captains are winning their laurels on a daily basis, and Thor’s ship is ordered to the South Seas to seek out a lost scientific vessel. It is an assignment for an old man, but the Admiralty will hear no reason. All hope of glory lost, he takes to sea in a foul temper.Loki is an artist employed by the naturalist who accompanies HMS Hope on the expedition of rescue and research. He is to make quick and accurate sketches of those plants that catch his employer’s eye. For the first time in his life, the rest of his time is his own.Back home, their paths never would have crossed, but life at sea is different, and their shared journey brings many kinds of discovery.
Stains by karuvapatta Thor visits his brother’s art studio.
…as schoolboys from their books by Hermaline75 Loki is employed in Odin’s household to tame and teach his spoiled son, Thor, who at 16 has learned to charm and/or whine his way to everything he wants. And once he gets over the shock of a tutor who won’t put up with his usual tactics… Thor wants.
Fountain by needleyecandy There’s a new boy working at the soda fountain, and he is simply the most.
paradise by the dashboard light by sexualthorientation Thor’s eyes flick over to the kid bagging his groceries. He’s got a nice…everything. He’s lean, this kid. Pale and…almost pretty. Thor likes the way his black hair twists into little curls around his ears. He looks up at Thor and blows a big pink bubble with his gum.Thor has a hard time looking away, which seems to suit the kid just fine, because he hasn’t stopped looking either.
sharp by thorkidumpster thor needs only one word from loki to close his investigation, but loki must have his payment first.
Cavemen Thor and Loki by Icemaidenstory I was away when it happened. The gold ones from the north came down to our valley and killed my kin. They slaughtered them and spent the night sleeping on their bedding. I knew this because I returned in the middle of their feasting. At first I only saw the light of home, I was among them before I realised, before they realised. For a moment I stood frozen, then I ran.
Wergeld by rayemars It was springtime, and Thor had taken his men war-faring to seek goods for themselves; but raiding a foreign temple brought him far more than he’d ever imagined–in either goods or trouble.
The Novitiate by needleyecandy Loki is far too high-born to be executed for his crimes. Instead he is forced into a monastery. The night before he is to take his orders, he receives a visitor who changes everything.
Mind-Forg’d Manacles by needleyecandy The Roman Republic demands new lands, and the army, led by Caesar, is eager for glory. It is customary for them to take slaves from newly conquered peoples, which is how Loki, a Celt, and Thor, a German, find themselves torn away from everything they’ve known and loved. As slaves of Rome, the two boys respond to their captivity in strikingly different ways. As free men, their old ways of surviving become fetters. When they find each other, freedom finally begins.
Stranger in a Strange Land by umakoo He was a big bear of a man. His shoulders alone seemed to take the space of two grown men where he was seated on his high stool, leaning against the counter. His long, blond hair was half-hidden under a black fur-felt Stetson, his face covered in thick, bushy bristles.Loki drew his hand back, and as if sensing his curious gaze, the man turned his head to glance over his shoulder. His blue eyes met Loki’s from beneath the rim of his hat, and Loki felt his stomach jolt at the contact.Set during the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 19th century. Thor is a Norwegian prospector, Loki entertains at a saloon.
Our kingdom come by amberfox17 Vikings (TV) inspired AU ficlets: Thor is a Viking Jarl who has attacked the lands of Loki, the King of Anglo-Saxon Wessex. Loki invites Thor to join him in his private baths, as he has an interesting proposition for him…
Stranger Like Me by amberfox17 Thor is Tarzan; Loki is the Victorian gentleman literally swept off his feet in the jungle.
The Disappearance of Miss Nebula by Hermaline75 Vanishing women are a standard part of magic shows, but they are generally expected to reappear eventually. People don’t just step into boxes and never come out.Right?
Even Though You Fool Your Soul by Hermaline75 After two years of peace, the notorious highwayman known as the Shadow returns to terrorise the Asgard estate, much to the dismay of its young regent Thor. But what does the thief want with him in particular?Meanwhile, Loki takes a break from his lucrative life of crime to play a little game with an old friend. But is he the cat or the mouse?
Diarkis by miikkaa_xx Thor, a Greek warrior, invades a temple and takes a Trojan priest for his own.

God Delusion
By naming this little essay after Richard Dawkins’ well-known book, it is not too hard to guess that I plan on wandering off boldly and courageously into the controversial topic of atheism and religion, and their opposition. Given that this topic is vast and easy to get lost into, I would only like to highlight some of religion’s main issues, and discuss them as objectively and calmly as it is humanly possible. Bashing religion -no matter how easy and fun it would be- is not the point in my writing rather it is only a discussion.
First of all, we should take a look at some of the notions we are going to deal with. For example, the word atheism originates from the connection of a- (meaning without) and theos (meaning god), creating: atheos (without god). Many people falsely think that atheism is a belief system itself, but it is merely the lack of belief in any sort of deities. Most atheist do not actively disbelieve in a god or gods, they simply do not think that there is enough concrete evidence that would suggest the existence of such being, but if someone would provide such evidence, most atheists would be open to it. Of course the spectrum is a little bit wider and this is where for instance agnosticism comes into play. With the word agnostic we refer to someone who thinks there is no way to know if there is a god or not. After examining the meaning of these we can quickly realize that it is not entirely necessary to choose between the two of them. Moreover, it is the exact opposite. In my -and in majority of atheists- opinion, the most rational position to take is being an agnostic atheist, saying that we cannot possibly know with any certainty if god exists, therefore we do no not believe in it. And then there are the extreme sides: When you do not know if there is a god, but you believe that there is a god, you are a theist, or when you know that there is no god, therefore you do not believe in it, you are called antitheist. We can immediately recognize that both theism and antitheism requires a huge amount of arrogance.
Ah, so many tiring expressions. But this is how language works. It is quite important to have words referring even to these abstract concepts. And then the question arises: Is it even necessary to have words referring to people who do not believe in a higher being? Isn’t it the natural state of a human mind? Young children mostly become religious only because their parents are religious too, and they do not start to believe in a certain god, because they have come to the logical conclusion that their parents’ chosen deity is in fact exists. There is a strong correlation between the parents’ religious beliefs and their childrens’ beliefs and there is also an uncanny connection between a person’s place of birth and his\her religion. The mind of young children is pliable, six year olds are not trying to question everything or form a complex view of the world, they are ready to learn and they will believe what their parents are telling to them.
Religious people tend to -for some strange reason- not see how big effect your place of birth have on what religion and god you will chose or will be chosen for you. If you were being brought up in India, you are most probably Hindu, just like almost 80% of all people living there. If you are European, chances are high that -if you are religious- you are Christian or part of a Christian family. But we can go back in time a little and realize that if we would have been Viking soldiers we would have believed in Thor, Loki, Odin etc..., and that if we are to die in a battle, we would join either Odin in Valhalla, or Freyja in Folkvangr. Having been lived in Ancient Greece would have meant believing in the 12 main Olympians: Zeus, Hera, Ares etc..., and in other important deities like Hades or Heracles. Nowadays, it would be rather hard to find someone who genuinely believes in these gods, although, they are not that different from the ones we have now. But imagine the reaction people would have if you would announce that from this day on, you will worship the Ancient Greek gods and occasionally sacrifice a domestic animal at the altar for them while saying a prayer.
I have always found praying to be an interesting concept, a sort of meditation, that doesn’t hurt anyone and beneficial for the individual who is doing it. In the Bible there is no specific description of how someone should pray, and we can see different people praying in a different manner. But why is that when a child is talking to an imaginary friend he or she created (maybe out of loneliness), it is not considered normal but when he\she does the same to a god -who is as far as who know is just as imaginary- it is acceptable. The problem with praying is that if you are doing it for the purpose to wish for something from one of the gods of Abrahamic religions, your prayer is logically pointless. For instance, scriptures state that these gods are omniscient, meaning that they know everything that has happened, will happen and is happening right now, and supposedly they all have a predetermined plan as of what’s going to happen in our life. The problem is that if I ask for something to happen, it will either happen, or it will not, but if God is omniscient, he already knows the outcome of every possible event (and knows what I will pray for), and if he also has a plan for everyone that will not be changed because someone asks for it (because God’s plan is the best plan), then praying is utterly pointless, we have no influence over the outcome of an event and the story of our life.
Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit. (Psalm 147:5)
A man’s heart plans his way,      But the Lord directs his steps. (Proverbs 16:9)
The question of morality is a recurring issue in discussions. Both side has their own points to make against each other, but first of all we shall take a look at where morals come from. Why do we feel good when we do good things to another person or bad when do a bad thing? Why do we even feel the need to act selfless? Long story short, there is a scientific theory for it, called altruism, which (in the context of morality) occurs when an organism acts in such a way that it benefits another organism's chances of survival at the cost of its own. Like trying to save someone who got stuck in a burning house. Is it considered morally good? Totally! One possible explanation of why would we develop such a behavior is what we call reciprocal altruism, a kind of quid pro quo, tit for tat, where if animal A does something for animal B, the opposite can also be expected, but if animal B does not return the favor, it won't get anything from others any time soon. Grooming monkeys are a good example for this, but the selfless act of grooming another monkey is rooted in the selfish desire of wanting to be groomed. Numerous examples can be thought of, taken from our real life situations, where the same behavior can be noticed. Further kinds of altruisms can also be noticed, like parental, kin altruism, which is pretty self-explanatory, and the best example is of course: a mother’s love. Evolution works at the level of the genes, we are evolutionarily programmed to ensure the survival of not necessarily ourselves, but our genes.
This is the scientific answer to the question of how can we have objective moral standards without God as a standard. Part of it is just genetic, programmed, not fully in our own control. Also, we can look at morality from a more philosophical angle. Christians believe that we can distinguish right from wrong because we were created in the image of God, and that we gained knowledge of right and wrong through original sin. But is it really true that morality is objective, and is there an unchangeable guideline to it, just how a lot of people think the Bible is one? Even if we would like to believe it, morals tend to be ever-changing. How we thought about human\animal sacrifice, women, slavery, homosexuality etc… has changed or is changing, it is often deeply religious people who are having a hard time accepting these changes. And God himself can act in ways that is far from our standards and understanding of ‘good’. (Hardening the Pharaoh’s heart, so he can punish him for having a hardened heart is just one example of the many). Not to mention that most of the Old Testament’s rules are now not followed by religious people as those now just sound downright ridiculous. Maybe there is a perfect moral system with which we can achieve the well-being of as many people as possible while minimizing the harm we cause to each other, but until we find this, morals will changing inevitably.
We could have a long discussion surrounding the topic of whether it is more beneficial to a human being to live with blissful ignorance, without looking around and realizing one’s insignificance, and with the belief that being here is not coincidental, and we do indeed serve a higher purpose with our presence here on Earth or to face the hard reality that we are but a speck of dust on one of many -to put it mildly- stars, floating around in space, but heading nowhere in this vast darkness. And how could we blame someone, how could we not sympathize with a person who would like to avoid the harsh reality to make life just a little bit easier. It is in our nature, we long for a purpose, our mind would like to fill in the gaps, and oh, how convenient it can be when someone spoon-feeds us a comforting thought about our existence.
"Better by far to embrace the hard truth than a reassuring fable.” (Carl Sagan)
