'CILLIAN Murphy has made history today as he became the first Irish-born performer to win a Bafta Award for Best Actor.

The 77th British Academy Film Awards took place today at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

Cillian took home the golden gong for his leading role as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Oppenheimer.

The 47-year-old accepted the award on stage from Cate Blanchett and said: "Oh boy, holy moly, thank you very, very much Bafta."

The Cork native went head-to-head with fellow Irishman Barry Keoghan for Saltburn, as well as Bradley Cooper for Maestro, Colman Domingo for Rustin, Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers, and Teo Yoo for Past Lives.

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer had swept up 13 nominations.

Oppenheimer won in seven different categories including Best Actor, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr's role in the film, Best Director for Christopher Nolan and Best Film.
