• vectornator is now linearity curve and subscription based for more functions. the free version is very limited (only can have three active projects) with a good amount of restrictions (namely on exports). (note this is all based off the ipad version, i haven’t opened the macos version since the change but i imagine it’s more or less the same)

• i know this is an adobe alternative post, but photoshop elements is a one time purchase and you have it forever. it does not require creative cloud to function (will make you sign into an adobe account for registration and such, but cc is not vital).

hi hey holy fuck i'm done with this. I tried to render for the first time following a "15 minute" tutorial and my noob ass turned it into a 3 hour learning experience. But now I have Narinder's reference for The Risen Lamb and the Fallen God! Rambles under readmore

SO I BARELY DRAW because I started learning how to draw like... May of last year, and then went bonkers over the summer making lots of progress and once the school year started in august I dropped it to focus on writing... and have drawn basically 1 thing in between then and now. Anyway. Last week I remembered, oh yeah, I used to draw sometimes. And suddenly had an all consuming urge to practice again.

And you know what? I forgot how fucking FUN drawing is. I take it much less seriously than I do my writing so my technique for now is pretty much "go ham and try a bunch of shit because you're getting practice and having fun with it anyway". and it IS fun until I try to do a specific thing and can't figure out how so thanks to those who tuned in to my stream tonight to see me push through the frustrating part of finishing this LMAO. uh according to the krita file this took me 13 and a half hours

If you didn't catch it a while back, the one thing I drew during my kinda-art-hiatus was my Lambert reference! Normal outfit, casual outfit (that they sometimes wear while off-duty, usually when visiting Ratau or just hanging out alone), and wedding outfit ^^

...Which means now that I have my narilamb references I can commission my friends. i have a few people who i already plan to open my wallet for.

This is a great question! Honestly, I've been wanting to make a environmental piece with whimsy, food, and fashion, for like.. 2 years? when thats done it will probably be my favorite piece LMAO but for the time being? let me go through my venture maidens folder

This applies to most aspects of my life, but I don't really have a top "favorite" thing in most areas! I mean, Madoka Magica Rebellion is my favorite movie (very closely rivaled by Coraline), but that's an outlier. In every other case, I have a collection of my favorites with one coming out on top depending on how I'm feeling that day.

It's also influenced by eras, I think. I don't want to compare my most recent art to my venture maiden 2020 art, because I've improved and will prefer my newer style. However, there's still a sense of nostalgia and homeliness to some of my old art that can bring it above the rest, you know?

Going through my venture maiden campaign 1 folder, here's probably my favorites:

These two are from 9/3/20 ("sawYEAH.png") and 11/23/22 ("arent you tired of being nice.png"). I think Sawyeh's relatively simple design has always lend itself well to gesture drawing, especially with the relatively simple silhouette shape. Theyre just fun :) I like them a lot.

I don't know if I'd rank a lot of my campaign 1 art among my favorites, not because I think less of the campaign but because a lot of that time period was me feeling my way into an art style. I see it as the time period after I started feeling confident in my art, but before I kind of became the "unique facial features and color jitter" artist.

For fun (and food), here's some of my unposted campaign 1 stuff.

Here's some 2020 (and 2019, apparently?) photoshop files! I like some more than others. None of them have previews since they're photoshop files, so I'm opening them blind in krita. Note the layers/colors may seem off, it's probably because the clipping masks and editing layers break between programs.

From 10/21/20, technically in 2020 but close to 2021. I think it's unique because it starts to show a shift to more.. unique concepts, I guess? It was of a water elemental who uses an ice mask to mimic having a face. It's cool, I should revisit it.

Aspec Alastor?

i personally don't enjoy seeing the majority of alastor shipping content and will never make any serious shipping art. for cursed reasons or crackshipping? sometimes. (heck i don't even know how to draw a kiss properly).

Why is your art style so inconsistent?

lmao so i actually switch between using a bunch of drawing tools with varying proficiencies. i tend to do doodles on procreate or clip studio paint, and animate on krita. i would say that i'm probably best at using clip studio and krita since im more used to using a drawing tablet than a tablet screen. also i just like drawing in multiple styles for my personal art

the art thing i use is krita!! i like the way that program works + it has good animation tools which helps with some stuff~

i use a modified version of krita's pixel brush, (i hit f5 to open the brush editor and set the shape to square instead of circle)

my process is mostly trying to get as much done as i can in as few layers as possible?

a LOT of my panels are just first draft rough sketches (this is to help me get pages out at something resembling a reasonable rate, because i have the constitution of a poor victorian orphan chimney sweep)

i generally just have a colour/value layer, a rough sketch layer, and then another layer for dialogue/text/what have you. (though i'll often end up using more if it's just convenient for other stuff to have it's own layer, or if i'm having trouble drawing something specific and just wanna keep trying at it without effecting the stuff around it)

oh and i do huge swathes of the comic in just one file because i'm insane

(though for pages with animation i tend to just copy and paste the page's layer group into it's own new file and do the animation there because i severely doubt krita can handle BOTH animation, AND like a hundred fucking layers at the same time)

OH and i do all my typesetting in GIMP because krita doesn't let me do non-antialiased text for some reason

for this i just type it out in gimp, 14pt courier new as our god homestuck intended

(and depending on what i'm using it for i'll probably scale it up an integer amount)

and then i paste it into my image and usually rotate or transform it a bit (with nearest neighbour scaling <3)

hi! i’m making this because i was inspired by maxpawb’s post i saw on toyhouse , which then led me to look at all my own art that is still somehow intact in my storage. this only details stuff from when i started posting online, not from when i started drawing traditionally as a wee lad. partially because my sketchbooks are lost and partially because i never really wrote down dates on my art to begin with.

a lot of dates are lost, due to the aforementioned problem of me not writing things down.. and also i have awful dissociative memory problems so there’s way too many gaps in my life. but i really did want to do this to see how much i could find & how much i could recollect.

i learned how to use the smudge tool on ibispaint at this time and thought i was the coolest bitch on the block for my blending

may 2019, i was like 12

my return to amino (and brief period on deviantart, which i never used again lmao) i was specifically on wings of fire amino + warriors amino. i was obsessed with airbrush shading.

this is one of my first fursonas which was a wings of fire fanflight called kitsunewings or smth. and also my first species character (he predated the dragon), a bayfox, which was drawn in krita. i never used krita again after this. coincidentally, i was also never active in bayfoxes after submitting him.

i crawled back to ibispaint no matter how many new free programs i tried.. (also tried firealpaca once. i couldn’t even figure out how to draw a line…)

the rise of my longest lasting fursona. she got stolen on a shitty app called anime maker once. i can’t remember if she’s older than the dragon, andromeda, but her older iterations definitelt are. this character was just the FIRST first fursona that i actually called that, since i didn’t even really know what a furry was at first

my first commission that i sold for like 30 deviantart points (i only used the site for commission purposes, as mentioned before i never really used it lmao)

also i tried to make a closed species on wings of fire amino. second image. it was terribly stressful ; this was around the time i met my longest lasting group of friends (hi freak bin! 5 years <3) and.. some of the worst people i’ve ever met in my life at the same time, LMAOOO

also here’s this kokichi ouma dog i made before i even knew what danganronpa was. i would find out much later, unfortunately

march 2020, still 12 (cause of my august birthday 😒)

there’s a really big gap in my files here. sad! my art kicks into gear at this point tbh, i like how i did the lines. wish i had the energy for such clean lineart still :-(

i think around this time i lost contact with the people who were my groomers (which i would realize later) and i’m thankful that i don’t even remember what their names are.

i was happy after my birthday because 13 was one of the worst years of my life. literal constant spirals and breakdowns because this is when i realize i was, in fact, groomed. i’m well and handling it better now.

uhhhh none really? I don't really react viscerally to ships I think. When I see ship art I kinda just go "oh, cool art" regardless of whether I "see" the ship or not yanno? So I don't really Dislike any ships in the first place.

I guess if you stretch it FH kinda?? I've always not been able to understand fluffy FH stuff since I watched 3L first before Empires but then I realised I have a lot of fun thinking abt/drawing/writing toxic!FH so uh I like them now in a messed up way I suppose lol

25. common fandom complaint that you're sick of hearing

I guess just anything in the "people need to draw more x or write y more like that" genre is a bit tiring. I can't help but feel like alot of those takes come from ppl who.. don't really make fan content themselves?

Like, keeping in mind we have very limited time and energy to create fan content outside of our jobs and school and whatnot, it's pretty understandable why alot of us just stick to drawing our faves. Also the nature of mcyt fanart means depicting someone accurately means seeing their videos or at least them in other ppls videos first and that's even more time sink etc, etc

Also also fanart/fic is limiting. I would love to draw one (1) picture that sums up every facet of someone's personality but I physically cannot do that. If I'm zeroing in on one pathetic jimmy moment that doesn't mean he's just a wet paper bag permanently (no one's complained abt my jimmy this is just an example).

It just seems.. a teeny bit entitled to me demanding more of what you want to see out of people who are just making stuff for themselves and feel brave enough to share it (I could go on abt the nature of fanart/fic here but that's a whole nother train of thought lmao)

Fr if everyone else is stupid and doing it wrong why aren't You opening up google docs or krita and doing it yourself. None of us are studios with manpower we're just guys with drawing tablets sometimes.

also sorry it took me a bit- I have... quite a few projects I'm shoving myself into...

aaannyyyway lemme try and go into more detail (sorry about the last explanation not helping) using this WiP of phosphor

once the color and lineart is in, I usually go immediately into shading (Phosphor is the exception to this rule, as her wings and horns require a lot more work than just colors)

with the shading, I usually go with a somewhat dull purple, doing cell shading to start with.

and then I change the layer with the purple to 'multiply' and mess with the opacity until I get it how I like

thats only half the shading though! afterwards, I copy the shading layer and paste it in above, making sure its aligned with the original layer, and then I throw it through a gaussian blur

the difference is subtle, but I like how it gives just a tiiinny bit more depth to the shading :3

but after that, I move into one of my favorite parts- the shiny bits! the highlights aren't done that much differently from the shading, honestly.

I start off with just some white on another layer, but unlike the shading, I only do it on the shiny kinds of materials, in Phosphor's case, her armor. I'll also sometimes do it with fur, and definitely hair, but in the case of astrals I usually leave their fur and feathers alone unless I'm doing some REALLY dramatic lighting.

but once the highlights are drawn, I just do the same as I did with the shading- except instead of a multiply layer, I change it to overlay

tbh though, unlike most of my shading methods, I like to boost the shiny on phosphor even more (since she's, ya know, a goddess of starlight lmao)

So in that case, I do the same as I do with the shading layers- I copy past a second shiny layer in! it takes a little more editing to get just right though than the shading.

First, I lower the opacity of the new layer- don't want it toooo shiny!

for this specific pic, I think 51% opacity is the sweet spot.

and then I go into the layer settings, and slap an inner glow in! usually set to white and overlay (or in this case, Linear dodge) again

and then, on the same layer, I slap on an outer glow! this time white (again) with overlay (again)

usually the opacity kinda depends, along with the spread and size. it all depends on how large of a picture you're working with- same with the gaussian blur for the second shading layer!

aaand now we have this! admittedly, I think the highlights are missing something, but this is pretty much it! mind you, how this all works/looks also depends on what art program your using! I'm personally using photoshop, so the layers and interface is going to look pretty different from someone using, say, Krita, or Sai. buut that pretty much covers it! admittedly, I'm probably also going to be playing around with the highlights for a little bit, as I'm not too sure about how the gem bits look, but that's pretty normal lmao.
