David 8
So David 8 has always been so intriguing for me. He's an android an artificial being who's programed to feel and be like humans. And yet he's a bit human at times. His childlike curiosity of things he finds interesting like Shaw and her dreams about her father. Or his favorite movie and later on the black goo and what it could do to various lifeforms.
He's a bit human most times because of the curiosity until it gets morbid.
Oh and yes I do believe he did love Shaw in his own morbid ways of course. See when Weyland was alive David needed to follow his directive which was make Weyland happy and do everything and anything he says to make that happen. But then he died and that essentially made him a "free man". The purpose of his directives are gone and now he can have his own directives for himself and not for anyone. He can satisfy his curiosities without consequences of delaying Weyland's wishes because the old chap is dead. He can do what he want. And he did in fact do all he wanted.
Even Shaw was not safe from his selfish wants. When he developed deep seated love for her after she put him back which was a long time coming as he's always favored her the most for her little kindness towards him unlike the other crew or Weyland and Vickers. She'd thank him despite it being his job. She's not unnecessarily mean to him like everyone else. It made sense why he'd love her. To experience kindness is to eventually crave it. Pine for it. And to David, Shaw was probably the embodiment of it because he never experienced it from anyone other than her.
Because he's emotionally immature and obviously his programming has been tweaking long before shit hit the fan he doesn't really know how love works. He doesn't know that love is about caring, and respect for your loved ones. David doesn't know how to love others because Weyland doesn't either. Weyland only loves himself and prioritizes all his wants over everyone else's even his own daughter. It once again makes sense why David is the way he is because he's as Weyland quoted "And I made him in my own image so he could be perfect. So he would never fail."
David is a much worse Weyland I guess?? Just more committed to experimental monstrosity because he's more intelligent. My guess is that after spending time with Shaw and experiencing her kindness over time he started to delude himself that he's something special to her. He means something to her like Holloway meant something to Shaw. He deludes himself into thinking they're some sort of couple. And what do life long devoted couples usually have? A baby. Or Children.
So like a man thinking a child would fix things between him and his wife he thought of making Shaw a mother once again. Something Shaw would never be but most distressingly became one because of an alien babe. But this time he would be the father not Holloway. So he experimented on her, he was creating "life" from her parts and making her more resilient as well. Keeping her alive for her to witness their perfect "children" come to life. Eventually she succumbs and dies, which leaves him distraught. Which is why we get the scene of him crying in Covenant when he talks to Walter near her grave. She was never meant to die, she was only meant to mutate so she wouldn't die when he took from her. She was supposed to be with him forever with their "children". Yet she did and even then he doesn't regret mutating her, he'd probably thought of going about it another way to ensure she lives but he'd still experiment on her.
David's new directive is his wants and not even his love could stop these directives, he wanted to create life with Shaw as they both couldn't on their own. He couldn't be a father because he was an artificial being and Shaw couldn't because she's infertile. And because he thought Shaw wanted a baby, so he was going to use her to create their baby. Their special baby. I think that's also why he reacted so strongly when the neomorph was shot at because this was his baby with Shaw. One of the only things that carries Shaw is these monstrosities he's created from her. They're a reminder of Shaw and his brilliance.
#alien franchise#alien movie#prometheus#alien covenant#alien prometheus#prometheus 2012#david 8#elizabeth shaw#weyland yutani#xenomorph#neomorph#protomorph#Sorry I rambled way too much in this post#David is is just my favorite in prometheus#but i wouldn't wanna be near him#bros gonna feed me to his monster babies or experiment on me#ain't no way#also if you asked me a hear me out that doesn't look like a hear me out I'd say David 8#he's a little psycho but I'd def smash if given the chance#I wish I can dissect his thoughts and his little android brain

what are your favorite "wuxia-adjacent" kung fu movies?
hm okay so i started compiling a list but once it got to almost 50 films i realized that i was doing that thing again where i get too excited about recommending shit and go way overboard, plus i was starting to split hairs as to what counts as wuxia and i hate getting fussy about genre delimitations. so instead i'm going to just recommend three films that feel wuxia-adjacent to me and that i particularly love. in this case i'm thinking of movies that contain gravity-defying martial prowess and larger than life characters and stories, but aren't full-on Ti Lung in a big robe flying around on wires chopping up 500 dudes style wuxia--which obviously i also love but i'm sticking to the question's parameters here.
The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter - this and the next film were both directed and choreographed by Lau Kar-leung, who for my money is probably the greatest martial arts director of all time, or at least in very close competition with Yuen Woo-ping. the fights are great, every single character in this film is at an 11 on the intensity meter the whole time, and the final setpiece in this is one of the most insane things ever put to film.
Dirty Ho - most comedy in martial arts films is tolerable at best and excruciating more often than not. this has probably the best gag hit-rate of any kung fu comedy i've seen, and also has some of the all time greatest scenes of dudes having deadly martial arts duels while pretending to not fight, which is a favorite of mine. also like the last film this stars Gordon Liu who fucking rules.
Crippled Avengers - had to include a Venom Mob film in here. directed by Chang Cheh, the king of old school Shaw Bros gorefests, this one has a perfect mix of absurd bloody violence, superhuman stunts, and roiling homoerotic tension. i could just as easily recommend Five Element Ninjas which is also a classic Cheh/Venom Mob bloodbath but if i had to choose just one i'd have to go with this.
anyone who's into classic martial arts cinema is likely already very familiar with these films but while i considered going for some deeper cuts, these were the ones that really kickstarted my own journey into the glorious world of Shaw Bros martial arts films and are thus very close to my heart.
while i'm at it, i am going to include a bonus recommendation for what assuredly counts as just a straight up wuxia but it's an all-timer: Duel to the Death. at one point in this film there's a giant ninja that explodes into a bunch of regular sized ninjas. another time a guy's head gets cut off, delivers a monologue, and explodes. perfect film. i love movies.

I don't care what your thoughts on the new Mario movie are, I just wanna talk about the old one. It's unironically one of my favorites because:
Banger of a cast
Dennis Hopper as King Koopa
Bob Hoskins as Mario
John Leguizamo as Luigi
Fiona Shaw as Lena Koopa
Francesca P. Roberts as Bertha
Mojo Nixon as Toad
Banger of a soundtrack
Walk the Dinosaur — Was (Not Was)
Love is the Drug — Divinyls
Breakpoint — Megadeth
just to name a few
Banger of an aesthetic
Cyberpunk/industrial dystopia Mushroom Kingdom
With dinosaurs
And slimy moldy fungus everywhere
Honorable Mention
The gall to make their last names be Mario
Yoshi as a hyperrealistic dinosaur is adorable
So much pleather!
The nightclub scene is extremely bold for the movie that it is
This movie is why we have Princess Daisy (wrong memory finds its way into the post after edits)
I did see the Nintendo Direct about the new one, and my big take away is I really wanna rewatch Super Mario Bros (1993)
#mario#super mario bros#mario movie#also of course chris pratt really phoned it in#like the rest of the trailer was pretty okay except for chriss pratt

umm.. is it ok to ask for tokoyami fit of him and his s/o waltzing in the air at night??
Of course! Sorry, it took a hot minute- I like to keep *reader* quirkless for self-insert reasons, so for a while, this fic was....well....
I had Hawks carting Tokoyami around while Tokoyami struggled to keep hold of the reader... There was no dancing, they just dangled there like turds in the wind while Hawks sings Belle Notte from the ‘Lady and the Tramp’ spaghetti kiss scene to try and set the mood for his birb bro...ಠ_ಠ
If you don’t get what I mean, I made a visual for you:
Luckily I remembered Uraraka- Idk why I forgot about her in the first place- but here, I present you with a SFW fic of about 1000 or so words......*Drumrolls*......
MOONLIGHT WALTZ
Moonlight streamed through the curtains of your open window to reflect off your tv screen. The night was warm but you huddled under your fluffy comforter, using it to cover your mouth and muffle your giggles.
Popcorn peppered your corner of the sofa and scattered the carpet below but your attention was rapt on the screen before you. You leaned forward to catch the lyrics of your favorite song, keeping the volume low so as not to alert the dorm of your guilty pleasure.
Thumbelina, your favorite childhood movie played in your room at least once a month.
You knew every word and song- you still cried during the scene where the fairy prince is caught in the ice. The movie held so many pleasant memories you couldn't help but indulge when the mood struck.
Rustling hit your ear from the side but you ignored it, grasping the remote to turn up the volume a few precious notches as your favorite song started. You blushed, scooting to the edge of your seat to sing along with the movie.
“Let me be yoOouuur wiIiIIingssss! Let me be your ooOOoonly loOoove!” You were tone-deaf but that didn’t stop you from belting out lyrics. “Everything your dreEAaammMming of will soOoOon be- SHIT!”
You shrieked, tumbling headfirst off the sofa in a popcorn covered heap of blankets and limbs.
“TOKOYAMI!” Your boyfriend stood by the door holding his beak as he trembled with laughter, Dark Shadow was no better as he rolled on the floor with a transparent hand clasped over his mouth and a fist smacking against the floor. “When did?... How long have you been standing-”
“THE WHOLE TIME!” Dark Shadow burst with laughter, you curled the blanket over your head wishing you could crawl into a hole. “The whole- Your singing! Oh god, babe!” Dark Shadow feigned wiping tears from his glowing yellow eyes.
Your relationship with Tokoyami was only a couple weeks old, and you had forgotten he was coming over to study tonight.
You were too humiliated…
“Dark Shadow, enough!” Tokoyami was the first to collect himself, his clothes rustled as he made his way towards your spot on the floor. “Sorry, there was no answer when I knocked and I-”
“It’s okay,” You mumbled, “But, can I be alone for a little bit?”
Your face burned hot at being caught singing along to a cheesy children's movie, you were thankful they couldn't see you. You adored Tokoyami and Dark Shadow, they were so cool and edgy- as their girlfriend- you wanted to be the same...
“Of course, take all the time you need.” The weight of his hand rested warmly on your head for a breath before disappearing, fading footsteps signaled his retreat.
“Don’t take too long,” Dark shadow threw back, “we will be waiting.”
The door clicked shut.
Your eyes water, you couldn't help the sniffles that followed. Your relationship was so new and Tokoyami was so edgy… You had never seen him be anything other than cool and collected.
Would he still want you after seeing this goofy side of you?
You sat on the carpet, your blanket draped around you like a thick veil as your emotions ran their course, Thumbelina played on in the background, the music bittersweet.
KNOCK, KNOCK!
“L/N, you okay in there?” Uraraka’s familiar voice pulled you from your thoughts, you yanked the blanket off your head gathering it around you like a shaw.
“Yeah, I’m okay.”
“Are you coming out? I think Tokoyami is waiting for you.”
“I’ll be out in a minute!” You stood, dropping your blanket to throw on a presentable outfit. Maybe he had forgotten all about it?
You pulled yourself together, being caught singing wasn’t the end of the world. You were making a mountain of a molehill, Tokoyami and Dark Shadow liked you for who you are- told you as much the first time they asked you out.
You fixed your hair and checked your face before rushing to the door to find Uraraka waiting for you.
“He asked me to check on you, I hope you don’t mind.”
“Of course not!” You blush, smiling at your friend. “I’m ready!” You walk past Uraraka and make your way to his room and knock on his door.
“Come in, Babe!” Dark Shadow’s voice rang out. You opened the door to the most 90’s emo room you had ever seen, spotting Tokoyami and Dark shadow on the balcony. You approached him with a shy smile that faded into a blush as he wraps his arm around your waist. Dark Shadow kissed your forehead with a smack before wrapping his transparent form around your body like a frigid snake.
“Ehem.” You startled at the sound behind you, shocked to find Uraraka had followed you into Tokoyami’s room.
“Uhhh.” You cling to your boyfriend, your brow furrowed as you stare at your friend. “Is this an unsubtle way of asking for a threesome?”
“Hyo!”
“Pfffft!”
Uraraka and Tokoyami choked and sputtered as Dark Shadow popped his head between you, “Wouldn’t that be more of a foursome, babe?”
“No, that’s not-”
“No, no, no, I’m not staying!” Uraraka leaps forward to smack Tokoyami and you on the shoulder hard enough to knock you both back. “My job is done here, your welcome, have fun, bye!” She shouts before sprinting out of the room and slamming the door behind her.
“What just- whoa!” Your feet leave the floor and you flail weightlessly about the room until Tokoyami anchors you with a hand. You turn to him, finding him floating beside you with a smile on his face.
“I asked her for a favor,” he mumbles, “I figured you could use a date more than a study session…Earlier, we didn’t intend to embarrass you and we want to make up for it.”
Dark shadow nods before disappearing into the bedroom to retrieve Tokoyami’s phone. Your favorite cheesy Thumbelina song starts to play and you squeal, giddy with excitement.
Tokoyami bowed, grinning as he offered you a hand, “Care to dance?”
“I would be honored.” You make your best attempt at a gravity-free curtsy before taking his hand with a bright smile. He kicked off of the balcony dragging you into the open air behind him. Looking back, any trepidation about floating disappeared as you noticed Dark Shadow kept you both anchored by hugging the balcony rail.
You floated high, illuminated by the blue glow of the full moon, Tokoyami’s warm arms circled you in a loving embrace as the two of you swayed the night away in your best imitation of a proper waltz...

May I ask if you can make a headcanon of MC x Victor, Lucien, Kiro, Gavin, & Shaw( you dont have to do Shaw if you cant) ( MLQC men's pov) not knowing it was MC's bday. The men finding out that MC hide their birthday cause MC feels that they don't deserve to be celebrated and it is not worth it despite going all out for the MLQC men's bday. Would like to see the boys react that. Sorry if this is too much, but it is okay if you cant, I wanted to thank you and I hope you have a safe day
Because I don’t have a firm grasp on Shaw’s character yet (I’m playing on the English server), I’ll be omitting him from this headcanon. Hope you don’t mind!
MLQC Headcanon - My favorite day
Victor (takes place after his Surprise Date)
He was at LFG when he heard the news
Goldman was dropping off some documents that he needed to finalize
He was browsing through the papers when he came across your company’s rough draft plans for next week’s show
He quickly glanced over the words, signed, and flipped to the next page
After every rough draft, your company’s information always followed (naturally, your personal info was there too)
He stopped to look at your picture (it was the same one you used when applying for LFG’s investment)
Always the same dumb expression.... (but he couldn’t help a smile from forming on his face)
That’s when he saw it....your date of birth (XX-XX-XXXX)
....It’s today.....?
?!
He goes into a panic mode immediately (of course, it doesn’t show on the outside)
He takes out his phone and goes to dial your number
He calms himself while the ringing is going through
But panics (again) when he hears your voice
“Victor!”
Obviously, he doesn’t want to confirm if today was your birthday (that would make him seem like the dumb one)
He has to think of what to say for a moment
“Hello? Victor?”
He’s unable to think clearly, so he just blurts out the first thing that comes to his mind
“Souvenir. 6 PM. Don’t be late”
“What? Vict—“ (he hangs up)
He looks at the time, 4 PM
He sighs, rubbing his temples as he starts to regain his senses
He resumes his work as he ponders over what tonight’s menu will be
--------------------
You arrive at Souvenir a little early than planned (around 5:30)
You go to open the door, but it’s locked (weird)
“Victor? (you knock a few times) Victor, are you there?”
You hear a series of rattling and clattering inside
“....Victor? What’s going on in there?”
You go to knock again, but the door opens wide with a bang
He’s in front of you, disheveled as ever
“....MC....you’re early”
“Um..yeah. Work went a lot quicker than usual and...um....are you okay? I heard a lot of noise in here”
“Yes...yes. Why wouldn’t I be okay? (he straightens his clothes) Hurry, come in”
You go inside to see Souvenir all decorated, except for a few areas where it’s still bare (even some of the lights were hanging off)
“It’s still in process....but....” (he brings out the cake, lighted with candles)
“Happy birthday”
Kiro
He found out it was your birthday from Kiki and the others (while he was over at your company for a meeting)
As soon as he heard he ran over to your desk with immense speed
“MC! MC! MC! IT’S YOUR BIRTHDAY TODAY?!”
You look up from your computer, startled
“Kiro! What are you doing here? The meeting should still be going on” (indeed it was, poor Savin)
“That’s not the problem, MC! Why didn’t you tell me it was your birthday?”
You can tell that he’s genuinely hurt by this
“I...just didn’t think it was something worth celebrating, that’s all”
He goes bonkers after you say that
“Not worth celebrating? Are you kidding me?”
He grabs your shoulders and looks you in the eye
“MC! Your birthday DESERVES to be celebrated as much as anyone else’s. Mine included!”
“But...”
“No buts! Today, we are going to make sure you have the BEST birthday EVER!” (he grabs your hand and leads you out of the room)
--------------------
He drags you along throughout town, with him wearing a foolproof disguise (he insisted you wear one too, although it wouldn’t really matter)
You’re having trouble keeping up with his energy, but soon become used to it
He takes you out shopping to buy you a birthday outfit (but he ends up modeling clothes himself, to your request)
The two of you are sitting at a bench, waiting for Savin to come with the car
“.......MC”
You turn your head towards him
He gets up, kneels down in front of you, and takes out a small container
“Kiro?”
He doesn’t say anything, but instead opens the box (you become speechless at the sight of the ring, glowing in the moonlight)
“I bought this while you were in the bathroom” (he takes your hand and slips the ring on your finger)
“Kiro...I...”
“This is my reservation, MC! With this, (he kisses your hand) I’m yours forever. Happy birthday”
Lucien
He already knew your birthday was coming up
But was unsure of the exact date
Every time he asked, you would just play it off
“My birthday? It’s.........soon”
He didn’t want to go looking through your information to find out when it was (it would feel like his loss, or something)
He decides to make YOU tell him, yourself
He’s just so good with his words?
He’s looking at something on his phone during breakfast (something he rarely does)
“MC, look at this trait description for Scorpios”
You take his phone from him
“Do you think this description fits me?”
Strategic? Persistent? Secretive?? (if this isn’t Lucien, then who else is it)
“Yeah, I think it describes you perfectly!”
“Is that so? (you don’t notice the smile on his face) How about I read yours, too?”
“Sure! But I don’t know my sign...can you check XX/XX?” (insert birthdate here)
Bingo.
“So I assumed correctly. Happy birthday, MC”
You immediately realize what you just did (oh no)
“Um, Lucien. It’s not like I didn’t WANT to tell you....” (he just chuckles as you hang your head low)
“I know.” (he gets up to clear the dishes, and goes inside the bedroom)
He comes out wearing a coat, while you’re still sitting at the table
“Well? (you look at him as he straightens his coat collar) Aren’t you going to get dressed?”
--------------------
You wanted to avoid an extravagant celebration for your birthday
And he understood that perfectly
So he takes you to the movies, buys you dinner, and now you’re in his office (he said he wanted to show you something)
“Thank you, Lucien. I had a wonderful time today”
“You’re very welcome. But I’m afraid it’s not over just yet”
He opens a drawer and takes out a small wooden box
“Lucien? What’s this?” (you open the box, and see a beautiful pen inside)
“....is this...”
“I didn’t know what would be the best gift for your birthday.....”
“So you’re giving me Iridescent...?” (he nods slightly, appearing to be embarrassed)
“But this is your—“
“Favorite pen. Which is why I’m giving it to you”
“Does that make me your favorite person?” (you can’t believe you just said that)
This makes you blush profusely (he’s just SO good with words)
He laughs at the sight of your face going red (he hugs you while you’re holding tight to the box)
“Happy birthday......my favorite person”
Gavin
Why did he have to find out it was your birthday from Minor?
He doesn’t care that you hid it from him (he figured you had your reasons)
But it’s irritating that it was Minor. Of ALL PEOPLE
He’s having such a hard time deciding what to give you
After all, you prepared a big celebration for his birthday
“Bro, it’s gonna be okay! Chill!” (it took everything in him to not come over there and hit Minor)
“I’ll ask Boss what she wants as a present”
“What? NO”
“Don’t worry! I got this!” (Minor hangs up, leaving Gavin to pace around his room)
This was your first time celebrating your birthday with him (ever since he asked you out last year)
No wonder Birdcop is so nervous
He gets an idea of what to get you, and gets to work right away (it’s homemade!)
After pacing for 20 minutes, he decides to call you for a date
But drops his phone when you call him first (he stubs his toe while he breaks the fall)
“He-hello?” (he’s rubbing his foot, hiding his pain)
“Gavin! Where are you?”
“...what?”
“What do you mean, what? Our date! I’m in front of the aquarium right now”
He’s confused (somebody help him)
“A..aquarium?” (he flinches when he hears you sigh)
“Yes, the aquarium! Minor told me you were going to take me out on a date here. Am I wrong?”
Birdcop’s actually thankful for Minor’s nosiness for once
“I’ll be there right away” (ride like the wind, Sparky)
--------------------
Your aquarium date goes by pretty quickly (he takes so many pictures of you?)
“Gavin, come here! You look like this sea lion!”
It was about time for the aquarium to close, so he takes you back home
As you were about to take off your helmet, it starts raining like crazy
Despite his constant I’m okays, you bring him in into your apartment to dry off
“You’re going to get sick, Gavin!” (getting sick was the LAST thing on his mind, right now)
He’s sitting awkwardly on a chair, while you go to put his shirt in the drying machine
But you feel something in his shirt pocket and take it out
“A necklace?” (Gavin immediately gets up and runs over to you)
It’s a necklace in the shape of a ginkgo leaf, with both of your initials carved in the back
There are rough edges here and there, but nonetheless beautiful in every way
“....Gavin....!” (he hides his face in his hands, and you notice that his ears and shoulders have turned red)
He coughs before offering to put it on for you (his calloused hands are a little shaky as they graze behind your neck)
“It’s not much but.....happy birthday”
UGH can someone give me an MLQC boy to celebrate my birthdays???

Team Leslie Howard By Susan King
Leslie Howard has gotten a bad rap over the decades. Ironically, it’s because of his most famous role as Ashley Wilkes, who is obsessed with and weakly indecisive over Scarlett O’Hara, and married to his sweet distant cousin Melanie in the Oscar-winning Civil War epic GONE WITH THE WIND (’39). In fact, when I first saw the film at 13 during one of the epic’s reissues, I said “ewww” when I first saw Howard on screen. The British actor was far too old for the part and seemed to be caked in make-up to look younger. And in fact, he was old enough to be the father of Olivia de Havilland, who played Melanie. I kept shaking my head when my mother told me Howard was quite the matinee idol in the 1930s.
He also seemed disinterested in the role. The performance isn’t awful, but he just seemed to be going through the motions. Truth be told, he didn’t want to be in the movie. He even wrote to his daughter: “I hate the damn part. I’m not nearly beautiful or young enough for Ashley, and it makes me sick being fixed up to look attractive.” Howard further said of the movie: “Terrible lot of nonsense. Heaven help me if I ever read the book.”
Then what was the reason he did the movie? Because GONE WITH THE WIND producer, David O. Selznick, gave him an associate producer credit on INTERMEZZO (’39), the romantic melodrama based on the 1936 Swedish hit. INTERMEZZO also marked the Hollywood debut of Ingrid Bergman, who had starred in the original.
Considering I was so unimpressed with Howard as a young teen, I have been a member of Team Leslie since the 1970s. (I can almost forgive him for playing Romeo at the age of 43 in MGM’s ROMEO AND JULIET, ’36.) Though his acting style is of its time, I love his romanticism and his glorious voice. I feel the same way about Ronald Colman, who, like Howard, excelled at suffering from the slings and arrows of love.
Though he made some silent shorts, Howard’s major movie career only lasted 13 years from 1930 to his tragic death in 1943 at the age of 50, when the commercial plane in which he was traveling was shot down by the Nazis. Growing up, Howard’s films were rarely shown on television. Thankfully, TCM and Warner Archive has changed all of that. He was so much more than Ashley Wilkes. Besides being a star on stage and screen, he changed the career of Humphrey Bogart, earned two best actor Oscar nominations and also directed and produced films.
Howard’s career was bookended by the World Wars. Howard, who was of Hungarian/German Jewish heritage, suffered from shyness growing up in a Forest Hill London neighborhood. And, this sensitive young man experienced shell shock during his World War I service. Acting was prescribed as a cure. The debonair, gentlemanly Howard quickly became a star on the London stage and made his Broadway debut in 1920 in Just Suppose. For the next 17 years, he would appear on the Broadway stage often not only starring in plays, but producing, writing and directing.
And he made his Hollywood film debut in one of his Broadway hits, OUTWARD BOUND (’30). With arrival of the talkies, Hollywood look to Broadway and the London stage for talent who, unlike numerous film stars, had had trained voices and could handle dialogue. He earned his first Oscar nomination for the film version of another Broadway vehicle BERKLEY SQUARE (’33). For years, the uber-romantic time-traveling fantasy was unavailable to be seen. I actually bought a bootleg DVD off of eBay, but the print was so bad it was unwatchable.
A few years ago, TCM aired a beautiful print. All I can say, it was worth the wait. It is stagey and creaky, but I just loved it and so will you if you have a romantic bone in your body. The lavish Alexander Korda production of THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL (’35) was the movie that changed my opinion of Howard. I watched it late at night in a horrible TV print that was riddled with commercials. But I was gob smacked. Howard seemed to be having a field day as a foppish British aristocrat, Sir Percy Blakeney, who is actually the brave and dashing Scarlett Pimpernel, a mysterious man who rescues French nobility from losing their heads during the Reign of Terror.
The actor returned to Broadway in 1935 in Robert Sherwood’s drama The Petrified Forest. He also produced the hit play in which he played the epitome of his disillusioned romantic. This time around he’s Alan Squier, a poetic but disenchanted Englishman hitchhiking across the U.S to seek the meaning of life. He ends up finding love and death at a café in the Petrified Forest. The play also starred Humphrey Bogart who electrified audience as “the world-famous killer” Duke Mantee.
When Warner Bros. planned to have Howard reprise his role in the 1936 film version, Howard insisted that Bogart, who certainly wasn’t a box office name, play Duke or he would quit the film. Bogart’s career was changed because of Howard, who does take a back seat to the actor’s riveting performance. Though they have diverse acting styles, Howard and Bogart’s scenes together still pack a wallop 84 years after its release. The following year, they reunited for STAND-IN (’37), a kicky but rarely seen comedy about Hollywood. And nine years after Howard’s death, Bogart and Lauren Bacall named their daughter Leslie after the late actor.
Howard earned his second best actor Oscar nomination for the delightful British production of George Bernard Shaw’s PYGMALION (’38) as Professor Henry Higgins opposite Oscar-nominated Wendy Hiller as Eliza Doolittle. Howard also directed the film, produced by Gabriel Pascal, with Anthony Asquith.
With England at war with Nazi Germany, Howard left Hollywood and went home to London where he began working for the British war effort. He starred in, produced and directed my favorite film of his PIMPERNEL SMITH (’41), a rip-roaring exciting update of THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL. And it’s hard not to think of Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones watching the movie. Howard, the self-assured director, gets a wonderful self-assured performance from Howard the actor. And the final line is a real corker. He also starred with David Niven and directed the well-received aerial propaganda drama THE FIRST OF THE FEW (’42), which was renamed SPITFIRE when it opened in the U.S. shortly after his death.
Howard was on a commercial flight from Lisbon, Portugal bound from London on June 1, 1943 when the Luftwaffe shot the plane, which had 16 other passengers and crew, down over the Bay of Biscay. It would have been so interesting to see where Howard’s career would have gone after the war. Would he return to Hollywood? Broadway? Would he had abandoned acting for directing?
Over the years I have talked to some actresses who worked with him. Despite the fact that de Havilland appeared with Howard in the romantic comedy IT’S LOVE I’M AFTER (’37) and GONE WITH THE WIND and did the Lux Radio Theatre version of The Scarlet Pimpernel, she told me she didn’t get to know him well.
Celeste Holm got to know him maybe a little too well. Though Howard was married, it is no secret he had a wandering eye. She was appearing with Howard in the late 1930s in the touring production of Hamlet as a lady in waiting and Ophelia’s understudy. “I was wearing a gorgeous scarlet dress with a gold wimple and train,” she told me during a 1997 Los Angeles Times interview. “After my scene, I immediately exited to the first wing. I could see the show from there.” Howard soon entered the wing. “He took one look at me and before I could say anything, he took me in his arms and kissed me as beautifully as I had ever been kissed before or since. I was totally unprepared. I had only met him the night before.”
The actor was myopic and as soon as he kissed her, Howard realized it was the wrong woman. Holm went to the dressing room. “One of the actresses I was working said, ‘What happened to you? You look like you have seen a ghost.’” The actress started to laugh at the memory. “She said, ‘He was having an affair with the girl in New York who wore your dress. He probably forgot where he was.’”

the 100 diaries S3 E1
quarantine diaries: june 20 2020
Season 3 episode 1: “Wanheda: Part 1″
chris? oof chris is dead
ok so this explains where the dead body went but where did these guys go??
murphy does not look good at all. he would do so poorly in quarantine. locked up murphy also reminds me of jess from breaking bad
what is going on. ummm
too many people. thanos?? Dwight??
so they just did a time skip through john murphy?? they could have chose a more interesting character but also 86 days is nothing murphy. but i do i like how hes vlogging his experience tho. likes hes the shane dawson of the 100
oh my god! jaha is carrying murphy..lincoln and octavia who??? umm yes the ship is still strong even after the separation.
what a way to start a season tho but like kinda in a bad way. murphy is not my favorite character so yeah this intro was not really for me.
ok so why was it closed in the first
looks like they’re sticking with the same intro :/
woah this is what i like to see! yes bellamy fight lincoln!!! reminds me of the sherlock home movie intro.
ICE NATION?! are we going to meet Katara?
look at kane with a beard talking about real peace lol ok kane with these writers i just know that this wont last
MONTY!! looking good in a uniform
jasper shaved his head?! awww maya
bellamy and this girl?? theyre just gonna throw in this ship with no build up?? bitch waht?? ok fine but im calling it rn i bet this girl dies just for bellamy’s character development cuz there’s literally no other point to having this girl. but i will admit it was cute that she gave him a book
i wonder how many takes the water bucket to the face jasper’s actor had to do
hey hey hey chill jasper dont do that to my boy monty
lol i love jaspers salute into slapping bellamy like was that in the script or did the actor just come up with that on his own either way it was good
on the contrary raven i think that prettyboy bellamy is too good for her/whatever her name is
woooooow jasper blames monty? come on bro it was mostly bellamy and clarke
really who gave octavia a horse? but also since when did she learn how to horse ride because she her as hell didnt learn that on the ark
arkadia?? because of the ark?? ok
look at jasper just being an emo boy with his earbuds in. but also is that an ipod shuffle??? is raven steve jobs now? or where the heck did jasper get it?
what was that look jasper had with raven? ....ship?
wait that arm touch while miller sings let me make love to you...monty and miller a ship? you know what i ship it!
aww and look at bellamy with a smile kinda reminds me of this cat
this scene is just giving me all the feels!! i love it!
i gotta say tho i still really dont like octavia. i hate her even more on a horse i just find it pretentious
bellamy said screw protocol. love this chaotic energy. whatever the hell we want he said
but also bellamy said millers boyfriend?? waht?? so that like means that monty and miller might actually be come a thing tho right??? sorry not sorry that im literally shipping everyone with everyone
i dont like murphys hair now either. way too much gel
what a waste of an apple. that wasnt necessary at all murphy
we’re all kings said jaha. yes i like this attitude
stop it jaha. i dont think you can justice killing that many people
imo this is a very solid group even with octavia. like this is my favorite squad so far it has all my favorite characters bellamy, monty, miller, jasper, and raven (yeah thats right octavia is not my favorites list and neither is clarke)
the ice people with the white war paint remind me of that one racist movie that johnny depp was in
woah there jasper pretty bold and reckless there
lmao bellamy yells hold your fire after shooting the first shot
umm okaY OCTAVIA. nice throw.
oo bellamy said monty youre with me. yes yes yes monty and bellamy are my dream duo
what a beautiful black panther...what the heck clarke. clarke really is a crazy bitch to hunt a black panther
also i really hate her hair rn. like im getting such bad vibez but also clarke really became fluent in 3 months??? huh?? what is that about?
ooo the wristband.
if raven couldnt get down from the horse how did she get up there in the first place??
clarke is wanheda the commander of death umm really this is what the grounders think of clarke
that is not a good picture of clarke its like flynn rider and his wanted posters
question: i thought only the warriors knew english so why does this merchant know english
contraceptive implant removals??? calm down jackson that isnt a life or death procedure. but also damn these people really want to bring in new life into this crazy world?
side note where the hell is wick???
yeah abby fix yourself. preach raven
clarke and niylah... waht?? also the music choice for this scene was straight up weird. like watch the scene and tell me that it wasnt weird
octavia what is this?? octavia stop being salty bitch to lincoln. this is just such a weird dynamic. also octavia if youre gonna tell lincoln that “you can wear their jacket. but you’ll never be one of them” can you please fucking apply this about you really want to be a grounder. such a hypocrite
why does jaha need him? cuz it doesnt seem like murphy has an skill other than keeping himself alive
“pain hate envy those are the abcs of me”-murphy. who is this guy Eminem??
emori?? murphy is like i really dont want to go with jaha but i really into this girl shes the only person that doesnt hate me.
is that shaw mendes?? like is that really him because to be honest shawn mendes has a common face? i really dont know and i dont feel like looking it up. if it was a cameo then it was as weird as ed sheeran popping up in game of thrones
really octavia really. sleeping on the ground underneath the night sky?? bitch who do you think you are? you’ve been on the ground for less than a year and youre acting as if this grounder culture is all that you are. I also don’t like how she is trying to be more “grounder” than lincoln who literally grew up in that culture. idk guys i just get really weird vibes.
oooo get’em jasper that music was annoying me too
side note: but also who the fuck taught these kids how to drive a car cuz its not like anyone on the ark knows how to?? i get that its easy to drive a car but honestly my real beef is that we dont see them learning how to drive cuz i think that it would be funny af...unless please tell me they have flashbacks to them learning how to drive. if not, we were robbed.
great job clarke way to get yourself caught
this is the weakest season opening for this show ever like i gotta say that i really dont like this direction of this season rn

The full playlist
I decided to do this here because Insta has been a butt for too long and wouldn't let me add songs to my stories. If you read this, I tag you to make your own playlist and tag me in it so I can listen to your music tastes.
Day 1: Deep Purple by Artie Shaw & Helen Forrest
I really have a thing for old Big Band music. I blame my dad. We have an old home video of us dancing together to that music.
Day 2: I'm a Slave 4 U by Britney Spears
Listen. It's a classic.
Day 3: Soak Up the Sun by Sheryl Crow
So it's not the greatest song, but I've spent many a summer listening to it.
Day 4: Pyromania by Cascada
I used to watch old AMVs of this song dedicated to a character from one of my favorite movies, who I used to have a huge crush on. My interests have since changed and now I can't listen to that song without thinking of my old obsession with him. It's cringey, bro.
Day 5: Everytime We Touch by Cascada
It's a BOP!
Day 6: Show Me How You Burlesque by Christina Aguilara
Burlesque is one of my favorite movies and this song especially makes me wanna jump on a table and dance. I don't actually do it, tho.
Day 7: A Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton
Perfect for road trips.
Day 8: Starships by Nikki Minaj
I was told it was about getting high. I just thought it was about cool space crafts. I'm not good at song comprehension.
Day 9: Fishy Love by Griffinilla
It's such a cute song. I love Alphys and Undyne.
Day 10: Dreaming of You by Selena
Listen. If you've seen the movie, you'll understand.
Day 11: Toxic by Britney Spears
It's such a great song.
Day 12: Leave (Get Out) by JoJo
This was my #1 favorite song when I was a preteen.
Day 13: Dancing Queen by ABBA
It's quite possibly the only 70s song I like.
Day 14: I See the Light by Zachary Levi and Mandy Moore
It's the most romantic song I know and finding love is my new dream™.
Day 15: Emperor's New Clothes by NateWantsToBattle
Honestly, I prefer this version over the original.
Day 16: Oops I Did It Again by Britney Spears
90s kids understand.
Day 17: Leaves In the Stream by Aurelio Voltaire
Ignoring the fact that I hate singing out loud and would never do karaoke, this song would be the perfect song to karaoke.
Day 18: All I Wanna Do by Sheryl Crow
Do you know how hard it was finding a song from the year I was born that I actually heard before and relatively liked? Actually harder than I thought.
Day 19: Through Heaven's Eyes by Brian Stokes Mitchell
This song really helps me feel a little better about things. Especially my self image.
Day 20: The Devil and Mr. Jones by Aurelio Voltaire
I was really stumped with this prompt because I have trouble understanding the lyrics being sung, much less what they mean. So I chose this. I thought it was about an actor who sold his soul to the Devil in return for Fame, but was cursed to never make a true connection to another person. Turns out, it's just about Doug Jones. You can watch the full explanation here.
Day 21: Pretty Lavinia by American Murder Song
Okay, yes, I understand it's a song about the murderer Lavinia Fisher, but it's a good song! Very catchy.
Day 22: High Hopes by Panic! at the Disco
It's a fun song that gets me through the day
Day 23: The Gael... Time Flies by Pirates For Sail
I know you gays out there love pirate shanties. This is my #1 favorite in my piratey playlist.
Day 24: Bye Bye Bye by N*SYNC
Honestly, I don't listen to a lot of bands, much less ones that broke up. I really don't care if they no longer make music. It's their choice and there's nothing I could do to change it. But this song is good and I miss the days when it was more popular.
Day 25: Como La Flor by Selena
Selena. Need I say more?
Day 26: Can't Help Falling in Love by Elvis
It's such a romantic song.
Day 27: Remember Me from Coco
This song has a deeper meaning when you have a family member who doesn't remember who you are.
Day 28: Chupando by Aurelio Voltaire
Voltaire is my favorite singer. He has such an amazing voice.
Day 29: Someday My Prince Will Come by Adriana Caselotti
I watched Snow White so many times as a child, my parents and I know like every word, every song, etc.
Day 30: When Will My Life Begin by Mandy Moore
Staying home, keeping busy with dozens of crafty hobbies, and waiting for my own Eugene to help me figure my life out? I am Rapunzel.

Hello, do you have any recommended Sun Wukong content? Ive read Journey to the West, watched the newer Movies but want to find some older media involving Sun Wukong. Any recommendations?
@inktostories Hi there! Thanks for dropping by :) I have plenty of Sun Wukong content to recommend and it’s one of my favorite subjects!
TVB’s Cantonese JTTW 1996 is my favorite series. And it’s available on kissasian with Eng. subs. S1 is overall better than S2, but if you feel like watching all the way through, it wouldn’t hurt. Both seasons differ from the original storyline in many ways, but the show’s a wonderful sort of cheesy that I enjoy. Plus, the main cast is very likable.
JTTW 1986 is available on youtube with Eng. subs. I’d recommend at least watching some episodes from the first season. This is the most popular version in mainland China. It’s dated and can be “stiff” compared to newer adaptations, but there’s a purity to it I think worth looking at.
Another thing I could recommend is the 1960s’ Shaw Bro. musicals; these are definitely available for purchase with English subs. Unfortunately, they don’t have subtitles on the web (and only youtube has poor quality subs). I do have links to subless versions though.
Boku no Son Goku (2003) is an underrated children’s animated film based on Wukong’s story and the start of jttw.
Speaking of Japanese adaptations, NHK’s Saiyuki (1993) is also pretty good. I could find the film with Chinese subtitles, but couldn’t find any with English yet.
A Chinese Odyssey part 1 and part 2 might also be of interest to you. I personally don’t consider it very relevant to JTTW because it seems to be using the characters as a metaphor to tell a love story instead of focusing on the story’s main themes. Also, I feel like Wukong’s appearance is limited in these (most of the time, he’s his reincarnated human self).
Hope this helps you out!

Con Wrap up
I went to Comic Con last week and here’s what I did. Sorry for the long post.
Thursday: Got to the convention center early and was expecting a long line since I was headed to Ballroom 20. However there wasn’t. There was approximately 50 people in front of me which is unheard of. I couldn’t help but wonder where everyone else was. Cause Ballroom 20 is always packed! Regardless I got in and was 7 rows away from the front.
First off was From the Bridge which is a documentary by Spencer F. Lee about the evolution scifi, fantasy, and horror and how it shaped society. How it kind of seemed childish and there really wasn’t a place that people could go to for these genres. Seems really interesting and I wish I could’ve see more. The documentary won’t be out til I believe November.
Got stuck watching the reboot of Charmed, wasn’t a fan the first time. Then Tell Me A Story which will be on CBS all access. A retelling of fairy tales with modern settings. On the fence about that one. Next up was A Discovery of Witches, it’s a book series that will turn into a tv series. Again on the fence about this one, a woman is a witch but denies it cause of what happened to her family. And she ends up falling for a vampire.
Then it was Bobcat Goldthwait’s Monsters and Misfits a tv series that has monsters and such but humorously done. An example being a guy goes on a date with a mermaid or a news reporter exposes some guy running for mayor as a werewolf. Seems funny. Finally I was waiting for Niantic’s panel and about 5 minutes before it comes on, someone over the intercom announces it’s been cancelled >_< then walked around the exhibit floor a bit.
Friday: Got into the Indigo Ballroom and saw Adventure Time. Saw exclusives for the movie that’s coming out. Looks like it’s going to be a battle between Princess Bubblegum and her Uncle Gumbald. Also incredibly sad that this is the last season. Found myself nearly crying when I was watching John DiMaggio trying to hold it together himself. The show has been on for 10 years!
Fooly Cooly was immediately afterwards, most of it was taken up by a preview of the first episode of season 3. It was great listening to Kari Wahlgren (Haruko). Also what I thought was interesting was that the CEO of Production I.G. mentioned that the were looking for different directors who had never seen FLCL and see their take on the series. The things he wanted for sure in the series was that it was set in the same world, Haruko was in it, wanted the original creators/writers/etc. for the series, and The Pillows must do the music. I like season 2 and I can’t wait for season 3.
Next up was Dream Corp LLC off Adult Swim, not my cup of tea. Tried to like it but I found it to be annoying. Then Venture Bros, wondering if I should start this series or not. Tried to years ago but it didn’t do anything for me. Maybe things have changed? Robot Chicken was next on the list, I remember liking it as a kid but now it just bugs me. Again tried to like it but I couldn’t.
My last panel of that day was Final Space, I waiting to see Olan Rogers. The cast was hilarious, it just got picked up for season 2. It’s a very silly series but it also has a lot of sad and real moments within it. I think my favorite bit was when Coty Galloway (Avocato) saw his name sign with the voices he was doing next season. The sign said “various” as in various voices, he thought a character had that name XD
Saturday: Got into the Indigo Ballroom again to see Steven Universe. Holy crap we got to see a new episode and what White Diamond looks like. We’re also getting a movie! Listening to Rebecca Sugar is always great, just found out she see’s herself as non-binary.
Afterwards I rushed over to Room 6BCF to see Quick Draw that’s always funny to watch. Usually there’s Sergio Aragones and Scott Shaw but there’s always a guest and this time it was Lalo Alcaraz. He does political comics, a lot of Trump related junk, my sides were hurting.
Cartoon Voices was up with people like J. P. Karliak (The Boss Baby: Back in Business, The New Looney Tunes), Julie Nathanson (Skylanders, Avengers Assemble), John Mariano (Animaniacs, Hey Arnold!), Kari Wahlgren (Bunnicula, Fooly Cooly), Roger L. Jackson (The Powerpuff Girls, Ghostface), Matthew Mercer (Thundercats, Overwatch). They read a script that was Rapunzel but put their twist on it and again I died laughing.
Then went to the exhibit hall and bought more junk I probably don’t need. Did the same thing on Sunday. Will post the pics I took however I’ve been having trouble with my phone. So I apologize, they might not be up til tomorrow

A) LOVE your blog; B) Top 3 favorite overall kung-fu movies and 3 favorite Shaw Bros movies?
Thank you so much! I genuinely appreciate the love!As for your two questions, I never really answer them as I find it so hard to make lists. I’d say my favourite kung fu film ever is “The Young Master” and, right now, my most enjoyable Shaw Brothers film is “Dirty Ho”.

Smokey brand Movie Reviews: But Dat Daniels Tho
So. Alien: Covenant. Yeah.
I waited five years for this. Five years. Off the clusterf*ck of Prometheus, i was borderline hyped to hear that Scott was going to do a sequel. I was pretty distraught when he first announced that it would be a direct sequel to Prometheus though because, let’s face it, that movie was garbage. I mean, it was okay but in terms of lore, who the f*ck cares about Engineers, right? Where the f*ck my Xenomorphs at, bro?? Apparently, someone at fox came to their goddamn sense and made Scott change his mind so we got Covenant. Overall, it was a decent flick, I was entertained but it is decidedly NOT and alien film. Not in the least.
The Good
But Dat Xenomorph, Tho!
The cast was phenomenal. I was surprised by a lot of the performances onscreen. Scott is really good at conveying to his actors what he needs and you can see it, particularly in Katherine Waterson. She’s done the best Ripley impersonation i’ve seen in this series of films so far. Especially considering i went into this thinking of her as Tina Goldstein.
Michael Fassbender was goddamn brilliant. The subtleties of David’s seething malice toward humanity. The robotic, yet, loving eccentricities of Walter. Pulling off both portrayals almost simultaneously; Absolutely amazing. Fassbender is one of my favorite actors and he did not disappoint.
Danny Mcbride was pretty legit. I didn’t expect him to be so adept at actually acting and not being a dick. He’s a dick 95% of time.
The Neomorph was mad dope. Didn’t expect to be so legit. Pleasantly surprised.
This film is f*cking beautiful The cinematography is classic Scott. Say what you will about his modern technique, dude knows how to frame a goddamn scene, for sure!
Walter. I noted Fassbender earlier, but motherf*cking Walter, bro. Walter.
The Bad
There was next to no characterization among the crew. I mean, there was, like, a little, but these motherf*ckers were generic meatbags for extraterrestrial murder. That’s it. Not that i was super curious about who they were but i figure a little bit might help some. I was not emotionally attatch2ed to anyone except for the Fassbenders.
The plot was a little eh. I mean, it was literally just something to substantiate a bunch of carnage. I think it was too much like Alien in that regard and since i’ve already seen this done (much better i might add) it was a little underwhelming.. Would have been nice to get some actual unique development though.
Speaking of answers, there are none! Like, none! All of the open ended situation of Prometheus, left wide open! How the f*ck did She put David back together? When the f*ck did he kill her? Why she look like that? Why he hate the Engineers so much? When did she make that recording? So much unanswered! SO much!
The pacing was insane! Alien was a slow burn. Aliens was kind of a slow burn. Alien 3 was definitely a slow burn. Alien Resurrection? We don’t talk about that one... But Alien: Covenant? stupid fast! it felt like 5 minutes. I mean, the flick is 2 hours and some change but it was over in minutes, you know? Sometimes that happens when a movie is good and you’re super engaged but this was not that. This was jump cut after jump cut after jump cut. We kind of teleported to the climax with next to nothing memorable in between.
The VFX, the computer portions, were kind of meh. Watching the CG aliens run about made me miss Big Chap or all of those suits from Aliens. Like, the CG aliens in AVP are better looking than these cats.
Everyone was dumb. Literally all of the people were dumb as rocks. All of them. Except Daniels. She was the only one who had any sense. Everyone else deserved the horrible fates they all got.
The editing is kind of suspect. I feel like this is what’s left of a 4 hour movie. What we got is still good but if you added an hour or so to it, i think it would have been much better.
All of that religious subtext was a little heavy handed i think.
The Ugly
This thing looks like it was cut all to hell. I’d be super interested to see what the original version looked like. I imagine the is probablky substantially more Shaw among other things. God i hope we get a directors or extended cut when this thing hits Blu Ray.
Covenant was okay but it cost Neil Blomkamp his Alien 5. I wanted that Alien 5 man. i hear Ridley Scott pitched a b*tch until Fox killed it. Motherf*cking asshat...
The Verdict
Overall, Alien: Covenant is worth a watch. If you’re a fan of the franchise, it’s kind of a return to form but not really. If you’re new to the franchise, it’s a relatively accessible enrty point. It’s a solid outing but not one of Scott’s best. The performances from McBride, Fassbender, and Waterson help to ease what i can only imagine a kind of butchered final piece. Give it a shot, it might surprise.
