in every fandom for every character it's ALWAYS therapyspeak lmao. He Would Not Have The Emotional Intelligence To Say That is basically a universal truth but also i think even for characters who i would describe as relatively self-aware (your alex albons of the world, for instance) - just because you're aware of a feeling doesn't mean that you can articulate it to yourself, much less out loud to anyone else. so more than it even feeling OOC i think it annoys me because i think the way that people try to rationalize/explain away their feelings, or subliminate them into a different thing, or talk around them, is so much more interesting and reveals so much more about their character than saying (even in internal narration) "he felt X"

for lewis specifically: i think that we (collectively, myself included) need to write him bitchier and more insufferable lol. this is something that i get annoyed by for any driver (love and light to anyone who loves grid dad seb but.) but i think it's especially prevalent sometimes w lewis for many reasons, including the live laugh love public persona that he has actively cultivated in recent years lol. and i think: as w any person. putting someone on a pedestal can be as dehumanizing as the opposite! like. the universal human condition is to be so annoying and to bitch during video shoots about how everything is taking so long and and to be kind of toxic about how everyone else on the grid couldn't take the heat during qatar 2023 etc etc. and i think that fics that actively engage w him being whiny and stubborn and petty and a little immature are actually much more compassionate and nuanced and more interesting for it.

(this is also actually the number one thing that will make me back out of brocedes fic is like. if it's too sympathetic to lewis lmao/paints the toxicity in that relationship as purely one-sided. you cannot be like "this place is a freak show i don't respect either of you people" and then make one half of the pairing NOT an annoying freak. u know)

fic title: I’m falling and the sun is blinding me to your faults

i wanted to do an au of this one, so presenting: tony and rhodey, but make it villainous. i think it’d be fun! 

James Rhodes is two things, first and foremost being that he is a businessman. 

People call him a villain. He doesn’t really think he’s that villainous. 

After all, he only took over New York. He left all the other states alone, so that has to mean something. He was gracious! 

He also wouldn’t consider himself a villain because everyone who works under him gets health insurance. They don’t complain that much, although he’s gotten some about the quality of the buffet on Fridays. 

Catering companies. Hit-or-miss, you know? 

There have been a couple of companies who try to stop him. Rivals that hate that his products are better and employees are happier, for one. Those are easy to dismiss. 

SHIELD is one company who tries, and fails. Repeatedly. It would be embarrassing, but Rhodes has respect for Agents Romanov and Hill, who have been the closest to breaking into his personal office.

The player that isn’t registering on the field is Tony Stark. Perhaps because he isn’t so much of a player on the field as an existing person who just happens to be on a field. Or a building. However you would like to imagine it. 

In other universes, he walks like he owns the world because he could buy up everything and still have money left over to get ice cream at the end of the day. 

In this universe, his father kicked him out of his house for various things, the most prominent being that Tony is rather partial to kissing guys and ladies, and that just simply won’t do. 

(Tony also stole enough money out of his bank account to buy a house and also start his own business without his knowledge, but in the grand scheme of things, that’s just a small drop in the ocean.) 

Tony made his own tech start-up business. He’s invented a few new things that hit the market discreetly, and he’s building up more and more clientele. He’s about to open another shop, and in all honesty he’s not worried about getting noticed. 

This is until Rhodes comes across an employee bragging about a new repair guy who makes computers run twice as fast, charges less than most repair shops, and looks mighty fine in a tank top.

The last reason is reason enough to visit. 

But also, to see who’s been fixing up Rhodes tech and can make it faster. He doesn’t know why he wouldn’t have just applied for a job. 

Tony is not expecting Rhodes to enter into his building. He has people who are walk-ins, but usually you would expect a villain to make an appointment. Or not, they are villains. 

“I heard that you’ve been improving my phones,” James says. He leans into Tony’s space. He smells quite nice, has a well-tailored suit, and Tony is trying very hard not to find him attractive. That’s not the sort of thing you could be focusing on. 

“You gonna sue me or something?” 

“No, I want to hire you.” 

Tony blinks. 

“Oh. No thank you.” 

Rhodes pulls back. 

“Why ‘no’?” 

“I like my shop just fine. And you have things well-handled.” 

“Could I consult you?” 

“You can’t afford me.” 

Rhodes grins. 

“Are you sure about that?” 

“Of course I am. Can I get anything for you today, or did you just want to beg me to come work for you?” 

“Most people would never be this bold.” 

"What would they be? Terrified in your presence?” 

“More or less, yes. It’s what I prefer.” 

"I don’t cater to people’s preferences, it’s a character flaw and strength,” Tony quips. 

Rhodes smiles. 

It’s terrifyingly beautiful, really. Tony is at a loss for words. 

“I think I’m liking you, Stark.” 

“Tony. You don’t call me Stark. I don’t do the last name dynamic.” 

“Sweetheart, then. Not your last name.” 

“Pet names, seriously?” 

“Oh you got it, honey.” 

“Then go on, platypus,” Tony throws back. 

“Platypus? Really?” 

"Pet names are on the menu, honey bunch. Just try me.” 

Rhodes smiles, turning to exit. 

“I’ll be in touch, darling.” 

Tony leans against his desk, legs shaking underneath. 

There are two problems that he’s not sure how to solve. Here they are: 

1.) Rhodes now has Tony on his radar, which is probably bad because Tony will absolutely be used for world domination or whatever. 

2.) Tony doesn’t really mind as long as he gets to see Rhodes because goddamn. That man could get so many things, and he probably has. And Tony wouldn’t mind being one of those things if he played his cards right. 

But for now, Tony just wants to fix computers and maybe just buy a new brand of tea, but he’s honestly not sure.

Rhodes makes an appointment to meet. 

Of Fucking Course. 

Tony is not impressed, and is also not impressed that he comes in with a very expensive custom-made designer suit, whereas Tony is not sure the last time his pair of jeans got washed, and an old t-shirt that’s advertising an ice cream shop that is closed now. 

“You love to make an entrance all the time?” Tony asks. “What can I legally do for you?” 

“You’re assuming I’m making you do illegal things, babe?” 

“Yes, Rhodey.” 

“It’s Rhodes.” 

“Hm, maybe. But not to me. Rhodey. I wanna ruin your business impression.” 

Pepper snorts besides Rhodes, who is suitably impressed that Tony doesn’t give one flying fuck about the fact that he could destroy him at any point. 

“I’m ordering that on your next business card deal.” 

“I’ll fire you.” 

“You can’t find someone as competent as me, don’t even joke.” 

“I came here for an opportunity for you. You’ve managed to get some people’s computers to speed up so much. And I want you to do it with all of my employee’s computers.” 

“What, you couldn’t reverse-engineer it? See what I did for yourself?” 

Rhodey grins. 

“I never question a handsome man’s work, darling.” 

Tony turns red. 

“You’re really bad with professionalism, honeysop.” 

“What the hell is that?” 

“What, never heard about romance in the fifteenth century? Boring.” 

“Will you do the job or not?” 

“What are the terms, the conditions, and how much are you paying?” 

Pepper steps forward, a sizable stack of paperwork in her hands. 

The work would pay off the building. It would pay off his mortgage on his house. Hell, it would help a lot. He’d have extra to mess around and maybe go on a vacation. 

The downside is that he’s helping a villain get faster speed and better battery life with laptops. This could also mean he’d die, but honestly he was kind of expecting an early death. 

Rhodey assures him that he won’t die. 

“If anyone touches you, then they feel my wrath,” he says. His teeth glint underneath the lights. “And honey, no one ever likes feeling that.” 

“What, it isn’t all feather-light tickles?” 

“Touches a bit more than that.” 

There’s an unspoken story there. Rhodey’s grin goes from tight and eyes empty to refocusing on Tony and turning soft, genuine. 

“We can discuss the official plans over dinner.” 

“Dinner won’t work for me, I got plans tonight.” 

“A hot date?” 

"A special movie screening,” Tony says. “Can’t miss it. Maybe next time, or the next three times.” 

Rhodey smiles. 

“Maybe sometime.” 

“Maybe.”

Holy fuck.

Rhodes International has a local coffee shop on the lobby. A barista is a cheerful girl who has neon yellow hair greets him and asks if he wants a complimentary drink. 

“You...know who I am?” 

“Not in the slightest!” she says cheerily. “I have a memory thing where I remember everyone I ever meet and who I don’t meet. What kind of coffee guy are you?” 

“Um...you guys have mint syrup?” 

“Yup!” 

“Then I guess a peppermint latte?” 

“Coming right up!” 

So here is this girl humming what sounds suspiciously like the Winnie the Pooh song as she makes a drink, and that drink is amazing. 

Also, people are wearing, it seems, whatever outfit they want. There are some people talking, and two look to be dressed in professional business clothing, but the third guy they’re talking to is wearing ripped jeans and a tank top has the phrase of “I’m Just Existing on a Manifestation of Reality” emblazoned. 

It’s odd. 

“So glad you could make it, Tones,” Rhodey says. 

“Tones?” 

“What, too much?” 

“Tones sounds like you know me.” 

“And I don’t?” 

“What’s my favorite jam?” 

“Why jam?” 

“If you know someone well, you know their favorite type of jam.” 

“Orange marmalade?” 

“What the fuck do I look like, Paddington?” 

“You’re right, Paddington’s not near as sexy.” 

“This counts as harassment, right? This counts as harassment.” 

“Don’t have him sue us already, he’ll win,” Pepper says, breezing to their sides. God, she’s gorgeous. Casually dressed in a pencil skirt and a blouse and acting like she doesn’t look like a goddess. Must be exhausting. “Tony, great to have you. Let me show you who you’re working with.” 

He has his own fancy office, a team that knows what they’re doing, and catered lunch. 

Catered lunch. It’s not even a Friday. 

“Friday’s are questionable,” Rhodey says. “Weird selection.” 

“You don’t wanna know,” says Intern Joe. 

That’s literally on his ID card.

Tony starts work. It’s not bad, not at all. He works in the mornings on the weekends and Mondays as well as Thursdays, and then sometimes does work from his own office. 

Rhodey is...nice. 

This is a bit unsettling, because Rhodey literally just threatened the president over an environmental bill not being accepted and currently all employees are only slightly scared. 

“This is just like three months ago,” says Janice The Badass. (Also on her ID card.) “Don’t worry, the government can’t do anything. They rely on us too heavily.” 

“For what?” 

“For safety.” 

“Not asking.” 

“Good, I’m not going to answer.” 

“Okay?” 

- 

It’s also weird that Rhodey checks in on him. He brings him coffee how he likes it, and he makes him sit down and try new foods with him. 

He’s not bad at conversational topics either. Tony’s used to talking, and he’s used to bad-talking on dates. This doesn’t come close. 

No, they talk about the differences of Star Trek and how much Tony hates specific brands of pens, and how Rhodey is a disaster when it comes to coordination of ties. 

“I don’t like ties,” he scowls. 

“Then why wear one?” 

“Pepper says they look nice.” 

“Why do you need to look nice?” 

“Most things are all about presentation.” 

“Ah, need to be taken seriously.” 

“Only at times when I’m facing government officials or weird corporate bosses.” 

“Aren’t you a corporate boss?” 

“I’m a corporate boss who is also an enemy of fellow corporate bosses. Weird thing.” 

“That’s...intriguing.” 

“How so?” 

“Well, how does that work?” Tony asks, popping a couple blueberries into his mouth. “How are you both the same and an enemy?” 

“Watch and learn, sugar. Watch and learn.” 

Tony is allowed on the next business meeting. Which, coincidentally, his old Uncle Obadiah is part of. 

This leads to rather undesired complications.

“You’re working for a supervillain?” Obie practically yells. 

“Well, it’s a bit more complicated than that,” Tony says. “I just work with computers.” 

“Besides if he wanted to work for a real supervillain, wouldn’t he be working for you?” Rhodey asks. 

He’s sitting in one of those rolling-chairs, and despite that, he made it his throne. He’s relaxed in it, perfectly at peace with the situation. All eyes are on him. 

“I’m not the one that the government is after.” 

“And yet I’m the one who’s successfully paid taxes. Where have yours gone, hm? Strip club in Vegas? Weapon sales in Afghanistan?” 

Obie freezes. 

Tony knows that when you freeze, it is your worst tell. 

“Does dad know?” 

This time, Rhodey turns towards him. He’s surprised. 

“We’ll discuss that later. But does Howard know, Obadiah?” 

“Howard is none of your concern.” 

“Oh my god, he is,” Rhodey says grinning. “You haven’t told him about your little back-door escapades. I wonder what would happen if I told him.” 

“You don’t want me as an enemy,” Obadiah says, shaking. He looks at Tony. “And you, boy, you just earned yourself a death sentence.” 

“Funny, Howard said the same thing when he kicked me out of the house,” Tony says as he’s checking his nails. Rhodey thinks he is in love. 

“Go ahead and try to get me as an enemy, see how well it works for you,” Rhodey says, pearly whites on display. “I took over the entire state of New York, leaving everyone in power allied with me. Plus, Tony hasn’t pushed his legacy from what I’ve seen, but what would happen if I just...let him talk? At the next press conference, perhaps.” 

Tony grins, and it’s dangerous. 

“Yeah Obie, what if I talked? I’m sure Howard’s disastrous attempt at fatherhood would be a real uptick in stock points.” 

“You wouldn’t.” 

“Just watch. Just fucking watch,” Tony says. “I still know how to smile for the press, and I still remember all of my lessons for how to make sure anything is believable.” 

He shakes. 

Rhodey gets security. 

Tony visibly relaxes as Stane is led out of the building, and Rhodey smiles over at him. 

“What?” 

“You wanna grab dinner with me?” 

“Like as a casual dinner, or a date-dinner?” 

“How about both?” 

“Thank god, I can’t remember where my nice shoes are.”

Tony supposes it is odd to be out to dinner with one of the most-feared men in all of New York. 

But it was hard to fear him when he was currently trying to lick ice cream off the tip of his nose with no such luck. 

Or when Rhodey kisses him senseless on his doorstep and makes fun of the little gnome that he’s put outside, and Tony giggles and watches him leave in his fancy car, still leaning on his door. 

Oh, he’s got it bad. 

But he doesn’t mind.

Magical Mix Up

Chapter Seven

Author’s Note: Again a huge thanks goes to @theadrogna for being my historical guide for all things Roman. I have learned some fun things for this fic.

Amy hated that Rory had been taken from her once more. Sometimes it felt as though the universe did this to them every few years just for laughs.

“We’ll find him, Amelia,” the Doctor wrapped his arm around her, “You two always find one another. Even when he died and was erased from time, Rory came back to you.”

Amy took a deep breath, “I know.”

“Then don’t worry,” the Doctor smiled, “This place especially is somewhere that he knows. Somewhere he can blend into, so we just have to look for any signs he’s left for us. And if we’re in the wrong part of the city, then Rip will find him.”

She sighed looking around what she once would have been excited to see. The Romans had been her favourite subject at school, but while Rory was missing nothing else mattered.

Amy had tried every so often to ask him about the memories he held but Rory didn’t like thinking, never mind talking about them.

They continued through the marketplace, hoping that they’d find him but so far nothing. Amy’s heart leapt every time she saw a flash of red, hoping Rory would appear before her but there was no luck so far.

As they walked on Amy suddenly sighed, “Why haven’t we found anything? Rory would leave us a sign, where is it?”

The Doctor mused before shaking his head, “Of course, we arrived here not long after him. He wouldn’t expect us yet. Rory is probably finding a place to hunker down first.”

“So, what do we do?” Amy demanded.

The Doctor wrapped his arm around her once more, “We keep looking for him. He would have entered through the same gate we did. We’re in the right section of the city and there are only a certain amount of places Rory will be able to go without connections. We’ll find him.”

 John winced as he was tossed out the window and slammed into the ground. Scrambling to his feet, he turned to see the multiple guards appear swords drawn.

“Look,” he held out his hands, “Obviously mistakes were made, and I shouldn’t have been in there, even if she did invite me but there’s no need for all this. I was just asking for help to find someone.”

John grimaced as his explanation wasn’t swaying them and they continued to advance. Spinning round to run away, John found there were two guards behind him and groaned as someone hit him across the back of his head. Dropping to the ground, John swam in and out of consciousness as he was grabbed by each arm then dragged through the crowd. His head was buzzing, and John wanted to pull away but couldn’t. John groaned as he was yanked to his feet and came face to face with a large man who listened to one of the guards before nodding. John struggled weakly as he was dragged through the gates and into a room with a hole in the floor covered by a metal grate. The grate was pulled off it and a rope ladder tossed down.

John was shoved to the hole and pushed down.

“Climb or fall,” the guard told him, “Your choice.”

Against his growing headache, John climbed down the ladder knowing the other way would probably result in worse injury. The moment he touched the dirt covered ground, the ladder was pulled up, leaving him in the cell with circular walls and nothing but a hole in the ceiling.

Waiting until the guards were gone, John gently touched his ear to activate his communicator, but it wasn’t there. Frantically checking his clothes and the floor of the cell, he sighed finding nothing.

“Bollocks.”

 Gideon sipped the tea she’d made for herself while the others worked to fix the Waverider. She could hear the annoyed cries as things wouldn’t work, no matter what they did. Jax was currently swearing at the systems as Rip had shown him several tricks that normally got the computer to start, but this time everything refused to work for him.

“Gideon,” Cisco appeared, “Can I talk to you?”

She nodded, “Of course. Take a seat.”

“Okay,” he frowned, dropping into the chair across from her, “I get you’re annoyed at them, especially the fact Sara hid they’d found Rip from you.”

“And kept him imprisoned,” Gideon added sharply.

Cisco nodded, “I get all that but fixing the ship should be a priority?”

She smiled slightly at him, “It is. Mr Ramon, I would never do anything to put the Waverider in danger. The self-repair systems are already working, and the ship shall be repaired within the next six hours.”

Cisco frowned, “Then why are you letting them struggle?”

Amusement covered her face, “Because they believe they do not need me.”

“What about Rip?”

“Sending more people is not a good idea,” Gideon remined him, “Mr Constantine is currently searching for him. Adding the others while the situation is unknown is reckless. Once the systems are running again, I will be able to locate him within seconds.”

Cisco frowned, “You can find Rip that easily?”

“Now we are within the same time, yes,” Gideon told him, “It was a problem when I had to search the entirety of time and space.”

“Then what?” Cisco asked softly.

“Gideon smiled beatifically, “Then I take my ship and if others wish to travel with me, then we shall work out an arrangement.”

Cisco nodded, “Sara is going to love that.”

                                 *********************************************

 Rory gripped his sword, feeling the familiar handle bite into his hand. He felt better now, having his own weapon but they couldn’t use them just now and caught Rip’s arm holding him in place.

“Where will they take him?” Rip asked, watching his friend dragged away.

Rory turned asking, “Don’t you know?”

“I learned enough to pass myself off as a soldier within a guard station in order to retrieve a shotgun,” Rip told him, “Not to mention it was one of my very first missions, so I’m a bit rusty on the customs.”

“He’s been taken to the Tullianum,” Rory explained, “It’s a dungeon. Prisoners were left in there until trial, usually without food and water.”

Rip frowned, “How long until he’s put on trial?”

“Depends on who the house belonged to,” Rory mused, “And whose bedchamber he violated. From what I know that house belongs to a very important member of the Senate. Your friends are not the best at keeping a low profile, are they?”

“John tends to not to think at times,” Rip sighed, “Not with his head anyway,” he bent down and picked up a small metallic disc, “And this is his comms link, so he can’t call for help.”

“Let’s face it from what I’ve seen of the others is a blessing for the timeline,” Rory noted.

“How do we get him out?” Rip asked.

Rory frowned as he thought, “Well, that’s the problem. I suggest waiting until tonight, there will be fewer guards for us to get past on the night shift. The sun will be going down in about three hours if I’m right.”

Grimacing Rip said, “Then I suggest we get back to the TARDIS and reunite you with Amy. We can make a plan there.”

Rory nodded, “That is a great idea.”

Motioning towards the city gate, Rip smiled, “This way.”

 The blue box Rory expected to see was not there and he frowned turning to Rip.

“There’s a camouflage shielding on,” Rip explained, “The Doctor told me to look for a pattern on the wall,” he stepped forward and studied the area finding finally a few squiggles made by chalk. Turning Rip took a small step forward and banged into the hidden TARDIS.

Rory began to laugh, the lightness made him feel more like Nurse-Rory and less Centurion-Rory.

“I appear to have found it,” Rip winced, rubbing his forehead.

Rory stepped forward, his hand stretched out and gently touched the door feeling the wood beneath his fingertips.

“It’s me,” he whispered, “Can I come in?” There was a pause before the lock clicked, and the door opened for him. Stepping inside, Rory smiled, “Thank you.”

Rip followed him inside, closing the door and joined Rory at the control console, “Do you know what you’re doing?”

Nodding Rory replied, “The Doctor showed me how to send a signal to the sonic once. Just in case. I could, in theory, also take us somewhere.”

“How did you unlock the door,” Rip asked suddenly, “I noticed a lock earlier. And a ship this advanced, the Doctor would not leave it accessible.”

Rory shrugged, “Normally I’d have a key, but the TARDIS likes me. Don’t ask me why but she apparently does.”

Rip frowned in thought, “Like an AI?”

“Like a soul,” Rory replied.

 Rip watched the other man for a moment before deciding to ask what had been weighing on his mind since he’d connected with the computer on his own ship.

“Rory,” he said, “When you were on the Waverider, did anyone mention Gideon?”

Musing for a moment, Rory finally replied, “Your friend John stated Gideon wasn’t able to help at the moment.”

Rip sighed, “I’m really hoping they haven’t damaged her permanently.”

“Who is she?” Rory asked softly.

“She’s the AI for the Waverider,” Rip replied shortly.

Rory stared at him for a moment before asking, “Who is she to you?”

Amazed by how perceptive the other man was Rip shrugged, “My best friend. The only family I have left.”

“He only said at the moment,” Rory reminded him, “We can ask him when we get him out, so don’t lose hope.”

Rip shook his head, “You are very different from me. I lost the ability to hope a long time ago.”

Before Rory could answer they heard the door opening and Amy ran in, followed closely by the Doctor. Without a word, the redhead ran to her husband and grabbed him in a tight embrace. Rip watched Rory’s eyes close in relief as he held onto Amy. Pulling away from Rory, Amy turned to Rip.

“Thank you,” she breathed, as the Doctor hugged Rory, “Thank you.”

Rip shrugged, “He was fine without any of us.”

“So,” the Doctor said, “Where to now?”

“Actually,” Rory spoke up, “One of Rip’s people has been arrested and we need to rescue him.”

Amy’s eyes darkened, “Is this one of the people who held you hostage?”

“They thought I was Rip,” Rory soothed before continuing, “Besides, he violated the sanctity of a Senator’s wife’s bedroom and, as he is definitely not a citizen, then this will not end well for him unless we get him out.”

“What about his friends?” Amy demanded, “Can’t they risk their lives instead of yours, again.”

“His communicator fell out,” Rory replied softly, “He has no way to call for help.”

Annoyance flickered across Amy’s face, but when Rory took her hand, she sighed and nodded.

“Fine,” Amy said, “But I’m coming with you.”

“No,” Rory told her, “I’ve seen you with a sword. We’re not looking for that level of carnage.”

Before Amy could argue, the Doctor spoke up, “I agree with Rory, Amy. He knows what he’s doing.”

“Besides we’ll need you to come after us if something goes wrong,” Rip noted wryly, “Which, with my current track record, it will.”

“You’re a bundle of joy,” Amy rolled her eyes.

Rory wrapped his arm around Amy and pressed a kiss to her temple before turning to Rip, “First thing first. I want my own uniform back. Then we’ll work out a plan.”

“I knew I would find you here.”

When the elevator doors opened and you spotted Tim hunched over the batcomputer, furiously typing away on the keyboard, you already knew that the night you had planned for the two of you was ruined before it even began. He was so focused on the contents on the screen monitor that when you called his name, he only grunted in response before correcting himself with a brief hello.

After climbing the steps and coming to stand beside him, he never once took his eyes off the screen to turn to you and at least give you that crooked, yet sweet smile he always did when he would see you. You chose to take a step behind him and keep your sentences brief and simple to make sure that you didn’t distract him too much from the task at his hands.

“I can see that you’re working hard…” You paused for a moment to take note of the numerous empty coffee cups that lay a clutter on the desk and on the floor beside him, “So hard that you’ve really given all your energy and time to whatever it is you’re working on.”

“Yup, crime never stops, so why should I?” Tim stated as he took one hand off the keyboard to pick up the cold cup of coffee to the left of him and sip it before setting it down and typing faster than he was before he drank it.

“I guess, but you can always afford a break, you got four other people to take over the job for you in the meantime.” You stated, casting a glance up at the cases on the platform across from you to look at the well-tailored suits that Tim and the rest of his family wore while crime-fighting.

“They can’t work like me, it’s fine, but they don’t have the patience to learn if I were to teach them...especially Jason…” Tim’s words were coming out either super fast or in chunks as he leaned in closer to the computer screen and slowed his typing, his attention was directed more at the screen than you; you liked that he worked hard at whatever he put his mind to, but you hated when his mind chose work over personal time with you.

“Got you!”

You jumped a little at his sudden outburst of pride and excitement, but your wide eyes were soon replaced with soft ones and a small smile as he finally pushed himself away from the desk and stood up to stretch. He plugged in his communicator into the computer and let it sync up with all the intel he had gathered. Now that he was free from the computer, he turned his head to let his electric blue eyes land on you and he was taken back by what he saw.

You stood by the railing, with a slow grin that stretched ear to ear. He noticed that your silky (H/C) locks were done in cascading curls and you were wearing a figure-fitting floral dress with a jean jacket that engulfed most of your upper body. Your weather-beaten sneakers squeaked on the cool metal flooring as you spun around on the tip of your sneakers, waiting patiently for him to say something to you instead of staring at you with his mouth slightly agape and his body nearly frozen in place.

“Wow, you look nice.” That was all Tim said as he let his hand rise to gesture to you before falling back at his side. You chuckled softly at his reaction; he was always like this, even when you would put on your pajamas after a long night out patrolling, he would think you were the most beautiful sight he ever set sight on.

“Thanks for finally noticing,” You laughed out loud as he began to make his way over to his uniform, “I almost thought that you forgot who I was for a moment, you know, with how involved you were with whatever it was that was on the computer.”

Tim scoffed as he turned around and placed a hand over his heart in disbelief with a playful smirk on his lips. “How could I ever forget you?” The way he said it and the look he gave you made you turn away to hide the blush that was forming on your already rosy cheeks.

You came to climb the stairs next to him, shoving his shoulder playfully every time he would shove you back. When you finally made it to the top of the stairs and stood in front of his uniform, you both took a moment of silence to admire the well-tailored suit.

“What happened to all the cuts and soot stains from the last time you went out?” You questions as you remember that the suit was almost damaged beyond repair the last time he came back; Bruce really ripped into him on that last one before he pulled him aside in the shadows of the cave to give him a bone-crushing huge and telling him that he was just grateful he made it back alive.

“Bruce had Lucius make me a back up and this is it while he repairs the other one,” Tim explained while he opened up the case and started to get undressed right in front of you. You struggled to get your sentence out about changing in front of you, but you just decided to enjoy the view while you both continued on with your conversation.

“Oh, okay. Well, may I ask why you’re getting suited up right now?” You questioned him, making him stop for a moment to gesture to the computer before continuing to pull up his pants. “I mean I saw you tracking some criminal activity, but couldn’t you just forward that one of the boys out there right now? I’m sure Jason would definitely take care of it.”

“I’ve been tracking those goons for the last couple of days to find out where they’re doing their dirty work and now that I finally found it, I’m gonna shut them down.” Tim answered with slight excitement as he finished pulling his shirt over his head, “I’ll be damned if I let one of them, especially Jason take credit for my work.”

You just laughed as you held his Bow Staff for him. “Alright, I guess that’s fair… but I was hoping that you weren’t gonna head out tonight because I had plans for us to finally catch that movie you’ve been dying to see for the last couple of days.” You confessed, ruining your secret to surprise him for once in his life.

Tim turned around to give you a sincere smile and came to give you a hug, following up with a kiss on the crown of your head. “That’s… very nice of you to think of me, but like I’ve said the other times, it’ll have to be pushed back. Crime calls and I definitely cannot answer.” He looked into your doe eyes, seeing the slight disappointment that he wasn’t going to cave for just one night.

“Oh Tim, you stubborn boy…” you shook your head as you looked at the batcomputer then back at him, “I know you won’t cave, even just for one night, so just go on ahead and head out.”

“(Y/N), I’m sorry, I truly am. I’ll make it up to you, I promise,” Tim grabbed your hands and gave them a gentle squeeze while he tried to get you to look at him; he didn’t like to leave you when you were upset, “The night’s still young and maybe if I get this done quick and make it back with enough time, we can go see the movie, if you’re up to it?”

You gave him the side eye, thinking about his offer, before saying, “Yeah, sure deal. All you gotta do is just make back here in one piece. That’s all I ask.” You pressed your pointed finger into his chest, making him laugh, “I mean it. I want you to call up one of them while out there and let them assist you. I don’t want you coming back to me all bruised and bloodied...or worse.”

Tim sighed while rubbing the back of his neck, “Alright, fine. You just stay here for the time being.”

“I’ll stay on the comms for you and the rest of them if any trouble arises. If you need any help, you can always call me.” You reminded him as you followed him down to the batcomputer and to the vehicles. He was going to his designated one when you had remembered that he left his communicator on the desk hooked up to the computer. While he was still inspecting his car, you retrieved it for him and met him by the front of his car.

“Alright, well I got to get out of here before something sudden changes in their routine.” Tim was climbing into the driver’s seat of his car when you called out to him, making him freeze and look at you with confusion evident in his eyes.

“You forgetting something?”

Tim’s eyes got wide as he got out of the car and raced over to you and wrapped his arms around your waist before planting his lips firmly on yours, taking you completely off guard. With your eyes still wide open, you wrapped your arms around his neck and pulled him closer to you while his hands traveled up your back, one coming to cup the side of your face as you melted into his arms. His lips tasted like french vanilla and it made you want to go in for more, but he pulled away so suddenly, leaving your desires stranded.

“That takes care of that.”

You giggled as you bent over to control yourself. He stood there confused at your actions while all you did was hold up his communicator in the air. “I was talking about this, but the kiss was also needed too.”

Tim’s face tinted slightly red before he snatched his device and made his way back to his car. He waved to you as he drove out of the cave, leaving you standing there in your spot, lightly brushing your fingers over your coffee smelling lips with a smile plastered to them.

S: What's his face- the one that you said Rodimus would make out with-?

O: I like that!

O: Hello, and welcome to the Afterspark Podcast, an episode by episode recap of the Generation 1 Transformers cartoon! I'm Owls!

S: And I'm Specs.

O: And today we're going to be talking about episode number 41: Making Tracks. Let's talk about giant robots today, shall we?

S: Sure, let's do it. Once upon a time in New York City, something, something, cars being pretty-

O: So we open up with two punks in the background on a rather beat up pink car.

S: In the foreground we see a blue corvette stingray with a large winged Autobot logo on its hood.

O: ‘Cause it's a Tracks episode y'all! 

S: One of the punks says, “Those wheels are rude!”

O: Wait, wait is that- was that actual 80’s slang? I feel like I've never actually heard that used by, you know, a person.

S: Neither have I and I don't know- neither of us existed then, which I guess dates us rather.

O: We were but a twinkle in our fathers’ eyes. 

S: Apparently, Tracks is just what they've always wanted as the two punks pick his door locks and hop on in. 

O: One gets into the driver's seat and the other spots an expensive looking red boom box in the back seat.

S: They jam to some tunes on our buddy Blaster.

O: I'm really confused, why do they not just use Track’s stereo? 

S: Maybe they're listening to whatever cassette Blaster has got in his player.

O: Ah, yes, the soothing sounds of Eject. Please note: Eject does not actually appear in this episode.

S: Yep, he is Sir-not-appearing-in-this-film today.

O: Because Soundwave is allowed to have buddies but Blaster does not get any for a while, I swear.

S: They're on break. They're always on break.

O: They're always on break.

S: The two punks drive the new joy ride to a shady warehouse and meet an even shadier man.

O: Apparently Tracks is only worth $800.00, which is still too little- even adjusted for inflation at $2526.99. 

S: Oh, that's so accurate.

O: Thank you, inflation calculator. 

S: I would think that he'd be worth, you know, closer to $8000.00 in current, uh, US dollars but this is probably a chop shop and they're definitely not getting paid market value if we're here- for anything here.

O: I’d say they're getting ripped off, even.

S: Yeah.

O: So Tracks says nothing about this clear insult but transforms into robot mode, scattering all the humans.

S: One of the punks is still carrying Blaster, who transforms and picks up both the punks like two naughty little kittens. 

O: The shady chop shop guy makes it just outside the door before running headlong into Optimus and then he pulls a gun on Optimus and shoots at him.

S: And it's a laser gun, no less. How did this man get a laser gun?

O: Though the power of 80’s cartoons and they're not allowed to use real bullets.

S: Oh maybe this should have been our first, uh, hint about who our true enemies are on this episode. 

O: Perhaps, maybe.

S: The Autobots head on back to Sparkplug’s garage after, you know, finishing busting up that chop shop

O: Is this a new thing that Sparkplug’s acquired since getting chummy with the Autobots or has he had this this entire time?

S: He's the most interesting man in the world, I mean it could be either.

O: It really could, but to make this more confusing when they arrive back at the garage it really does look like an Autobot construction of some sort, not a man-made one.

S: It's even Autobot orange, how about that?

O: Hey, you know, do you- do you think they went shopping for just the right Earth paint color to match? Like they can- or did they have paint on the Ark? I-I have concerns, I have questions.

S: Someone probably went and got, you know, color swatches and compared them to the Ark.

O: They made Sunstreaker do it.

S: Oh, Sunstreaker, Tracks, and they went and, you know, got Carly because she had better color vision than Spike.

O: Obviously. So Tracks talks about how he likes New York and he could stay here forever.

S: His teammates poke fun at Tracks cosmopolitan preferences, even saying he'd rather hang out with humans than them.

O: Okay, so apparently Tracks is so attracted to humans even before meeting Raoul that the other Autobots regularly kink shame him about it.

S: Oh, he just cares about the culture. He's a man of culture-

O: [Laughter] Uh-huh, uh-huh. 

S: If you will.

O: Sure. 

S: Our current New York roster includes not only Optimus, Blaster, and Tracks, but also Powerglide, Cosmos, Seaspray, and Hoist and Huffer.

O: Yay, Cosmos!

S: It's gonna be a weird, weird day for New York.

O: Yeah, they must be used to it by now. Optimus sends these various Autobots out to patrol the area but Tracks walks off in a huff to go take a drive.

S: And apparently the state of New York City is so bad in the 80’s that immediately after getting on the road three dudes run out into the street and try to rob whomever they think is driving Tracks.

O: Those windows are either tented or these are the dumbest robbers in existence who are trying to rob an empty car.

S: They're opportunists. Dumb opportunists, because they are in fact the dumbest robbers in the world as they eventually realize that there is definitely no one in that damn car.

O: And they also have laser guns and shoot at Tracks.

S: One of the shots hits his tire and he goes careening into a convenient lamp post.

O: Obviously, Tracks is devastated by the cosmetic damage. 

S: He has discovered that New York is not all bright lights and fancy shit.

O: It's also men with laser guns. 

S: Tracks tries to transform but apparently getting dinged up like that was just too much damage.

O: A young man sees Tracks and is basically like, “Oh well, it's damaged but still a sports car. I'm going to take it home with me.”

S: What he actually says is: “Well, apparently nobody wants you so that makes you mine,” like, that is not how that works Raoul!

O: Haven’t you read fanfic? Of course that's how that works!

S: Well, considering some of the random accidental baby acquisition things that I've read-

O: What!? [laughter] Baby acquisition was the thing that got said to me today! I had to hear it now so do you, dear listeners.

S: Let's put it this way sometimes fanfic is very weird.

O: Indeed.

S: Accidental acquisition- accidental baby acquisition. ...Yeah, no, that is not how any of that stuff works. Tracks is currently unable to drive and the man enlists some people to help push him into an abandoned lot of some sort.

O: Of course, this young man, as we alluded to earlier, is Raoul and he, again, comments on whoever owned Tracks before, he owns him now.

S: Tracks replies, “Nobody owned me, I'm mine.” 

O: Raoul did not expect his new car to talk to him tonight.

S: Well, I think if I was Raoul i would have, uh, maybe taken a step back to-

O: Rethink my life choices?

S: Yeah, but so- yeah, Tracks asks Raoul to repair him and we find out that Raoul intends to sell him, presumably because he has promised a car to two dangerous characters named the Geddis brothers by midnight.

O: Raoul says, “The first time I try to steal a car and I get one with a big mouth.”

S: Track is being somewhat snooty about however Raoul got car parts at this time of night but Raoul's not in the mood to get, you know, a lecture from a car.

O: He pops open Tracks’s hood and comments on “What the hell is all this machinery?” only, you know, without the hell because we are talking about an 80’s cartoon, before snipping an innocent looking wire.

S: Cutting said innocent, delicate, little wire completely incapacitates Tracks.

O: Because, apparently, that's the main cable to his computer and that seems like quite a design flaw. I hope that doesn't become important in any way, shape, or form later in this episode!

S: [Laughter] Hint.

O: Hmmmmmm..

S: Sea spray is patrolling the river and is cranky about humans being litter bugs. 

O: While Powerglide and Cosmos report to Prime that they have not seen any Decepticons or Tracks.

S: Hoist complains about being stuck in traffic due to a car accident and hops out of Huffer to help.

O: Which is hilarious because Huffer is shorter than him in robot mode but Hoist apparently has no problem riding in him.

S: And when we say riding in him, we mean riding in his cab, not in his back seat or you know-

O: Whatever you want to take that as an innuendo for.

S: Well, that wasn't what I was thinking- I was just- he's not riding in like a pickup truck bed or something.

O: Oh, yeah, okay I get ya. Huffer laments that they can't all just fly like Tracks before we cut back to Tracks and Raoul.

S: Tracks is looking much better as this front end has been hammered out and, you know, fixed up and Raoul is in the process of polishing him.

O: Which I'm sure Tracks is appreciating. 

S: Mm-hm. Two large, adult men have apparently stopped by to shake this teenage boy down.

O: These are the Geddis brothers and they want their car and even call Raoul a bad little boy.

S: Yeah, that's, um, well I mean that's incredibly creepy, by which I mean it's the creepiest thing they could have possibly said.

O: In this exact scenario, yes. Raoul’s in immediate danger! Cut to commercial.

S: Or Shockwave modeling, you know, striking a pose. 

O: And after we're done with that, uh, we're back and, uh, these guys insinuate they're going to give Raoull his own set of cement shoes.

S: Well I guess they're part of the mafia or something?

O: I don't know what they are but yeah they're like, “Uh, can't give us a car? Murder.”

S: Yeah, and then Tracks comes to the- well, comes to the rescue by driving up and transforming and putting the intimidation on and because, you know, and the guy's grand plan to get away from the giant metal man is to chuck Raoul at him.

O: Who is, obviously, caught gently in Tracks’s hands and is totally fine.

S: Tracks is a very careful fellow.

O: Yes, I would hope so.

S: So the two Geddis brothers hop in their car and speed off. 

O: Cue a not so high-speed car chase as Tracks transforms and chases after them with Raoul in tow.

S: Passing by such renowned New York locations as the Casablanca Abba Cafe.

O: Don't forget about the Appliance Store and Bar or, quite possibly, the Store and Bra. We can't tell. 

S: It's unclear. Also the Fashion Forker.

O: Because I don't know what was going on with these names but, boy, are they a joy to read. Raoul thinks that they have lost the Geddis brothers but Tracks says, “Hardly,” and takes to the air.

S: And it is at this point that, uh, rap- Tracks finally introduces himself to Raoul.

O: Yeah, Raoul's basically just been calling him ‘car’ this entire time, I think.

S: I'd rather suspect Tracks has been pouting over that. 

O: Probably. Uh, Raoul and Tracks do lose sight of the guys near the docks and head back to the empty lot from before.

S: Tracks has reached the conclusion that the Geddis brothers are working with the Decepticons.

O: Which, you'd think, if you were working closely with either the Autobots or the Decepticons, you'd take the time to learn their damn badge colors so you don't accidentally ruin your entire plans by mouthing off to the wrong bot, because I don't remember what the Geddis brother said to Tracks but they were, like, “Wait? What are you doing here?” or something, I think, to Tracks.

S: Yeah, something like that and, I mean, it's an 80’s cartoon. Nobody's getting points for intelligence here, except maybe Perceptor.

O: Because Percy always gets intelligence points. Tracks asks Raoul to take him to where the brothers are storing the stolen cars and Tracks says he's going undercover... as a stolen car.

S: Again!

O: You know, because that's what you just spent all night doing.

S: He knows what he is. He knows he wants- he knows he has to be the damsel in distress here. They arrive down at the docks and see a parade of cars on a bridge crossing the Hudson into Jersey.

O: I regret to inform you that at this time we are legally obligated to make a New Jersey joke. A-hem! Of course the Decepticons are in [New] Jersey! 

S: Ah, the Geddis brothers crossed the bridge and Tracks and Raoul will follow.

O: Back with Powerglide, he reports spotting Starscream to Optimus. 

S: Starscream realizes pretty quickly that he's being followed and tries to lose Powerglide but is shot at by Cosmos who wishes him a terrible day.

O: You know, considering the last time they met, I can hardly blame Cosmos for not liking him.

S: Neither can I because, yeah.

O: That whole idol thing? It just didn't go over super well, you know. 

S: Yeah. Starscream lands and transforms, running into a shopping mall that somehow- somehow scale to fit them. Roughly.

O: And somehow still open. Like Tracks, earlier, kind of insinuated it was rather late at night, but whatever! Cosmos and Powerglide follow him in but Starscream opens fire on both of them and the smattering of humans in this huge- again- very empty mall.

S: Yep. Powerglide and Cosmos repeatedly lose sight of Starscream, who really should still be in their line of sight.

O: Because he's like one floor up from them! That's how this is going, essentially and so I'm just like, “Do you two need your optics checked?” 

S: Maybe!

O: Ratchet, it's time for an eye exam!

S: Yeah, time to check out their sensors. Starscream gets the drop on them again and knocks them off a higher level of the mall before escaping via smashing through the ceiling.

O: Because nobody can use a fucking door.

S: Yeah, no one can really use a door here. Powerglide and Cosmos report into Optimus who, based on Starstream's escape direction, concludes the Decepticons are in New Jersey and most likely the Pine Barrens.

O: Pine Barrens!? I am now massively disappointed by the lack of Jersey Devil in this episode.

S: I don't think they have the budget for the Jersey Devil.

O: I mean, if you've seen the Jersey Devil- I- Honestly, I am devastated, devastated! I did not get to see great Transformers’ animation for this demonic beast, because I want it so bad.

S: Maybe the Jersey Devil will appear in some other iteration of Transformers at some point. 

O: But will he be-

S: Just imagine it.

O: But will it be bad 80’s animation, Specs? 

S: Well, someone could do, um, Transformers versus American cryptids and potentially do it with bad 80’s animation.

O: That sounds like a delight.  However, speaking of the Pine Barrens, the Geddis brothers drop off all the cars and then they send all the drivers back to the city on a bus.

S: Of course, the camera pans over to the right and we see Megatron who was apparently in, uh, plain sight this entire time or showed up extremely stealthily in the last five seconds.

O: The Geddis brothers having delivered the shit ton of cars, asked Megatron where their million dollars is. Megatron being Megatron just aims his fusion cannon at them and says, “Right here.”

S: They shoot at Megatron with their teeny little peashooter laser guns which is just as ineffective against him as they've been against all the other giant robots that have been shot at in this episode.

O: The two humans manage to dodge the fusion cannon blast and presumably run off into the woods.

S: Tracks and Raoul are in the trees nearby and Tracks only just now attempts to contact Optimus but is unable to due to a broken radio.

O: Soundwave and Rumble are loading cars into a giant conveyor belt as Tracks gets closer to investigate.

S: Tracks is really pulling a Daphne this episode, it feels like.

O: [Laughter] It really is. 

S: As the cars are pulled into the building Scrapper is waiting just inside with a giant sword- I keep wanting to say laser sword but I don't remember- and he hits them with the sword. Tracks is not happy about possibly becoming robot sushi and the wire repair from earlier conveniently chooses that moment to fall to pieces.

O: Raoul used electrical tape, or at least it certainly looks like electrical tape, and speaking from experience- electrical tape does not just fall apart like that!

S: It's plot. 

O: [Laughter] I know it's plot but they should have used, I don't know, like masking tape or something that doesn't stick very well.

S: It’s plot. 

O: [Laughter] Oh, right, right, right, right- switching my brain to off.

S: Raoul notices that Tracks isn't moving and whisper-shouts at him to get out of there. 

O: Tracks is immortal danger, time for a commercial break.

S: Raoul runs out and yells at the nearby Cons that they'd better not touch his car.

O: Megatron gives him a look that can only be described as “Where the fuck did this one come from? We had gotten rid of the humans.”

S: Unfortunately, humans are a bit of an infestation, Megatron. 

O: Raoul-

S: They will turn up wherever.

O: They truly will, and then Raoul lies and says he had a bomb in his car.

S: Raoul goes big. 

O: Megatron then threatens him with his fusion cannon for a bit, uh, because he wants him to remove the non-existent bomb.

S: Starscream and Soundwave are just, you know, chilling nearby.

O: Rumble was just here. Is he on coffee break? 

S: Probably.

O: [Laughter] See, the Decepticons have legally mandated breaks is what I'm getting from this.

S: They stop at the conveyor belt and Raoul fixes Tracks, who quickly transforms and opens fire.

O: And then the two of them basically run away. 

S: Yep, and Ravage and Rumble follow on foot. 

O: So much for that coffee break, but now Tracks is running low on energy because he's kind of been all over the place tonight. 

S: He feels faint.

O: And he plans to make his last stand in robot mode.

S: Hey, you do what you got to do, I suppose. But Raoul runs off, trying to draw the cassettes away.

O: And Ravage nearly gets him before being tackled out of nowhere by Sideswipe.

S: Bee and Jazz arrive as well and the three of them chase off the Cassettes. 

O: Tracks and Raoul are brought back to the Autobot base or Sparkplugs’ garage anyway, and shortly after the missing cars which were modified by the Decepticons begin to enter the city. 

S: Optimus, Ratchet, and Blaster attempt to stop as many as possible on a bridge. I mean, good idea: natural choke point.

O: Right but then all the cars transform into robots and fire on the group of Autobots. 

S: Meanwhile Bee, Sideswipe, Inferno, and Tracks take on the cars that have already entered the city. 

O: Thankfully the cars are terrible shots and miss the Autobots. Unfortunately, they end up hitting a nearby skyscraper and it gets on fire now.

S: Inferno goes to play King Kong and climbs up to put it out and then Ironhide, Huffer, and Windcharger engage another group of cars.

O: I love that when these Decepticon cars transform all of their robot modes are the exact same red and yellow color scheme despite their vehicle modes all being different colors.

S: Um, the- the Decepticons got all of that, uh, got all that paint on discount or something.

O: [Laughter] Obviously.

S: On the bridge, Ratchet examines one of the downed cars and realizes they're being, you know, they're remote controlled.

O: So they broadcast a jamming signal and all the nearby cars, at least, stop.

S: The Autobots then head to the Pine Barrens to destroy the Decepticon base of the week that Tracks and Raoul found before.

O: Optimus yells, “We're putting your company into bankruptcy, Megatron!” Did Cybertron have bankruptcies?

S: Either that or the Autobots have been very well educated on Earth's financial systems which I would not put past, you know, Prowl insisting that they know.

O: Right my brain just went- obviously, Spike told them about this. Then they were educated about Earth financial institutions by a 14 year old boy mostly just because it's funnier. 

S: Oh and probably, uh, Sparkplug coming in and having to-

O: Correct him?

S: Re-educate them. 

O: [Laughter] Anyway bankruptcies aside, another firefight ensues.

S: Raoul has the power of a crowbar and God on his side and runs into the building to destroy the control panel but is quickly snatched up by Megatron.

O: So, wait, you're telling me that not only did Raoul just march off into that building, by himself, to wreck shit but also that Megatron was prescient enough to go inside and stop him despite being outside three seconds ago?

S: Yep.

O: Alright then.

S: Megatron walks back outside with Raoul and tells the Autobots they’d better stop firing.

O: Raoul, to his credit, is attempting to get out of Megatron's hand this entire time.

S: Tracks is threatening to turn Megatron into scrap metal, himself, if he harms Raoul.

O: Again, they've known each other for, like, a couple of hours, tops. They're, like, ride or die, it's great. 

S:Mm-hm. Unable to get out of Megatron's grasp, Raoul reaches into his coat and pulls out a can of spray paint, mashes a button on Megatron's torso, opens a panel and then sprays paint into it. 

O:This is apparently enough to completely incapacitate Megatron, who falls onto the ground. 

S: Soundwave and Rumble grab Megatron and fly off to the main Decepticon HQ.

O: And they're never seen again. Obviously not. But, uh, a well-placed shot from Tracks causes the entire building to go up in flames.

S: Well, that was, uh, incredibly badly built.

O: Are you insinuating that the Constructicons have shoddy workmanship?

S: Well, they may not have been the ones called in to do that this week.

O: I mean, fair. He has so many. Even the Constructicons need a break.

S: Back in New York all the Decepticon cars are parked in and around Sparkplug’s garage.

O: They plan to fix them all and return them to their actual owners but Sparkplug’s not sure if Ratchet and him can handle it, even with Wheeljack helping out. 

S: Raoul takes this as his cue to leave but Tracks walks over and picks him up and drops him next to a nearby car, apparently volunteering his labor. 

O: The two bicker good-naturedly as the episode ends. So they are a couple now, right? Right?

S: Mm-hmm.

O: Yes!!

S: Or at least ride or die buddies, who may eventually evolve into a couple.

O: For clarification they're not actually in a romantic relationship because this was the 80’s but there is some fanfic which we have for recommendations in a moment but join us next time for: The Autobot Run. In which the Autobots will do no running... because they will not have legs.

O: Uh, if you're not aware from my jokes during this episode, I actually really like Tracks and Raoul as a pairing so I just actually had these all ready, uh, which doesn't happen that often. Um, so our two picks for today are: “Danger, Sudden Swerve” by Chibibee or, uh, Rebecky_Mo in parentheses. It is G1 Cartoon, it is PG-13, it's slash, our pairing is Tracks and Raoul. Our characters are Tracks and Raoul, and in summary, “All it takes is one wrong turn to find yourself somewhere new and amazing.” Uh obviously this is based on this episode having Tracks in it and it is a collection of shorts.

O: And then our second fic for today is: “Following the Tracks” by LittleMissSweetgrass. Continuity is actually Transformers Prime for a change. It is rated T, it is slash again, characters and pairings are Tracks and Raoul although I do want to point out that there's actually a lot of characters from a lot of different continuities that get pulled into this one which makes it a lot of fun. So a lot of the human characters from IDW show up, um, as well as some Autobots that basically got humanized as human characters within the context of they were in relationships with some of the other human characters but, uh, it's really neat- it's nice to see some of these characters that have basically not popped up in anything for years like, uh, is it Asteria or Astoria? Uh, the one that's in love with Powerglide.

S: Yeah.

O: She pops up- 

S: I don’t actually remember her- I don't remember her name, I'm afraid. 

O: I bet- but her, the rich chick, uh, pops up. So does Chip. It's really nice, definitely recommend, uh, it is unfortunately ongoing so has not completed yet, so I'm, like, it's- it's very good and I read every single update, uh, but in summary, “At the start of Transformers Prime they mentioned that it's been three years since the last Decepticon attack but what if it was also the last time they lost a team member? Tracks was attacked and abandoned in New York City with no way to contact his fellow Autobots. It just so happens that he meets a young man that will help him survive amongst the humans until he can make it back to his team. But what if they can't make it back to them before they leave Earth?” And again it's a Tracks/Raoul  recommendation.

S: I know I need to read that one.

O: It's just- it's okay I have had the worst time keeping up with fics this year because 2020 is the gift that keeps on giving. I realize this will get posted in 2021 but we are recording it at the end of 2020.

S: Yeah, it's been a bad year, folks but I think you already know that.

O: Most people do anyway. So our, uh, [art] recommendation for today is Lantana, uh, they have a Tumblr and a Pixiv and their thing is chibis basically, uh, kind of, uh, that's a bit of an oversimplification but their colors are lovely and they have some very super-super-super-duper cute chibi robots. They're soft, they're colorful, I love them, and I want to give them all hugs. So, uh, some of the ones we're recommending: one of them is, uh, it's basically at least an IDW-esque Megatron but done up as a medic. That makes a lot more sense if you've read the comics, I'm sure, um, and then there's one where, uh, they decide- where his Decepticons decide to get him a birthday present. That birthday present is basically a, you know, a captured and tied up Optimus Prime in a giant present box.

S: Tied up with a big pink ribbon.

O: Of course. And then our other one is a Soundwave with a bunch of itty-bitty kitties and him feeding them. It is super cute.

S: Like, initially, I thought that this was a weird Polly Pocket situation where Soundwave had a Polly Pocket house for cats in his chest- it does not but-

O: That would be funny. They've also got a lot more stuff they've posted since I added them to our recommendation list, that is also gorgeous including some Shattered Glass stuff which, because, I love Shattered Glass and there's not a ton of stuff of it, so, uh, yeah, check out their work. My father's car insurance was canceled for non-payment. He pays for the insurance every six months. Apparently they stopped mailing him bills and sent a bill to his email account. A Part Of Something

Rip Hunter spent his life trying to protect time and the people he loved but lost absolutely everything because of it. No family, imprisoned by the organisation he created to replace the one that betrayed him and shunned by the team he brought together. Safe on a new Earth with the now human Gideon, Rip has a chance of a new life with his best friend at his side once more. Feeling comfortable in his new surroundings Rip begins to look to the future and where he fits into his new world but after Gideon’s near abduction his fear of losing her once more begins to push her away.

Part One - Tentative Strides

Gideon lay on her back staring up at the two people looking down at her.

“I think this was a bad idea,” she said, taking Rip’s hand to help her to her feet once more.

Alex frowned, “You need to learn to protect yourself, Gideon. That’s twice someone has come after you now.”

“I do understand this,” Gideon replied.

“Then we’re going to continue our training,” Alex told her sternly.

Rip bit down an amused smile at Gideon’s sigh of frustration, “You know if you want, I could always help.”

“No,” Gideon stated instantly.

Alex looked at them bemused, “Why is that a bad thing?”

“I happen to be well aware of what happened the one and only time Rip trained cadets,” Gideon replied.

“That was because I really didn’t want to do it,” Rip reminded her.

Intrigued Alex asked, “What did you do?”

“Okay,” Rip stated slightly defensively, “You have to understand we were stuck at the Vanishing Point because the ship had been badly damaged, meaning Gideon could only barely keep me alive after I had been injured on a mission.”

“Due to your insistence on following a plan I said would not work,” Gideon reminded him.

Rip sighed, “You spent six months berating me at the time. I don’t need you to repeat the lecture.”

“So,” Alex motioned Rip to continue before they started to argue.

Rip smiled at Gideon, “My superiors decided they weren’t happy with the way I’d handled my assignment and began an investigation. Since they grounded me I was bored. I couldn’t even get away to visit Miranda while waiting for the Waverider to be fixed and the investigation to be over. Druce, my...” he paused, a flare of anger appearing in his eyes at the name before he continued, “Mentor, I suppose is the best word, got a bit sick of me hanging around annoying him so made me take on the self-defence training of his new recruits.”

Gideon smiled, “Which he truly regretted.”

“What did you do?” Alex demanded intrigued.

Rip shrugged, “I just made sure they understood the rigours of time travel.”

“All eight of them ended up in the medical bay,” Gideon reminded him.

Rip shrugged again, “Then I did my job.”

“I can understand why you don’t want him to train you,” Alex noted with a chuckle, checking the time she sighed, “It’s getting late. Let’s finish there for just now and we’ll go over everything tomorrow.”

Rip turned to Gideon again, “Are you ready to go home?”

Gideon nodded, “Allow me to change and I shall meet you upstairs.”

Giving her a quick smile Rip left while Gideon headed to get changed.

Since their encounter with the meta-human who had played with their minds Rip had become even more protective of Gideon than before. When Alex brought up the idea of self-defence training for Gideon, Rip not only agreed but also suggested some weapons training just in case.

He had also become more open with them. Alex felt that somehow seeing Jonas again, even in the unusual way it happened, as well as telling her about the last conversation he’d had with his son had helped unburden Rip.

J’onn hadn’t revoked Rip’s credentials for the DEO, in fact he happily allowed the other man in whenever he wanted. Despite Rip’s insistence he didn’t want to be a part of the DEO J’onn had discovered that if he approached Rip in the right way he could get the other man to discuss possible missions, offer his thoughts on agents and give the benefit of his experience on operations.

“Do you want to join us for dinner?” Rip asked Alex when she found him sitting at Gideon’s station.

Alex blinked surprised by the offer, “I can’t. I have a date.”

“Anyone we know?” Rip asked, surprising her even more at expressing interest in her life.

��Blind date,” she winced, “Honestly I’m not looking forward to it but James fixed it up then set Kara on me to agree.”

Rip chuckled, a smile touching his lips when Gideon appeared, “Have fun.”

Alex rolled her eyes at him watching as Rip wrapped his arm around Gideon’s shoulders leading her out of the DEO.

  “I think I have bruises on my bruises,” Gideon complained when they entered their apartment.

Rip chuckled, “Have a bath and you’ll feel better.”

“Why did I agree to let Alex do this to me?” she grumbled, dropping to sit onto the couch rolling her sore shoulders.

“Because someone tried to abduct you,” Rip stated seriously, “For the second time.”

Gideon winced, “I know.”

Moving her to turn slightly Rip sat so her back was at his chest, resting his hands on her shoulders Rip gently began to massage, “Give it some time and your body will get used to the exercises.

She leaned back moaning softly while Rip’s fingers pressed slightly harder into the aching muscles in her neck and shoulders. Rip continued the massage for about five minutes before he kissed her cheek.

“Run yourself a bath,” Rip told her, “I’ll make dinner.”

When he left her Gideon watched him for a moment. She wasn’t quite sure what changed recently but something had. Pulling herself off the couch with a groan Gideon went to run a bath hoping it would help.

  “Hi, Rip,” Kara greeted him finding him sitting on the couch in James’ office, “What are you doing here?”

“I have absolutely no idea,” Rip replied.

“I’m trying to persuade Rip to take a job with Cat Co,” James spoke up.

Kara blinked in surprise, “Really?”

“Really?” Rip eyed James suspiciously.

“Don’t you have an assignment to get to?” James distracted Kara quickly.

She winced, “Yes. Just wanted to make sure we’re still on tonight?”

James nodded, “Definitely. You’re still the only one who knows the system Miss Grant had so I need you to find the files.”

“No problem,” she beamed before bouncing away.

James held up his hand to stop Rip speaking, he checked his watch before nodding, “Sorry, I don’t want Kara to overhear us.”

“I’m guessing I’m not being offered a job?” Rip asked amused.

“We don’t actually know when Kara was born since the Earth-Krypton calendar doesn’t work that well, so we celebrate the day she reached Earth as her birthday,” James explained, “It’s in two weeks.”

Rip stared at him a little confused asking, “And you want me to hire the bar for a party?”

“In her pod was a small cube thing that we think has some holographic scans of the planet,” James explained, “The engineers at the DEO have tried to repair it but haven’t been able to. Alex and I thought you might be able to.”

Rip frowned in thought, “Kryptonian technology?”

“Could you fix it?” James asked.

“I can look at it,” Rip replied, “I’ve seen their technology before, had to escape a prison on Krypton once,” he shook his head before James could ask, “Long story. I’ll see what I can do. Why not just have Alex ask me this when I’m at the DEO or at the apartment?”

James laughed, “Because Winn is at the DEO, while Gideon is at your apartment and both are terrible at keeping secrets like this.”

“Good point.”

“And J’onn doesn’t know that we’re asking you to do this yet,” James added making Rip roll his eyes in amusement.

Rip stood, “Tell Alex to let me know where it is once you’ve got permission and I’ll start working on it.”

  Rip studied the device from Kara’s pod on the bench in front of him in the small lab J’onn had provided. This was hopefully to be a present for Kara but it was also a puzzle and Rip had always enjoyed solving puzzles. Especially ones that were connected to working with advanced technology.

There were times it amused him thinking that he had been born in a time long before computers had been invented but they were something he found so easy to work with. Removing the casing Rip smiled slightly because he did recognise the technology so he settled down to work.

Rip was well aware that J’onn’s security was not lax, that he hadn’t simply forgotten to revoke the credentials which allowed Rip into the building and able to use the systems. He was allowed in because J’onn wanted Rip to feel comfortable enough to help them.

As much as he didn’t want to be in the field, or responsible for people, he had recently began to wonder if J’onn would be amenable to him working with the science teams. The leader of the DEO had been happy to let him help with the Phoenix so Rip hoped J’onn would be happy to let him work on any alien tech that came in.

It was now eight months since he’d found himself in another universe, since he’d found Gideon again and, for the first time in a very long time, Rip was beginning to feel normal – relatively speaking anyway.

He liked this new life he had. Liked spending time with Gideon but he was also beginning to seek out Alex’s company and felt a lot more comfortable around the others.

It was time for him to come out of hiding.

  Gideon giggled at Lena’s story along with Sam and Kara as they sat around Kara’s apartment finishing the pizza they’d ordered.

“And we’re out of wine already,” Lena frowned slightly lifting up the bottle.

“Gideon has that covered,” Kara assured her just before a knock came at the door.

Jumping up to answer it Gideon smiled finding Rip standing on the other side.

“You don’t like me being a barman,” Rip noted wryly holding up the bag with the bottles he’d brought, “But delivery boy is fine?”

Gideon smiled at him stepping back to allow him inside, “Stop being grumpy.”

Rolling his eyes Rip walked into the apartment placing the bag on the counter before turning and stalling to find the two women he wasn’t familiar with sitting there.

“Lena, Sam,” Kara introduced, “This is Michael Hunter.”

“You’re Gideon’s roommate?” Lena said.

Rip nodded slightly, “It’s a pleasure to meet you both. Gideon, Kara, a word please?”

Gideon caught Kara’s amused look as they followed him away from the two women who were now opening one of the bottles of wine he brought.

“Is Alex coming?” Rip asked them.

Kara shook her head, “She’s working.”

“How are you getting home?” Rip demanded of Gideon.

She rolled her eyes at him, “I can call for a taxi.”

“No,” Rip stated, “I’ll come get you.”

“Captain...”

“Until we know the people who are coming after you are gone then I am not letting you wander around on your own,” Rip told her.

Gideon frowned annoyed but before she could argue back Kara placed a hand on her arm.

“I’ll fly her home,” Kara promised.

Rip nodded, “Thank you, Kara. Enjoy your night,” he leaned over and kissed Gideon’s temple, “I’ll see you later.”

Giving Lena and Sam a polite nod Rip left the apartment. Gideon let out a long sigh as she took her glass of wine and sat again.

“He just worries about you,” Kara said as she took a seat again, “You know that.” Gideon let out an annoyed huff but didn’t say anything.

Lena leaned forward, “Let me get this straight, you live with the tall, handsome guy who clearly utterly adores you but you’re not a couple.”

Kara smiled, “It’s complicated.”

“I wouldn’t mind that kind of complicated in my life,” Lena noted, making Sam chuckle.

Gideon frowned, “Can we change the subject?”

The three women shared a quick look before Sam started telling them about Ruby’s friend.

  Rip looked up from his book when he heard the noise coming from Gideon’s room. Jumping up he entered the room just as Kara disappeared. Gideon closed the window before she walked past him out of the room ignoring him as she headed to the kitchen.

“Gideon...” he started following her.

She pulled out a mug to make herself some tea, “You do not get to do that.”

“What?” confusion filled him.

“I am not a child, Rip,” she slammed the mug onto the counter, “I am not your property anymore. You do not get to decide for me what I do or where I go.”

Rip frowned, “I wasn’t.”

“Then what was that at Kara’s?” she snapped anger in her eyes, “Telling me I could not come back here on my own.”

“You were snatched off the street outside this very building, Gideon,” Rip snapped back, his own temper getting the best of him, “Someone tried to abduct you again only a few weeks ago. Am I supposed to ignore that? Am I supposed to not worry about you?”

“I am well aware of what happened, Rip,” Gideon retorted, “But I refuse to let the people responsible dictate my life. I am not an AI any longer. I no longer have to follow your orders. I am human and I have free will to do what I want.”

Rip shook his head, “So, you’re just going to make it easy for them?” he threw his hands in the air, “Why don’t we just let Marcus out then he can take you directly to whoever these people are. It’ll save us waiting for the next time they come after you. Considering what happened the last time then the free will you want to exercise will mean nothing.”

Anger flashed in her eyes before she walked into her bedroom returning a few minutes later with a bag.

“Where are you going?” Rip demanded.

“Somewhere I do not have to put up with you,” she snapped, marching out the door and slamming it behind her.

Rip hesitated not sure whether or not he should go after her. His phone buzzed just as he decided to chase after her

‘She’s with me,’ the message from Alex made his decision, ‘Let her calm down before you try to apologise’.

Rip grimaced, quickly typing back, ‘Why should I apologise?’

‘Because you’re being an overbearing ass.’

  Kara was surprised to see Rip when she walked into the gallery for the show she was here to cover. She made her way through the crowds to the bar where he was serving drinks.

“I didn’t think you did the parties,” Kara said when she reached him.

Rip shrugged, “The guy who was meant to do this is sick and I’m the only one who wasn’t working so I’m doing Deena a favour.”

Kara smiled accepting the glass of wine he handed her, “Thanks.”

He gave her a quick nod before turning to serve the couple who were waiting. Kara headed further into the room to look at the paintings and sculptures she was here to write about but couldn’t stop looking over to the man at the bar. Despite how composed he appeared to be she could see the weariness in his eyes.

Feeling sorry for him she wandered over again with her empty glass.

“Are you okay?” she asked softly, “I know Gideon is still staying with Alex.”

Rip sighed rubbing her eyes, “She hasn’t spoken to me for a week. She’s been mad at me before but never like this.”

“Have you apologised?” Kara asked.

“I’ve tried,” he told her sadly, “Several times but every time I manage to even find her she walks away.”

Reaching out she rested her hand on his arm, “Give it a little time. Gideon loves you. She can’t stay angry at you forever.”

“She used to be an AI,” Rip replied with a sad laugh, “Trust me she can hold a grudge.”

Before they could continue the doors around the room burst open and several people ran in, all holding weapons shouting at everyone to stay where they were.

Rip glanced at Kara as they both tried to work out where she could go to change, stalling when the room began to glow green. A gasp of pain from his side made him turn to find Kara’s face pale; he caught her keeping her upright.

“What’s wrong?” Rip whispered worriedly.

Kara looked up at him, fear in her eyes, “Kryptonite.”
