4am Knows All My Secrets
AO3
They don’t really talk about it, but they’ve all noticed it.
It started early, before Beau even admitted that she liked them at all, long before she ever said the word ‘love’ to any of them.
In Shady Creek Run, Keg had gotten her own room, Beau got her own room, and Caleb and Nott shared. In the early hours of the morning, presumably after her companion for the night had left with her pockets full of gold, Beau woke Caleb by opening their bedroom door. She walked in quietly, cursing under her breath when the floor under her feet squeaked, and curled up on the wall opposite the bed to fall asleep. He never knew if she knew that he was awake, but they never talked about it, both content to pretend that it hadn’t happened. She was gone when he woke up to the morning sun shining in his eyes, like she’d never been there at all.
She was given her own room in the chateau, right down the hall from Marion’s suite where Jester was sleeping in her old bedroom. Fjord woke up when the sky was still dark from hissing whispers in his dreams and found her stretched out on the floor next to his bed, snoring loudly into the crook of her elbow. He didn’t know when she’d wandered in but he picked up one of the blankets on his bed and dropped it on her, trying to make it look like it could have been an accident and not him purposefully trying to help her, he didn’t think she’d like him to know that she was there. She was gone in the morning when he woke up to a knock on the door and his blanket was folded up and sitting at the foot of his bed.
Caduceus was already awake, still sitting up on his bed when the door creaked open one night. Beau didn’t look at the bed as she started to creep in, but when she finally glanced up and found him staring at her, her eyes widened and she swiftly stepped back out of the door and shut it behind her. He heard her tiptoe down a few doors to Nott’s room instead and he heard her unmistakable snores from that direction a few minutes later. He didn’t mention it when she came down to breakfast the next morning.
It’s Yasha who mentions it first, when she comes back.
“Does Beau sneak into your rooms at night?” she asks.
Beau is on a morning run around the neighborhood, leaving all her friends to have breakfast without her.
Fjord blinks in surprise. “I thought it was just me. Yeah, sometimes I wake up and she’s asleep on the floor and she’s gone in the morning.”
Jester looks confused. “Oh, well, we share a room but I have noticed that she won’t go to sleep unless I’m there. I thought she was just worried about me.”
Yasha sighs in relief. “Oh. Good. I was worried that she was doing it because she didn’t trust me again yet.”
Caduceus hums thoughtfully. “She wouldn’t sleep there if she didn’t trust you, Yasha,” he says with a kind smile. “I… suspect that Beau cannot sleep when she’s alone.”
Caleb and Nott exchange a look. “I thought it was something like that,” Nott said.
Caleb nods in agreement. “Why do you think that is?” he asked.
Caduceus shrugs. “That’s a question for her, I believe. I’m not an expert on her motivations.”
“Beau’s not even an expert on Beau’s motivations,” Fjord says, fondly. “She might not even know why she does it. She definitely won’t like that we know about it or else she wouldn’t sneak in after we’ve already gone asleep.”
They all looked up when the chimes rang out from the foyer and Beau walked into the dining room a few minutes later, sweating and breathing deeply but smiling at them. It’d been a while since she’d just let loose and run as fast as she could without something chasing her. It was nice.
“Morning,” she said, pleasantly. “What’s for breakfast?” She leaned over Caleb shoulder to look at his plate and plucked a slice of grapefruit off of it. Caleb just let her, he was used to it by now. He did scowl at her when she held it back in front of his face a moment later. “Sugar.” He frowned but picked up the sugar shaker to sprinkle some on the grapefruit. She ruffled his hair and shoved the grapefruit into her mouth, grinning as she took the chair next to him. “Thanks, man. What’re we talking about?” she asked, her mouth full.
“About how you-” Caduceus started, smiling innocently.
“-Are just so, so badass!” Fjord interrupted, grinning widely and elbowing Caduceus in the side.
She raised an eyebrow and smirked. “Really?” she asked and Caleb sighed. He could tell by the tone of her voice that she didn’t believe Fjord’s hurried lie. “What kind of things are you saying? I wanna hear about how badass I am.”
“We were talking about…” Jester paused and come up with a quick list. “... how strong your muscles are, how… how smart and good at coming up with plans and ideas you are, how uh…” her voice squeaked in nervousness. “... how cool you are.”
“Right!” Nott exclaimed. “And you… I can’t think of anything she’s good at. Punching! She’s good at punching.”
Caduceus frowned at them. “I thought that we were talking about how she cannot sleep alone and sneaks into our rooms at night.”
The others tensed and watched Beau’s face carefully but her expression didn’t change. She didn’t give any indication that she had heard Caduceus say anything. Not surprise, not defensiveness, not anger, not embarrassment. Her face was entirely blank.
“I don’t do that,” she said, her voice scarily even as she started eating a piece of toast from the plate in the center of the table.
Jester frowned and twisted her fingers nervously. “Beau… you don’t need to-”
“I don’t do that, Jester,” she said, still with no emotion in her voice.
Jester nodded and turned to stare at her plate. “Right.” She cleared her throat. “Not that there would be anything wrong if you did do that! Everybody has their thing, right? We’ve been through a lot of shit, nobody is gonna come out of that feeling 100% okay, yeah?”
Beau shrugged but her face still didn’t change. “I’m fine. Hasn’t affected me any. Can we change the subject?”
And so they did.
No one really thought about it for a few more weeks. Not until the night Jester fell asleep in the living room with Nott, halfway through a braid in Nott’s long hair.
Caleb was sitting up, reading by candle light, when he heard the door to his room creak open. Beau’s head looked around the door and she cleared her throat and looked away when she caught his eye. “Sorry, uh- wrong room.” Which didn’t make any sense because Caleb’s room was the most separated from the other bedrooms.
As she moved to leave and close the door behind her, Caleb called out. “Ah, Beauregard. You can sleep in here. It is alright.”
“I’ve got no idea what you’re talking about, I’ve got my own room.” But she didn’t close the door.
“I will not ask any questions if that’s what you are worried about.” He pulled his spare blanket out from under the bed. Frumpkin gave him an irritated look because he had been using it as a bed but the cat hopped onto the wood floor and then leapt up onto the bed. Caleb took one of the pillows from behind his head and sat it on top of the folded blanket. “Here. You can use these.”
She hovered in the doorway for a moment, then stepped inside and shut the door behind her. She picked up the blanket he offered her and shook off the orange cat hair before laying it out on the floor.
“Thanks,” she said as she laid down. She folded the pillow in half and propped it under her neck. “Don’t… Don’t tell anyone about this?”
“Of course not. We would understand, you know. There is no reason to be embarrassed.”
He thought she might deny being embarrassed about it but she just sighed. “I know. I’m just… The things we’ve seen, the things that have been done to us… I just get scared sometimes.”
“Ja,” he muttered, blowing out his candle and laying his head down, staring at the ceiling. “Me too.”

Pandemic trip to South Korea
10/22/20 - 11/22/20 If you haven’t yet been to South Korea, I highly recommend it.
Why South Korea?
I wanted to visit South Korea for over a year since I discovered K Pop (and especially K R&B) and started watching K Dramas.  Here’s a gorgeous scene from the historical romance Mr. Sunshine.
Tumblr media
My goal is to consume K content without subtitles. After studying on my own and hiring two different language teachers, I wasn’t improving much. In this situation, I rely on immersion.
I also listened to Miyoko Schinner’s Home Comforts where she cooks every Friday on a theme. That day, she was cooking Korean food inspired by her recent trip to South Korea. She said there was an entire vegan street in Seoul.  Then she said she brought a rescue dog back to SFO as the volunteer courier and that it was really easy.
As a 1st world country, South Korea shouldn’t be as challenging to navigate as other places.
Why now?
Yes, it’s odd that I’d be traveling during a pandemic where there’s a deadly airborne virus spreading across the globe.  Don’t get me wrong, there were a few bright spots during the year, Animal Run’s 1st Virtual Event being one, but combine the factors of
South Korea being a model for having one of the best containment strategies in the world (they never truly had a shut down)
Random lock downs in California
Weight gain from working from home
Working from home all by myself (with my cats)
I was buying useless things online
One cat passed away
Heat waves
Multiple forest fires
An extra-depressing day of being trapped underneath the dark smoky skies without sunlight
6 months left in a contract job that doesn’t require much brain power
Another crazy presidential election looming
I haven’t gone overseas since 2014
I’ve never been there before so my anticipation level was high
I wanted to bring a rescue dog back with me
My partner was OK with holding down the fort for a month without me
My job approved working remotely for two weeks and then taking two weeks off
10 days after getting approval from work, I boarded a plane to quarantine for two weeks and then explore the small but mighty country.
What’s the worst that could happen?
I could die. But when it’s time ...
I could catch the virus and spread it. But I was quarantining so bringing it back to the US was more likely than bringing it into South Korea.
My work laptop wouldn’t work.
Flight to Seoul
Tumblr media
The direct flight was 12 hours and super easy. The plane was only 1/3 full so I was able to lie down and sleep for most of the trip. When I woke up, there was only 1.5 hours left before I landed at 4am.
Tumblr media
Stuck 4 hours at Incheon Airport
I pride myself on my research. Sure, I only had 10 days to study but I’ll watch a few YouTube videos and do some Google searching of what quarantine would be like. Then once done with my quarantine work day, I’d plan how to navigate the country which I knew very little about.
Fact: When you don’t know what you don’t know, that’s just life testing you.
The plane landed smoothly and I turned on the airport wifi which was much stronger than SFO wifi. We walked over to immigration and they asked me why I was here. I’m a tourist. Do I know anyone in South Korea? No. I was able to pass to the next section.
Down the hall, there were several tables with young military people interviewing everyone who just landed. I sat down and they asked what I was doing here. I’m a tourist. Do I know anyone in South Korea? No. Do I know anyone with a South Korean phone number. No.
They explained they needed to call a South Korean phone number with someone on the other end who would pick up and say that they would be my “guardian” during my time in South Korea.  I told them that I thought the procedure was to install a sim card in my phone so I could be tracked wherever I went. They said no, they didn’t know about that, but I still needed the Korean phone number.
I told them to call my hotel which I reserved for after quarantine. The hotel denied my request. Until I could come up with a phone number and guardian, I could not leave the airport.
This was the moment I became worried. I wracked my brain for someone I knew might have a contact or relative living in South Korea.  I called Greg first to tell him the situation and to see if he had any patients who could help.  He did not.
Next, I called a co-worker from several years back and several companies ago. She picked up and suspiciously said “Hello?” I explained my situation and it was a VERY awkward conversation. Ultimately, she was not able to help.
I decided to text a friend of a friend whom I’ve never met. A good runner friend FB introduced me to him a few days before my flight. He was kind enough to give me some recommendations of places to visit. I explained my situation in text. If I was lucky, maybe he would respond in the next hour or two.
After 3 strikes, I felt some panic and decided to sit down on the airport floor and take several deep relaxing breaths. After a few minutes of sitting quietly, it occurred to me to call the US Embassy. This thought came directly from my Peace Corps experience where I learned that embassies are there to bail out their citizens in trouble. So I requested a call to the US Embassy and he thought that was a great idea ... except that they are closed on Sundays. Sigh.
I knew they have an emergency number though. I hesitated in calling that number since my situation was not life or death, but I thought about sleeping overnight at the airport ... so I asked the guy to call the emergency number.
The woman on the other end was confused. She told me she had not heard of this requirement and thought that the procedure was to install a sim card on my phone. But she spoke to the guy and said she would straighten this out in 15 minutes.
WHEW!!!!!!
While we were waiting for her to call back, I learned that these full time military guys (not the 2-year mandatory military people) are rotated into the airport twice a week to do this interviewing job. I asked if there were other people like me who didn’t know about this requirement. He said yes. I asked him what those people did.  They also panic dialed people they knew, but I was the first (that he knew about) to call my Embassy.
I made it it through that critical step. My next step was to go ahead and install the sim card anyway. Another nice English speaking guy said he would help me, which was great, because the sim card lady spoke no English. Everything was going well until she hit a screen on my phone asking for an unlock password.
UGH!!!
I had paid AT&T in full to own my phone so it could be unlocked for this trip. This was a big missed step.  Oh well. The nice lady gave me my receipt, instructions on how to install my personal sim card back into my phone and a Customer Help number to call from my hotel during quarantine.
Just one more interview before I was allowed into baggage claim. This guy asked me what I was doing in South Korea. I’m a tourist. Did I understand that I’d be quarantined for 2 weeks and that I would be paying between $1,400-$2,100 USD and that these prices are set by the Korean authorities?  Yes.
Finally I was allowed to get my bags. With my brain completely fried, I descended to baggage claim and promptly made a wrong turn. I wandered through the intimidatingly cavernous baggage claim section. It was a strange experience to be in a fully lit air hanger with no other soul around, with no sound and where nothing moved. I certainly got my steps in.  After what felt like forever, I finally saw someone who pointed in the right direction. I picked up my bags and was told to board a bus headed to my quarantine hotel.  My plane landed at 4am and I boarded the shuttle at 8am.
Quarantine
It took 30 minutes from Incheon Airport to Gimpo’s Ramada Encore Hotel. This is a random quarantine destination probably depending on the time of day each bus leaves from the airport.
Tumblr media
I was excited. I officially entered South Korea ready to experience a two week quarantine in a new country. Hopefully, this was going to be the closest thing to prison that I will ever experience.
When we parked in front of the hotel waiting for our instructions to disembark, a Russian woman with an infant started to cry.  She had an apartment in Seoul so the quarantine thing was a mistake. She didn't pack any diapers or formula for her baby.  She decided to stay on the bus because she didn't want to implicitly agree to the quarantine. I hope it worked out for her. There were about 10 other people on the bus with me.
We disembarked and lined up in front of people in hazmat suits who told us to line up, leave our luggage, and enter the processing room.  This was the hotel dining area or conference room which looked like a semi-organized mess.  Tables and chairs were stacked on top of each other.  The hotel was no longer a hotel but was a "processing center" so it looked like things were just shoved aside to make room for processing equipment.  There is no hotel staff.  These were employees of some agency.
Tumblr media
The hazmat people taught us how to use the daily temperature check app (we need to take our temperatures 2x day) and assigned our rooms. I asked how many people were quarantining in the building? ~300. How many quarantine centers there were? 5-6 hotels. I told them I was vegetarian since vegan was not an option. They charged my card $1,450. I was lucky.
I got room 901. Once I went in, I cannot step outside of it for 14 days. As I took the elevator up and walked down the hall, I noticed orange bags filled up in front of the doors.  Those were the orange garbage bags with the hazard sign on it so that it would all be disposed of like radioactive waste.
Tumblr media
I entered my room and it was HOT.  I looked at the temperature gauge and it was 28C (82F).  I tried opening the window and it opened, but not enough to let cool air in. I tried the air conditioning setting but it was broken.
There was a sign on the inside of the door warning me not to leave the room but to call the command center for questions. I called that number and told them that my air conditioner was broken and they said they turned it off, because it was fall, but they'd send up a fan. Sigh.
Tumblr media
There was a white plastic bag on the floor with my welcome kit. 2 bottles of water, a toothpaste tube, a toothbrush, several small hotel hand soaps, slippers, five small hand/face towels and what looked like a cigarette box but had 10 small servings of instant coffee.
Tumblr media
I heard a knock on the door and it was food along with the fan, both wrapped in plastic bags. The food was AMAZING!  It was in a plastic tray and the main item was cauliflower and two awesome banchan, chillied perilla leaves and sweet yellow pickled radish.  So much flavor!  Whatever I suspected containing egg or dairy was thrown out along with the rice. With three meals a day, I was never hungry and I even managed to lose 4 pounds during quarantine.
Tumblr media
I started unpacking and took a shower because it was so hot. When I stepped out, the hotel PA system turned on and a woman's voice said in English "Sir on the 9th floor in a red shirt, please go back to your room immediately."  Oh boy. I would find out later that my room has a hidden camera, because the PA system would go on reminding people not to smoke inside the room.
I checked if my laptop worked. It did!  Whew!!!  Then I heard a knock on the door.  It was two guys in hazmat suits ready to give me my first covid test.  I asked the first guy to help set up the TV screen as my 2nd monitor. BIG win since I didn't need to struggle with the Korean instructions.
Tumblr media
Then the 2nd guy took my temperature, swabbed my throat (I gagged) then told me the last step was going to hurt and which nostril would I prefer? I said "suprise me" and he proceeded to invade my brain through my right nostril. It was HUGELY uncomfortable but not quite painful. It felt like that nostril was drowning while I was still able to breathe through the other nostril.  Once it was over, I had a headache. I decided to call it a day and knocked out hard.
Quarantine Days 2-13
I woke up Bay Area time at 8 am which is midnight in Korea. The deal was to work during Bay Area hours then take 2 weeks off to explore.  I arranged the room to make it a home for the next 13 days.
Tumblr media
I pushed up the twin beds to give me more floor space. I set up my work station. Hung up my clothes. Placed all wastepaper baskets outside my door so that I wasn't collecting garbage inside my space.
youtube
My biggest fear was that something would happen to my work Chromebook during the trip from my house to the hotel. I was SO pumped to know that it was working once I popped it open. The following morning though, I noticed the battery was really, really low.  OMG!!!  I only had an hour of charge left.
I checked the cord connections were firmly attached and looked up the voltage requirements.  The US has 110V and South Korea has 220V.  The plug said the laptop was fine to use in both. I verified online as well. Basically, I didn't need to have the cord plugged into the $50 voltage converter I bought specifically for this trip. I could plug it straight into the wall with an adapter.
My humidifier, my toothbrush and my monitor had appeared "broken" as well. I plugged in my humidifier directly into the wall and it started working straight away. Although I was VERY nervous about it, I did the same for my laptop.  I listened for a “pop” sound in case the higher voltage fried the device, but I didn't hear one and saw that the laptop was charging normally.  WHEW!!!  That made me realize that most of our electronics are made in Asia and probably had to be modified for the US.  I didn't need to spend over $100 on two voltage converters from Best Buy. Lesson learned.
I needed Greg's help with contacting AT&T to unlock my phone screen. That was a huge help. But then, I realized that I wasn't getting text notifications, required for some apps for identity verification. So I contacted Korea Telecom (KT) hotline to ask them how to fix it.  They sent me an email with English instructions but the texting still didn't work. Ugh!  They told me I needed to talk to tech support but but since they don’t speak English, I would need help from a Korean speaker. This ended up being very inconvenient but not terrible.
Lesson: Next time, I’ll just rent a phone from the airport with a separate data card installed.
Luckily the room was non-smoking so I didn't have to deal with a bad smell. Plus, there was ample shampoo/conditioner and body gel wash in the shower so I didn't have to use my supply. But what I saw in YouTube videos, I didn't get detergent and daily coffee. One YouTube video guy, who also quarantined at the Ramada, did mention that the floor was dirty, which I can confirm.
I asked for a vacuum, detergent and coffee from the command center.  They gave me a sticky roller for the floor (I used two of them), an extra bar of soap for my clothes and told me they don't give more coffee. I can have as much water as I wanted though. I went through two sticky rolls, used the gel soap for my clothes and ordered coffee online from GMarket. Delivery takes 3 days so I had to ration my little mini sticks of instant. Rationing those sticks was my biggest challenge during the quarantine situation. Otherwise, it was fairly pleasant because I stayed busy working, exercising and vacation planning.
I strapped my phone onto my body to track my steps and tried to surpass it every day. The highest I got was just over 5k steps and averaged around 3.5k steps. I wrapped the 50-pound band to the door handle and did rows every time I threw something out on the other side of the door. I used the other 50 pound band for triceps and biceps.
The early morning wake ups are cold and that's the best time for me to cardio. Then once 8am hits, the sun hits my window and it gets warm very fast so I have to use my blackout curtains and turn on the fan. I wash my clothes while I'm in the shower and let them dry overnight.
I would also get infrequent Covid cell phone alerts (like Amber Alerts) related to the residents in Gimpo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As I traveled around the country, I would get these alerts for the region I was in. When I returned to Seoul, I noticed the alerts were more frequent, but then again, 50% of all South Koreans live in Seoul.
Day 14 Covid-Free and Freedom
If I had someone to pick me up, I could’ve left at midnight on my last day. But I had to wait to take the shuttle at 8:30am to be dropped off at Seoul Station, which is the main hub to the rest of South Korea via KTX train or subway.
When I finally left my room to go back down that elevator to Floor 1, the wind hit me like a jump into Lake Michigan. My room had been so warm that the 45 F degree weather shocked me.
Once we were dropped off 30-minutes later, I took a taxi to the hotel, initially to the wrong hotel, but eventually landed at the Nine Tree Premier Hotel Myeongdong II on 28 Mareunnae-ro.  There are three Nine Tree hotels so getting the address correct is important.
Check in was at 3pm, so I left my bags and hit the streets like a race horse out of the gate. I happily overdid it by getting lost on the subway and walking over 10 miles on Day 1.  Four of those miles were pure stairway climbing because the subway system in Seoul is like navigating an underground mountain range. I continued to overdo it on Day 2-3.

In the 2009 drama, Cheomseongdae was constructed when Queen Seondeok was still a princess; this was her first decree as a princess. Cheomseongdae was meant to share the knowledge of astronomy with everyone, rather than letting one person (Lady Misil) abuse the knowledge of it. By doing so, she also abdicated her divine rights. Because this was uncommon at the time and unsupported by many conservatives, at the opening of Cheomseongdae, barely any nobles showed up.” - Wikipedia

WEEK 4 RECAP: “Power, Chase Bank Complaints, and TYPHOON SEASON”
As I stated in my previous posts, I’m really really really sorry for the delay here on my WEEK 4 RECAP. Granted, my weeks have started to become pretty routine; But I still like to keep my word with you guys and blog every weekend, despite the topic being my humdrum weekdays.
Tumblr media
Anyway, let’s get to it:
Monday:
My monday was one for the books, honestly. I stayed in bed all day long blogging and doing homework and just being a bum. It felt awesome. We got in from the Philippines early this morning, and I didn’t actually get in the bed until about 4am, so I took the liberty of playing hooky, and NO RAGRETS!
Tumblr media
I only left the house to get breakfast with Bunny... We went to this breakfast joint by our house and I splurged on an egg scallion pancake, a breakfast sandwich, orange juice, and a hash brown patty. It was bomb, but who am I kidding, it’s always bomb. I didn’t end up doing my homework until later in the evening, which ended up backfiring because I had SO MUCH HOMEWORK TO CATCH UP ON. It was actually pretty insane, but I still got it all done. For dinner Bunny and I picked up some potstickers from the place right outside our dorms that you all have already heard SO much about because we literally go there multiple times a week. Like I said in my intro... HUM. DRUM.
Tuesday:
Today we went to the bakery before class, I had my daily tea, and barely survived the 3 hour period. After class we went to the gym, and I did leg day today. My legs were shaking so much, it was like they had turned to jelly over the weekend. I think this is due to the fact I took 4 days off🙄 but I managed to get my mile down to 8:30 today!!! Y’ALL!!! BASK IN THE GLORY!!! Progress!!! Slowly but surely!!!
Tumblr media
After the gym we went to a restaurant on the Shi Da market for lunch, and ordered fried chicken curry with rice and veggies. It was super good, and only 100 NT! (About $3.35 US).
Tumblr media
Afterwards, we went home and I took the longest shower ever, and then a nap (I really really needed it). I got up just to do homework, and then crawled back into the bed. I found a website that lets me watch Power online so that I can FINALLY catch up to the new season. BLESS UP!!! I started watching this show over the summer, but then I got caught up with other stuff so I never caught all the way up. I last left off on Season 2 Episode 7, but I heard the new season 4 is BATSHIT CRAZY so I need to catch up PRONTO. (Also, can I just take a minute and say I freakin’ hate Angela??? Ugh. Tasha is a ride or DIE and Angela comes waltzing in and I’m just mad as hell. Ghost is such a punkass. I literally cannot deal. Let me shut up while I’m ahead before ya’ll comment and spoil something for me.)
Tumblr media
...He still fine as hell though... :-’)
Tumblr media
For dinner we went to the Gong guan night market to get Gua Bao (remember those pork hamburger things from my “WEEK 2 RECAP” post? “Gua Bao? Gua BOMB!”) and egg scallion pancakes. We didn't leave the house until after 11pm, so alot of our options were closed at that point.
Wednesday:
I actually got up on time to head to the bus, and I was WELL RESTED!! Wow, such a rare occurance. In class I got a 95% on my dialogue quiz today. I’m getting used to pulling these A’s, but our lessons have gotten significantly harder so I find myself reviewing the characters twice as much as usual. Ew.
Tumblr media
At the gym I did chest/shoulders/abs. I wore the wrong leggings to the gym today... I wore my normal black leggings instead of my work out leggings, so I didn't do cardio because I didn't want to be all sweaty in my normal cloth leggings... I don’t know I'm weird I guess?? But my ass was looking PHAT at the gym since I had normal leggings on hehe
Tumblr media
After the gym Bunny and I tried this Italian spot by our school. They have a lunch menu where you can get a dish AND a side for 99 NT!!! (3-4$ US). What a deal!! I ordered pesto penne pasta and pumpkin soup as my side. Pretty plain, but still super yummy!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After lunch I went home to shower and do my homework and relax. Bunny and I got dinner around 9 because we were STARVING more than usual. I guess the soup and pasta didn’t do it for me. We hopped on the bus to head to Gong guan, but we missed our exit so we ended up taking the bus all the way to our school to go to the Shi Da night market there. MIND YOU I LOOK LIKE A CRAZY CAT LADY. I twisted my hair up and put on two bandanas after taking a shower and putting product in... and I had on a long flowy printed dress I got from the Philippines. Needless to say I looked crazy, in my shower flip flops. We got the soy sauce noodles to-go, with green beans, udon, cabbage, broccoli, and tofu. I also got to chat with my mom on skype tonight which was nice, after struggling to get her speakers to work (for like 20min) so she could actually hear me. I stuffed my face while on the phone with her, and she cheekily said “how come whenever I get you on skype you ALWAYS EATIN??” Then proceeds to laugh hysterically and say “you gonna regret it!! It’s gonna go straight to your hips!!!” ......So charming *eyeroll*, gotta love her lol....
Tumblr media
I went to bed super late because I had the migraine of a lifetime. I think it might have been because I didn’t get a tea this morning... Caffeine headaches will be the death of me.
Tumblr media
Thursday:
I woke up with the same migraine, and was moving slow because I was so tired and my head was banging!! It was like the drummer guy from Whiplash was putting in WERK on my forehead. I was about 10 minutes late to class... I tried to rush because I knew we had a test in class, but I just couldn’t bring myself to get out of the bed on time. Kokoro (the Japanese student in my class) and I rode on the same bus to class, he was late too because he had gone clubbing last night! On a Wednesday??... Turns out, it doesn’t matter what day of the week it is here, it’s lit at the club every night.
Tumblr media
Class was good today. It didn't feel like it dragged as much. But, I was starving the whole time because I didn’t have time to grab some food before strolling into the class. Our teacher referenced the upcoming typhoon today! Meaning, it will be pouring, dumping rain all next week, starting this weekend. There will also be fierce winds. She told us how many people stay home and grocery shop a lot beforehand because transportation and a lot of businesses are closed. For those of you who don’t know, a typhoon is basically a hurricane. I'm not mentally prepared. Our teacher said that typhoon season lasts three months, starting in August. I’m nervous about the food aspect because we don't have a fridge in the dorm so I'm about to be eating perishables all week... canned beans and rice? God, I’m not excited. But maybe class will be cancelled a few days this week? A girl can dream!!!
Tumblr media
In the gym it was leg day yet again! My legs weren’t half as shaky as tuesday so that’s good. I ran a 8:45 mile, after almost DYING on the first treadmill I hopped on. I was adjusting the speed and the treadmill skipped and I almost flew the fuck off. My arms were flailing and I let out this loud/awkward noise and everyone was looking at me. I caught my balance and didn't die, but I definitely quietly turned off the machine and moved to another treadmill shortly after. I think that messed up my mojo because while I was running I was constantly paranoid of the same thing happening on the machine next door.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the gym the three of us went to Shi Da market. I pulled out cash from the ATM but was pretty bitter about it because I looked at my bank statement and my bank (Chase Bank) charges a $5 FEE WITH EVERY NON-CHASE ATM WITHDRAWAL that I make... THAT ADDS UP?!!! Are u kidding me??! I’M BROKE AS IT IS CHASE, CUT ME SOME SLACK!!! I'm so salted. I hate Chase Bank. They suck ass. Do you know how many WITHDRAWALS I’VE HAD TO MAKE WHILE HERE??? I need a Charles Schwab account because it seems like they’re the only bank not trying to PLAY US.
Tumblr media
I tried a new place for lunch where they had these small fried dumplings. I would show a picture but I inhaled it so fast that I didn't get to. So here's a picture of the box...hehe
Tumblr media
I also got some more dragonfruit today    V   so so good.
Tumblr media
After the gym I came home, showered, and relaxed. I ended up napping around 8 and woke up at like 10:30pm... I did my homework in class so I'm probably just going to eat something small and crawl back into the bed. I got a banana at the Family Mart convenience store and some apple juice and a pack of yan yans. Yan Yans are those pretzel stick things that come with the chocolate dip and they’re super good?? I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. I talked to Karis on the phone, and then Paris shortly after that. It was SO GOOD to see Paris’s face and hear his voice after so long. :-’) I miss you roomie!! I knocked out again after hanging up with him.
Friday:
This morning I woke up to a power outage on our Gong guan campus. If this is any tell of how the rest of the weekend/next week is going to be with the upcoming typhoon, I am not ready.
I got a 99 on my quiz today... I. AM. HURT. It was so so close I could taste the perfect score!!
Today I brought my umbrella to class because the typhoon starts this afternoon/evening. Class breeezed by because there was only 7 of us today. It was back day at the gym, and it was great! I’m definitely going to be sore. And I did some booty workouts on the floor afterward. After the gym we went to Gong guan market (the one by our house, not the Shi Da one by campus) to get some food and look for a SIM card for Bunny’s phone (so that she can have a local phone number and consistent data). We stopped and got pork buns and mango before heading home.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I got home I finally was able to decompress from the long week. I relaxed for a few hours before leaving the house at 10pm to go to the grocery store with Bunny. When we got to the grocery store, it was about an hour or so before closing, and it looked like the apocalypse hit. All the shelves were sweeped, but we got some food to get us through the weekend.... Like wine and rice and potatoes and eggs and snacks. After the grocery store we headed home to relax and shelter away from the upcoming typhoon.

Saturday:
I made breakfast this morning after finally leaving the bed at 1:30 pm. I made eggs and papas!! - An old fave. (Jaylene I miss you). I also cut up some apples too to eat with peanut butter. It was good, but the papas weren't up to par because I only had two seasonings... Sad day.
The rest of the day was spent in bed, watching Power and being a couch potato. At 8:30pm our power went out again, but only for a few minutes. It was getting pretty crazy outside at this point. You could hear the wind howling and tree branches swinging and water pushing its way through the cracks in the closed windows of the bathroom/bedroom.
At 9pm is when I spilled my Pink Moscato on my laptop. HOW COULD SOMETHING SO SWEET BETRAY ME SO HARSHLY?? My computer immediately died after letting out this depressing noise and became completely non-responsive...and so did I. I was on the brink of a meltdown. To keep from succumbing to panic, I put my phone on DND and went to sleep at 9:30pm. I literally knocked the hell out. That’s the best way to avoid problems/conflict right? Take ya ass to sleep.
Tumblr media
Sunday:
I woke up by 4:45/5am, and reality set in. I spoke to my mom on the phone, and she helped calm me down and rationalize the situation. I was a mess. I still am a mess. I cannot afford a new computer right now, and I'm nervous about going to get it fixed because I don't want to be taken advantage of, and I wouldn't know the difference either way... I'm clearly foreign. But I have 8 years of memories and information stored on this laptop, so I'm not letting it go without a fight. I called a few places that claim to fix Apple products on Google, but none of them turned up with any real answers. So after 12pm, I ended up going to the Apple Store at Taipei 101. I took a quick shower and brought a bunch of stuff I figured I might need: my laptop, external hard drive, a flannel, umbrella, towels, a hat, and snacks. I've never been outside when there was a typhoon brewing so it's better safe than sorry right? As soon as I walked outside I could tell something was off. There weren't a lot of people bustling about, and there were countless fallen branches and leaves covering the sidewalks and roads.
Tumblr media
I hopped on the bus, and then the MRT, to head to Taipei 101, the tallest skyscraper in Taiwan. I had this lingering thought in the back of my mind... let me illustrate... “Is it a good idea to go to the tallest sky scraper in Taiwan when there’s a hurricane with strong winds/ pouring rain just waiting to happen?”... All i could picture is the structure toppling over with all of us inside and causing this huge disaster, similar to something straight out of an Apocalyptic movie like 2012.... Anyway, I arrived just before 1pm, and come to find out, the Apple Store is CLOSED. I’m salty. All the lights are on and the store would otherwise look open, it's just that there's no one inside. It's completely empty. Even all the devices on display are powered on. It was kinda errie... Like those paper towns the military sets up, where it looks like a normal town and everything, just no one lived there...  I looked online (again) and went to their actual website where it says today (and only today) they open at 2pm instead of 11am. So I just waited around the mall for an hour until they opened. I found a bench and an outlet so I was just sitting here chilling....Glad I brought my snacks. ;)
When the time finally came to go back to the Apple Store, that overwhelming feeling came rushing over me again. I ended up crying like a PUNK to the customer service lady. So annoying!!! Ugh. I was a fragile mess. I spoke to two different managers who both spoke perfect English, and they helped to reassure me that they would try their best to help me. I have to come back tomorrow for a walk-in appointment with the Genius Bar. Fingers crossed they can help me, or at least retrieve/save my information.
I left Taipei 101 feeling pretty defeated, so I got some McDonalds on the way home... I know it sounds silly but I needed comfort food and something that felt like home. I ordered the filet o fish (which I crave daily), with fries and a coke. This was not my best moment, but the whole meal only cost 95 NT!! (Less than $3.20). CRAZY!
Tumblr media
I came home and that’s when I started reading my book that I keep mentioning, “You Are A Badass” By Jen Sincero. It helped me to feel better and get into a better frame of mind.
I took a break from reading to help Bunny make curry for tonight’s dinner. It was BOMB and came out fairly well if I may say so myself. I’ll definitely be making curry more often when I come back to the States.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I finished reading my book just before calling it a night. SUCH a good read I cannot stress this enough!!! I learned so much from Jen’s words and she adds funny stories/anecdotes and the way she describes things is just so relatable. If you have a chance to read it I definitely recommend!!!
I went to sleep pretty late, I was laying in bed catching up with Jay (via text) and other friends from back home. Before closing my eyes, I decided to practice meditation, which is one of the key concepts in the book. I wasn’t very successful the first time, because it was hard to clear my mind and just be still. I know it takes practice, so I’m going to try to dedicate time every day to meditate for at least 5 minutes! Feel free to join me on this challenge, it’s supposed to reap unprecidented benefits!
Tumblr media
Also, please pray that when I take my laptop in tomorrow to the Apple Store they can fix whatever’s wrong!!! I need all the prayers I can get. I’m speaking it into existence now: MY COMPUTER WILL LIVE. IT WILL RISE AGAIN. IT WILL POWER ON.
Until next time,
xoxo
