I am Etan. I have been previously known by other names, but this is the one you can have for now. My AO3 is benilos.

23 years old, I am American Indigenous, pronouns are he/they/it/majora. I am the creator Hyrule-Bound and Time and Time Again of the TCU media series.

As a little thank you to the kind anon checking in on me in my inbox, i’ve put together a few resources about creating an online fandom space that you will enjoy.  I’ll always advocate curating your space rather than, say, sending unkind messages to those you might disagree with.  To start, check out “Fandom Etiquette” and “Tumblr Tagging & Etiquette.”

Why should I? And what does that mean?

Curating your experience means prioritizing your wellbeing by avoiding content and users that are upsetting to you. You can do this by hiding and blocking content and users. It’s possible on almost any platform.

We’ve all got squicks and triggers and dislikes of all sorts.  Most importantly, your squick is probably not mine, and vice-versa.  Rather than eliminate all possible squicks, we can choose to moderate what we consume.

The idea behind Don’t like, Don’t Read - i.e., just let it go!

hey, thanks for being really nice and understanding! i quietly purged nearly my entire following list about six months ago, but it was a decision that genuinely meant nothing personal towards anyone or any one thing. frankly, i’ve had this blog for eleven years and i was following over 3,000 accounts—seriously, when i use to say that i rarely ever unfollowed people, i wasn’t kidding—most of which were totally inactive for years anyway. so i finally decided to shrink that number down to something much smaller and more manageable so that i could find/follow active people and see content that i actually wanted to see instead of 90% of my dash being muted or blacklisted topics. i’ve put a lot of work this year into curating my online spaces better and my brain really needed a calmer and less repetitive dash. unfortunately this resulted in me breaking a lot of long time mutuals and being extremely selective about who i stayed following. it’s very, very few people and that wasn’t easy for me at all, but i kinda figured most people wouldn’t notice. however, if anyone else out there happened to and were confused or hurt, i apologize! feel free to do the same if you want, no hard feelings. but anon, thank you for sticking around anyway. i appreciate this and i truly don’t mind hearing from you (or anyone) whether i am still following or not. ❤️

I wouldn't say it's anything dramatic or whatever lol I just started blacklisting it when I wanted to take a break from the show and the fandom spaces. Like, I still wanted to watch it because I love it and have a ton of fun but that was it, y'know?

I follow a limited number of people (which has been the case for years for me, it's not just a gg thing) so any content I didn't want to see was minimal anyway but it just seemed good to also blacklist the show. (When it came to twitter I just checked it less because I find muting/blacklisting content on there isn't as good).

At first (after 2x13-3x02, somewhere around there), I'd only blacklist for the day or two post-episode to avoid the influx of discussions and metas/analysis as well as any negativity, all of which are fine and the former two I'm sometimes very happy to see, but occasionally, it's just A Lot so I simply blacklisted some things (because everyone I follow tags to some degree!) and went about my day :)

Now though I tend to keep the show blacklisted and whenever I make an edit, I unblacklist it (so I can check my edit shows up in tags) and I spend some time checking out people's edits and whatnot before I add it to the list again. Occasionally, if I'm feeling like it, I'll simply just hit that "view post" button when a post crosses my dash :) Also during hiatus time if things are on the quiet side, I unblacklist everything (and maybe, once the show ends I'll leave off my blacklist for good? I'm not sure though).

I don't know, I've always kind of been on the outskirts of the fandom — by choice! I've definitely spoken to people who are all lovely and wonderful and everyone has been nothing but kind to me and welcoming! — so I've never really been thrust that deep into Good Girls on tumblr, especially not since around mid-late s2, but some distance from the fanon space on here just seemed like a good idea when all I wanted to do was, at the very least, enjoy the show.

Also, I want to say, blacklisting the show (through various general tags) was the easiest route to take because while the people I follow do tag, they haven't always used specific tags for certain things so a lot of content I didn't want to see made it through (which is why I make sure to spend time checking out edits whenever I unblacklist).

I realise this was a long reply to simply say "after a certain point I needed more distance and just wanted to watch the show and enjoy it" but hopefully, it makes sense?

This is to be respectful of artists. For picrews, if the name of the artist/picrew isn’t highly visible on the image, credit/link it.

4: No exclusionism or gatekeeping

No exclusion. This includes gatekeeping the use of queer and other reclaimed slurs. That being said, only refer to yourself and your community with reclaimed slurs. (Example: “queer community” is fine, saying stuff like “me and my fellow X’s” is also fine. Coming onto the server and being like “greetings f—s” isn’t okay.) Exclusionism includes aphobia, nbphobia, transmed and truscum rhetoric, panphobia, etc.

5: Keep conversations channel appropriate

If something applies to more than one channel, best bet is to go into whatever the conversation is mainly focused on. If something on the trigger list is part of the discussion, go to an appropriate trigger channel. When in doubt, just ask.

We don’t support censorship here. We support curating your online experience, using tags and blacklists to your advantage and keeping yourself safe against topics that trigger you. To start off with, I just want anyone and everyone who is currently new to navigating this terrain we call the internet to know one thing and that is this one very important concept. Embrace your own insignificance! The internet is a big place. I once read a post on here that encouraged new users to think of Tumblr itself like you’re walking into a Walmart. You’re not here to make friends and you’re not here to shop for everyone else; you’re filling your own cart with the things you need and like and if someone comes along and takes a long good look at the things in your cart and says, “WOAH there, eating trans fats is unhealthy for you! I never eat trans fats because of a big list of reasons! Stop buying trans fats!!” you’re gonna be both puzzled and annoyed because it’s your cart, your Walmart experience; why the hell do they care what you’re gonna get?

However! I get it, the internet is now comprised of six different websites/apps and if you’re on there, there is no way to avoid or curate a completely ideal sense that you’ve made a space that’s all your own. There are going to be people who disagree with you, people who decide they don’t like what you do, but ultimately, in the midst of all that, you’re going to find people who feel the same in whatever regard you express yourself and that’s why it’s important to just express yourself because otherwise you’re going to develop a lot of disingenuous connections with people who would likely try to ruin your life if you disagree with them on some subject or other.

Now with that whole disclaimer in mind, I also understand where you’re coming from. Putting myself in the shoes of someone just trying to participate in a new fandom where there is a lot of contention among the masses about the rights and wrongs of RPF and whether the concept fits in with a philosophical debate about human nature and the way we interact with each other, witness each other’s journeys. That’s simply it, however; it’s an ongoing debate and where philosophy and debate are concerned, I always hold the belief that an individual’s right to ground themselves and say “These are the principles I wish to abide by” is sacred and ultimately, no amount of anonymous hatred or shrieking messages of outrage is gonna change that until you yourself decide that the principle isn’t working for you personally. My principle is that it’s fiction; an AU to explore as valid and sweet to me as demon!Shane headcanons are, but moreso because I identify with queer love stories and friendships forged by strangely deep similarities and complementing souls. I also love personalities like theirs, love the idea of said friendship and what it would bring to a story about two human beings who meet by happenstance and end up building something world-changing together. Still, because I am just a writer and a consumer of media, that’s the nicest thing I can give myself, a fictional account of these things while witnessing the real version happen in parallel. I get to celebrate in the overlap of similarities the real world and my fictional account take and watch it inspire my friends and mutuals to build their own universes and it’s beautiful. 

With that point being made, I also understand the reason a lot of people are nervous about being open about shipping. The backlash from a bunch of strangers seems to take on a note that would make even the nicest person sound like a puritan about to hold some extravagant witch trials. Nothing more interesting than a person claiming to do good in the world using words like “exterminate” “cleanse” or my personal favourite “purge”. I’ve read rumours being spread about shippers that take on their own life especially because it’s human nature to let other people handle the research; it’s human nature to just take a believable narrative at face value. One rumour being that shippers of this fandom write stories where we kill off Shane and Ryan’s significant others. Myself and my friends who are avid readers of the ao3 tag know that that hasn’t been the case since 2016/17 and by all accounts, I have yet to find the fic where this happens (barring a tinsworth fic I’ve only heard about). Mind you, not many of us check out Wattpad but even there it’s more self-insert friendly with themes I can’t even stomach. 

Which leads me to the last point and the main reason you sent this ask, I’m assuming. Ryan and Shane’s personal thoughts on the issue. Now, it behooves me to supply screenshots and proof when I make a claim but let’s consider if instead from the perspective of two adult men who have operated online far longer than a lot of their audience. Given that I am the same age as Shane, I know what the internet used to look like and how far it’s come and RPF is not a brand new thing neither did it pop up out of nowhere when One Direction debuted. And just like fanfiction in and of itself had its pushback from media because of its demographic and absolutely because of its queer-leanings, RPF appears to get a lot of that same energy, but it’s not an inherently toxic past time. Much like any fandom activity, it can get bad because fandom is not a monolith; it’s a bunch of individuals enjoying a medium in the ways they have learned to. You’re gonna get some individuals who “do it wrong” and some who do it differently, but ultimately, just like the forums and the reddit threads Shane and Ryan trawl in their past time, there are circles you learn not to veer into and terms you learn to blacklist/block/mute. With that being an indication of where they’re coming from as internet creators, I am confident when I say that, as long as it’s not being mailed to them, linked or quoted at them, they don’t care. They would know something that gets popular on the internet summons a brand of transformative art and fiction but much like they tend to ignore thirst tweets in their mentions or the repetitive requests for the same things over and over. They’d see it and gloss right over it. Shane is the type who writes long essays on reddit addressing the things that bother him, Ryan is weird and vocal and an oversharer sometimes when it comes to things Shaniacs say to him (i.e. that Voice he did for the occasional Shaniac who approaches him). It’s just one of the incarnations of fandom that they choose not to engage with, which, good? Because it’s a fan-specific activity. Once in a while you get a creator who wants to interact with fanfiction and it goes sideways because not all stories are written for them, much like not all fanart is made with the mindset to share with them. 

It’s just a regular old fan interaction and community habit that builds bigger followings. 

All in all, I’m not gonna tell you what to do. Unless you mean to be in their @’s all the time or link them on discord, or put any of your content in their hands, they are not going to see it. They don’t care. What they do care about is that you’re watching, that you support them and send them encouragement because they’re creating their own medium of content and a bigger following means more people get to see it and extract something positive from it.

Do you ever mute people you follow?

Short answer: No.

Long answer: Okay, first of all, you can’t mute people here in Tumblr as far as I know? You can block them, or you can use blacklist for specific words if you have xKit. I have blacklisted stuff some blogs I follow very occasionally post/talk about, but aside from that, no muting/blacklisting anything else of them. In Twitter I have a list of muted words AND users yes (and their @/username and nicknames and everything you can think of, to ensure I never see a trace of their presence. And it still doesn’t work as well as I’d like). I don’t follow any of them, and I decided to mute them cause despite not following them, they’re so ridiculously popular I’d still find their unwanted stuff on my feed constantly.

If I ever find myself wishing I could mute someone, I take that as a sign I’d be happier unfollowing them tbh. The only exception was when Zofia got her withstand removed, and everyone and their dogs were engaging in stupid arguments all over my Twitter feed and being hella rude to everyone, like both sides were full on clowning, it was that bad. I muted the word whithstand for a few weeks and spared myself the agony of scrolling through all that bullshit and the growing impulse to unfollow more than half the people I followed.

Now, there are some people I follow whose posts I don’t see that often here in my tumblr dash, but I’d would chalk it up to timezone differences in posting times, not me having them muted 😂 I mean, seriously, why would I mute someone I follow?

I wanna say some things bc I’ve been mad about this subject for a while now. It’s not only about HypMic’s fandom, but about fandoms in general. Tho the amount of shit I’ve seen in the HypMic fandom has only been growing with time so I guess it’s time I position myself more clearly (as if it wasn’t clear enough where I stand lol). I’m sure I’ll get a lot of unfollows but guess what: I don’t care.

Some time ago on twitter a person who was very well known in the fandom was harassed out of it because they had LEFT KUDOS IN A “PROBLEMATIC” SHIP FANFIC. They were harassed to no end and accused of shit they never did and of liking things they didn’t even like BECAUSE SOMEONE FOUND THEIR USERNAME LISTED IN THE KUDOS LIST OF A FANFIC. They had so much shit thrown at them that they ended up deleting their account and leaving the fandom. Like, what the FUCK is wrong with you all? WHO THE FUCK DO YOU THINK YOU ARE TO JUDGE SOMEONE’S ENTIRE CHARACTER BASED ON WHAT THEY SHIP IN FICTION? YOU’RE A NOBODY, THAT’S WHO YOU ARE.

In another fandom I’m in, a person almost commited SUICIDE because they were harrassed bc of the art they drew and the ships they liked.

So let’s start by saying: this blog is a safe space for SHIPPERS, or, if you wanna call them (us!!) that, anti-antis.

So, you ship JyuJiro? Come here, pal, let’s be bffs rn, I love JyuJiro, as you all already should know.

You ship BBcest? That’s not my cup of tea so I don’t reblog/post about it, but I really do not care if you like it! We can be friends too!

You ship HitoJyushi? Also not my thing, but nice!!

You ship RioSabu in a non-unrequited way? That’s fine! I’m not into it bc it makes me personally uncomfortable since I can’t disconnect Saburo from his canon age, but that’s my problem. I won’t crucify you for being able to!

You ship Rei with Ichiro? I find that disgusting and if we’re mutuals I’d rather if you tagged it so I could blacklist it, but you’re not commiting a crime by shipping two bunches of pixels together so I’ll also not hate on you for that.

You ship literally anything in this godforsaken fandom? Go for it, my friend, it’s none of my business to begin with. lmao

I just DON’T CARE about what people like IN FICTION. I DON’T CARE. 

Of course, I’m bothered by shotacon/lolicon bc those are actual depiction of children and I’m very uncomfortable with CHILDISH BODIES being sexualized even if they’re just anime. But if you’re into shota/loli due to coping with past abuse (that I will not, in any circunstance, force you to disclose to me bc that’s a very personal matter that no one has the right to make you expose against your will) I won’t hold that against you, even if I’d rather avoid you bc the content you share makes me really uncomfortable. But yeah, this is the only “exception” in my “like what you like in fiction and that’s okay” list,

I’M TIRED of seeing people being harassed because of ships. FUCKING TIRED. NO ONE is committing a crime by shipping fictional characters, even if you dislike it, even if it makes you uncomfortable, hell, even if it triggers you. Here’s a thing: even if you project your abuse onto a specific ship or character, that’s only you. That’s your view. Your experience isn’t universal and everyone will not see your abuse in a ship because they don’t even know you. They will just see a ship that they will choose (or not) to see whatever they want in said ship. As long as the content is properly tagged, the person sharing it is already doing their “job”.

I’m sorry to break this for you but the entire fandom is not, and it doesn’t have to be, anyone’s safe space. EVERYONE has the right to be in fandom, including people who ship things you don’t like, and they have the right to share their content. Again, if it’s properly TAGGED. Create your own safe space, use the blacklist functions, mute words on twitter, mute or block accounts, the tools are all there, USE THEM.

So, if you’re an anti, a fanpol, a fancop, a fucking FANDOM POLICE, do us both a favor and get the fuck outta my blog. You’re not welcome here.

the things I’ve read in 2020 and some thoughts...

hey blacklist this now because it’s gonna get long from here. I spent NYE home alone and reading and it has really set the tone for this year. Fortunately, I’ve been reading way more for the first time in...I literally don’t even know? Maybe forever? Which is really dope! Books are fucking fantastic and I hope this trend continues for the rest of the year. So I’m gonna use this post (and continue to add to it as I finish books) to talk about the things I’ve read. It could be annoying. I could give up on it really soon. People might not read this at all. It’s okay! It’s my blog I’ll use it how I want and I want to talk about books I otherwise don’t really have a place to talk about them. 

The Shape of Water - Guillermo Del Toro & Daniel Kraus

If you know me irl you’ll know that I love this movie. Like, it’s probably my favorite movie as an adult. I love watching a movie and then going back and reading the book to compare and vice versa, but knowing that the book came out after the movie did discourage me at first, making me think it was nothing more than a cash grab. Though I was talking to (my boss) who also loves this movie and is a huge bibliophile and she highly recommended the book, so I figured I’d give it a stab.

The writing style is beautiful and enticing and overall I was impressed with the quality of it. It’s fast paced and switches perspective between characters frequently, though remains easy to follow. The book focuses a little less on Elisa and more on the other characters and stories around her, including, surprisingly, Elaine Strickland, who despite never wondering much about during the movie, I enjoyed being included in the book. There’s a deeper exploration into pretty much everyone’s backstories, and more prominent character development. It’s excellent as a standalone piece, and supplementary to readers who have seen the movie. There’s also some alternative takes on certain scenes, which I don’t necessarily like better or worse than the choices made in the movie, but it makes for an interesting read. 

The book explores themes of alienation and being othered, with a main cast that breaks the stereotype of straight white fully-abled male. Elisa is a mute woman, Zelda, a black woman, and Giles a gay man. With the political climate of the 1950′s, all of them are outsiders and all of them find solidarity in each other, despite their unique struggles, and also with the creature.

The only thing I didn’t quite like was the portrayal of the creature. I think greater efforts were put into making him more godlike and otherworldly, but also, simultaneously, he comes off as much more like a wild animal in the book, and the latter came off as strange to me, and not in the way I like it. Overall, even if the movie didn’t exist and I only read this, I’d still think it was a really good story.

To Be Taught, If Fortunate - Becky Chambers

If I depended on the synopsis on the back of the book to decide whether or not I wanted to read this, I don’t know if I would have bothered. To be honest, I only wanted to read this because Becky Chambers is my current favorite author and all other of her works I’ve read I’ve absolutely adored, so naturally, I wanted to give this one a chance, even if the concept wasn’t as riveting as I would have hoped.

She didn’t disappoint. 

Whereas her other books take place in a vast space civilization where humanity is integrated with aliens and there’s technology beyond our dreams, this book took place in a different creative universe, a little more closer to our timeline. The book is about space exploration for the sake of learning and taking care to be as least intrusive on the explored worlds as possible. It’s a nice break from what I usually see in sci fi, with colonization and owning space and wanting to use knowledge in order to hurt others. It follows a research crew of four, sent to research four planets in a far solar system. There’s a lag in travel time, since FTL travel had not been discovered yet, so a common device is communication with Earth is off by years. Eventually, the crew realizes they have lost contact with Earth and Earth had likely suffered some sort of devastation. It wonders if Earth has forgotten them or if it’s even worth it to return since they might be the last astronauts of their time. 

The worlds they visit and research are unique and vivid and fill me with wonder. They’re realistic to the point where I found myself questioning if the book was prophetic. Chambers makes effort to incorporate science into her novels, but in a way that does not estrange a reader like me who only has a basic knowledge in science. It’s one of the things I find most attractive about her work, because it has this added realism and this feeling of “wow, this really could happen” and yet remains easy to follow. 

I found the crew to be likeable and diverse. Three of them are in a relationship with each other, and while polyamory isn’t usually an interest of mine, it’s in the background as well as it’s never used as a point to cause drama. It’s a healthy functional relationship. Also, one of the crew is a trans man and another is asexual, both details that exist within a single line, but yet important to be included to flesh out the characters. 

What I didn’t like was the almost rush to the end of the book. It’s a short book, roughly 100 pages, but it seems to me as if it reaches it’s climax and then the book just ends and it kind of feels like it’s still in the middle of things. I’ve had time to think about it, though, and I’ve considered that maybe anything else written would have been redundant or just filler and therefore not needed. So in that case, that’s fair. It still felt a little abrupt to me, but that’s what fic is for. 

Overall, if you haven’t read anything by Becky Chambers you need to change that immediately. Please don’t leave me alone and fanning over this incredible author!!

All Systems Red - Martha Wells

This was another short one, and in fact, I read it entirely in one sitting. The concept of the book was really intriguing, and actually I selected it because I liked the opening line so much. I have a lot of feelings about AI and robots, so this was a naturally alluring story to me. Mixed with the fact that the beefed out security robot, who calls themselves “Murderbot”,  was absolutely obsessed with soap opera tv just absolutely gets me!

The story is told through Murderbot’s perspective, who is assigned to guard a research team. They had recently hacked their government module, which now allows them full autonomy and no longer having to obey orders from their assigned humans. It’s interesting to see Murderbot actively choose to help the humans. Also, needing to maintain an illusion that they aren’t unshackled, since what they did was forbidden. 

The research team is full of interesting characters, who I find tragically under explored. The only couple in the story is wlw, which I vastly appreciated, along with they obviously cared and loved each other and their relationship was not used for drama purposes. In favor of the lack of development with the cast of characters, since the narrator is Murderbot and part of Murderbot’s personality is they are actively trying not to care about these humans, it does make sense. Still, I would have loved to see more of the crew and more development between Murderbot and them. 

I like the dark lore that is hinted behind Murderbot’s existence. There’s organic counterparts to their machine made from cloned humans. It’s creepy and morbid, but a lot is with the lore of the universe that the story takes place in. There’s hints towards a heavy capitalist society in space where the humans and Murderbot came from, where the right price will get you anything, regardless of morals. The overall tone of the story is very quirky, but it needs to be to offset just how dark everything that happens actually is. The book explores the concept of corporate greed, from the existence of Murderbot to the deaths that come to humans on the planet the crew is studying.

This book was deeply fascinating, but I didn’t love the way it was written. I love every concept and choice made, but I didn’t love the execution. It left me wanting without satisfaction. It’s not a bad book and I still over all enjoyed it. It is part of a series, which I did not realize at the time of reading it, but the ending leaves room for more to be written, so maybe in the following books there will be the development I desired. However, the ending of the book leaves it apparent that Murderbot will not be interacting with the same characters of the first, but that is just an assumption and I could be wrong. I’m not sure yet if I will read more in the series but I’m not entirely opposed to it.

All the Birds in the Sky - Charlie Jane Anders

This is another one that I definitely would not have read if I had to choose based on the synopsis alone. The synopsis made it sound so run-of-the-mill star-crossed-lovers, which, hey, maybe that actually helps sell the book because its a pretty well loved trope, but for me it was off-putting, as well as isn’t fair to what the book actually turned out to be. But that’s what reviews are for, and I found this book from some sort of list, I think it was best sci-fi books written by women.

The general idea of the book is a witch and a techie fall in love while the world is falling apart due to a conflict between magic and technology. The book is lauded for bending genre and honestly, it fucking has. It’s as equally a sci-fi novel as it is a fantasy novel. There’s advanced technology, such as robots, two second time machines, rocket ships, and ultimately, a portal leading to a different universe in hopes of escaping the destruction of earth. On the magic side, there’s a connection to nature, rules that have to be abided, quirky witches and magicians and mystique. Both Laurence and Patricia are outsiders that have seemingly found these secret niches in the world that becomes their own.

Both plots are interesting in their own, and could possibly exist as two separate books, but what ties the entire story together is the connection Laurence and Patricia have, and their ultimate romance.

The romance is a wonderful slow burn, from childhood friends, to adult friends to lovers. By the time Patricia and Laurence finally get together, you really fucking want them to. They weave in and out of each other’s lives throughout their own personal plots. There’s tensions and there’s release. And most importantly, they have lives outside of each other. Their romance compliments the story, rather than the story being entirely about romance. 

Similar to the former review, there’s a lot of quirkiness in the story, that ultimately offsets how dark the story can be. The story doesn’t shy away from complicated relationships with parents and siblings and friends and other people, people of mixed ages and backgrounds. It explores abuse, bullying, natural disaster and loss. The story would have been miserable and a drag to read without the whimsical qualities of it. Plus it’s a fantasy/sci-fi, so it should have some quirkiness to it! And it made for a very enjoyable read!

My criticism for this one is, yet again, the ending. The conflict resolves and the story comes to an end. In favor of how it was written, the way things resolve, I believe the world is about to go through a grand change. While the story is quirky, I think it would have been too corny to have had a glittery magical wave drag across the land, altering the world as it went. So, it’s fair, I guess, that the author chose to end it where she did. Still, it left me craving more. Maybe because the story was so good and I wasn’t yet ready to let it go.

Also, as a side note, the author is a trans woman. So if you’re looking for books written by trans authors to support, put this at the top of your list.

I’ve had this blog for 12 years now? maybe idk. i’m 28 (tomorrow) currently working part time from home. i’m a content creator/writer/marketing person for a small company and i get way too obsessed with things.

i used to post con stuff for supernatural but i fell out of that fandom around season 12.

right now i’m riding that star wars train but i love all things marvel and i just watched the old guard yesterday so there’s that. honestly there is just too much stuff that i like to list them all but i tag everything so it’s easy to blacklist what you don’t like. or unfollow, you do you boo.

i’m always down to talk about whatever, i used to call people muffins as a term of endearment, and i have no idea how this hellsite works anymore.

i write occasionally, mostly stucky but i’ve written some finnpoe and i’m working on some star wars rebels stuff now.
