This is the third year in a row Iā€™m doing this tag and two years ago my blog was a tiny baby blog and now itā€™s grown so much (Iā€™m getting sentimental). Iā€™m so grateful for how far Iā€™ve come and Iā€™m so grateful that you all support me and my content, thank you!
Now that Iā€™ve gotten the cheesy stuff out of the way, letā€™s get into the tag. Itā€™s almost halfway through 2018, so itā€™s the perfect time to look back at what Iā€™ve read in the past six months. Iā€™ve read about 60 books (Iā€™m writing this in advance so I canā€™t go any more specific than that but check my goodreads if you want more details), and loved the large majority of them! Iā€™ve discovered some new favourites and overall had a great time reading!
I was tagged by the lovely Ruby, go check out her blog here!
Tumblr media
The best book youā€™ve read so far in 2017
Iā€™ve had added only two books to my ā€œfavoritesā€ shelf, but I always struggle with picking my favorites. I always love books a lot but never so much that it really sticks out from the other books I loved. Anyway, Iā€™m going to go withā€¦ I CANā€™T CHOOSE. Iā€™m just gonna pick two because they were both personally really important to me and also really fun!
Ā  Your favourite sequel of the year
Obsidio!! Okay, it wasnā€™t perfect but I love that series with all my heart (seriously, it broke it so many times, I think it just tricked me into thinking I love it). The new characters were a bit meh but I liked them nonetheless and *screams ā€œKadyā€ into empty space*. I just have so many feelings for this series, and Obsidio was a pretty darn good conclusion!
A new release that you havenā€™t read but really want to
Letā€™s Talk About Love has been on my TBR since I first heard about it and I just need to read it. I just need to get my act together and buy myself a copy of that pretty thing and read it. It has an ACE POC MC (Iā€™m pretty sure sheā€™s also biromantic)!!!
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year
So last year my most anticipated release for this question was All The Crooked Saints and I still havenā€™t read it oops. Letā€™s hope itā€™s different this time. Iā€™m just gonna make a little list because I honestly have too many to just pick one!
First and foremost: The Ladyā€™s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee- If I die before I read this book, someone better go to my grave and read it to my dead body because there ainā€™t no way Iā€™m missing out on this book. It has the epic wonderful aro-ace Felicity as main character and my babies Monty and Percy better be in there. ALSO: SCIENCE GIRL GANGS, HELL YES.
others: Vengeful by V.E. Schwab (I still havenā€™t read the first book but shhhh I will), Summer Bird Blue by Akemi Dawn Bowman, Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor.
Ā  Your biggest disappointment
I canā€™t really think of any one book that stood out, but perhaps The Opposite of Loneliness because I thought it was just very boring. I more often than not do not finish books I donā€™t enjoy so if I picked from those itā€™d beĀ Stalking Jack the Ripper though I only read about a quarter of that. (rant review here)
Biggest surprise of the year
My biggest surprise was probably Far From The Tree by Robin Benway because I went in with no expectations whatsoever and ended up absolutely adoring it!
Favourite new to you or debut author
Ashley Herring Blake (new to me) and Laura Steven (debut)! Iā€™ve read ARCs of both of their 2018 releases and now I definitely need to try and read everything theyā€™ve written or will write!
Ā  Your new fictional crush
I donā€™t do crushes.
New favourite character
Felicity Montague from The Gentlemenā€™s Guide to Vice and Virtue!!! I just relate and look up to her so much!
A book that made you cry
I donā€™t remember if I read anything that made me really cry, only books that made me cry because I was laughing so hard (The Gentlemenā€™s Guide) or because they were hurtfulā€¦
A book that made you happy
Iā€™m really trying not to mention The Gentlemenā€™s Guide to Vice and Virtue for every question so letā€™s go with something else. Not Your Sidekick by C.B. Lee and the sequel Not Your Villain both made me really happy! Theyā€™re just so sweet and uncomplicated without being boring at all!
Ā  Your favourite book to movie adaptation that youā€™ve seen this year
I saw Love, Simon a few weeks ago and loved it!! (except the ending)
Favourite book post youā€™ve done this year
The most popular post Iā€™ve done in the past 6 months was this oneĀ which is about ARCs and alternatives to Netgalley, and as much as I enjoyed doing the series on ARCs with a focus on international reviewers, those are not my favourite posts! My favourite is definitely my post about Simon Spier and the rise of LGBT+ stories. I absolutely adored the response it got and I got to interact with a lot of lovely people and hear their stories and it was wonderful! Iā€™ve been wanting to do more similar posts but I lack the inspiration.
The most beautiful book youā€™ve bought/received this year
I actually havenā€™t bought that many physical books (I read a lot of ebooks and audiobooks) lately but here are some of my highlights:
Ā  What are some books you need to read by the end of the year
My TBR is very plain right now, Iā€™ve been ignoring it for a while and barely ever add books to it but Iā€™d like to read Queens of Geek and Letā€™s Talk About Love (and all the before-mentioned books Iā€™m anticipating of course).
Tumblr media
Ā  Did you do this tag? What was your favourite read of 2018 so far? Do you agree with any of my choices?Ā Do you have a favourite post youā€™ve written this year? Let me know! Iā€™d love to read it (if I havenā€™t already)

Occasionally, I go through my Goodreads shelves to clean or organize them. Sometimes it doesnā€™t help when Iā€™m adding 5+ books a week sometimes. Here are the books Iā€™ve most recently added to my ā€œto-readā€ shelf!
Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.
The topic itself isnā€™t restricted to certain genres, and while I do read mostly YA, other genres do pique my interest. My Goodreads ā€œto-readā€ shelf currently has 189 books on it. *dies* Iā€™ll never be able to read all the books, but God willing, I still have a lot of years left in me to try. šŸ˜›
I knowĀ thereā€™s a huge push for diversity and accurate representation in YA publishing, and I hope to do my fellow book lovers justice by adding good books to my TBR.Ā Letā€™s Talk About Love not only features an African-American on the cover, but also features an asexual (ace) character. I hope itā€™s as wonderful as the hype surrounding it is.Ā Letā€™s Talk About Love is scheduled to release January 23, 2018! I hope the cover doesnā€™t change!
Daughter of the Siren Queen is the sequel toĀ Daughter of the Pirate King. I recently finished the first book and thoroughly enjoyed it. I believe this series will only be a duology, and the final book is set to release on February 27, 2018.
The Queen and the Cure is the second book inĀ The Bird and the Sword Chronicles. I finished reading the first book a few days ago and liked it very much, but not as much as I thought I would. However, it doesnā€™t deter me from reading the sequel.Ā The Queen and the Cure released not too long ago onĀ May 1, 2017.
There are 2 books I recently added to my TBR that donā€™t have coversā€¦yet!Ā Queens of Innis Fear by Tessa Gratton andĀ I Really Didnā€™t Think This Through by Beth Evans, both set to release next year. IĀ love the play on words with Grattonā€™s book, which makes me think of the lovely Yeats poem,Ā LakeĀ Isle of Innisfree. Hereā€™s the synopsis:
Three sisters born under different stars, sharing the same tragic ancestry and ambitious destiny, vie with each other and with the kings who will be their allies, enemies, and pawns, in a dangerous, sexy, deadly game for power, ignited by the madness of a declining king and the reappearance of a bastard soldier who wants to tear it all down.
A feminist, multicultural epic fantasy with the operatic feeling of GAME OF THRONES, inspired by the authorā€™s conflicted relationship with KING LEAR and her desire to confront head-on provocative questions about birthright, gender, faith, and the complicated bonds of family.
Evansā€™ book doesnā€™t have a synopsis yet, but I can only imagine the book will comprise of her comics, which highlight anxiety, OCD, and depression.
Iā€™ve yet to finish Kristin Cashoreā€™s fantasy series which begins withĀ Graceling and ends withĀ Bitterblue. I readĀ Fire and wasnā€™t impressed so I pushedĀ Bitterblue off to the side.Ā Jane, Unlimited released this year in September.
Marissa Meyer is one of those author bandwagons Iā€™ve jumped on. I definitely enjoyedĀ The Lunar Chronicles and while Iā€™ve yet to readĀ Heartless,Ā Renegades intrigues me far more. The cover was revealed a few weeks ago and Iā€™m so in love with it. It looks so futuristic and reminds me of a game.Ā Renegades releases onĀ November 7, 2017.
Victoria: Portrait of a Queen by Catherine Reef is an illustrated biography about Queen Victoria, a woman who happens to be one of my favorite British monarchs. Iā€™ve read a variety of biographies about this queen, who ascended the throne at the age of 18 and reigned for over 60 years. Iā€™m excited to see the illustrations in this book as written biographies contain only a handful of pictures.Ā Victoria: Portrait of a Queen is set to release onĀ November 7, 2017.
Iā€™m definitely excited for this YA sci-fi with an Asian character on the cover with an Asian setting written by an Asian author, Cindy Pon! šŸ˜® It soundsĀ awesome. My words wonā€™t do it justice. Hereā€™s the synopsis:
From critically acclaimed author Cindy Pon comes an edge-of-your-seat sci-fi thriller, set in a near-future Taipei plagued by pollution, about a group of teens who risk everything to save their city.
Jason Zhou survives in a divided society where the elite use their wealth to buy longer lives. The rich wear special suits, protecting them from the pollution and viruses that plague the city, while those without suffer illness and early deaths. Frustrated by his cityā€™s corruption and still grieving the loss of his mother who died as a result of it, Zhou is determined to change things, no matter the cost.
With the help of his friends, Zhou infiltrates the lives of the wealthy in hopes of destroying the international Jin Corporation from within. Jin Corp not only manufactures the special suits the rich rely on, but they may also be manufacturing the pollution that makes them necessary.
Yet the deeper Zhou delves into this new world of excess and wealth, the more muddled his plans become. And against his better judgment, Zhou finds himself falling for Daiyu, the daughter of Jin Corpā€™s CEO. Can Zhou save his city without compromising who he is, or destroying his own heart?
It sounds like a K-drama in the making, and Iā€™m not complaining! šŸ˜›Ā Want is scheduled to release onĀ June 13, 2017.
Last but certainly not least,Ā Words in Deep Blue by Cath Crowley releases on June 6 (next week!). It sounds incredibly adorable and endearing with some feels thrown in there. I should prepare myself. It also centers around a bookshop, and hello, that sounds amazing!
Do we share any similar books? Feel free to leave your TTT in the comments, and Iā€™ll be sure to check it out! šŸ™‚
