'Go to the Golden House,' the quest read.
It had just been another regular day for Childe. Wake up, do his morning chores, then do his regular, messily scheduled streaming.
And, as per usual, he had been streaming Genshin Impact, a well known game in the streaming community.
"The Golden House? Uh, okay then..."
He stole a glance at his chat, who were telling each other to shut up, while some only asked what would happen in confusion. Spoilers were probably deleted by his mods.
"Chat, you're scaring me, chat. What the hell is going to happen? No, no, don't tell me, I don't think I want to know yet."
Something in his head screamd at him, as a cutscene played. His chosen traveller looked around the Golden House before stepping closer to the Exurvia of the former Geo Archon.
And then, in stepped familiar h/c hair, their e/c eyes devoid of light despite the golden mora shining within the Golden House.
"Hey! The lil skrunkly!" He whispered, low enough to not desturb the cutscene.
They conversed for a bit, before the cutscene ended and a battle began.
"Surreder is a valid option, I promise I'll be gentle."
Childe swallowed his saliva, laughing quietly to himself.
"Oh I am going to have fun. Maybe."
âđ ŕż
The fight ended, and Childe was shaking in his seat. He had barely finished phase 3, getting disracted many times.
Another cutscene played, revealing a tired, worn out traveller. But Y/n was no better, not even on his level.
Standing across the traveller, now out of their Foul Legacy form, was same old Y/n, shaking in their place as scratches and bruises littered their skin.
"Hah, you've bested me. How... intriguing. You truely are...as strong as they say."
Childe, having a chill run up his spine, stared intelty at his screen, deathly quiet.
"La Signora has even praised you for your strength, even if she had not faught you herself, yet. Hah, to get a Harbinger's attention and praise... You sure are a special one, huh?"
âđ ŕż
Having none of their energy remaining, Y/n collapsed to the floor, on their knees. They could see the traveller hesitate to approach them, but they spoke before he could move.
"Well? What are you waiting for? I may have overused Foul Legacy, and it wont be too long."
They spared a glance at the traveller, and even in their weakest moment, a competetive and mischievous glint shone in their once dull eyes.
"Go on. Aren't you going to kill me?"
The traveller's breath hitched, before they chuckled once again.
"Haha, only joking... Unless you're up to it, of course. I'm not quite a fan of dying to Foul Legacy, but after a fight with the oh so great traveller? It was a fight worth dying for, I guess."
Coughing, blood trickled down their chin, and they wiped it off with the back of their hand.
"May I be able to hope to see you again? To have another battle? Perhaps in the far future, perhaps never again at all..."
Taking a step forward, the traveller ceased his motion as the Harbinger raised a hand.
"No need. Whatever healing you might try to do would not work. Foul Legacy takes my energy, decreasing my life span. Perhaps I wasn't meant to live long, perhaps my only purpose was to serve the Tsaritsa."
A chuckle, breathy and tired and solemn and...happy.
Happy to have someone to pass one last message for them.
"Before you leave," they spoke. "You'll probably be able to find one or two of the Harbingers here. One of them would be summoning a god banished to the depths below. You cannot stop them. Or maybe you can. But, before you leave."
They looked up, and despite the scratches and blood on their face, their half lidded eyes shined a thousand times brighter than all the mora in the Golden House.
"My siblings... My mother, my father... Everyone..."
They smiled, brighter than their eyes. It was soft and kind and solemn and genuine and sad.
A million words spoke through that smile. A million messages, a million apologies, a million grateful thank yous. Directed to their family, their parents, their siblings.
A million farewells. Directed to everyone.
Directed to the traveller. To Childe.
"Give them one last goodbye for me, will you? A hug, for everyone. A kiss on the cheek, for mum and dad."
A smile, solemn and bright. But never remorseful, never faux.
"Tell Teucer I'm sorry."
Falling to their side, they collapsed on the ground with a thud, and the Golden House was deathly quiet.
âđ ŕż
Childe stared at the screen. Eyes wide, mouth agape. If you looked close enough, you could see his shaking form as the cutscene ended.
Another quest popped up.
'Bid Y/n L/n a final goodbye.'
And he wailed in his seat.
Tears streamed down his cheeks, and he made it seem more dramatic to make people assume he wasn't really badly affected by their death.
"Iâ whatâ NO! My skrunkly! My little meow meow!"
He moved his character to stand in front of Y/n, an interact button popping up.
'Bid your farewells.'
He did so, seeing his character change to the traveller, who kneeled down beside Y/n. Paimon floated down to the ground, placing a hand on their head.
"...We promise you, Y/n. Your family will be alright."
Taking a flower, a Cecilia from Mondstadt, the traveller gingerly placed it atop their head.
"...We'll be going now, Y/n." He said, and stood up.
Childe had been quiet the whole time, and he could see his chat going wild on the corner of his eyes, all screaming 'NO' or 'o7' or anything alike.
"What the fuck!?" He exclaimed, not touching the game. Rolling his chair backwards a bit, he turned his head to chat, hands intertwined in front of his face, covering his mouth.
He wiped his teary eyes and wet cheeks, trying to find his voice.
"That was too early! I thought I could ignore the death flags until further!!" He exclaimed, staring directly at his face cam. Running a hand through his hair, he dramatically slouched on his chair, groaning loudly.
"Nooo! I would have protected them!"
Suddenly springing up from his seat, he wailed even louder.
"THEIR FAMILY!! THEY'RE GOING TO BE FUCKING DEVASTATED! Andâ andâ their siblings! TEUCER!" He exclaimed.
"I'm sueing Mihoyo Hoyoverse what the fuck."

The Winchesters Season 1 Episode 2: Teach Your Children Well
I had to be a good friend last night which meant putting off The Winchesters until this morning, but seriously, everyone refusing to watch it, is MISSING OUT!
SPOILERS AHEAD
Characters
ADA
This is the character I didn't know I needed in the mothership and I'm so glad we have her now.I absolutely adore her. I love a mystic anyway, so she was already on good ground but damn. I love that she is able to get her point across without being agressive about it. Her talk with Millie was such a good moment. The Jasmine vine thing made my heart clench a little. The shadow writing was cool as hell.My only complaint is that there wasn't more of her. I need a whole Ada backstory plotline.
MILLIE
Millie is a hardass, but with good reason. To play devil's advocate, as a mom, I 100% get where she is coming from with John. It's not that she doesn't believe in him, she just doesn't want to lose her son. She already lost her husband ( and btw she's not gonna heal instantly now that she knows Henry didn't just walk out on them. Years of bitter resentment don't wash away over night). Parents make mistakes but a good parent knows when to apologize for them and explain themselves, and Millie is a damn good parent who loves her son(and knows how to tell him so[meaning the Winchester Emotional Constipation comes from John]) I REALLY wish she was around for Sam and DeanI and I am so not looking forward to whatever the hell is going to happen to her.
*also, fuck Abaddon for taking Henry away from them. I know the whole " if she hadn't AB&C wouldn't have happened but still.
LATA
She is so smart. I love that the group has an eager bookworm. I feel bad for her when it comes to her friends both having such...strong...personalities, while she is a pacifist. It seems to me that she often gets caught in the middle of their nonsense and that is never a fun place to be. But she remains loyal and patient and I think that brings such a nice balance to the group. Proud of her for sticking to her guns when Mary shut her down.
CARLOS
Carlos is love, Carlos is life and if they harm one glorious hair on that precious baby's head I will riot. I feel like it's too soon to call Carlos my favorite character, but he is definitely the most relatable to me, I don't know why (says the bisexual latina with a love of all things music) he just is. He has his fun goofy streak but knows when to keep it serious. I love a character who is not afraid to be 100% themselves despite time and environment. He says what is on his mind. He talks to each person in a different manner acording to their personality. He loves what he loves and will defend his beliefs (I also would have given Mary the silent treatment, Cabaret is a fucking masterpiece). And I really do love the free love hippie vibes. I know there was some discourse last week about making the Latin/Bisexual character a promiscuous stereotype, and look, I get it. I do. I think I have quite a good grasp on how both of those demographics have been presented in media and how disappointing it can be. HOWEVER, knowing what I know about the time setting AND how storytelling works, I'm not personally upset by it.
It's the 70s. If you have ever sat down with someone who was young around that time and talked to them about the culture, you will know there is no more explanation needed than that. If you dont have acces to a person then I suggest looking into any media or major events from that time to know what that means
One of them had to be a slutty character. If you look at television and movies (even books) where there is a core group of teens/adults ( young or old) there is always a character who is more promiscuous and/or wild than the others. It's just a basic archetype.
Now, does it suck that it had to be the Latin bisexual? Yeah. Yeah it does. But it wasn't going to be Mary or John, as that would have messed up the story and upset fans quite a bit. It sure as hell wasn't going to be Lata, that doesn't fit her character nor does it fit Ada. That leaves Carlos. I get why people are upset, I'm not going to sit here and say you shouldn't be, but again, me, personally, I'm okay with it. That's that.
MARY
She is definitely her sons' mother. I see all the Dean-coding for sure, but I appreciate the bits of her I see in Sam( which we know Sam learned from Dean so, still heavy Dean-coding.) I still very much get Mary Winchester from her. Stubborn, pushy, badass, acting without thinking, know it all, caring about others, but not to the point it gets in the way of her goal.. The works. I still have my mixed feeling on Mary. I like her, but I resent her. I love that.
JOHN
John JohnJohnnyJohn John. What to say about Sa....I mean John Winchester. Look, I'm not saying he's a bad guy yet. He's not. He's young and bullheaded, but he seems nice enough. I really do see a lot of him in Sam ( mostly the back and forth about the self conciousness and the desprate need for approval without admitting he wants it) , which isn't a bad thing it's just....I see it, okay? I see the John Winchester I know and loathe. And I don't think it's just because of previous bias. It could be but...it's the little things. The way he treated his mother in the beginning, running head first into danger without thinking about the consequences for the people around him, the cockiness. I just can't unsee it. I'm trying, but it's hard, okay?
Story
I really enjoyed this episode. It had both MOW feels while also moving the story along. Those were always some of the best episodes of SPN. I wasn't always of a fan of plain ol' MOWs that had nothing to really move the plot forward, but when they balanced plot and monsters it was always a good time. La Tunda was a good monster (story wise). It gave Latika a chance to flex her contributions to the group with knowledge and I like that the whole "not a shapeshifter" point was there to humble Mary a bit. And the abusive parent story. *chef's kiss*. The show has so far been about two characters finding missing parents and healing from childhood trauma put on them because of those parents. I could go into more detail but it would inevitably lead down a personal patb I don't want to take, but I got a "Face that trauma head on and kill it before it kills you so that you can move on with you journey" vibe. You know? I liked that they used Ada as someone who knew Henry for a catalyst for Millie to start her healing process. Her subtle way of telling Millie that Henry put that vine there to protect them while he was gone was a nice moment. I feel like Ada knows more about the MOL than she lets on, mostly by the way she seems to feel incredibly comfortable with the workings of the chapter house (where they keep their shit for spell casting and such). Seriously cannot wait to know more about her. The moment in the hotel before the core group goes to the comune is great. It added a nice free moment for this group of troubled young folk. The zombie scene was fun and it showed where everyones strengths lie and I'm glad it gave a bit more insight to the dynamic between Carlos and Lata. (Lata trying to put the Zombies it the box was kind a funny to me idk why) Not much on the Akrida but there's still a whole season. That end though! I'm in Camp Rowena with everyone else. It's possible that it's another witch, but I don't think so. The hell hounds were a bit concerning (unless its it's a time traveling Rowena who is already queen of Hell even though it doesn't need to be because she centuries old) because the Gates are still closed but like I said, whole season ahead.
Production
It was great. The monster effects were miles above episode one with the Loup-garou ( a rugaru varient apparently) and honestly I saw no major issuse. The only thing I saw was a slight inconsistency with Mary's hair style shot to shot but that's just being nitpicky. ( Spn had whole ass filming equipment and crew members in shot before so...)
Acting
Already noticing improvements in chemistry. The cast is doing a great job.
Final thoughts
It's safe to say I'm already hooked. This felt like an episode of SPN just with different characters. With the improvements I've seen already from the pilot to episode two, I have hopes that it will only get better from here. It feels so good to have this universe back. Solid 8/10
Will we learn more about the Akrida?
Will Ada get the screen time she deserves?
Who the hell was the hooded figure?
For the love of Chuck and all that is unholy, will someone please address the RDP ( random diner patron) from In The Beginning that I know is most likely just a continuity error but I desperately don't want it to be and its been bothering me for almost an entire DECADE?!?!?!?!

Hello âtis I Echo and I regret to inform I have been locked out my old acc 𼲠Still that wonât stop me because I was thinking about making a Dream smp TBHK AU.
đŤMentions of ghost shenanigans and killing. Also tbhk spoilers)đŤ
-Brief plot for those who donât know the story of this anime. Yashiro Nene attends Kamone Highschool, a school known for itâs interesting rumors of ghosts, apparitions, and of course the 7 wonders of the school. One particular wonder, Hanako-San of the Toilet, catches Yashiroâs attention. If you summon Hanako she is said to grant any wish you want. Yashiro goes to summon Hanako to ask her to grant a wish of finding love but she is met with shock when Hanako turns out to be a boy. Through some odd events Yashiro gets put under a cursed that leaves her spiritually bound to Hanako. The two become partners with their goal to take down evil spirits in the school to keep the peace between humans and apparitions.
-Now here the cast list:
-Yashiro: Reader
-Hanako: Tommy
-Kou: Ranboo
-Mistuba: Tubbo
-Tsukasa: Wilbur
-Teru: Techno
There are more characters but Iâm having trouble assigning characters to roles.
Also saying this now even though the anime has romantic stuff between Yashiro and Hanako my AU will not have that. Everything here is platonic. Just a couples homies being homies.
-Reader is Yashiro because protag moment. Unlike in the original story where Yashiro wishes for love, Reader wishes to find friends who wonât abandon them. Iâm the past theyâve made friends but they either all left them behind or werenât really their friends and were fake.
-Tommy is Hanako because they are both chaotic and rude little shits. Tommy at first really doesnât think that much of Reader, they are only keeping them safe to help take care of the other apparitions. As time goes on though, they grow on each other and become best friends (4lifers đ) Tommy is honestly very happy to have someone by his side after being alone for so long. The feeling of having someone who says they will stay by their side makes him feel nostalgicâŚ
-Ranboo is Kou because yes! Ranboo comes from a clan of powerful exorcists. His adoptive father, Philza Minecraft, and older brother, Techno, being huge role modules for him. Techno instructed Ranboo to find and eliminate the 7th wonder, Tommy the bathroom ghost. Tommy needs to be exorcised because he was said to have killed someone close to him when he was aliveâŚRanboo attempts to fight Tommy but looses. Ranboo ends up hanging around Tommy after the fight trying to see if he would actually try to do anything evil. He is shocked to find that while this ghost child is annoying he isnât really evil. He may have done things in the past but he seems to genuinely care about reader and eventually him too and the three become friends. Sure hope Techno doesnât find out ahahaha.
-Tubbo is Mitsuba because yep. Tubbo was an outcast in his class with the closest thing to a friend he had being Ranboo but even then they werenât that close. Tubbo sadly died after being hit by a truck. After some time his spirit finds it way back to the school and the first person he sees is Ranboo. Tubbo is often very sarcastic and can be a bit rude (a bit rude is an understatement), which is why Ranboo didnât even recognize Tubbo at first. The Tubbo he knew was quiet and soft spoken. Ranboo tries to help Tubbo find peace in the afterlife, showing him around the school and finding some old stuff that used to belong to him. Ranboo feels like he and Tubbo are really starting to get to know each other well but that sadly doesnât last because ofâŚ
-Wilbur is Tsukasa because Wilbur is too good at filling in that shit brother role in rp. Tommy and Wilbur were the closest of brothers out there but due to somethingâŚTommy ended up killing Wilbur. Wilbur haunts the school and makes it his goal to cause as much chaos as possible. One of the ways he did this was by destroying what remained of Tubboâs spirit. He took a small portion of it and used it to bring Tubbo back after basically killing him. Tubbo lost all his memories of Ranboo and became a 7th mystery like Hanako. What Wilburâs final goal in everything is unclear but he is a threat that should be taken down.
I know I didnât write a section on Techno or Phil and Iâm sorry. I am tired but I hope you enjoyed this Au thing. If anyone wants to add onto this or write about it feel free to.
Okay I can't really add to this but- I can vibe with it

Friends with Kids.
A/NÂ I re-watched Friends with Kids for the firs time in years and I came up with this, if you, like me, love rom-coms I highly recommend it, therefore if you don't want spoilers for the movie, go watch it and then come back here to read this! For the sake of the story there might be some OOC moments, don't kill me. Also there are many time-jumps so I hope itâs not too confusing. English is not my first language so bear with me, I try my best, I'm still working on it. I enjoyed writing this so much! I started last month and it was a blast so hopefully you enjoyed it as well, if you did, let me know! Thank you for reading this super long oneshot. P.S. This is the first work of the Movie AU series that I've been planning (if you pay close attention, without intending to I wrote a couple clues about others stories I'm working on (Movie AU's as well) đ
P.S. 2 You should go and check this post and this post and help if you can â¤
ALSO this is another entry for my @cmbingoâ card, the square is Friends to Lovers.
Summary:Â After seeing all of their friends having kids, Penelope and Luke decide that since none of them seem to have found their person, they agree to have a child of their own. Having a kid with your best friend can't be that bad, right? (Movie AU: Friends with Kids)
Pairing: Penelope Garcia x Luke Alvez (with a little bit of Jemily đ¤)
Warnings: Cursing, mentions of sex, bad jokes, SLOWBURN, some angst I guess, some grammar mistakes.
Word count: 15410 (yâall told me to post it as a one instalment lmao đ¤Żđ¤Żđ¤Ż)
Masterlist (You can also find this and other fanfics in my AO3 acc )
Luke didnât need to look up to know that Penelope was finally down in the lobby, the sound of her high heels gave it away, he pocketed his phone and got up, ready to go and meet their friends.
âHello chicaâ He kissed her cheek and she returned the gesture.
âHi newbie, Iâm sorry itâs so late, I got caught up at work, letâs goâ
âAfter youâ Once they were outside their apartment building, they called a cab, eager to get to the restaurant and catch up with their friends.
âHow was work?â Penelope asked him as she put on lipstick.
Luke shrugged âSame as usual, nothing exciting happens, what about you?â
âTerrible day, I canât wait to drink a couple glasses of wineâ Luke snorted and raised an eyebrow âOr fiveâ
âItâs Friday so Iâm also thinking about getting a little tipsyâ She placed her lipstick in her purse and rested her hands in her lap with a smile on her face.
âItâs been so long since the eight of us have gone out to dinner, I miss everyoneâ
âI know, I donât think Iâll recognize their faces anymoreâ Penelope rolled her eyes instead of going along with it.
They remained in a comfortable silence the rest of the time, saving everything else they had to say until they were with the rest. Penelope and Luke saw each other much more often than the others, mostly because they lived in the same building, just an elevator ride apart, Penelopeâs place was on the third floor while Lukeâs was on the seventh. Another reason as to why they didnât see each other that much was because half of the gang, Matt, Kristy, Derek and Savannah were now parents and they didnât have as much free time time as before.
Once in the restaurant, Penelope walked as quickly as she could, Luke following close behind careful to act if she tripped or something. Penelopeâs smile fell just a little when she only saw Emily and JJ sitting at the table.
âHey, you guys are hereâ Emily and JJ quickly rushed to them, and after a round of greetings and hugs, the four sat down.
âWhere's the rest of the gang?â Luke asked, looking around to see if they were by the bar or coming from the bathroom.
âYeah, we canât be the awesome eight when there are only four of us hereâ Penelope stated as she nicely signaled the waiter to come over.
Emily bit her lip and looked at JJ âThey called to inform us they canât make it tonightâ The blonde woman informed them.
âKristyâs not feeling well and Matt has to be there to take care of the kids and Derek and Savannah couldnât find a sitterâ Emily added carefully watching Penelope, they all knew she had been looking forward to this dinner for a few weeks now.
âOhâ Penelope forced a smile âItâs ok, I get it, things happenâ Under the table, Luke took her hand and squeezed it, she looked at him and smiled a little less forced this time.
âWeâll be the fabulous four tonightâ JJ raised her glass and Penelope remembered she hadnât seen them in a few months so it was still exciting getting the chance to see them.
âIâll drink to thatâ They all proceeded to order their drinks and dinner, ready to make the most of the evening.
They spent the next hour and a half talking about how life was, JJ and Emily told them about the trip they made to Italy to celebrate their three years of marriage, Penelope told them a funny story about a blind date gone wrong, Luke shared he was getting promoted at work, overall life was good for all of them and it made the evening much more pleasant even though four of their best friends werenât there.
âThereâs this guy at work who I think would be great for youâ JJ commented while eating her dessert.
âI donât know if I should trust you to set me up anymore, last time was horribleâ Penelope replied remembering the last date she had with one of JJâs prospects for her.
âNo, this time itâll be better, I promiseâÂ
âI think youâd like this guy, Penâ Emily said while sipping on her glass of wine.
Luke nudged her with his elbow âCome on, chica, let JJ set you up, it canât be worse than the time the guy bursted into tears when you told him you were a Libraâ
They all laughed, followed by a loud sigh from Penelope âGod, I missed this so much, being with you, laughing at my terrible luck when it comes to datingâ
âI missed it tooâ Emily interjected âBeing together not laughing about your love lifeâ
âI gotta say itâ Luke started âI love our friendsâ kids so much but I miss the times when it was just the eight of us, you know?â
Before JJ or Emily said anything Penelope spoke âI know, I mean Iâm also super grateful those little sweethearts joined the fam but on nights like these I get all nostalgic reminiscing the pre-babies eraâ
JJ and Emily shared a look and both Penelope and Luke knew something was up âWhatâs that?â Luke wondered.
Emily took JJâs hand âWell, one of the news we wanted to share tonight was that JJ and I are adoptingâ Penelope and Luke were wide eyed âWe actually started the process a few months ago but didnât know when we were going to be matched and we didnât expect it to happen soon but weâve been matched, itâs sweet one year old girlâ JJ finished telling their news to their friends.
âHer name is Emerson and sheâs coming home with us in a couple weeksâ Emily waited anxiously to see their reactions.
Penelope was the first one to speak âOh my God, you guys, congratulations, a new addition to the famâ She was genuinely excited with her news and so was Luke.
âItâs great to hear this, youâll be amazing momsâ He turned to Penelope âWeâre getting a new nieceâ
âI know, I know, look about what we said earlier-â JJ cut her off.
âOh, itâs ok, we know kids arenât really your thing so itâs alrightâ Luke was the only one who noticed how Penelopeâs face changed for one second, she quickly smiled again, hoping no one noticed the flash of disappointment in her face at JJâs words.
After saying their goodbyes and promising to reunite once Emerson was settled with JJ and Em, Luke and Penelope took another cab to go back to their apartments. She was silent and Luke didnât know if it was a good idea to ask what was on her mind, he debated whether or not to start a conversation.
Before thinking it twice he started âSo was it true?â Luke questioned and Penelope tilted her head.
âWhat do you mean?â Luke licked his lips.
âWhat JJ said about kids not being your thingâ Penelope sighed and bit her lip, of course Luke had noticed her expression when she heard their friend saying this.
âShe was referring to both of us, Lukeâ She tried to avoid answering his question.
âI know but in my case sheâs wrong I would like kidsâ She looked at him with raised eyebrows and a smirk in her face.
âI didnât know that, newbieâ Luke shrugged âI honestly assumed you were the no kids kind of guyâÂ
âAre you kidding me? My mom would never forgive me if I never gave her grandchildrenâ Penelope laughed imagining Elena, Lukeâs mom, lecturing him to give her grandchildren.
âSo youâre doing it for your mom then?âÂ
âNo, I really wanna be a dad, someday, a tiny human thatâs half me, that would be greatâ She patted his shoulder.
âYouâre right, that would be greatâ He looked at her expectantly âWhat?â
âWhat about you, Penelope? Would you like to have kids?â She pressed her lips together.
âYes, I would love thatâ She admitted after a few seconds of being silent âThe thing is I have no one, sometimes I think I shouldâve said yes to Kevin when he proposed, Iâd have children by nowâ
âYouâre gonna find someoneâ She rolled her eyes âYou will, you are gorgeous and an amazing womanâÂ
âHave you ever wondered if youâve already met your person? You know, the one youâre gonna end up with?â Penelope questioned.
âNo, I havenât met my person, I know that much, but I will and so will you, Pen, youâll seeâ He put his arm around her and she rested her head on his shoulder, starting to feel sleepy, they remained like that until they got home, said goodnight and went to sleep to their apartments.
Almost four months later, Luke and Penelope were hosting a baby shower for Matt and Kristy, it turned out that time they had cancelled dinner with them was because Kristy was having a hard time during the pregnancy.
Everyone was there, including friends they hadnât seen in a while, all of them with their significant others: Spencer, Tara, Alex, Kate, David, Aaron and Elle.
At one point of the party, Penelope escaped from the conversations about marriage and kids, and she stood in a corner trying to go unnoticed, during the entire gathering Luke had kept an eye on her, since they were planning the party, he noticed the subject was still a sensitive for her.
âWe did goodâ He said as he leaned against the wall.
Penelope looked around his place, everyone seemed to be having a good time âYeah, I think it turned out pretty wellâ He offered his glass of wine, it was almost full âThank youâÂ
âIâve always known we were a dynamic duoâ This earned him an eye roll from Penelope, he expected her to say something else but she remained quiet and so did he.
She took in the scene of her friends with their children, the look on their eyes were like nothing she had ever seen before, she knew these people from a very long time and there was always a huge difference between the before and after having kids.
âI want thisâ Penelope said out of the blue.
âOkâ Luke said unsure as to what she was referring, he thought about it for a second âI can plan a birthday party for you next year, Penâ
âNot a party, I want to have a babyâ He didnât know what to say to that but just in that moment JJ walked over to them with Emerson in her arms.
âThis little one is looking for her fairy godmotherâ Emerson reached her arms to Penelope and she happily took the one year old in her arms.
âDid you, little Em?â She kissed her goddaughterâs head âI was missing you tooâ The baby babbled, content to be with her auntie.
âIâll go grab some cakeâ JJ turned around and walked towards the kitchen and Kristy came to join the three of them.
âThank you guys so much for thisâ She offered a warm smile âI promise you weâre done after this oneâ She announced while she rubbed her round belly.
âOh donât mind us, you have as many babies as you guys likeâ Luke joked and when they laughed, little Emerson joined them with a giggle.
âNo, weâre definitely done, itâs your turn to find someone and start giving us nieces and nephews, right, Emerson?â
âI think this one will get a little sister or brother before we know it, Em and JJ are over the moon being momsâ Penelope stated.
âI knowâ Kristy agreed âItâs been really touching seeing them in this new phaseâÂ
âI hope someday you guys get to see me being a momâ The nostalgia was obvious in her voice.
âItâs gonna happenâ Kristy assured her âAnd I canât wait, Penelopeâ She smiled to her and then proceeded to go with her husband.
Seeing Penelope with Emerson and the rest of their friendsâ children left him thinking, after the baby shower was over Penelope stayed to help him clean even when he told her to call it a night and go to get some rest, but she refused, they spent the next couple hours tidying up the place, once they were done Luke offered to order takeout but she didnât accept and went to her apartment.
Luke tried to get some sleep but he kept turning and tossing in his bed, his thoughts not letting him rest, he tried everything but ultimately failed, he looked at his alarm clock, it was almost 2:00 AM. Unable to get his idea out of his mind, he got up and walked towards the elevator, he needed to tell Penelope what was happening on his mind.
Once he got down to her floor, he stood outside her door for a few minutes thinking maybe it was too out of line to make her the proposition he was thinking about. He pressed his lips together and rubbed his palms in his pajama pants, trying to muster enough confidence to knock on her door.
He sighed and knocked a couple times.
Luke tried a few more times, wanting to tell Penelope what he was thinking about, after all it was his best friend, if she didnât accept, they could laugh it up and continue as if nothing happened.Â
Penelope opened the door âWhatâs up, Luke?â She put on her glasses as her eyes adjusted to the light.
âCan I come in?â
âYeah, whatâs wrong?â Penelope yawned.
He stared at her and took a deep breath âI want a babyâ Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
âAre you⌠Drunk?â She questioned and he shook his head.
âI want to be a dadâ He blurted.Â
âOk? Well I know everyone calls me the fairy godmother but itâs not like I can make a baby appear and give it to youâ
âWhat if you could?â Luke objected.
Penelope let out a frustrated sigh âAre you high?â
âNo, Penelope, you want to be a mom and I want to be a dad, we havenât found our person but weâre best friends I thought maybe we could try thisâÂ
âHow would that even work? Luke, what the fuck?âÂ
âLook, there are different types of families, two best friends having a kid and then finding their person doesnât sound too crazy to meâ He insisted.
âAre you being serious right now?â Penelope wondered, trying to examine his face to see if he was messing with her.
âI amâ He walked to her and took her hand âThink about it, weâre best friends, we have a baby and we split everything 50/50 costs, responsibilities, and it will be good because weâre not attracted to each other, we wonât get to have married couple fights and all the complicated partâ He offered a small smile to his friend who looked at him open-mouthed trying to process everything he was saying.
âI need some time to think about itâ Luke smiled when he heard those words and let go of her hand.
âAlright, thatâs okâ He walked towards the door âLet me know what you decide on, you know where to find meâ As he was about to leave, he turned around and quickly walked to her to hug her.
âGo to sleep, Alvezâ
âGarcia-Alvez has a nice ring to itâ He whispered in her ear before she swatted at his chest, he rushed to the door and closed it behind him, leaving Penelope standing there, shocked at his proposition but also thoughtful, she walked to her bedroom and snuggled once again in her bed, trying to regain her sleep before Luke came to disrupt her mind.
Penelope and Luke were busy with work for the next couple weeks, until one night she texted him if she could come up to see him, he instantly replied with a yes and Penelope was on her way with an answer to his proposition. She let herself in and walked to his living room, he was watching TV.
âHello strangerâ He patted the couch, inviting her to sit beside him.
She plopped next to him and Luke put his arm around her without taking his eyes from the screen âHowâs⌠life?âÂ
âGood I guess?â He quickly shot her a look with an eyebrow raised âHow about you?â
Penelope played with her hands âDid you mean what you said that other night?â Luke turned to her and took the remote control turning the TV off and giving her his undivided attention.
âAbout having a baby with you? Absolutelyâ His voice was firm and his face was serious.
âIâve thought about itâ She looked at him and he was waiting for an answer.
âAnd?â He questioned with raised eyebrows.
âOkâ Penelope stated in a whisper.
Luke smiled âOk?â
âOkâ She returned the smile âYou are right, there are different type of families and two friends having a kid doesnât sound like the worst ideaâ
He leaned forward to her âShould we get to it? Like now?â Penelope jumped.
âNo, not now but soon I guess, Iâm not sureâ She was suddenly self conscious, thinking that in an attempt to have a baby together, theyâd need to have sex.
âWe could do those fertility tests to know when youâre ovulatingâ Penelope looked surprised.
âHow do you know about those?â She asked with amusement.
âWhat? Because Iâm a guy I canât know? Come on, Pen, Iâm a modern menâ She chuckled and looked at him waiting for the truth.
âOk I saw it on a movie but I do want to know more about this, I plan on being there for you during the pregnancy, Lamaze classes and allâ
âAlright, we can talk about all of that later, Iâll just go have dinner nowâ As she was about to get up, Luke took her hand.
âDonât go, we can order something or I could cook something for youâ
âDidnât you already had dinner?â He noddedÂ
âBut you can have dinner here, you donât need to eat all by yourselfâ
âAlright Iâll go check your fridge, Iâm sure thereâs some leftover takeout I can eatâ Penelope went to the kitchen and Luke started to look for something she could also enjoy on the TV, this was their routine, having dinner at each otherâs apartments whenever they could, talking about life, family, dates theyâve been, adding a baby to their dynamic didnât sound like the worst idea.
âWe are having a babyâ Penelope announced to their friends, Luke was a little bit terrified of Derekâs reaction to the news, Penelope and him were very close.
âSo youâre finally together?â Savannah said with a smile on her face.
Derek who was sitting beside his wife started grinning, he knew this day would come âIâm happy for the both of youâ
âUhm, no, weâre not together, weâre just having a kidâ Savannahâs and Derekâs face changed into frowns.
âOhâ Savannah said smiling again, trying not to show her confusion, she wanted to be supportive of her friends, especially Penelope, she was Derekâs best friend.
âSo how far along are you, baby girl?â Derek wondered with a more serious expression.
âIâm not pregnant yet, we just decided to have a babyâ
âItâs because we both want to be parents so w-we came up with this ideaâ Luke added.
âWell, thatâs great, isnât it, babe?â Savannah squeezed Derekâs knee for him to say something supportive.
âYeah, yeah, it isâ He tried his best to offer an honest smile âHank would love to have another cousin, especially coming from his fairy godmotherâ
Penelope smiled at Luke reassuring him that everything was ok, he had expressed his concerns over Derekâs reaction but as close as Penelope and Derek were, this was her decision.Â
Later that evening Penelope offered to help Derek to do the dishes and he was glad he would have a moment alone with her.
âAre you sure about this, baby girl? The whole having a baby with Luke thing?â She noted the worry in his voice, she finished drying the last plate.
âI am, itâs not like we are getting any youngerâ She shrugged and leaned on the kitchen counter, he shot her a concerned look âHey, if you werenât married Iâd go to you for thisâ She joked nudging him with her elbow âJust imagine your DNA and mine, that kid would be something elseâ They both laughed.
âI can only imagine how thatâd conversation would goâ Derek commented while drying his hands.
âI actually canât, I mean Luke was really the one that came up with the subjectâ
âWas he now?â He asked with an arched brow
âStop it, itâs not like thatâ She rolled her eyes âWeâre friends, thatâs all we are and all weâre going to beâ
Derek shook his head and let out a sigh âAlright, if youâre sure then just know you have us for support, questions, help, anything you need, sweetness, and I better be godfatherâ
Penelope got teary eyed, it was really important to her to count on Derek for this new adventure, he was her most precious friendship, so listening to him saying those words made her feel more at ease, she was sure of her decision but that didnât mean she wasnât terrified of the changes coming up.
Soon all of their friends heard the news from Penelope and Luke, Matt and Kristy were very supportive, mostly because in their eyes those two belonged together, they thought that maybe for them the baby had to come first then theyâd realize how perfect they were for each other despite their differences. A contrast from Emilyâs and JJâs reaction, JJ had always been super protective of Penelope, and she thought this was a terrible idea where Penelope would end up being hurt, Luke was her friend as well and knew he wasnât a bad guy but raising a kid with someone was complicated even when you were in a serious relationship with someone you were in love with, Emily wasnât a fan of the idea either, someone was bound to get hurt and no matter who, their kid would have to pay the consequences, they didnât explicitly voiced their concerns but neither did they applaud their decision.
Kirsty, JJ brought their kids at Savannah and Derekâs for a playdate, and it was only a matter of time before the subject was brought up.
âSo what do you guys think about Pen and Lukeâs plan?â JJ asked watching Hank helping Emerson to get the toys she wanted.
âWell I hope she gets pregnant soon, so their baby can be close to this little one in ageâ Kristy replied while rubbing her stomach.
âItâs gonna be interestingâ Added Savannah while taking a sip of wine.
JJ squinted and looked at them âDonât you think itâs crazy for them to go through it? Penelope is too sensitive, Iâm not even sure sheâs not feeling something for him already, what if she gets her heart broken?â
âIt may not be ideal butâŚâ Savannah shrugged her shoulder and pressed her lips âItâs their decision and I donât think anything we say will change their mindsâ
âThey want to be parents, they are planning this and seemed excited, I donât think itâs the worst thingâ
The blonde woman remained silent, she was still unsure it was the right choice but everyone seemed to be on board so she tried to be supportive of Luke and Penelope, hoping with all her heart they theyâd prove her worries were silly and that they would make it work.
The day had finally come, they were trying tonight and Penelope was a bundle of nerves, Luke on the other hand was excited, lately his desire to be a father was getting stronger, all of his co-workers talked about their experiences in fatherhood and even though they shared both, the good and the bad, he was anxious to experience it firsthand.
âAlright Iâm readyâ Penelope announced as she entered his apartment in her mermaid nightie and fluffy robe with unicorn slippers, Luke smiled at the sight of her, soon with all the confidence she had mustered, Penelope straddled his waist.
âA âhello, how are you?â would be niceâ He joked and she lost all confidence, the blood traveled to her face and she stepped away from him but Luke took her hand and pulled her so she was sitting next to him âIâm kidding, itâs j-just I donât know, Iâm using humor to lighten up the moodâ
âIâm mortified, Lukeâ She admitted with closed eyes âWeâre having sexâ
âIt canât be that bad, I know it wonât be badâ Penelope opened one eye.
âHow could you know?â Luke shot her a smirk and a wink.
âIf weâre comfortable enough to have a baby together then Iâm comfortable enough to confess Iâve had some dreamsâ
Her eyes shot open âLUKE!â Penelopeâs voice raised with surprise.
âThatâs exactly how it soundedâ He joked and if Penelope wasnât red before she was now.
âOh my God, stop, I donât know if that makes me feel better or notâ Luke laughed, not really understanding why she was so worried.
âCome on, chica, itâs gonna be alrightâ He placed a strand of her out of her face.
She sighed and sat up straighter âOk, letâs do itâ
Luke caressed her cheek âAre you sure?âÂ
Penelope swallowed and nodded, he went on to kiss her and after a few seconds she started laughing.
âPen, this is not helping my confidenceâ He commented as he pulled away, Penelope rested her forehead on his.
âIâm sorry, itâs just, you know I laugh when I feel awkwardâ Luke softly placed his hands on her shoulders and got up.
He extended out his hand to her âLetâs go to the bedroomâ Penelope looked hesitant âIf you donât feel like doing this today, we can do it some other day, itâs okâ
âNo, I want to, itâs just⌠WeirdâÂ
âSo I shouldnât have lit the candles or put a million rose petals on the bed then?â Penelope rolled her eyes, he was teasing her to that one time a guy had done that and it was a huge turn off for her.
âShut up, shut up, shut up, I hate your mouth so muchâ
Luke loved to mess with her âI bet you a hundred bucks you wonât be saying that in a fewâ
âFuck you, newbieâ Penelope spat.
HIs hands signaled to himself âBe my guestâ This time he saw the eye roll on her face accompanied with annoyment and he decided to stop his teasing âAlright, alright, look, I know you like fresh sheets and I even used that softener you like, letâs go to bed and⌠Do thisâ
âI need a minuteâ She went to the bathroom and Luke sat on the edge of the bed, waiting for her, he licked his lips, hoping she wasnât regretting everything, soon Penelope came back and stood between his legs.
âOk, shut up for real this time and letâs do thisâ She placed her hands on each side of his face.
âOne baby coming upâ Penelope facepalmed â... In nine months, th-â She kissed him in an attempt to shut him up for good, Luke immediately responded and placed his hands on her hips.
Once they were done, they remained on his bed, both were hopeful that everything was on their side so within the next couple months they could see a positive pregnancy test, Penelopeâs awkwardness was all gone, she figured she was making a big deal of the whole thing, having sex with Luke wasnât bad and she actually had enjoyed it more than she thought she would.
âShouldnât you lift your legs up or something?â Luke suggested.
He didnât see her rolling her eyes âIs this another thing you saw in a movie?â
Luke turned to her âMaybeâ
âLetâs go to sleep Lukeâ She turned to the other side and fell asleep easily.
That night Luke had another dream with Penelope, except this time, in his dream they were a family, they were even married and had twins, he woke up in the middle of the night thinking about it, he remembered the joy he felt in his dream and allowed himself to imagine how life would be if that scenario became a reality, after a few minutes he shook his head, Penelope was just his friend, there was no interest in being more than that from either side.
They decided to give it a few tries, to increase the chance for them to get pregnant, the next times werenât awkward except for one time where Luke came in unannounced.
âPenâ He called for her entering her apartment âChica, letâs get to baby making, thereâs a game I really want to catch laterâ As he finished his sentence he reached Penelopeâs living room only to find her sitting there having dinner with a guy, Lukeâs eyes widened, she was going to kill him probably.
âUhm, I think you already have plans for tonightâ The guy said while getting to his feet.
âWait, Joe, itâs-â Penelope didnât know exactly what to say.
âNo, no, itâs ok, Iâll go, it was nice meeting youâ He hurriedly got his messenger bag and walked out of the apartment.
Luke immediately apologized âI shouldâve knocked, sorry, Iâm really sorryâ Penelope waved him off.
âA mutual friend set us up, she insisted a lot and I ended up saying yesâ She sighed âBut right now, Iâm not interested in dating, not when Iâm trying to have a baby with my friend, so itâs okâ He still felt terrible so he decided to skip the game and stayed to have dinner with her.
âPenâ Luke squeezed her hand âAre you actually gonna take the tests or are you just gonna stare at them?â She looked at him.
âMaybe if I stare them long enough theyâll get some sort of vibes from me and show us if that week of trying worked or notâ He smiled sympathetically, six weeks had passed since that week and Penelope avoided taking the pregnancy tests, even though her period had been late, she was scared of seeing the results, Luke was understanding and supportive, he had a good feeling but he put himself in Penelopeâs shoes.
âCome on, letâs goâ He took the bag of pregnancy tests he had bought and tried to guide her to the bathroom but she didnât move an inch âItâll all be okâ
âWhat if itâs not?â Penelope asked in a whisper.
âThen weâll get through it, togetherâ She felt tears coming to her eyes, she was terrified of the results, whatever they may be, she knew they would have an impact to her.
Luke was open to keep trying if the results were negative but he didnât know what Penelope wanted so he wanted to know what the tests actually ended up showing before bringing up the conversation. A few minutes later, he was waiting outside the bathroom for her, he was starting to get worried, she was silent.
âPenelope, can I come in?â No response, that didnât help his nerves âOk, Iâm coming inâ When he entered, he saw her face filled with what he believed to be surprise.
She barely smiled âItâs positive, all of them are actuallyâ Lukeâs lips spread into a wide smile.
âI knew I had a good feeling about thisâ He hugged her and kissed her hair, they were going to be parents.
The next few months flew by, soon they were getting ready to welcome the little one, true to his word Luke had been with Penelope as much as he could, whenever he wasnât at work he was beside her learning together, reading books, attending classes, building baby furniture, reading Penelopeâs favorite childrenâs books to the baby, feeling the baby kick for the first time, discussing names, imagining how life would be once the baby arrived.
None of them had been really interested in meeting new people during the pregnancy, until Phil, Lukeâs friend insisted on setting him up with a doctor, after much insistence Luke accepted, not without asking first Penelope for advice on whether he should go out with her or not.
âShe sounds great, you should do it, itâs been an eternity since youâve gone on a dateâ Penelope mentioned rubbing her belly âI miss listening to your disastrous dates stories, they are quite entertainingâ Luke glared at her and handed her the ice cream pint she had asked for.
âHa-ha, youâre very funnyâ He pursed his lips together âI think Iâm gonna tell Phil yesâ
Penelope winked at him while licking ice cream off her spoon âGreat, Iâll help you choose a nice outfitâ
A week later Luke was out with Lisa, Philâs friend, she was really nice, easy to talk with and gorgeous, she didnât seem to freak out entirely when he brought up that he was about to be a dad, he was actually enjoying the night, for a second he saw that she seemed distracted and looking behind him.
âIâm sorry, Lukeâ She cut him off âI think thereâs someone trying to get your attentionâ His brows furrowed as he turned around to find Penelope carrying her hospital bag, this immediately made him panic as he rushed to her.
âAre you in labor?â He took her by the shoulders and examined her.
âYes, my water brokeâ Luke was in shock for a second âAn hour ago but it is until now that the contractions are getting frequent andâŚâ She placed her hands on her shirt and clutched the fabric â...StrongerâÂ
âOh my God, you shouldâve called me the minute it happened, letâs goâ He tried to take her hand but she managed to remind him to give an explanation to the nice woman that looked at them with empathy in her eyes.
Soon they were settled in the hospital room, Penelope wasnât ready to push yet but both her and the baby were doing fine.
âYou were supposed to go into labor in two weeksâ Luke was scared this was a sign something was wrong but after some tests, doctors and nurses assured them everything looked normal.
âI guess we already know newbie junior is antsy like daddyâÂ
âWe donât even know if the babyâs a boyâ
âOh newbie is gender neutral, Iâve been calling them this without actually thinking itâs a boy or a girlâ
Luke smiled and started to push some strands of hair out of her face âYouâre being a champion, Pen, youâre handling everything amazinglyâ
Penelope laughed as she took deep breaths âOh, donât be fooled newbie, Iâm freaking out and I might pull one of those âwhat have you done to me? I hate youâ lines just like in the moviesâÂ
âIâll take it, chica, you can even punch me if you want, so I can experience at least a little bit of pain with youâ
âIâll keep that in mindâ She joked.
Soon Penelope started to push and not even once she cursed at Luke, he held her hand, cleaned the sweat off her forehead and kept encouraging her to trust her body, Penelope was exhausted and sometimes she felt like she couldnât go through it but then she remembered that after all the pain she would finally look her baby in the eyes and fall in love like she had never done before, she tried to remember everything she had learned from her doula, and within the hour she heard her babyâs cries.
Luke swore it was the most beautiful sound he had ever heard, while Penelopeâs eyes focused on the baby who was being all cleaned up.
âCongratulations, itâs a boyâ Doctor Kim said as she placed the newborn on his motherâs chest.
âHello youâ Penelope whispered with tears on her eyes, and Luke stood over her head watching his son âYou couldnât wait to meet us, little oneâ The small baby fuzzed.
âItâs alright, we couldnât wait to meet you eitherâ Luke said while seeing him open his eyes for a brief moment before he closed them and nuzzled to her momâs chest.
âHeâs here, Lukeâ She stated without taking her eyes off her boy âWe did itâ
The following morning, the new parents were still living in their own bubble with their son, he was healthy and so was Penelope.
âOk so we agreed on Bowie, right?â Penelope tried to see if Luke would budge.
âNo, sorry chica, we didnâtâ
âAlright, Ziggy thenâ Luke laughed softly, she kept suggesting those ever since she got pregnant.
âNopeâ
âOkâŚâ She tapped the babyâs little nose âDavid it isâ
âWhat about Julian?â He suggested and Penelope felt in her heart that was perfect for him.
âJulianâ She bit back the smile and thought about messing with him for a little âI guess weâll go with your suggestionâ
âHey, Iâm trying to-â Penelope finally looked up to him and smiled widely.
âIâm kidding, I love it, he looks like a Julianâ His tiny lips turned up in what looked like a tiny smile âSee? Jules agreesâ She passed the tiny bundle to Luke and he happily held his son.
âHello young Julian Garcia-Alvez, we love you more than you could ever imagineâ
Later that day Derek and Savannah came to visit, they couldnât wait one minute more to meet the new addition to their lives.
âHello, helloâ Savannah announced as she carefully opened the door and peeked her head âWeâre here to meet the handsome boyâ
âAh! We were waiting to see youâ Penelope was beaming at the thought of her found family meeting her boy âCome on inâ
Derek entered eyeing the three of them, he was glad for her best friend, she had always wanted to be a mom and now she had finally become one.
âLook at that, my baby girl had a baby boyâ Derek saw the tiny baby in Lukeâs arms, he was familiar with the look on Lukeâs face, it was one of pure love and adoration, the one he had for Hank when he had been born.
âLet me present to you to Julian Garciaâ
Derek raised an eyebrow at Penelope âItâs Julian Garcia-Alvez but I guess Lukeâs too lazy to say the full nameâ
Luke didnât even seem to hear them mention his name, he was to absorbed in his son âI love the name, heâs gorgeous, congratulations guysâ Savannah squeezed Penelopeâs shoulder.
After a conversation about how Penelope had to interrupt Lukeâs date and how was Julianâs birth, all while his auntie held little Jules, Savannah suggested Luke to go and get some tea and muffins, she wanted to give Derek and Penelope a moment so they could have a conversation of their own, ever since she had started dating Derek she knew him and Penelope shared a really special friendship and that sometimes they needed a moment just them alone to talk about life.
âWeâll be right backâ Luke glanced at Penelope and Julian and smiled at them before closing the door behind him.
They remained silent for a few minutes as they only focused on Julian who was now wide awake.
âHow are you feeling?â Derek asked softly.
âI feel like Iâm in a dreamâ She admitted âI canât believe this sweet little boy was given to meâ
He placed his hand in the side of her face âI already know youâre gonna be the most amazing mom to Julianâ Penelope leaned into his touch.
âThank you for being there, both you and Savannah were the two people that were the most supportive, Iâm still not sure JJ and Em are totally on board with this and Matt and Kristy they have five kids now so we donât get to see them much but you and Savannah were always there for usâ
âAnd we plan on continue being there for the three of youâ Penelope couldnât hold back her tears âMay I?â She carefully handed Julian over to him.
âCan I confess something? Iâm scared about how this is gonna go, I mean with Luke, how weâre gonna make this dynamic workâ
âBaby girl, are you sure you donât have feelings for him?â Penelope smiled.
âI love the guy, I mean heâs the father of my baby but no, thereâs no feelings thereâ She was being honest but still Derek felt uneasy, thinking the situation could change and Penelope would end with a broken heart.Â
âOk, well Iâm sure you will make it work, maybe it wonât be easy but both of you are very determined and at the end of the day itâs this little guy youâll be doing everything for so Iâm sure youâll be okâ
âOh, chocolate thunder, you always know what to sayâ Penelope stated seeing Derek smiling at Julian âI wanted to ask you something, well, Luke and I didâÂ
âAnythingâ
âWe were wondering if Savannah and you would like to be Julesâ godparents?â
âOh, Penelope, I wouldâve disowned you if you hadnât asked, of course, we would be honored to be his godparentsâÂ
âI love you, Derek Morganâ She reached out for his hand.
He looked at her and squeezed her hand âAnd I love you Penelope Garciaâ He looked down at his new godson âI love you too Julianâ
That day after Derek and Savannah, Lukeâs family, and the rest of their friends had visited them to meet Julian.
Penelope came out of Julianâs room, she had put him down to sleep, already knowing he was going to wake up in a few hours, three months had already come and gone, neither could believe how fast time was passing by, they had adjusted quite nicely.
âOk, I have some more things I need you to store in your apartmentâ She signaled some things next to the door, they were some coats, a pair of skis, shoe boxes, even her ukulele was being forgotten at the moment and since it was taking space it had to be stored on Lukeâs place, they had been doing that ever since theyâve brought Julian home.
âHave I ever told you you own way to many shoes?â Luke commented rubbing his eyes.
âAll the timeâ She smiled âI still donât careâ
âAlright, Iâll take them now and donât worry about waking up later, Iâll come down to feed himâ She raised an eyebrow.
âAre you sure?âÂ
âOf course, itâs around 2 when he wakes up, right?â Luckily for them, Julian was the greatest baby, he easily fell into routine, he woke up around the same time each night, so Luke had alarms and he came down so it wasnât only Penelope waking up at night.
âYeahâ
âOk, goodnightâ
For Luke it felt as if he had just closed his eyes when the alarm went off, he quickly got up and went to Penelopeâs place, he opened the fridge to find the different bottles, each of them were labeled:
One glass of wine.
Couple of Margaritas.
Pure.
Stressful day.
Pure.
He snorted and grabbed one of the bottles labeled as âpureâ and proceeded to warm it, he didnât hear any crying when he came in so he assumed Julian had yet to wake up demanding to be fed, a few minutes later the three month old woke up and Luke was ready to feed him, he sat in the rocking chair with the baby to his chest, once Julian was done with the bottle, he burped him and sat a little bit more with him, he loved those moments were he could hold his son and sing the lullabies his mom and grandma used to sing to him when he was a kid.
He was loving being a dad and co-parenting with Penelope, he practically lived there, he would leave only at night but even then, heâd come back and sometimes would end up crashing at the couch waking up at Penelopeâs. Luke placed Julian on his crib and left the room, as he walked out of the room he saw a photo of the three of them in the hallway and smiled, everything felt right.
Luke hurried through the stairs, he was coming home from work and Penelope was calling him nonstop to get home, he didnât wait for the elevator and took the stairs, once he opened the door, he was met by a crying Julian and a crying Penelope.
âIâve done everything and he wonât stop crying, he hates me, Lukeâ She said through her sobs.
Luke felt bad for Penelope, she was more sensitive than usual, the hormones were to blame, he went to them and took Julian in his arms.
âIâm his mom and he already hates meâ She cleaned her tears off her face.
Luke started to sway him from side to side âHe canât hate you now, wait until heâs sixteenâ
âLUKE!â Soon Julian stopped crying in Lukeâs arms âHow the fuck did you do that?â She asked in surprise.
âOh, I donât know I guess he loves me but he hates youâ He saw the tears on her eyes âIâm kidding, Iâm kiddingâ
Penelope sighed and sat on the couch âIâm returning to work soon and we donât have a nanny yetâ
âI know, I asked around some of my coworkers and they recommended me some agencyâ She smiled.
âThatâs great, but we need to be clear on somethingâ He looked at her with a frown âYou canât fuck the nannyâ
âPenelope! I wasnât planning on doing thatâ
âOk, just saying, newbieâ
By the end of the week they had hired Max to be Julianâs nanny, Penelope was faced with another challenge, learning how to manage going to work and being a mom, soon she discovered it was hard but she could handle it, she missed going to work, seeing her co-workers and having an excuse to actually put on some decent clothes and makeup.
Matt, Kristy, JJ, Emily and their six children were visiting Luke, Penelope and Julian, they hadnât seen them since the hospital, they were curious to see how âthe experimentâ as Emily called it was going.
âIâm not gonna lie, I think the reason they didnât invite us over sooner itâs because theyâre having a hard time adjustingâ Emily spoke up.
âYou think? I donât knowâ Matt replied.
âI mean it wouldnât be a surprise, becoming a parent itâs not easyâ Kristy added to Emilyâs comment.
âWeâre about to seeâ JJ said as they all stepped out of the elevator, it took five seconds for Penelope and Luke receive them, he had Julian on a baby carrier close to his chest.
âHello!â They said in unison, after a round of hugs and greetings, they went to the living room.
âPlease, get yourselves some drinks, I made some tapas, Iâll go get themâ Penelope announced and JJ joined her in the kitchen.
âHey, everything looks greatâ She meant it.
âThanks, we manage to keep everything in place but Jules is about to start crawling so next time you wonât find a tidy placeâ Penelope laughed.
JJ frowned âIs Luke living here?âÂ
âNo, well, kind of, he spends a lot of time with Julesâ She shrugged it off, it wasnât a big deal for them.
âPenelopeâŚâ JJ sighed âWhatâs this that you have going on?â Penelope rolled her eyes at her words, it wasnât the first time she questioned it and certainly wouldnât be the last.
âWeâre raising a baby, he stays over, sue meâ JJâs eyes widened âNo, he stays over but nothing happens, Iâm not attracted to him and heâs not attracted to me, itâs all fineâÂ
âOk, then itâs time for you to get yourself out there againâ
âActually Iâve been thinking about itâ
âSay no moreâ Her friend winked at her and Penelope just went long with it, JJ said about a co-worker of hers that sounded dreamy. Once they returned with some appetizers, everyone was settled, Luke had taken the older kids to the other room where they put on a movie for them and gave them some sandwiches and toys so they could be entertained.
âIt looks like youâre doing amazing, manâ Matt said as he placed Rose on the ground, she was eager to follow Emerson,
âYeah, it is, Pen and I are convinced we got very lucky with Julian, heâs greatâ
âWait until he starts walkingâ Emily commented while she watched Emerson closely, she was walking around the adults, observing what she could grab, unfortunately for her, the apartment was childproof so there was nothing she could really play with other than Julianâs toys and her own.
âI know I told Luke that by then Iâm sure Iâll have to give up my high heelsâ Penelope said while sitting down next to him and absentmindedly resting her hand in Lukeâs thigh âCan you imagine me running around a kid in five inch heels?â They all laughed and Luke placed an arm around her, everyone could see the look on his face as Penelope continued talking, Matt and Kristy shared a knowing look and JJ was just starting to think Penelope was lying about ânothing going onâ.
The rest of their visit went by quite quickly, all of them enjoying their time together, at some point, Penelope realizes itâs their first time her and Luke can relate to the parenting experiences and struggles, even though Derek, Savannah and Hank couldnât make it, her heart fills with joys as she sees most of her found family together.
âYouâre almost there, buddyâ Luke was sitting on the floor, multitasking, he folded laundry and watched Julian as he tried to stand using Lukeâs arm as support.
âBreakfast is ready for my favorite guysâ Penelope announced carrying two plates âHere, put these on the coffee table, Iâll go get Julesâ plateâ She leaned down to carry him âCome on little guy, letâs get those hands cleanâ
While Luke and Penelope both sat on the floor, Julian used the coffee table for support and finally managed to stand up and grab some of his breakfast, he was a good eater, they stared at him, amazed by the little boy who owned their hearts.
âCan you believe heâs almost nine months? Heâs getting so bigâ She sighed nostalgically.
âI know, I feel like in no time heâll be going to preschoolâ Luke added as he took a bite of his own breakfast.
âDonât even startâ Jules looked up to his mom âYeah, baby, what if we slow down a little with this whole growing up so fast? Can you do that for mommy?â Luke was also looking at Penelope, he was thinking about how wonderful the last year and a half of his life had been, since finding out about the pregnancy to that very moment, he felt extremely content to have Julian and Penelope in his life.
âMa!â He exclaimed and went back to grab a fistful of scrambled eggs.
Luke smiled at his son then he turned to Penelope âYou know? I donât think itâs been that hard, all of thisâ
âRight?â She took a sip of juice âI feel the same, we make a good team, newbieâ Just as Luke was about to say something else, Penelopeâs phone dinged, she quickly took it and smiled at the screen, he remained silent and took Julian and sat him between his legs and put his plate in front of him so he could continue eating his breakfast.
âYouâre done, Julianâ He said to his son as the baby looked up to him with wide eyes âYeah, itâs gone, itâs all in your tummy now, come on, letâs get you changedâ
âOh, I can change him, donât worryâ Penelope took her eyes off her phone.
âAlright, Iâll go wash theseâ He said as he took the dishes into the kitchen, trying to think who was Penelope texting.
A very happy Penelope entered the kitchen carrying a very happy Julian, they went to stand beside Luke as he finished drying the plates.
âYouâre in a good moodâ Luke stated trying to seem nonchalant.
Penelope couldnât hold back the smirk âI am, I need to tell you somethingâ She sat Julian in the kitchen counter âIâm going out with someone tonightâ
Luke wasnât sure why he felt a stinging sensation in his heart âOhâ He couldnât think of something else to say.
Her smile soon changed into a frown âIs that ok? I thought this was my free night, but if youâve got plans I can- â Luke interrupted her.
âNo, no, no, no plans at allâ He tried his best to fake smile âItâs great, Iâm happy for you, whoâs the lucky guy?â
âHis name is Sam, JJ set us up, weâve been texting these past couple weeks and we decided to go out todayâ
âGreatâ Luke said without looking at her nor sounding very cheerful but Penelope failed to notice that.
Later that evening Penelope was a nervous wreck, she had facetimed JJ and Emily to voice her concerns about going on a date, she felt like she didnât even remembered how to go on a first date, she remained sat on her bed, with her robe on, looking at the outfit her friends had helped her choosing, she thought about calling Derek, he was great at helping her when she wasnât feeling her best self, as Luke passed her bedroom after putting Julian to bed, he stopped and saw that she didnât have the happy look she had that morning.
He opened the door a little bit more and peeked at her âHey, how is getting ready going? Everything good? Did he cancel?â
Penelope quickly looked up âNo, itâs just that Iâm nervousâ As soon as she said she felt a little embarrassed âThatâs stupid, isnât it? Oh Godâ Luke entered and sat beside her and took her hand.
âNot at all, itâs normal to be nervous before going on a first date, but Iâm sure youâll be fine, from what I gathered heâs a great guyâ
Her eyebrows raised âDid you eavesdropped my conversation with the girls?â
âPen, you were literally sitting across Julian and Iâ
âOh, thatâs true, sorry, I was a little distracted thenâ She confessed running her hands through her hair.
âShould I prepare some tea for you and your nerves?â He suggested, not liking to see her stressed and thinking she shouldnât be worrying, it was impossible she wouldnât blow the guyâs mind, she was a catch.
Penelope placed one hand on the side of his face âLuke, that would be wonderful, you are a giftâÂ
âAlright, you continue getting ready and Iâll bring your tea in a momentâ Just as he was about to leave, Penelope called him âYeah?â
âNevermindâ She sighed and stood up to start doing her hair.
âPenelope? Come on, you can tell me anythingâ He leaned in the door frame, waiting for her to say something, instead she turned around and opened her robe, she was in her underwear.
âDo you think my body is ready to, you know, get out there?â Luke ignored the sensations the image in front of him caused to his body and walked to her, putting his hands on either side of her face.
âYou are beautiful, Penelope, donât ever think youâre not, you couldâve gone out on a date the next month after having Julian for all I knowâ She blushed and looked down âI mean it, you are the whole package, youâre smart, kind, witty, and sexy as hell so stop doubting yourself and if for some reason this guy doesnât seem to be into you, then weâll tell JJ, her friend is out of his mindâ He kissed her hair.
âYou really have a way with words, Alvezâ She managed to look up and smiled âWe need to find you someone as wellâ He pressed his lips together and thatâs when he knew he didnât want someone else, he wanted Penelope.
As he prepared her tea, he sat on a stool and tried to think when his feelings for her had changed, he was sure he didnât feel that way before, or maybe he was but didnât realize? He was so deep in his thoughts he didnât listen the kettle whistling, he rushed to it so it wouldnât wake Julian up but he was late, he went to get him and later appeared in Penelopeâs room with Jules attached to his hip and nuzzled in his neck in one arm and a mug in the other.
âHere you goâ He said placing it on her vanity.Â
âOh thanksâ She glanced at him through the mirror âAnd thanks for getting him, I canât exactly stand up fast and move freely with these attached to my boobsâ She laughed.
âItâs okâ
âIsnât this sexy?â She joked âHair curlers on my head, makeup half done and pumping breast milkâ Penelope laughed, she felt much more relaxed after Lukeâs words.
He managed to smirk, it was an amusing image but in that moment it was also a beautiful one to him, even though in some part of his heart he felt it was wrong seeing her getting ready to go out with someone else.
âYour mom doesnât believe what I tell her, Jules, please donât be like her when you grow upâ Penelope swatted his stomach.
âHey! Donât put my baby against meâ She reached to Julian and Luke got him closer to Pen âGo to sleep, my sweet boy, I love youâ The sleepy baby barely registered his mom kissing his forehead.
Luke put Julian to sleep and half an hour later saw Penelope walk out the door, he tried to watch TV but got distracted every few minutes by his thoughts who were set on Penelope and how her date was going, he glanced at the clock every frequently and even at the door, hoping to see her come in and say she wasnât going out anymore because she had realized it was him she wanted to be with.
He leaned back on the couch âStop, Alvezâ He said to himself, he thought about calling Matt but it was kinda late, so he decided against it, after what it seemed like an eternity, Penelope walked through the door, she quickly took off her shoes and coat, she didnât see Luke until he spoke.
âHey, how was it?â He said rubbing his eyes.
âOh, sorry I didnât mean to wake youâ
âItâs ok, I wasnât sleeping well anyway, so did you have a good time?â Penelope smiled widely and nodded.
âJJ was right, heâs amazing, I-I think he could be the one, and I know it sounds precipitated to say that but...â Luke felt his heart break and couldnât even focus on what she was saying, he felt his world starting to crumble down âLuke? Are you hearing what Iâm saying?â
He snapped out of it âYeah, yeah, Iâm glad, Pen, uhm I guess we wonât have to complain to JJ about itâ He rubbed his palms against his jeans and got up âIâm gonna call it a night, Iâm gonna go up, ok? Iâll see you guys tomorrowâ
âOk, have a good nightâ She replied with the smile that had never left her lips since her date started, she really felt a connection with Sam.
A few weeks passed by and Luke called Matt to ask him if he wanted to go shoot some hoops with him, Matt found the urgency in his voice odd and was sure it was a bad sign, he agreed and met him at the basketball courts they frequented. As they started, Luke tried to tell him how he had felt ever since Penelope had started seeing Sam, he was going around about other things without saying what he actually meant.
At one moment when Luke tried to take the ball from Matt, he abruptly stopped and went to the bench signaling Luke to go with him.
âSo you have feelings for Penelopeâ It was a statement not a question.
âThatâs not what I-â Matt rolled his eyes.
âCut the bullshit, Luke, I wasnât asking, I know for a fact you do, it was bound to happen and that time we all went to your house, you looked at her the way I look at Kristy, the way Derek looks at Savannahâ
âYou shouldâve told me then, maybe then she wouldnât have gone out with mr. Wonderfulâ
âHey, it wasnât up to me to get your stubborn ass to come to terms with your feelings, it was something you had to figure out on your own, unfortunately you did until you saw her with someone elseâ He drank water as Luke sat beside him running his hands through his hair.
âShould I talk to Derek? Ask him some advice?â Matt snapped his head at him.
âAbout what? Winning her over? I hate to say this but if sheâs happy with this Sam guy, you shouldnât interfereâ Luke looked at him feeling almost betrayed âDude, I know sheâs feeling very happy, sheâs talked to Kristy and she seems hopeful to see where it leadsâ
Luke sat with his head in his hands, not liking what he was hearing but knowing Matt was right, Luke himself had witnessed Penelopeâs new happiness and excitement over the relationship âWhy do I have to be so fucking stupid? Imagine if I had known before, maybe it wouldâve been us in a relationshipâ Matt patted his shoulder.
âHey, their relationship is fairly new, no one knows, maybe theyâll be done in a few months and youâll have your chance, donât lose all hope but donât interfereâ
He sit up âI guess youâre rightâ
âYou should try and find someone as well, give it a try and see where it goesâ
âYeah, maybe I will, I donât knowâ Matt got up.
âAlright, letâs resume the game âcause Iâm beating your ass, Alvezâ Luke rolled his eyes and followed his friend.
A few days later, after getting some groceries Luke had encountered with Lisa, the woman he was on a date with the day Penelope had gone into labor, he remembered how nice she was and they agreed on meeting again sometime, soon after that they were dating and although he knew he still had feelings for Penelope, she was very happy with Sam, he had met him and he hated the fact that there wasnât much to dislike about him. He was amazing to Penelope and Julian, he was attentive, very respectful, kind, and the list went on, Luke was starting to come to terms that maybe Penelope and Sam were going to become permanent at some point and it did hurt him to think about it, but then he remembered he had Lisa, who was also an incredible person that was very understanding of his co-parenting situation.
It was almost New Yearâs and the entire gang were going to a cabin to spend it together, it was the first trip since Julian was born and Penelope and Luke brought significant others, everyone was excited to spend the holiday together.
Penelope was packing her suitcase for the trip, Luke had packed Julianâs the day before so she only had to worry about her stuff, she remembered Luke had her skis and went up to ask him if he could take them in his car. As the door opened she was met with a smiling Lisa, the one year old in Penelopeâs arms squealed happily.
âIsa!â He extended his arms to her and Lisa looked at Penelope to which the blonde nodded and allowed Julian to go with her before asking to be down.
âPen! Youâre here, are you ready?â Luke greeted her.
Penelope swallowed unable to get her eyes off Lisa who was helping Julian to walk âUhm yeah, almost ready, I was wondering if you could take my skis?â
âSure thing, I already loaded them in the carâ
âAlright, weâll get goingâ Penelope announced wanting to have his son back in her arms.
âHey, if you want we can take Julesâ Luke suggested and before Penelope could say anything Lisa spoke.
âOh, absolutely, we could do thatâ Penelope gave them a tight lipped smile and clasped her hands together.
âAlright if you want to, itâs alright, I mean, if youâre sureâ
âOf course, heâs the sweetest boy, arenât you Jules?â Julian hugged Lisaâs leg and Penelope felt something she didnât know how to label.
âOk then, Iâll see you guys laterâ
âWait Pen, Iâll go down with you to get Julesâ stuffâ Luke walked with her to the elevator and for the first time in years, there was an awkward silence, at least thatâs how it felt to Penelope whereas to Luke was just a normal silence.
âIs it okay that Julian goes with us, right?â He turned to her.
âOh, yeah, totallyâ She mirrored his actions.
âIâm really looking forward to this trip, itâs the first time JJ, Em, Derek and Savannah are gonna meet Lisaâ Penelope shot him her best forced smile and nodded.
Luke was in fact, telling the truth, his relationship was in a good place, he felt hopeful about a future with Lisa, she was very clear by telling him that she was looking for something serious and it came as a surprise to him when he found himself telling Lisa, he was also expecting to be with someone for the long run and that they should work towards a relationship of that kind, he was finally moving on from Penelope.
Or so he thought.
The cabin they rented was beautiful, it was big but cozy at the same time, everyone, adults and kids, were excited to be spending the next few days there, getting to know Sam and Lisa a little bit more since everything indicated they could eventually be more present in their lives. Matt and Kristy entered carrying, what it seemed like twenty bags, followed by their five kids, David holding little Roseâs hand who was excited to be walking in the house.
âThe Simmonses have arrivedâ Derek yelled as he walked over to them to help with their stuff.
âWe have and we are ready for the kids to be with their uncles and aunts while mom and dad restâ Kristy joked placing the bags on the floor.
âYou definitely deserve some relax time, you guys are saintsâ JJ said hugging the kids.
âWhere are the others?â Mat asked.
âWeâre here!â Penelope announced appearing from the kitchen walking hand in hand with Sam âIâd like you to meet Samâ
âOh weâve heard great things about you, itâs great to finally meet you, Iâm Matt, this is Kristy, and these are Jake, David, Lily, Chloe and Roseâ Sam shook hands with the married couple and high fived the kids.
âNice to meet you all, I was looking forward to finally see you, I have two boys myself that are actually your age I thinkâ He said to Jake and David âSo if you want to play something maybe I can join youâ Both kids eagerly nodded.
The next couple days, almost everyone seemed to be having a great time, except for Emily and JJ, they seemed a little bit off but no one dared to ask why, it was only at moments they would be quiet than usual and seemed to be a little bit out of it, they tried to put pieces together but no one seemed to have a clear idea of what was going on, they didnât look distanced from each other nor from Emerson, so they tried to not interfere.
âOh, Iâm happy to see youâre feeling better, babe, are you joining us for breakfast?â Penelope said to Savannah who had missed previous breakfasts.
âYes, Iâll be down in a minuteâ She replied while tapping Julianâs nose.
Penelope went down and found Sam helping the kids with their breakfasts, it was a funny and sweet sight, Jake, David, Chloe, Lily and Hank gathered around him as he placed pancakes on all of their plates.
âLook at you JJ, you finally got it right with Samâ Kristy teased her, JJ had the worst record setting up Penelope and it was a never ending joke between the group of friends.
The blonde woman rolled her eyes and smirked âIf you ever decide to have a kid, Pen, I must be the godmotherâ She half joked.
âI donât know, maybe eventuallyâ Both Kristy and JJ snapped their heads at her âWhat? I think this is going somewhere, he has two kids, I have one but I donât knowâ
âI canât believe thereâs something you donât know, Penâ Lukeâs voice made them turn around to see him walking from the hallway, having listened only the last part of what Penelope was saying âGood morning ladies, I made some coffee if you wantâ
âThanks Luke, whereâs Lisa?â Kristy questioned.
âOh, sheâs getting ready for the day, sheâll be out in a fewâ
Once they were all sitting in the large dining table, Derek called their attention, both him and Savannah had big smiles on their faces.
âWe would like to tell you that next year weâll need a bigger cabinâ Savannah taking her husbandâs hand.
Derek continued âThereâs going to be not one, but two new Morgans causing troubleâ The entire group erupted in cheers and congratulations, JJâs eyes went immediately to her wife, she knew her and knew that it took everything in Emily to smile, they were going through some stuff.
Part of the group had decided to go skiing while the others preferred to stay at the cabin and drink some hot chocolate, Matt, Derek and Luke walked a few feet behind Sam, Lisa and JJ.
âSo Morganâs party of five? How are you holding up?â Matt asked Derek, he remembered the surprise, nervousness and excitement that came when receiving the news he was going to have twins.
âOh man, I canât believe it, I still am processing all of it, Hankâs four so Iâm not even sure I remember exactly how life with a newborn is, let alone twoâ All along Luke and Matt noticed how his features softened.
âI bet you and Savannah will get the hang of itâ Luke assured him.
âYou know we got you guys, so anything we can help with, Iâm sure thereâs some stuff we have that we donât use anymore but itâs in great shape that you could useâ Matt added and Derek felt thankful for them, all of them.
âNow that I have a son maybe youâll finally trust me to babysitâÂ
âIâm not sure, weâll see, weâll seeâ Derek teased him and Luke scoffed.
âI vouch for him, Derek, Iâm actually sort of proud of you, dudeâ Matt turned to Luke âItâs really warming to see you with Julianâ
âI gotta agree with that, I was just messing with you Luke, what Matt is saying itâs true, Iâve loved to witness both you and baby girl, as parents to Julesâ
âThanks guys, it means a lot to have your support and to have you as a part of Julianâs lifeâ Luke spoke from his heart but he also needed to point something out âNot to end the soft moment here, but did you see Samâs face the other night when you called Penelope âbaby girlâ?â
âOh I did, it took everything in me not to burst into laughter, Kristy actually kicked me in the shin beneath the tableâ Luke laughed.
âHonestly Iâm so used to it that I didnât notice but Savannah did and she told me to do something about it but Penelope assured me that she had explained everything to him and that he seemed fine with it, but Iâve toned it down a lot, I donât know, I think this could be it for Penelope you know?â Luke swallowed, he had thought about it but wasnât sure what to make of it.
Matt spoke up âThey seem to be very serious, I like himâ
âI guess I do too?â Derek shrugged, his mind remembering how just a few months ago he was convinced Luke was the one for Penelope, Luke and Matt eyed him curiously and that made him rephrase his words âI-I do like him, itâs just Iâm super protective of her but he makes her happy so yeahâ Luke refrained from offering his thoughts on Penelopeâs relationship, he wasnât sure what he made of it, how he felt, just then Lisa called out for him and he remembered he had an amazing woman in his life.
It was finally New Yearâs Eve, the kids were all asleep and the adults were planning on enjoying dinner and drinks together, they were halfway through their dinner when Sam brought up an interesting subject.
âI have to say, Iâve been curious how did you come up with the idea of having a child together? Whose idea was it?â He wondered genuinely interested in listening the story.
âI⌠Donât rememberâ Penelope tried to shrug it off, not wanting to discuss that in front of everyone.
âIt was me actually, I had the idea, she had talked to me about wanting to be a mom and I wanted to be a dad and next thing we know we had Julesâ Luke replied nonchalantly.
âThe truth is he wanted this genepool for his kid, I mean, can you blame him?â Penelope joked while signaling herself.
âAnd have you thought what exactly are you gonna tell him when heâs older? About his parents being with other peopleâ Lisa inquiried, her tone wasnât rude at all.
The rest listened and focused on their plates, that was until a tipsy Emily decided to jump in the conversation.
âOh, I want to listen to this, I bet they didnât think about itâ
âWell we might have talked about it once or twice but didnât came up with a plan exactlyâ Penelope replied nervously, thinking it wasnât any of their business, except Luke and hers.
âIâm sure youâll do great, at least you were always aware that you were going to have the conversation, I never believed I had to until I got divorcedâ Sam interjected, regretting bringing up the subject.
âNo, but that actually makes more sense to me, I mean why you decide that youâll bring a child into a world with someone you donât loveâ The alcohol started to make Emily talk way more than she intended to
JJ tried to stop her, she took her hand âBabe, stopâ Emily shook her hand and ignored her suggestion.
âYou were in love with your wife I assume, I understand shit happens, people get divorced all the time and have to talk about this with their kids but doing it deliberately? I canât fucking understand itâ
Luke cleared his throat âEm, with all due respect, thatâs how you think but-â Emily cut him off.
âNo, not only me, everyone on this table believed you were crazy for doing thisâ She slurred âWe all thought having a kid with someone you donât love wasnât the brightest ideaâ
Penelope who had remained silent, couldnât hold it anymore and started to speak âOk Emily but how are you so sure we donât love each other? Iâve known Luke for more than half of my life, heâs one of my closest friendsâ She took a deep breath trying not to raise her voice and continued âHe has been there through the good and the bad more than any of you have, sure itâs because weâve been practically neighbors for years but that doesnât make it less valid, I know pretty much anything there is to know about him and I love him for who he is, I know why when we first met him he was kind of a loner, I know heâs not a great cook but he does a mean lasagna, I know heâs loyal and honest and has one of the kindest hearts ever, we have the same values, we have the same sense of humor, I know his position on just about everything and I wholeheartedly agree with him, what better man could I have possibly chose to be the father of my son? Huh? So please refrain from giving your opinion on something thatâs not your business at all, Emâ Luke seemed to be at loss of words, many different emotions were going through his heart, for a second he forgot why was Penelope telling all of this, because of Emily, and everyone else seemed to fade into the background, he wasnât moving on with his life, he was deeply in love with Penelope Garcia.
âWell-â Penelope cut Savannah off
âAnd I know, I just know that no matter what happens in a year or two or ten, weâll be fine, because we love each otherâ She finished feeling how her pulse had quickened.
Emily snorted âAlright if you say so, but let me tell you something, you seem fine now but life gets complicated, friendsâ She addressed the entire gang âYou donât know it yet but it doesâ She rushed to their bedroom and JJ goes after her not before muttering apologies to Penelope, Luke and the rest of their friends, everyone is uncomfortable and confused by Emilyâs outburst.
Penelope is excited to see everyone and celebrate Lukeâs birthday together, sheâs rushes out of the cab to the restaurant, only to find Luke in the waiting area of the restaurant.
âHi, happy birthdayâ Luke hugged her âWhereâs everybody? I thought I was going to be the last one here?â She breathed out.
âOh, itâs just us tonightâ Penelope frowned but didnât say a thing âJulian seemed really happy to be with his grandmaâ Luke tried to change the subject so she wouldnât question him.Â
âAw, he does love her, howâs your mom?â He took the chair out for her and then proceeded to take his sit.
âSheâs doing alright, she asked me to say hi to youâ He passed the message, knowing his mom wouldnât forgive him if he forgot to do so.
âI should go and visit Elena one of these days, talking to her always lifts my spiritsâ                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Â
âYeah, Iâm sure sheâd be thrilled to see you, she loves you, Penâ He leaned against the table and took her hand in his.
âSheâs the sweetest, reallyâ She adjusted her glasses and opened the menu âAnd whereâs Lisa?âÂ
âNo Lisa tonight, sheâs on dutyâ He lied, rubbing his beard.Â
Penelope pouted âOh, Iâm sorry, Lukeâ When he saw her sympathetic look he decided to cut the act.
âDonât be, because itâs actually not trueâ Her face filled with confusion.
âOh no, what happened?â
âNothing, everything was great, sheâs greatâ Luke looked down and felt it coming.
âThen whatâs wrong?â Penelope asked with a furrowed eyebrows.
âNothingâs wrong, Iâm sure my mom wouldâve loved her butâŚâ He looked in her eyes and once again grabbed her hand âAll I do when Iâm with her is think about you and only youâ Penelope mouth fell open, she felt the air removed from her lungs âI didnât want her here tonight nor anyone really, I broke things off with her, I wanted my family with me and I realized you are my familyâ His voice broke âYou and Julian are everything I need to get through lifeâ The moment Penelope realized there were tears on his eyes, her own vision became blurry, she moved her chair to be next to him and leaned her head in his shoulder.Â
Next thing she knew Luke was lifting her chin and searching for her lips, she pulled away even before their lips touched âLuke, Iâm with Samâ
âOh, yeah, sorry I should allow you to talk to him before-â Penelope closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
âWeâre moving in togetherâ Luke forgot how to breathe for a moment âI met his kids a few months ago and weâve been talking about taking the next step ever since and we found a great place, Iâm sorry, Lukeâ
He looked confused âBut what about all you said that time Emily questioned us?â
Penelope look dumbfounded âI-I, it wasnât a lie, I meant everything that I said, I love you but I-Iâm not-â She took the hair out of her face âI love you so much as a friend, I thought we were on the same page, I donât know what-â Luke let her go and got up, he needed to get out of there âLuke, waitâ Before Penelope could walk to him, he was gone, and she was left there not knowing what to do of his confession.
The truth was her and Sam were in a great place, they were looking forward to start a life together, they had even discussed marriage, Julian loved him, she loved Taylor and Benji, Samâs kids, everything seemed to fall into place with him.
The next months after that, Luke and Penelope barely spoke unless it was regarding Julian, the times where they would just spend weekends together with their son were long gone, Julian still spent a lot of time with his parents just separately, Penelope was starting to pack their stuff, she felt terrible and she wanted Luke to lash out at her, to tell her off, yell at her for taking Julian to another house, instead all Luke ever did was remain distant, she couldnât blame him but she missed her best friend.
Penelope sighed âWhatâs going on in that beautiful mind of yours?â Derek said, he had offered to help her packing the last stuff before she was out of the apartment.
âDo you think Iâm making a mistake by moving in with Sam?â He frowned, not knowing exactly where that was coming from, she had seemed when she told him and Savannah the news.
âI think you should do what makes you happy, if-â Penelope didnât let him finish his sentence.
âDo you think I shouldâve given Luke and I a chance?â Derekâs eyebrows raised, he was surprised at her question.
âWhy are you asking this?â Penelope bit her lip and then sat down on the floor, since there was no couch or chairs left, and proceeded to tell him what had happened a few months ago, as Derek listened he didnât have it in him to be surprised by Lukeâs feelings nor Penelopeâs second guessing her decision.
âLook, baby girlâ He started as he cleaned the tears falling on her cheeks âI still think you should do what makes you happy, and follow your heart, you shouldnât do something because you feel obligated to, you know? Moving in with Sam because you already leased the house or give Luke a chance because heâs the father of your sonâ Derek wrapped an arm around her âThereâs nothing more I want than to see you happy, whether is with Sam, Luke, only you and Jules, look, even if you wanna go back to whatâs-his-name letâs go live in a farm guy?â She laughed through the tears âI want you to be happy and Iâll be there for you, ok?â
âOkâ She managed to say âKevin, he was the one that wanted me us to go and live in a farmâ
âAlright, well if you wanna go live in a farm Iâm sure Julian will love all the free space to run aroundâ They laughed and Derek kissed her forehead, hoping sheâd follow his advice and go with whatever made her truly happy.
Penelope was meeting Emily for drinks, she entered the bar to see Emily already sitting there, she greeted her and they started to catch up, it had been a really long time since they last saw each other, once again, life making it complicated to hang out more often.
âSoâ Emily started âI donât think I ever actually apologized about that one timeâ She felt embarrassed reminiscing her behaviour during that New Yearâs.
âCome on, Emâ Penelope waved her off âItâs ok, you donât have to say anythingâ
âNo, but I do, I was- we were going through a difficult time, JJ and I were going through the adoption process for Nick and we werenât getting matched and there were a lot of setbacks, thatâs why we didnât tell any of you at the time but it was difficult for us and of course, JJ was way better than at handling everything and I just let out my frustration that time when it wasnât my place to say anything, I was an asshole to youâ Penelope placed a hand on her shoulder.
âDonât say that, Emily, we all snap sometimes, Iâm sorry you were going through that but now you have Nick and heâs a great kidâ Penelope smiled remembering the curly boy.
âI didnât mean anything that I said, I mean, we did have our doubts but you proved it was possible to do what you didâ
âOh no, I actually think you were right, itâs a bit of a mess right nowâ Penelope looked away.
âI... Know, and even though the situation is not great right now, Iâm sure youâll get through itâ Emily gave her a sympathetic smile and Penelope nodded âI gotta say one more thing though, Iâll never understand why you guys didnât even tryâ
The blonde woman just shrugged, at that point neither did she âItâs just, weâve been friends for half of our lives, it wouldâve been, I donât know, weird? Weâve seen each other at our worse and our best, heâs like always been thereâ As much as Penelope tried to convince herself it wouldnât have worked out, she never actually did it.
âBabe, I donât see how thatâs badâ Emily commented taking a sip of her drink, her words echoed in Penelopeâs head.
Luke opened the door and Julian immediately launched himself at him.
âDaddy!â He clung onto Lukeâs neck while Penelope awkwardly stood there.
âSorry I couldnât pick him up tonightâ Luke said, looking at Julian instead of her, he was still hurt but really trying to move on this time.
âDonât worry, itâs okâ Luke expected to see her turn around and go back to her place but she remained there âI found this at my place, itâs your birthday present from last year, you never actually got it so I thought I should bring itâ He saw the bag in her hands and it just reminded him of the day he had gotten his heart broken.
âOh, Penelope, I appreciate it but Iâm fine, I donât need anythingâ
âPlease, I insistâ She offered it to him and Julian was fast take it.
âOpen it, daddy!â He started to kick his legs so Luke would put him down.
âIâll open it tomorrow, bud, itâs time for bed nowâ He could see Julian was not happy about it.Â
âNO!â Julian dropped to the floor âOpen it! Open it!â The terrible twos were not a joke, he started to throw kicks and Luke kneeled to his level.
âJules, itâs time to go to bed, come onâ He grabbed him in his arms.
âOpen the pwesentâ Luke sighed.
âIâll make you a deal, we open it and then you go to bedâ Julian seemed to calm.
âIâm gonna get going now, good night Jules, have sweet dreams, my loveâ She took a step to them and leaned to kiss Julianâs head, when she was about to step away she grabbed her sweater.
âStay!â Penelope softly took his little hand and let herself free from his grasp.
âI canât, I gotta go, babyâ Julian started to cry.
âMaybe you can stay and help us with bedtimeâ Luke suggested, Penelope silently agreed.
They walked towards Julianâs bedroom and Penelope felt like an outsider, it had been a long time since she had walked inside Lukeâs home, once they got there, she helped Julian to put on his PJâs while Luke watched them and untuck his bed covers.Â
âPwesent!â Julian said once he was underneath his blankets, each of his parents sat on either side of the bed next to him.
Luke opened the bag and put out something that look like a binder? Photo album? âLuke + Jules + Penâ was engraved on the cover, when he opened it, he saw it was a scrapbook, it had photos of him and Penelope when they first met back in college, ticket stubs of that time when Penelope was in different plays, from when all of the gang had gone to see the Yankees, Lukeâs favorite baseball team, photos of them with their friends and then it was Julianâs first sonogram, photos of Penelope pregnant, photos of their baby shower, their first picture the three of them that Savannah had taken at the hospital, all of it was filled with memories.
Luke closed it abruptly, it was all too much for him âAlright, bud, itâs time for you to sleep, weâre picking up Roxy from the shelter tomorrow, remember?â A sleepy boy nodded and just when Penelope and Luke thought they had won, Julian spoke again.
âMommy, stay!â Penelope tried her best to smile.
âI have to go to your other home, remember?â Luke noticed how Penelopeâs voice faltered and decided to back her up.
âJulian, remember what I told you about your two houses? That only the most special little boys get two, so Mommy needs to go and take care of your other houseâ
âI want Mommy to stay!â He demanded, starting to cry again.
It took everything in Penelope not to tell him that he wanted to stay as well so she just held him and sang the lullaby Luke used to sing to him when he was a baby, it didnât take long until he fell asleep, Penelope kissed his forehead and silently left the room with Luke behind her.
Before she could speak Luke beat her to it âDrive safe, Iâll take him to you on Sundayâ He said and Penelope could only nod as she walked out of the door an to her car.
She sat there for a few minutes, not realizing tears were rolling down her cheeks, when she calmed down she started to drive home, it took her ten minutes to decide she was not going home, she made an u-turn to go back to Lukeâs place.
She knocked, unsure what she was going to say but trusting it would be the right thing.
âPenelope? Did you forget something?â Luke asked, confused as to why she was back.
She walked right past him into his apartment âRemember when I asked you if you had met your person?â She said with tears in her eyes.
âYesâ He breathed out.
âWe both said noâ Penelope stated âCan you ask me if Iâve met my person, please?â Luke felt some sort of anger form in his chest.
âWhy? So you can tell me itâs perfect Sam? I donât under-â
âPleaseâ She interrupted him âPlease ask meâ
âHave you met your person?â
âYeah, I have, for a long time now, but I was an idiot and I didnât realize it until just recentlyâ She said through her sobs, Luke forgot how to breathe, playing her words over and over again âWhen I found your present and looked through it I realized itâs you, it has been you all along, Luke, youâre my personâ
Luke didnât waste no time and kissed her, feeling his heart being mend with every second that passed, when they pulled away, he asked âWhat about Sam?â
âHeâs been out of the picture for monthsâ She admitted and Luke resumed their kiss only to pull apart immediately.
âYouâre my person, Penelope, always have, always willâ He choked out.
âI love you, Lukeâ She caressed his face in her hands.
Luke closed her eyes, her words giving him a joy he didnât knew existed âI love you too, PenelopeâÂ
âSo⌠Can I stay?â She chuckled through her tears.
âOnly if you stay foreverâ Luke answered and took her in his arms, planning to make up for all the lost time where he wasnât able to show her how much he loved her.
âHome, let me come home, home is wherever Iâm with youâÂ

Octopath Traveler Combat Review
Hello whoeverâs reading this, Iâm here to talk about Octopath Travelerâs combat system, and how it sucks. Now you might be wondering, why am I writing about this now, isnât that game kind of old at this point? Yes, it is, but I only âfinishedâ playing recently since I was working off of a borrowed copy and itâs more the level of disappointment I felt while playing it has stuck with me much more than many other games Iâve played. Since I want to go into game design and development, I thought that it would be good practice to do a deep dive on game mechanics, and itâs easier to write about something that I have strong feelings about to start with. While I have many issues with Octopath, the combat system is what the player is dealing with the most (which in itself is an issue), so the fact that it was lackluster dropped the enjoyability of the game more than if it were better balanced with story and exploration. Iâll try to hit everything that I had a gripe with, from minor things I personally would want changed, to what I view as major flaws that lower the enjoyment for everyone. I will be talking about the post-game boss, because a lot of my issues come into focus during it, so spoiler warning.
For reference, Iâll be talking about the game the way I played it, so Iâll give my main character loadouts in relation to the final boss. Team 1: Hunter Therion, Cleric Alfyn, Sorceror Cyrus, and Thief Olberic; Team 2: Warlord Hâannit, Scholar Ophelia, Apothecary Primrose, and Runelord Tressa.
Now the big overarching problem with this game is its simplicity. Making a game simple can be a good thing, and definitely makes it more accessible, but there are a plethora of sub issues that I will be going into throughout this caused by how oversimplified many systems are in this game. For starters there is the lack of skill diversity, as in, there just isnât very much that characters and enemies do over the course of the game. The offensive skills have 12 possible damage types, 6 weapons (Phys) and 6 elemental (Elem) and thereâs only really 4 different ways these are implemented: single hit, multi hit, wide (hits all enemies) hit, and wide multi hit. Multi hits are generally just better due to the break system and damage limits, and wide hits are better the more enemies there are. Those of you good with numbers might have already multiplied those to get 48 ways of hitting an enemy, and Iâll add two, since the Merchant has an single hit untyped skill and the Starseer has a wide untyped skill, for a grand total of 50 that I can remember. Looking at that number I actually donât know if that looks like a lot for somebody who hasnât played the game, but the damage types only really matter in the break mechanic of the game and which stat is used for calculating damage. No particular type of damage is better for damage or accuracy skill wise, and the elem skills will do the exact same thing no matter which element is used since theyâre only based on the userâs Mag stat. Phys attacks are a bit different since each one is affected by the weapon the user has equipped for that type, but theyâre generally all +Str and then +Mag / +Acc / +Crit / +Spd / +Eva. Some Phys skills also have side effects that help differentiate between them, but the basic attacks are the same when the weapons are similar.
Since I brought it up, letâs talk about the two main mechanics of combat that this game has, the break and boost systems. Overall, these systems are pretty good on their own, and most of my issues are rather small here. First up is the break system: hit the opponent with their weaknesses a number of times, and they lose any remaining moves they have this turn, any they would take on the next turn, and all attacks against them deal more damage, though on the turn after the next, they are guaranteed to move first. This is where most of the fun of the game is, figuring out the enemyâs weaknesses, as they are hidden when you first encounter an enemy, only revealed when the weakness is hit, or with the Analyze skill, and then timing the breaks to be the most beneficial to your team. Many enemies belonged to groups with similar weaknesses, so itâs interesting to learn like winged creatures are generally weak to wind and / or spear attacks. The main problem I have with the break system is that once an enemy is broken, all damage types have the same effectiveness. Before being broken, an enemy that is weak to fire will take extra damage than if itâs hit with an ice attack, but while broken these attacks will do the same damage. Any accuracy bonuses donât matter, since you canât miss an attack on a broken enemy and speed bonuses only really matter if the order in which skills are cast is important, which there are some cases, usually with buffing allies. Then a bit smaller is how the weakness bar is always ordered, so some damage types are more useful to figure out all of the weaknesses. For example, if a weakness to staves is the leftmost weakness to be found, the player knows that there are no other physical weaknesses and to just start trying elemental ones. There were also some interesting extra mechanics that were only used a few times, such as shuffling weaknesses after a break, or, one mechanic used exactly once in phase 1 of the final boss, rotating through weaknesses when being attacked.
Then we get to the boost system, which complements the break system very well, with only minor annoyances. It makes the player decide between spending power against an unbroken opponent to break them faster, save up to deal massive damage to an opponent once they break, or how frequently turns need to be spent to cast buffs or debuffs. One issue that I have here is that magic users get the short end of the stick again, as basic attacks are the only moves (besides Bewildering Dance, the RNG move) that boosting will cause more instances of the move to occur. Boosting three times on somebody that will basic attack an enemy can cause them to lose 4 shields, while doing the same on a fire skill will just cause it to do more damage, which is objectively better to do when the enemy is broken. This usually isnât an issue, as the BP can be spent on status effects and healing which will always be helpful, so besides Cyrus (laugh at him, heâs a nerd) thereâs always something to spend BP on, thought your personal playstyle might dictate otherwise. Something thatâs more personally annoying is how the limit is 5 BP max per character, since the most you can use is 3 per turn. What would be really nice and satisfying would be to break an opponent, have everybody spend 3 BP for full boosted whatever on the break turn, and then have everybody spend another 3 BP on fully boosted whatever else on the second break turn.
Next is another facet of the simple problem, is that there is significantly less character variability than the game wants you to think, and thatâs not much in the first place. There are only 96 total skills for player characters, as there are 12 jobs with 8 skills each, and each character has their default job and may also equip a secondary job, letting each character go into battle with 16 skills, ignoring the path actions that grant others conditionally. The 8 base jobs can be simplified into 2 categories, DPS and Utility, 3 if you want to split the utilities into physical and elemental which I see as reasonable, or if you want to stretch it and split the 2 DPSs in the same way. Iâll stick with 3 since I can show how to best simplify them this way, watch. DPS: multiple damage type skills; Phys Utility: one weapon type set of skills, one single target elem skill, and a couple (de)buffs; Elem Utility: a single target elem skill, a wide elem skill, and a bunch of buffs. The advanced classes are even simpler, three of them being every attack type in either weapons or elements and then the remaining one being a bunch of buffs with one multi element skill so that every element had 5 related skills. Iâm debating going into each individual job, but there are two that I will be getting into later for sure, Thief and Starseer, for opposite reasons.
Related to the lack of damage types and skills, is a lack of feeling of progression throughout the game. You gain access to 66% of the skills you will ever have by the end of the first quarter of the game, and the last 33% you wonât get until about the last quarter of the game. While the beginning of the a game it makes sense to give the players a bunch of tools rapidly, especially given the whole theme of versatility of the 8 different starting characters the game is based around, skills just scale up with the playerâs stats, given through levels and equipment, otherwise they stay the same. While the middle half of the game can be used to mix and match secondary jobs on characters, itâs all just variations on the familiar. While this lack of progression just makes the game a bit boring until you start finding the advanced jobs, the actual issue is how SP scales through the game. The game ends up getting significantly easier as you progress further into the game since the SP costs become a smaller percentage of each characterâs SP pools, and most forms of SP regeneration are percentage based, so characters get back SP easier too. For example, I had Ophelia with Second Wind (which I will get to in detail later) and a bunch of SP equipment, which by mid-game meant she could cast most spells and heal back more SP than they cost, and late-game everything was free outside of revive, which took two turns to fully heal. This is contrast to the beginning of the game, where a single skill cast could deplete a characterâs entire SP pool, especially the physical jobs, as they usually came with smaller SP pools in the first place.
But where the runaway scaling is the worst, is actually on the thief job. Thief is a physical utility class, so it comes with dagger skills, the mandatory single hit fire skill, phys str and def debuffs, and some slightly more interesting abilities that falloff as the game goes on and you donât need items or SP as much. All three dagger skills have special qualities, the divine skill uses the characters spd in the damage calculation, but HP Thief and Steal SP are the really broken ones. They both function the same way, hit twice with the dagger, then recover some percentage of the damage dealt to the stat in the name, 50% to HP or 5% to SP. The cost is also the same for each, 6 SP. There seemed to be a bit of a decrease in accuracy for each compared to just basic attacking with a dagger, so early on it was a bit of a risk to use it on enemies, especially if they were unbroken and not weak to daggers, as you would be losing SP to gain 30 health, or getting two dagger hits without boosting. But then, once the total damage of both hits reached 120, or even if you wanted to be safer, the damage of either hit, you start having a move that is free to use and hits more times than a basic attack without using BP, while also being able to heal yourself in a pinch. Now, the max damage you can deal in one hit without the Surpassing Power is 9,999, and you can very clearly see that a thief becomes an invincible slaughterer, as one can either heal themself for 9,999 HP, which is the max, or 999 SP, which is also the max, per turn. Now this might take a bit of set up, such as decreasing the enemyâs physical defense, which I remember mentioning is an ability that the thief job has, or increasing the thiefâs physical strength, and there are a few ways to do that, but what Iâm saying is itâs pretty much just all lined up for you to do way too easily with next to no drawbacks.
Iâve mentioned two support skills by now, so I should probably talk about them and the issues that they have. Thereâs 4 for every job, so 48 total, and each character has 4 slots that they can have support skills assigned to with no job related restrictions. This theoretically is about 200000 combinations, but since many support skills donât synergize well with either the other ones or with the character or just are worse than others, thereâs actually a lot less. The first way the options are culled are through support skills that are basically required. First on that list of required ones is that everybody needs Saving Grace, full stop. It changes the equipped characterâs max HP from what is listed to 9,999, though if their HP is above their listed max, they canât be healed any further until they have returned to a normal HP level. This gets very important for many late game bosses, and I feel like every paragraph is opening another two or more topics to go to, as most characterâs 2k~3k isnât enough. After that is some form of SP assistance, as the support skills are the ones with all the fancy %SP recovery. Thereâs 4 options to choose from: % max heal, heal % basic attack damage done, halve all SP costs, and heal % damage taken. Your magic casters will generally get the % max heal, since they have large mana pools to take advantage of that, and your DPSs will have the basic damage one, with much smaller mana pools and higher physical attack damage. Anyone with the Thief class can skip this, since as Iâve said, they will never run out of mana anyways. The % damage taken isnât particularly useful as itâs such a small percentage and much less reliable than the others given itâs based on the enemyâs actions and targeting rather than yours. The Halve SP costs skill is situational, as some classes have higher SP costs, but losing the ability to actually regenerate SP makes the longer (and usually harder) fights more dangerous as you still run the risk of running out of mana. I used it on Tressa, since I played her as a caster and her mana pool is a bit lower than the other main casters, plus her Rest ability allows her to regain SP on her own. Third is either of the stat buff skills, once again the choice is based on how the character will be dealing damage. Thereâs Physical Prowess for Phys attack and defense or Elemental Edge for Elem attack and defense, and instead of being a stat boost like other similar skills from base jobs is that they permanently grant the combat buff to those stats, which means you donât need to spend time casting the skills that do that AND that they canât be dispelled by the enemy. What you do with the last slot (or two for thieves) is more open and is going to be where you can have ideas about different builds.
For me though, that last slot went to Surpassing Power on most characters, because by late game, most of my characters were hitting the damage limit pretty easily. Now the damage limit is just the fact that no single attack can deal more than 9,999 damage, because the developers said so. The support skill Surpassing Power, similar to Saving Grace, ignores that, and instead makes the max 99,999, though have fun trying to reach that before your characterâs stats max out. Octopath unfortunately has a lot of these kind of arbitrary limits which only seem to exist to highlight an ability that can get around it, like purple treasure chests and Therionâs job ability. By the time I got to the post game boss 5 of my characters were consistently hitting the damage limit, and due to the sometimes absurd amounts of health that opponents had, Surpassing Power just made most of those fights so much faster.
Now a bit of time talking about enemies, because the difficulty scaling of the game is pretty boring, once again due to how simple the game is. This is really an issue among a lot of this type of RPG, since the game is just a numbers game and bigger numbers = harder fights. Thereâs two points specifically that make Octopath particularly bad with this, the lack of weaknesses on player characters, and enemy health. Since the player characters donât have any weaknesses like enemies do, you really donât have to pay attention to what specifically the opponent is doing, at most you can pay attention to whether you are taking physical or elemental damage, but the types are completely irrelevant. Thereâs a slight exception since there are accessories that reduce specific types of elemental damage, but as far as I could tell it was just better to use accessories that gave stat bonuses. Some enemies had abilities that could inflict status ailments, or had secondary abilities similar to player skills, but they were so few and far between that once again it doesnât really contribute much. The other issue is with enemyâs health, in that they generally have way too much and causes the game to become so much slower. Fighting basic enemies is almost never a danger to your team assuming you are properly equipped, but the fights can still drag on for 5~10 minutes just whittling down their health. This even applies to fighting enemies that are much lower level than your own team, mostly due to the defensive bonuses that an enemy that hasnât been broken has. This culminates to a final boss with about 700,000 HP, ignoring all the summons that it has and that it canât take damage while the summons exist. Again remember that the maximum damage per hit is 9,999 in most cases and 99,999 in the other (which Iâve never gotten close to even with max offensive stats). Then also add in that you probably wonât be anywhere near that first max damage unless the boss is broken too, and you can see why the fights just take so long.
Ok, time to talk about the other job that particularly stood out to me, the Starseer. Itâs a healing support job mostly focused around manipulating the partyâs BP. Or at least the good skills it has are focused around BP. The divine skill is a wide untyped elemental attack dealing damage based around the whole teamâs BP stock, and one of its utility skills also increases damage when the user uses BP, which you have to for divine skills. Another skill it has increases the BP gain of an ally to two per turn, rather than one. Unfortunately weâre already starting to get into the ok skill territory, as due to the way BP is gained, it is only useful for about half of the duration. After a character uses BP, they donât gain any for the next turn, and since the max is 5 BP, there can only ever be two turns in a row where you benefit from this, and depending on support skills, the maximum benefit a character can get from this ability is an additional 4 â 6 BP. Now there is a Merchant skill that can give another character 4 BP instantly for the exact same cost. The rest of the skills range from decent but situational to worse versions of other job skills, and remember, Starseer is a secret job, meaning you donât start with access to it, all the abilities are relatively expensive, and you have to fight a boss to unlock it. Continuing to a decent but situational skill is one that can target either enemies or allies, and prevents all stat buffs from being able to be applied to an enemy or prevents all stat debuffs from being able to be applied to an ally. If you know the enemy is a type to be able to apply either, this can be helpful if you can time it properly. The other skills of the job are mostly more expensive and / or worse versions of skills that other jobs have. From dealing multiple types of damage (worse than just 1 in 95% of cases) to healing over time (enemyâs damage considerably outpaces the healing it provides) to a counter that doesnât prevent the damage like its counterpart, pretty much every active skill they have is disappointing.
I ran out of steam on that last paragraph, and stopped writing this for about 3 months, so Iâll just get one last point in. There are actually a lot of mechanics in the game that are kind of complicated, but since this game is about oversimplification, much of the most important nuance that the game actually has is hidden from the player. There are a ton of little bits of information that would make decision making in the game so much easier, but because the game refuses to display them, thereâs a lot of guesswork. In some cases, this hidden information is obfuscating mechanics that subvert player expectations, so what they thought was an easy decision should actually be harder. The following is a non-comprehensive list of some of the worst offenders of hiding information in my opinion. The stat nuts, which raise character stats permanently, give different amounts of their stat depending on which character eats it. Moves that hit a random amount of times ignore all bonuses and penalties to accuracy and evasion. Items that reduce damage or recover HP/SP donât say by how much, or whether it is percentage or a flat number. Healing skills scale with the casterâs elemental defense. What makes these and similar mechanics the most annoying is that there are some skills that do list exact numbers or percentages for their effects, so it is inconsistent too.
I will end this now and hopefully I covered everything I meant to. A lot of this was thought up while mowing the lawn or laying in bed trying to get to sleep so if something was lost in the recesses of my mind thatâs unfortunate. I hope whoever made it all the way down here enjoyed reading, or at least thought it was interesting, and feel free to reach out to me if youâd like to hear more.
