I see all of the “Astarion was a nepo baby and got his position through favoritism” takes, and while I agree, let me do you one better.

He did get his position through nepotism—logical, especially given elven age perception. And at first he didn’t take it seriously and simply enjoyed the power and status it afforded him. And then he started to figure out he was really good at politics and finessing the legal system, and that he legitimately enjoyed the law studies that skill promoted him to take on.

This inevitably leads to his contemporaries liking him even less than when he was just their spoiled child to babysit, because he’s got an instinctive mind for politics that they can’t help but admit he has and now they’re all being embarrassed by him.
