Introduction to Watercolors Class Recap

These watercolorists are rocking it! I’m so pleased by how open they are to expanding their comfort zones when learning to paint with such a tricky medium. I couldn’t be more proud!

Let’s take a look at their awesomeness! The left column was their homework assignment and the right column was their classwork from last night. Stunning!

We packed quite a bit in to last night’s class, focusing on a bit of color theory, how to create complimentary color shadows using the color wheel and our class project was a contour line drawing where we filled in the negative space with our selection of warm colors. We also used a few other little magical techniques on our backgrounds to give them fabulous texture!

It’s such a joy to work with these folks and I look forward to seeing them for our last class next week, where we will paint 6 various landscapes. Can’t wait!

The Three Txentx Factions

When txentxkind was offered the choice to officially join the Milky Way Celestial Community, it was during a bad time: an emissary of the MWCC had recently interfered in their homeworld politics, with mildly disastrous results. Society split into three political parties, depending on their opinion on joining.

These are the official seals symbolizing each group as drawn by someone with a less-than-perfect sense of symmetry. The “purple maple leaf” is a stylized txentx tongue-bud, and the pale four-fingered hands are the hands of the MWCC’s current leader (used to represent the organization as a whole).

Kaxtege

Stance: Anti-joining. Hostile towards MWCC leaders. They’re interested in interacting with other civilizations, but they don’t want it to be on the MWCC’s terms. Unfortunately, the MWCC sort of walls off civilizations who don’t agree to be part of them.

The other two factions see them as unhinged war-seekers.

Extra symbolism notes: The spear / pole arm-type weapons on the seal are purely metaphorical, txentx would obviously not be using them in interstellar combat lol.

Gytege

Stance: Pro-joining. Believes the MWCC as a whole should be forgiven for their emissary’s mistake. Perpetually trying to a) get an audience with the MWCC leaders and b) make the Kaxtege and Vutege just shut up already.

The other two factions see them as way too trusting for their own good.

Vutege

Stance: Anti-joining. They believe that it’s too much trouble for txentx to get involved with other civilizations at all, at least at the present moment. Known for throwing huge festivals to “keep people from getting bored with their world”.

The other two factions see them as deeply unserious.

Vigo was deemed the Spanish city with the highest quality of life

Vigo, which was previously recognized as the city with the best quality of life in Spain, has now been surpassed by Pamplona according to a ranking compiled by the MWCC. In a study conducted by the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) last May, Vigo was deemed the Spanish city with the highest quality of life in terms of mobility, public safety, healthcare services, educational services, cultural offerings, and more. The study also took into account factors such as recreational activities, sports, pollution levels, the job market, cost of living, real estate market, and cleanliness in the city.

However, the MWCC, which stands for Madrid World Capital of Architecture, Engineering, and Construction, has recently released a report using data from Numbeo, the world's largest collaborative database of countries and cities. According to this report, Pamplona has now been crowned as the city with the best quality of life in Spain. Residents of Pamplona also consider it to be the most affordable city and the third safest in the country.

The ranking is based on six indicators: purchasing power and cost of living, affordable housing, environment, safety, health, and transportation. Pamplona, the capital of Navarra, emerged as the city with the highest quality of life in Spain. Following closely behind Pamplona is Logroño, with Oviedo, Santander, Burgos, and Valencia also making it to the top of the list. The analysis also revealed that Cartagena is the most affordable city in Spain, while Cáceres offers the most affordable housing prices for both buying and renting. In terms of climate, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Ceuta, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife were identified as the cities with the best weather, while Valencia boasts better transportation connections. Finally, according to the ranking, the cities with the best healthcare assistance, in order, are Palma, Oviedo, and Cartagena.

Introduction to Watercolors Class Recap

It’s always so much fun to meet new people when I host the Introduction to Watercolors classes in my studio through Mount Wachusett Community College. The first class is always my favorite because it’s all about getting to know the students, where they’re from, what they enjoy for hobbies and that sort of thing. The 3 weeks that we spend together often feels like it goes by in a blink so I enjoy getting to know them and watch them emerge as watercolorists!

Last night was the first of 3 sessions that I’ve got booked up for MWCC. Classes are small in size (about 5 students plus me) so that we can have a quieter setting and I can gauge who needs help with what. Since this class often books up pretty quickly, I’ve worked with MWCC to offer it for 3 weeks in the months of September, October and November so that we can offer it to more folks.

Our first class yesterday evening, we were able to chat and get to know each other for a bit before diving into the paints. We learned about various types of techniques that are popular with watercolorists, such as wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, blotting, etc. We also used various types of household items to create different effects with our watercolors, like sea salt, plastic wrap, bubble wrap and crayon resist. It’s always so much fun to see how the students react to using some of these materials to create the textures. It’s also a fun way to learn how much water to use, when to increase the amount of paint used and that sort of thing.

After our initial project of textures and techniques, we put that to work with creating a landscape using the various items to create textures. Some folks liked the salt while others liked the crayon resist. It’s all a matter of personal taste and like I say during every class, there are no mistakes that can’t be fixed up and it’s only paper afterall.

Next week we will be working on color stories, warms vs. cools and creating three more projects. And before you ask, yes, they do have homework to work on between classes. Not that we grade it! But to keep the practice up during the week and keep the students engaged with their watercolors and encouraging their comfort and experience.

Stardust also finished her Field Championship on Sunday. She is now a Dual Champion.
