Day 15 - MC Hammer Stanley Kirk Burrell, born March 30, 1962, known professionally as MC Hammer, is a Black / African American rapper, dancer, record producer and entrepreneur. @mchammer brought rap music to a mainstream audience with his album 'Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em,' still one the biggest-selling rap album of all time. MC Hammer is one, if not, the most influential artists in the 90s. From the parachute pants, shades, open shirts, and gold chains to the parts in his hightop fade and ducktail. Hammer was something that shifted the culture! A rapper with energy in his rhymes and dancing that came in a time when “gangsta” rap was at its peak! If you were born in the mid 80s, you were doing the hammer dance (especially for your parents friends in the night). Hammer’s impact has influenced: @thesimpsons , The Humpty Dance, @sesamestreet “MC Elmo”, dozens of rappers, and video games so much more! MC Hammer began his performing career as a young boy dancing outside the Oakland Coliseum during Oakland A's games. He dreamed of playing professional baseball, Hammer never turned his back on music. While working for the A's, he adopted the moniker "MC," for "Master of Ceremonies," and performed at various clubs when the A's traveled out of town. It was also during this time that he acquired the nickname "Hammer," for his resemblance to home-run king Hank "The Hammer" Aaron. Burrell became a preacher during the late 1990s with a Christian ministry program on TBN called M.C. Hammer and Friends. Additionally, he starred in a Saturday-morning cartoon called Hammerman in 1991 and was executive producer of his own reality show called Hammertime, which aired on the A&E Network during the summer of 2009. At the 40th @amas in November 2012, Hammer danced to a mashup of #GangnamStyle and #2Legit2Quit along with South #Korean #popstar @42psy42 , both wearing his signature Hammer pants. The collaboration was released on @itunes. #blackhistorymonth #Day15 #EverythangCulture #Podcast #Black #Excellence #Honor #Remember #Learn #Listen #Unity #Culture #Heritage #Leaders #Love #MusicCultureMonday #HipHop #Dance #PopCulture #Legend #HammerTime #MCHammer #Flowers (at Seattle, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/CLU6bdqJ-HM/?utm_medium=tumblr

Day 8 - Marian Anderson Marian Anderson (1902-1993) is remembered as one of the best American contraltos of all time. She was the first African American singer to perform at the White House and also the first African American to sing with New York's Metropolitan Opera. She performed a wide range of music, from opera to spirituals. Anderson performed with renowned orchestras in major concert and recital venues throughout the United States and Europe between 1925 and 1965. Anderson was an important figure in the struggle for African-American artists to overcome racial prejudice in the United States during the mid-twentieth century. In 1939 during the era of racial segregation, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) refused to allow Anderson to sing to an integrated audience in Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. The incident placed Anderson in the spotlight of the international community on a level unusual for a classical musician. With the aid of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and her husband President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Anderson performed a critically acclaimed open-air concert on Easter Sunday, April 9, 1939, on the Lincoln Memorial steps in the capital. She sang before an integrated crowd of more than 75,000 people and a radio audience in the millions. #blackhistorymonth #Day8 #EverythangCulture #Podcast #Black #Excellence #Honor #Remember #Learn #Listen #Grow #Unity #CivilRights #Culture #Heritage #Leaders #Education #Art #Love #MusicCultureMonday #Opera #singer (at Seattle, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/CLD3QkhpxTy/?utm_medium=tumblr

Day 22 - Harry Belafonte Multi-talented actor and musician @theharrybelafonte was the first Black (Jamaican American) performer to win an Emmy Award and the first recording artist to sell over a million copies of an album, though he was doubtlessly most proud of his longstanding work as an activist in international fights against racism, violence and world hunger. Harry Belafonte joined the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s. He became one of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s closest confidants. Over the years he organized demonstrations, raised money and contributed his personal funds to keep movement activities going. Belafonte has advocated for a range of other humanitarian causes. In 1985, he helped to orchestrate the recording of the Grammy Award winning song "We Are The World," a multi-artist effort to raise funds for Africa. In 1987, he received an appointment to @UNICEF as a goodwill ambassador. Belafonte has been involved in prostate cancer advocacy since 2006. Belafonte was born in as born March 1, 1927 Harlem in 1927, but lived with his grandmother in a wooden house on stilts in Aboukir, a mountain village in Jamaica, for a good chunk of his childhood. Belafonte got his start in New York theater, but his sideline as a nightclub singer propelled his mainstream breakout when his 1954 album Calypso popularized the music of his Jamaican heritage and hit number one on the charts. A respected authority on international folk music and a world-touring performer, Belafonte also enjoyed a career as an actor and producer, where he was involved in important early African-American productions including "Carmen Jones" (1954), in which he starred alongside Dorothy Dandridge, and Lorraine Hansberry's landmark play "To Be Young, Gifted, and Black," which he produced. Belafonte’s wisdom and contribution to the world is recognized and appreciated here with @EverythangCulture #ThankYou #blackhistorymonth #Day22 #EverythangCulture #Podcast #Black #Excellence #Honor #Remember #Learn #Listen #Grow #Unity #Culture #Heritage #Leaders #Love #MusicCultureMonday #CivilRights #Jamaican #PopCulture #Legend #Calypso #DayO #Activism https://www.instagram.com/p/CLm4er7JYek/?igshid=462m6v72tkwc

#MusicCultureMonday 𝐂𝐡𝐮𝐜𝐤 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧 “The Godfather of GoGo” Born: August 22nd, 1936 Gaston, NC #ChuckBrown is the undisputed sole founder and creator #GoGo music, a hypnotically danceable genre deeply rooted in funk and soul that he developed in the early 70’s , and the only form of expressive culture to originate in the District of Columbia. Foreshadowing rap and many of the major popular #RnB styles of the past three decades, Chuck's signature style earned him a place in American musical royalty. This esteem was maintained by the reputation of his legendary live shows, heavy on audience participation and built around “the beat” to create an unparalleled non-stop party atmosphere. In the 1950s, Brown was incarcerated and served eight years in Lorton Correctional Complex. In prison, he traded cigarettes for a guitar, which was how his love for the instrument began. When Brown completed his sentence, he moved back to Washington, D.C. and worked as a truck driver, a bricklayer, and a sparring partner at multiple boxing gyms. He also started to perform at parties throughout the area; however, he could not play at venues that served liquor, because his probation officer would not allow it. Brown's musical career began in the 1960s playing guitar with Jerry Butler and The Earls of Rhythm, joining #LosLatinos in 1965. At the time of his death (May 16, 2012) he was still performing music and was well known in the Washington, D.C., area. Brown's early hits include "We Need Some Money" and "Bustin' Loose". #BustinLoose has been adopted by the #WashingtonNationals baseball team as its home run celebration song, and was interpolated by @nelly for his 2002 number one hit "Hot in Herre." Brown is considered a local legend in Washington, D.C., and has appeared in television advertisements for the Washington Post and other area companies. I may have been sleep on @inglewoodsir but we’re up now! I was scrolling @twitter when I saw artwork of black “King of the Hill” characters. I hit play and the beat caught me in a trance (high hats and that first guitar rift). Then next week the full video dropped and #wow! SiR’s vocals slowly poured into his song John Redcorn. The lyrics are beautiful and it makes you feel empathy for the (anti)protagonist on the track. I then started listening to his music on @spotify and I’m hooked. From Hair Down w/ @kendricklamar , D’Evils (I’ve actually heard before but didn’t know the artist), You Can’t Save Me, and Ohh Nahh Nahh w/ @masego (we’ll discuss him another week 😉). He is a bit of history on SiR for our #MusicCultureMonday Sir Darryl Farris (born November 5, 1986), is an American singer, songwriter and record producer from Inglewood, California. He is signed to @topdawgent Sir Darryl Farris grew up in a musical family with his mother, brothers, and cousin being gospel singers in Inglewood. He earned a degree in recording arts at the Los Angeles Film School and developed his songwriting, arranging, and production skills. His mother was a backup singer for Michael Jackson and Anita Baker, and his uncle Andrew Gouche was a bassist for Prince. SiR joined a songwriting group called #WoodWorks with his brothers and his cousin @tiffanygouche who wrote songs for @officialjaheim and The Pussycat Dolls. He landed a job engineering for @tyrese 2012 while quietly developing his craft as a songwriter. SiR went on to work with Anita Baker @ginuwine @anderson._paak @missjillscott , and @steviewonderlegacy . Give him a listen! With this much talent it’s a must! #TDE #GreatMusic #Soul #RnB #everythangculture #podcast #listen #talent #kingofthehill #johnredcorn #sir #artwork #music #blackpodcasts #blackpodcastnetwork #follow https://www.instagram.com/p/CAV4hYXAwYu/?igshid=sqv2jbxo9k5x
