GIVE ME FUTURE: MAJOR LAZER’S HISTORICAL CUBAN FESTIVAL Documentary
It was March 6, 2016, and the power of music, freedom, and love took the country of Cuba to the mountaintop. Electronic band Major Lazer traveled to the Caribbean island and played the show of their careers for the youth of Cuba. A concert of love, unity, and appreciation in the countries capital, Havana. The experience was put into a documentary film called Give Me Future. Major Lazer’s single, Know No Better, is on rBeatzRadio.
It has been years since a huge international artist has performed on Cuban soil, but when it comes to the youth of the world and exposing them to much more than their daily routine, it becomes artists responsibility to feed and nurture the musical souls of the world.
At the time when our United States and Cuba’s relationship began to change for the better, Major Lazer’s managers took action at developing this concert. Fabien Papani, the concert producer (Musicabana), was a key part and the link between the Cuban government and Major Lazers team. Without him, his work, and A+ effort this historic event wouldn’t have taken place. One particularly interesting part was the location of the concert. Held at the legendary US Interests Section (the now U.S. Embassy), it was ironic to learn that a concert of freedom and equality took place where protests and rallies and even protests against concerts by The Anti Imperialist Tribunal happened. A step closer into the right direction for a brighter future we all wish for.
Since the whole purpose of this performance was to bring love and peace and positivity between not only nations but between the souls that enjoy music on this island, the concert was free of charge. With an aim at representing the world with their music, Major Lazer represents different parts of the world together. Three gentlemen who love music and love unifying their love for music as one collective. Seeing a band built on unifying inspires the rest of us to seek that much needing unification within ourselves and each other.  A band that offers more than a DJ set but a full-fledged artistic performance centered around joy, celebration, and the freedom for musical expression.
Sharing all of their material from music to videos and whatever in between with Damian, that was when and where the team learned about, The Paquete. A supreme service made by the people for the people. Cuba is a country far behind on their access to the internet, but ingenious and practical ideas by one man and his team have made worldly knowledge accessible and important to the country. Dany Cabrera Garcia is the young man who produces the Paquete Semanal. Taking a one terabyte hard drive updated every week with information from around the world, Dany and the Cuban people have worked at staying up to date with the latest news. Infomation from music to television and movies, The Paquete is a leading producer and a bridge to the world. In order to prevent being shut down, The Paquete delivers no pornography or politics. If you want to know what connecting people to each other is like then think of The Paquete. With that level of intention and effort, they deserve all that they strive for. Another major leader in Cuban social changes is Iliam Suarez from the electronic duo I.A. She also runs the music festival for electronic music in Cuba called Proelectranica. Major Lazer had to include her in their show and celebrate the electronic music that comes from Cuba. Major Lazers’ support of local small artists is exactly what this industry needs more of. Another addition they added to the show was Adonis and Osain Del Monte. The leading man of the classic Rumba band. They fight to keep the love and spirit of Rumba music alive. With the admiration of his son, Adonis, Adonis Sr is one proud and elated father. The Cuban government has strict policies and structure in their public affairs so when the denial of bringing on stage rapper Yotuel of the Cuban rap group Orishas it was unfortunate but no surprise. There is always a struggle when fighting for self-actualization and freedom of expression but finding your inner strength, no obstacle is unbeatable.
It’s a beautiful thing, the beauty of people and this moving documentary grants us the opportunity to witness pure joy and comradery in human nature. Cuba has thriving life and Major Lazer shined a light on it. They promote positivity by spreading passion and friendship, “Making the world smaller by making the party bigger” – Walshy Fire. Major Lazer took that passion to Cuba. It’s a happy film and it’s apparent how Major Lazer extended their happiness to the island. The people absorbed every bit of it and manifested in the glory of love, all 400,000 of them. When you learn you have all the power to make this world a better place for you and every being in it, how could you not?
On the soundtrack, you will find tracks from and inspired by the film. From Diplo, Jillionaire, Walshy Fire, I.A., Adonis, Orishas, and Osain Del Monte.
