The Deceiver (a pretty cool name for a mushroom in my opinion)
Also known as the Laccaria Laccata
Tumblr media
A common woodland species often occurring in large troops (groups). The cap is flat or "slightly depressed", pinky-brown, drying paler. It has a granular central region and a striated edge when moist. The gills are flesh-coloured adnate to slightly decurrent, thick and widely spaced. The stem is thin, fibrous and often flattened.
Tumblr media
It is edible. However, it is lacking in flavour.
Similar species/ it is closely related to: L. Proxima and L. Bicolor

So you may have seen my posts about AI foraging guides, or watched the mini-class I have up on YouTube on what I found inside of them. Apparently the intersection of AI and foraging has gotten even worse, with a chatbot that joined a mushroom foraging groups on Facebook only to immediately suggest ways people could cook a toxic species:
Tumblr media
First, and most concerningly, this once again reinforces how much we should NOT be trusting AI to tell us what mushrooms are safe to eat. While they can compile information that's fed to them and regurgitate it in somewhat orderly manners, this is not the same as a living human being who has critical thinking skills to determine the veracity of a given piece of information, or physical senses to examine a mushroom, or the ability to directly experience the act of foraging. These skills and experiences are absolutely crucial to being a reliable forager, particularly one who may be passing on information to others.
We already have enough trouble with inaccurate info in the foraging community, and trying to ride herd on both the misinformed and the bad actors. This AI was presented as the first chat option for any group member seeking answers, which is just going to make things tougher for those wanting to keep people from accidentally poisoning themselves. Moreover, chatbots like this one routinely are trained on and grab information from copyrighted sources, but do not give credit to the original authors. Anyone who's ever written a junior-high level essay knows that you have to cite your sources even if you rewrite the information; otherwise it's just plagiarism.
Fungi Friend is yet one more example of how generative AI has been anything but a positive development on multiple levels.

Rades transferred Patry's soul into a new body that didn't actually belong to him. Does that mean he can transfer souls into any living object?

#actually rather pleased with my Bronze Age abstract#Advisor is going to demolish the Other one but that's okay because I at least did something so I got the practice and I can sleep now.#It's kind of funny I was writing the Bronze Age one and I can already feel the struggle of compressing a dissertation's worth#of information into 15 minutes. Like ffs I'm supposed to speedrun oil as an extraction reductant and also talk about Egypt's alum trade?#But this is My Fault. I have done this to myself.#Okay but I'm already bubbling with excitement to talk about Leather Tanning again. Nobody was here when I went on this massive#5 hour long rabbit hole of leather tanning research because... I think I was trying to find out if you could use mushroom collagen#to replicate leather? (The answer is yes.) But it took me down this road of Leather tanning because I was trying to understand the#ion exchange that makes it supple and TLDR there's this massive exploitative industry in the Middle East and Southeast Asia that uses#Cobalt salts because the Co 3+ sits really nicely in the collagen site and you can quickly dye and destroy most of the organics from the#animal itself; but because of that you've also destroyed the texture of the leather. I forget why Al 3+ isn't used. I think it's because it#weathers over time and the leather becomes stiff and hard again. Same with Fe3+. ANYWAY. Try and find thick leather when you#do buy leather because leather IS great and I will die(dye) on this hill. But it's the exploitative textile industry that causes problems.#Honestly I've forgotten 90% of the chemistry but it's so fucking cool and a really interesting peek into an organic affected by inorganics#rather than affecting an inorganic mineral with organics. UGH I love chemistry so much. It's so fucking cool.#ptxt#christ this might be my worst tag essay lol

The parasol (macrolepiota procera)
Tumblr media
When young, it is shaped like an egg on a stick but the mature cap is flat, apart from a raised, dark-brown central region that is surrounded bu rings of flat brown scales on a cream background. It has dry, creamy-white gills. The long, hollow stem tapers from a swollen base and bears faint snake-like markings below the movable double ring.
Edible: excellent nutty taste. Discard stem and fry the cap whole, coated in breadcrumbs.

Further into the tangle, the Sun-Kissed Polymath calls you over, a drink in his hand. "Real stuff, from the Surface," he says, pouring you a glass. "None of your mushroom swill. I'm planning on going back up, one day soon." He grins. "The information I've sent back up should buy me a nice villa at home."
And where is home, exactly?

Earthy powder cap (cystoderma amianthinum)
Tumblr media
Similar to the small lepiotas, e.g. stinking dapperling, but with gills attached to the stem. The thin-fleshed, ochre-yellow cap has a granular surface and a shaggy edge. It has adnate, creamy-white gills. The slender, cap-coloured stem is unusual in that the lower region (below the shaggy, often incomplete ring) is covered with tiny scales. It has an earthy smell.
Inedible - not worthwhile.
