For so long, his face had been associated with safety and happiness. His arms were a safe haven, and his voice was the most beautiful sound in the world to her.

But things had changed since he left.

Someone who resembled him had caused her so much pain that his face—his beautiful face—had become something hideous in her mind. Torments and endless punishments were all she could think of when Daemon stood before her, the doors to her dungeon cell open, offering freedom. She couldn’t explain why, but her perception of him was overlapping with someone else, and there shouldn’t have been an eyepatch over his eye, but there it was! She was seeing it.

The gentle hand he offered made her recoil, and if she could have melted into the wall behind her, she would have, so she could put more space between them. She shut her eyes tightly and whimpered.

"Please, please, don’t hurt me," she pleaded, her voice broken and hoarse from dehydration. Her lips were dry, the skin peeling in layers. Her body was emaciated, bruises and other wounds visible through her ragged gown. Warm tears rolled down her cheeks as fear pushed her into yet another panic attack—just one more in a series of recurring episodes that had plagued her for weeks.

Even after years of marriage to the love of her life, and knowing she was safe by his side, Angelica could not escape the shadows of her past. Her late master still haunted her dreams, a specter she could not banish. She would feel phantom hands running over her body, his breath hot against her ear, his voice a sinister whisper that made her skin crawl. These nightmares came unbidden, and more often than she cared to admit, she would wake in the middle of the night teetering on the edge of a panic attack.

She never screamed, but the abruptness with which she shot up, sometimes nearly tumbling out of bed, was enough to rouse her husband.

Daemon was her sanctuary, her angel in every sense of the word. His love was patient and unwavering, and he showed it in moments like these. Despite being startled awake, he never once displayed irritation or exhaustion. Instead, he cooed softly to her, his calm voice a gentle anchor that pulled her back from the storm raging in her mind.

“I-I’m sorry,” she stammered, her breath still shallow as her heart raced in her chest. Shame weighed her down, her gaze dropping to her lap. Another night stolen from his sleep because of her past. “I’m sorry, my prince,” she murmured, the title slipping from her lips instinctively. It was a reflex, her mind falling into old habits, her voice laced with the automatic deference of someone who had learned to tread carefully around power. Even though she was speaking to her loving husband, the memories of needing to please and appease still lingered, as if etched into her very soul.

The arms wrapping around her took her by surprise, making her heart skip a beat as old memories resurfaced—dark memories of a time when another man had held her without her consent.

The boy was still covered in goo from the egg that just hatched, yet, Aizel didn't even seem to notice it, even less to care about it. He was far too excited to introduce his newly hatched dragon to Daemon and Vermithor.

"Aster! His name is Aster!" The answer came without a second of thought. Looking after his big sister's choice, he also wanted his dragon to be named after the stars. He also wanted to honor his mother's maiden name.

The dragon reacted right away to have his name called, looking at the boy as if asking what he wanted.

"Oh..." His cheek grew bright red when he realized it meant he would have to speak High Valyrian more often.

The voice of the Stars

Once upon a time, a star fell from the heavens and landed gently upon the earth. Confused and lost, the star wandered in an unfamiliar land, her light dimmed from the fall. But fate was kind, for a humble farmer found her, offering her shelter and care. He nursed the star back to health, her shimmering glow slowly returning as he explained the wonders of his world. Day by day, she learned about life on the ground—about crops, the changing seasons, and the warmth of a home.

As her strength returned, the farmer began taking her on quiet walks beyond his fields, leading her to the bustling market of the nearby village. They wandered through the stalls, laughed with the townsfolk, and marveled at the simplicity of human life. Yet, there remained one unanswered question: how would the star return to her place in the firmament, high above with her celestial kin? Though they searched, the secret seemed lost, and so they continued to live side by side.

What the farmer did not know was that the star had long since discovered the way back to her home among the stars. But she had fallen in love with him. She had watched humans from the skies for ages and knew that their lives were fleeting, their time like a brief flicker compared to the endless dance of the stars. Still, she made a choice—she would stay with him, for however long his life would last.

And so, as the days passed, their love blossomed like the flowers in his garden. They built a life together, filled with joy and warmth, and in time, they were blessed with children. These children were special, for their voices held a magic unlike any other—they could sing to the heavens, and the stars would listen. The gift was a part of their mother, the fallen star, woven into their very being.

When at last the farmer’s life came to an end, the star knew it was time to return to the sky. With a heavy heart, she kissed their children goodbye and ascended to her rightful place, twinkling once more among her kin. It was then that her children understood their true legacy. Their voices, inherited from their mother, could call out to the stars—a song that resonated with those who shared a bond with the heavens.

And so, their voices became a bridge between earth and sky, a reminder that though the star had returned to the heavens, her love still lingered in the world below, in the hearts of her children, and in the song that connected them to the stars above.
