" I was under the assumption I was going to cover this meal anyway. " For himself, for Larry ( unfortunately ), AND for Phoenix. " It is the least I can do. Despite recent developments, the both of you DID help during my trial. "
The invitation had been interpreted as a means to catch up anyway, even if a third of the trio had scampered off for things of minor import. Considering their HISTORY, it would be wishful thinking to assume Larry had come prepared with funds of his OWN, especially at an establishment that was clearly a step above simple fast food.
--- that, or he's simply too TIRED to bother caring today. He can get on Larry's case another day.
Now left alone with the very man who had saved his career, though -- nay, his LIFE -- Miles is, mayhap to nobody's surprise, at a loss for words. There is much and more he wishes to say, but outside of the courtroom, he struggles with how to word things and how to CONVEY what he feels, because emotions are known to be anything but logical. Add the presence of someone who seems to CARE about him, and it worsens tenfold.
" ... it still has not completely set in yet, " he eventually mumbles with a guarded level of honesty, " Were it not for you... I would have been in jail. My entire life would have been gone in an instant. As much as I want to return to work, I... do not think I would be able to perform very efficiently at the moment. " Nor is the media likely to let this go anytime soon. Yes, it's... best he stay as much out of the public eye right now as possible. " While we are here, though, I wanted to speak with you about that. We haven't had a chance to properly talk since you suddenly barged your way back into my life. "
He's had his fill of tea, for now, and sets the cup down to the side. In the split second it takes him to, he has SOMEWHAT figured out how to respond.
" ... I don't get it, Wright. You based your whole career over some... nonsensical, fake trial from our childhood. " And thank goodness he did, else Edgeworth would be staring at a cot and a plate of food that looked like roadkill, with only a couple of bars to count as entertainment, but it still doesn't make sense. " Nobody in their right mind would ever go that far for someone. "
Phoenix didn't know whether to laugh in flattery or awkwardness over being called, in a sense, SIMPLE Should he have taken that as a compliment? From the other's demeanor, perhaps so, and so laugh Phoenix did, fingers rubbing at the back of his neck as his gaze drifted off towards their mutual friend's retreating form. Finally, Larry entirely vanished into the street crowd, leaving the defense attorney floundering for what to do.
What sort of conversational topics did you bring up to one you haven't been on speaking terms with for YEARS? Truthfully, he had been hoping for Larry's blabber mouth to keep the momentum going, but here Phoenix was, ABANDONED and left to fend for himself.
Don't overthink it!
"Still..." He began, resting folded hands atop the table as he forced his nerves down. Phoenix had always been good at that, maintaining the façade of having it all figured out. "... Larry's the one who chose this place, and now he's not even here. Sure, I've been pretty good at my job, but I'm not twenty dollars for a chicken sandwich, good." He could only assume Larry had thought Edgeworth would foot the bill for them. Well... for Larry, specifically.
Eyes which had lowered to the table then came to rise and resettle on the man across from him, a nagging feeling of CONCERN making itself home in his throat. "So... How are you feeling? I mean You're not going back to work any time soon, right?" He had heard that Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth was a workaholic, but SURELY after that case, the Defendant Miles Edgeworth would at least take a couple of days off, right?

Edgeworth needn't even spare a glance Larry's way to know he's dashing towards something RIDICULOUS, but even as he reaches for the cup of still steaming tea that had barely been given time to COOL before the abrupt change in plans, he cannot help but ~ S I G H ~ still.
" It seems there is nothing to catch up on. Clearly, little has changed since our childhood, given Larry's perpetually misplaced priorities. " It's disappointing and slightly frustrating, but strangely comforting all the same. Even despite all the time that has passed, and the series of unfortunate events that had driven them all apart, there is still some bit of familiarity, of NOSTALGIA, to cling to.
Pulling the mug to awaiting lips, Edgeworth savors the warmth and slightly bitter flavor of today's chosen brew ( Earl Grey, to keep it SIMPLE after an already hectic and complex couple of days ). " Regardless, this works in my favor. I am exhausted and much prefer the simplicity of your company over Larry's... c h a o s. "
starter for @tenebriism | Edgeworth ♡
"Huh... Well then..." Came the vocalization just as Larry vacated the third seat of their table. And why, exactly? To chase after the latest pretty face of the week, of course. "... And then there were two..." He quoted lamely, kicking a leg out gracelessly as he dug into his pocket for his WALLET. "So much for catching up like 'the good old days'." And it was Larry's idea to begin with! To 'make it up to Edgey', or so he put it. "Typical Larry."
A twenty-dollar bill was tossed onto the table, an apologetic look thrown Edgeworth's way soon after. "Sorry you had to come out all this way." And so soon after the man's TRIAL, too. The least they could have done was allowed Miles to rest.
