i genuinely don't understand what's so bad about making gay sex jokes it's not like they're being homophobic

if you constantly make gay sex specifically the joke in the same gross-out way you would shit or piss or something else disgusting, it reads as homophobic to me.

i'll refer you here for more commentary. they reference 'Dude, You're a Fag: Masculinity and Sexuality in High School' (pascoe) which i've only read in part but is certainly interesting. that article quotes pascoe twice:

Boys invoked the specter of the fag in two ways: through humorous imitation and through lobbing the epithet at one another. Boys at River High [where the book’s fieldwork was performed] imitated the fag by acting out an exaggerated ‘femininity’ and/or by pretending to sexually desire other boys.

amidst the flood of excited screaming over the sudden tonal shift in episode 11 of Dungeon Meshi, I have seen a few anime-only viewers who are a bit... put off by it?? some feeling that they were lied to, or accusing the story of abandoning its premise and feel-good vibes.

all I can say to those people without spoiling things is this: TRUST THE PROCESS. this tonal shift didn't come out of nowhere, and it wasn't put in merely for shock value. Dungeon Meshi is a carefully crafted work with themes that carry from its opening moments all the way through to its conclusion. as the story unfolds, those themes are expanded upon and explored in truly remarkable and unexpected ways. it is, when viewed in its entirety, one of the most cohesive and beautifully told narratives in the anime/manga space.

as for those feel-good vibes?? they never truly leave, in fact imho they only grow stronger as the story progresses in spite of its increasingly dark moments. and there WILL be dark moments. man oh man, y'all have seen NOTHING yet. but again: TRUST THE PROCESS. believe in these characters, in their tenacity, in their love for each other. no matter how dire things get, believe that there will always be a warm campfire and a delicious meal waiting for them at the end.

excited to announce that Maya's shoes officially have... Lore™

they're custom sports shoes specifically designed for "gravboarding!"

I used to imagine her driving a hover-moped, but I've now decided that it's a lot more fitting for her to instead be a gravboarder, riding on what is essentially a floating/flying surfboard. think liftboards in Eureka Seven, Jim's solar surfer in Treasure Planet, skimmers in Destiny 2, etc. etc.. those sick-ass gray kicks she wears attach to the surface of the gravboard (idk how yet. magnets???) to keep her feet firmly planted. in addition, there are special indentations designed into the soles which allow them to grip the board's various control pedals.

as you can imagine, it takes a lot of skill to know where and when and how to place your feet to be able to guide the board's movements. thankfully Maya is an expert in that department, thanks in no small part to the fact that she built her gravboard herself!!

you know, it's funny. for as long as I've been a fan of anime and manga, Dungeon Meshi might actually be the very first time I've gone into an anime adaption having fully consumed the original work beforehand. the feeling of watching something you love come to life before your eyes, and watching it be done so beautifully, is something I've never experienced until now, at least within this very specific space. like... it's amazing. and surreal. I'm so excited for what's coming.

had a dream about a Shin Godzilla sequel in which Godzilla was inexplicably wearing pants. no one addressed it and it changed literally nothing about the tone of the film. the weirdest part is the pants regenerated along with his flesh when injured.

The Iron Giant (1999) is absolutely one of my favorite movies ever, but every time I watch it I'm reminded of the fact that when it came out I was literally trying to convince the other kids at school that *I* made it. I was seven years old 😭

talked about this last night on the bird app but it just happened again so. omg. it kills me (in a good way) how every night I'll go to feed Alida her nightly pellets and she'll get SO EXCITED that she just. shoves her whole entire face directly into the bowl before I've even finished pouring. so I end up dumping food all over her big fat bunny head

just had a dream I was watching one of those poorly-animated Finding Nemo ripoffs you find in the bargain bin at Walmart?? there was this normie-ass dude fish and a super objectified lady fish standing on the surface of the water on their tailfins (???) while looking out towards the sunset.

the lady fish turned to the dude fish and went "I'm looking for something physical :)"

the dude fish smiled at her but it was weirdly melancholic, then the camera panned around the couple to reveal that the sun had gone supernova (!!!!!!). the two fish held hands/fins/whatever as they were engulfed in cosmic flames

the scene cut to black before eventually fading to a wide shot of outer space. an object slowly drifted into frame - a fish skewer with two perfectly-grilled fish on it, fins touching. the camera held on the skewer for a time before it began to float away into the eternal void, growing small and smaller while "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion played in the background
