let’s talk about prince chang’s clothes
prior to the big fight in s2, he was always seen wearing silks and fighting alongside soldiers in his silks, which suggests he’s still somehow above them. they look to him for leadership, yes, but he still wasn’t willing to really go down into their ranks. he does care for his men, but he still approaches everything with an air of privilege. when questioning people for example, he let muyeong talk to them instead of interacting with peasants himself. he commanded troops with muyeong as his buffer, essentially, and only communicates with them directly using shouted orders during fights.
the first time we see him in uniform clothing was when he and his small squad infiltrated mungyeong saejae. he was wearing all black, to get better cover by night. here the men (except yeongshin lmao) were dressed the same. it’s not much of a stretch because they’re noblemen, but it’s still a step down from wearing royal silks to the battlefield. it shows that, even if he is still the leader, he isn’t and shouldn’t be prioritized over everyone else.
and then during the final battle, we see him in rags. yes, it serves as a plot device to get into hanyang, but it’s also symbolic. it’s the final nail into convincing his audience of his advocacy: to the people. he’s dressed like all the soldiers who’ve fought and died for him in the battle with the plague, so the peasant dress is also a homage to them. it’s at the moment near the end of the fight where it finally clicked to me that, oh this guy really loves his people.
kingdom has a pretty sparse wardrobe for the main cast (mainly because of the volume of people they have to dress and put makeup on, but also it’s not ideal to be changing costumes every episode in joseon korea in this particular socio-economic climate), so they did a very good job when it came to prince chang’s clothing & character development
