KAFIJAS PLUSI MŪSU IKDIENĀ
Tumblr media

Opera singer here!
I'll go over some more music facts and terminology (Western Classical music), as well as give you some singing terms (specifically Western classical singing).
Key eras/epochs of music:
Note: everything before the Classical era (mid 18th century) is often calles Early Music. I am not an expert in music before 1600, so I will not presume to talk about it here at length.
Also, keep in mind that I am not a native English speaker, so do forgive me if I mistranslate anything. I'm doing my best.
1600-1750: Baroque era. Usually shifts in style happen slowly, however, there is a more or less clear cut around the year 1600 with the invention of the opera and they style of monody as opposed to the early polyphony. Instead of many independent voices, now there is a simple chord accompaniment to a more or less complicated solo voice (listen to operas by Monteverdi or Caccini, for example). Polyphony still exists, though the strict rules of the Renaissance are softened tremendously. (I also recommend listening to both Early and Late Baroque music (Monteverdi vs Händel, for example) - the difference is striking!)
Classical Era (mid 18th - early 19th century): Most famous here is the Viennese Classical era, or the Viennese Classics, consisting of Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven. Composers no longer wanted to write in the complicated Baroque style and now wrote (often) simpler melodies that would be easier to remember for the public.
Romance Era (early 19th - early 20th century): Larger orchestras in larger concert halls, as well as a shift to a different concert culture and more emotional music mark the Romance Era. Composers started to experiment more with harmonies and sounds. In Italy, we get Belcanto (Bellini, Rossini, Verdi...) and later Verismo (Puccini, Catalani...). In the German speaking region, we see the rise of the Kunstlied/Lied (songs for voice and piano), a genre that had existed before but now took on a whole life of its own. This is also when Slavic, especially Czech and Russian, music becomes more popular in Europe (Smetana, Dvořák, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff...)
Modern Music (late 19th - early 20th century): Here we see early, more experimental music that leaves tonality behind. Impressionism (Debussy), Expressionism (Stravinsky), and similar movements happen here.
New Music (~1910 onwards): After the sounds of the Romance Era, but especially following the horrors of the First World War, composers and musicians looked for new ways to express themselves. They broke free from any prior rules and made new ones. This is where Atonality, Twelve-tone-music (Dodecaphony), Aleatorical music (literally randomised music), and similar movements come from. Here, we have the Second Viennese School, made up of Arnold Schönber and his students, Alban Berg and Anton Weber. This era is the one where many people simply think of the music as "noise." I disagree.
Contemporary music: Composers who are still alive or have only recently died. There is, to my knowledge, no consistent style in "Classical" music today. Composers write anything from highly experimental to "Classical Modern" to Cabaret to Film Soundtracks, just as they always have. Also, women have always composed and performed, but to this day, composition is a male-dominated scene. However, nowadays, women are becoming more and more important. Important composers: Wolfgang Rihm (who died earlier this year), György Kurtág (born 1926), Kaija Saariaho (died 2023), Isabel Mundry (born 1963), and many more.
Basic musical terminology:
Musical notation: a staff, consisting of five parallel lines is the base of notation. On it, notes indicate pitch and rhythm: Pitch by how high up they are on the staff, rhythm by their shape. They can be placed on or in between the lines. If they are higher or lower than the staff allows, short auxiliary lines will be added. At the beginning of the staff, a clef shows how to read the notes by indicating which line is used for a certain note (base clef indicates an F3, Alto a C4, Treble a G5). Two numbers indicate the length of a bar/measure as well as where to stress. Flats or sharps show the key. Several connected staves (for example, several instruments in one score) are called a system.
Key: in Western Classical music, scales are made up of seven consecutive tones/pitches, before starting to repeat on the eighth. They consist of a set sequence of half and full tones. The two most important modes are major (full, full, full, half, full, full, full, half) and minor (full, full, half, full, full, half, full, full). Depending on which note you start that sequence, you get a different key with different flats or sharps, like D major (a sharp each on f and c), or f minor (a flat each on b, e, a and d). Major and minor keys which share the same flats/sharps are called parallel keys.
Notes: there are seven different natual notes which repeat indefinitely: usually starting with C, it goes C, D, E, F, G, A, B, and C again. These can have sharps added to them to raise them by a halftone, or flats to lower them by a halftone.
I won't go into harmony here - it's too complicated to explain in a simple overview post. Feel free to ask me about it though, I'm happy to explain.
Vocal terminology:
Important note about the voice types: those aren't harsh categories, but spectra. There are many singers who are between types. Type is determined by range (total vocal range), tessitura (how your voice is laid out over that range, which parts of it sound and feel best, where it is most comfortable) and timbre (the individual sound of your voice). You cannot truly change your natural voice type (except with testosterone to induce a second mutation/voice change, for example for trans men, or feminisation surgery, for example for trans women). However, it is possible that a voice can sing repoertoire in several types, or that because of faulty/a lack of singing technique, it sounds like one type while really being another. For example, I started out as a low mezzo-soprano, but as my technique developed, so did my high notes, until it became clear that I was really a soprano. Also, age and other bodily changes (like pregnancy, illness, etc) can change the type you're comfortable in.
Additionally to types, there are more categorisations, called Fach: Fach is German and means compartment, category, subject, or also expertise. There are, again, two main spectra here: coloratura - lyrical, and lyrical - dramatic/light - heavy. This is a very simplified way of putting it.
Coloratura is a type of music, and thus singing, with many fast notes. A coloratura voice must be very flexible and fast. Lyrical phrases are long, drawn-out, sustained notes. A lyrical voice must have the ability to support itself for long periods of time. A good singer should be able to do both, but certain voices lend themselves more to one or the other. A lyrical voice's coloraturas will hardly ever reach the speed and clarity of a coloratura singer, while the coloratura singer will struggle to maintain the legato (densely connected notes) and sustain of a lyrical voice.
On the other spectrum, we differentiate between weights/volumes: usually, lyrical voices (yes I know this is confusing, I'm sorry) are lighter, brighter and "slimmer" (soundywise, not physically), while dramatic voices are heavier, a bit darker, and have a lot of volume to them. Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to be loud to be able to sing opera (or any other Classical genre). Even smaller voices have their space.
Every voice has a place on both spectra, though usually only the weight and coloratura ability are mentioned: coloratura, lyrical coloratura, lyrical, heavy lyrical, dramatic coloratura, dramatic, highly dramatic... there are many possible Fachs. Over time, individual voices tend to become heavier/nore dramatic with age and experience, though this is not always the case.
Other vocal terms:
Support: there are many different words for this, and it's a complicated concept that can be a little difficult to wrap your head around if you're not experiencing it. Simply put, it's the muscular activity you need to control your airflow and thus vocal quality. It's a delicate balance between pressure and openness, between tension and relaxation.
Registers: A register is a range of notes, or a region in the voice, that sound and feel similar. There are many different terms here, many quite controversial. The most well-known are chest voice and head voice, though vocal experts don't agree on the definition. The physiological definition cones down to which sets of muscles in the larynx (voice box) are more ore less active while singing at a certain pitch, which is why this definition calls them laryngeal registers. There is a kinaesthetic (self-perception/proprioception) definition as well, which is where you most feel the vibrations of your voice. This is where the terms come from, since the chest vouce tends to resonate clearly in your lungs and trachea, while the head voice is felt most, well, in the head. There are many more registers, many more terms, and many more definitions. Again, ask me about it if you're interested.
Belting: a term exclusive to Jazz/Rock/Pop singing, and a technique that is not used in Classical (which is why I don’t know much about it). The chest voice is pulled up into higher pitches to allow for higher air pressure and thus louder sound.
Classical vs Pop: Generally speaking Classical technique relies on resonance more than air pressure, increasing the intensity of overtones in order to carry, as it was developed for singing in large spaces without artificial amplification. Jazz/Rock/Pop technique relies on air pressure more than than larfe resonance chambers, reducing the amount and intensity of overtones and relying on amplification to carry, as this is what it was developed for. Neither is inherently better or worse, or worth more ore less, or healthier or unhealthier than the other. Each have their own advantages and disadvantages, each have their own risks, each have their own applications they are suited for. To claim differently is to be closed minded and exclusionist. I believe that both techniques can profit from knowing the basics of the other. However, in order to be truly good at one, you should focus on it instead of spreading yourself thin and trying to apply yourself equally to both, otherwise you will be stuck being mediocre at both instead.
Have any more questions? Ask me about it! I am a trained and active classical singer and a professional vocal teacher with a master's degree in classical vocal pedagogy. I am happy to answer any of your questions or point you the right way, if I can.
Hello! I don't know if it's ok to ask (but if it's not ,you can forget it) but i really want write about a oc who is actor/singer and i really want to know some vocabulary to use the music/voice/rythm field ,please.
Hi, this is perfectly fine! Learned a lot from these notes as well :)
Writing Notes: Key Musical Terms
Understanding key musical terms is essential for anyone interested in music. Knowing these terms may enhance appreciation and comprehension of the art form.
3 Fundamental Musical Terms
Pitch and Melody: Pitch refers to the highness or lowness of a musical sound. Melody, on the other hand, is a sequence of pitches arranged in a meaningful and cohesive manner. Melodies are the catchy tunes that we hum along to and are often the main focus of a piece of music.
Rhythm and Tempo: Rhythm refers to the pattern of durations and accents in music. It is the element that gives music its groove and pulse. Tempo, on the other hand, refers to the speed at which a piece of music is played. It affects the mood and energy of the music, whether it's fast and lively like allegro music tempo or slow and soothing.
Harmony and Chords: Harmony is the combination of different pitches played simultaneously, creating a rich and full sound. Chords, which are formed by harmonizing notes together, are the building blocks of harmony. They provide the harmonic support and often accompany the melody, adding depth and texture to the music.
By familiarizing yourself with these key musical terms, you will gain a deeper understanding of music and be able to communicate and discuss it more effectively.
TYPES OF MUSICAL TERMS. These terms provide a shared language for musicians and enable them to communicate effectively.
3 Key Categories of Musical Terms
Dynamics and Expression: Dynamics refers to the volume and intensity of a musical piece. Terms such as pianissimo (very soft), mezzo piano (moderately soft), mezzo forte (moderately loud), and fortissimo (very loud) describe the desired dynamics. Expression, on the other hand, focuses on the interpretation and emotional delivery of the music, encompassing terms like legato (smooth and connected) and staccato (short and detached).
Musical Forms and Structures: Musical forms and structures define the organization and arrangement of a composition. Common forms include sonata, symphony, concerto, and fugue. Each form possesses distinct characteristics, allowing composers to create cohesive and engaging musical works.
Instrumentation and Orchestration: Instrumentation refers to the selection and arrangement of instruments in a musical composition. Understanding the unique qualities of each instrument helps composers and performers achieve the desired sound and texture. Orchestration, on the other hand, involves assigning specific musical parts to different instruments within an orchestra.
Musical Terms in Practice
When reading sheet music, understanding musical terms is crucial for accurately interpreting the piece. Musical terms provide instructions on how to play the music, indicating dynamics, tempo, articulation, and more.
To interpret musical terms in sheet music, start by familiarizing yourself with the most common terms. For example:
'Piano' indicates soft playing, while
'Forte' means loud.
'Allegro' signifies a fast tempo, while
'Adagio' represents a slow tempo.
By recognizing these terms, you can bring the intended expression and emotion to your writing.
Using musical terms in performance enhances the overall musical experience. It allows musicians to communicate and synchronize their playing, creating a cohesive and expressive performance.
When musicians follow the indicated musical terms, the piece comes alive, capturing the composer's vision.
Furthermore, exploring the cultural significance of musical terms adds depth and context to the music. Musical terms often have historical and cultural origins, reflecting the traditions and practices of different periods and regions.
Understanding the cultural background of musical terms can provide insights into the composer's intentions and the historical context in which the piece was created.
VOICE. May be arranged in 6 orders or classes, according to gravity or acuteness.
Bass
Baritone
Tenor
Alto (or Contralto)
Mezzo-soprano
Soprano
The first 3 are the natural voices of men and the second 3 those of women.
The compass or range of notes is different in each voice, but it is not compass alone which determines the class to which any voice may belong, as very frequently a baritone quality of voice is limited to the range of a bass, and a tenor quality to the compass of a baritone.
It is almost impossible to describe in words the general character of the several voices, it must be sufficient to give the number of notes they are capable of using.
