marriage in the punjabi culture is a curious thing. a joyous occasion marked with singing, dancing, and far too many sweets... especially for the mundewale. for a bride’s family, the emotions are mixed. joy and excitement fill the air but compete for space with an underlying sadness, angst, and perhaps even hope. folklore sings of the woman’s journey into her new home; her “true” home, with her husband and in-laws. more than ever, my love for punjabi culture rivals my disdain for the connotations much of our folklore carries as i cringe-laugh at the casual references to domestic violence and inter-family politics embedded in the lyrics of wedding songs... wondering if anyone else hears the words and realizes that they indeed stemmed from truth. that such a culture has only perpetuated the acceptability of such heinousness. that the other ‘part’ of our lineage is an antithesis of everything being sung and done.

i choose to focus on that other part. on the revolution created by Nanak and carried through today. while we dance & sing in the fun and games of the viyah; while i incessantly fret over each detail and every outfit; and most of all, in this moment, while we complain and whine about the snowy cold Northeast, there is the one Constant that allows me to focus, to breathe, and to remember. the Anand Karaj. one reading of the Bani brings me back to where i need to be - creating a thin layer between me and my surroundings and allowing me to be just enough removed to remember that this whole wedding is only the beginning of a lifelong marriage. that the whole “#harmeetsjudh” thing only matters if we, in turn, make a commitment of the marriage between ourselves and our Creator. and that Creator reigns supreme in such a way that no decoration, no plan and no event can ever combat. such a realization makes me feel small, and feeling small makes one humble - which is exactly what i want to feel as a bride. humbled by the greatness of the Divine, and full of immense love for those who embody Him around us. 

come rain, snow, or sunshine - our union of husband and wife is fast approaching. i think we’re ready to take the leap. :)
