It only takes a few moments. First Thank God! Then thank a veteran!  Our unique-God-loving hometown is filled with  His Sweet Spirit.  That is why people love it here so much! SALEM MAN HAD SAME MULE FOR 40 YEARS. . .(Last week I posted a poem that Doris Rogers-Ripoll wrote in 1992 about her childhood years at Tamassee DAR School. For a number of years in the 1970s, Doris (then Doris Rogers) wrote feature stories for the Keowee Courier, including the following one that was in the January 5, 1977 Courier):. . .Slow-moving but fast-thinking Mr. Erby Bennett of the Fall Creek community above Salem, just buried the only "child" he ever had. . .Rhodie was her name and she never gave Mr. Bennett any trouble. She worked well, whatever and whenever he asked her. She loved Mr. Bennett, too. . .Sadly, Rhodie died of old age last Saturday; she was forty years old and died in the rain. . .Mr. Bennett paid Horace Hinkle $25 to bury Rhodie with a back-hoe digger. Erby's heart was breaking as they lowered his long-time friend, Rhodie the mule, into the ground near his home. . .Mr. Bennett bought his mule from Clarence Dills shortly after she was born, planning to use her for gardening and farming. He was 28 years old. Rhodie turned out to be gentle enough for children to ride. She also hauled water, dragged logs, pulled wagons, and was never stubborn or grouchy. . .Mr. Bennett and his wife, the former Carrie Dills, will both miss old Rhodie. Mrs. Bennett said, "They were two of a kind. As they got older they just pulled each other across the garden". . .Erby remarked, "It was hard, like parting with a member of the family. Giving her up really hurt."

ADVENT SEASON:  The anticipation and excitement of the Coming of Christ is represented by lighting  candles on an Advent Wreath in church and in your own home as a tradition each of the 4 Sundays before Christmas Day. There are 4 candles, 3 purple and 1 pink that surround the center white candle of Christ. The 1st purple candle represents Hope of a Savior, a promised King to save us from evil in this world. The 2nd purple candle represents unconditional Love to all people. The 3rd pink candle represents the Joy in Mary’s heart knowing she would give birth to this promised King.  The 4th candle will be lit next Sunday representing the Peace that Christ brings to our lives in a hurting world, knowing that his presence is with us always. The Christ candle will be lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. The gift of Christmas-Hope-Love-Joy-Peace– from Christ!

Health Tip: A reader asked what is a Nettie Pot? It is a small pot shaped device that holds a solution to irrigate your nasal passages to loosen congestion.  Boil water on the stove top and allow to cool down before using then stir in a packet of saline crystals or  buy your solution.
