High Falutin Houstin
I had a blast in New Orleans.  Since this trip was ordained by God, I have magically arrived in every place at the most perfect time.  I just happened to schedule New Orleans over Jazz Fest weekend and had no idea until I go there.
Tumblr media
There were tornados abound the morning of our only chance to go.  We made a bee-line for music the moment they stopped and were not disappointed.  The mud was our favorite part.  As soon as I was able to stop trying to get places and just follow Alastar, I found myself running and dancing to Tom Petty through streams of mud puddles and crowds of people cheering us on and high-fiving little maestro.  A photographer from the New York Times took a bunch of pictures of us and this is the type of thing that happens when I let Alastar lead the way.
I also visited a friend that I have had just a little bit for almost twenty years.  She and I had known of and appreciated each other, but never spent time together other than at parties.  She has been such a fan of my work and a support, I decided to participate in her life for a few days.
Her house was gorgeous--one of the new constructions up on ten foot high levelers in an area of New Orleans that had been totally decimated by Katrina.  It was a comfortable stopping point to ground after the flurry of getting going.
I didn’t realize but I was there for a much bigger reason:  I was there to study the art of wholesaling and sales to large scale couture department stores.
Tumblr media
I have been meeting famous successful people who want to tell me their secrets and guide me into success on their level lately.  I believe this is a result of having worked so hard for many years to perfect my art and now it is ready.  Here in New Orleans I got to spend a long weekend with an expert in sales, a professional consultant at this point.  He set me up an appointment at one of the most expensive department stores in Houston and secured us a night in the corporate condo.  He then told me step by step exactly how to approach and sell the buyers there.  Not only did he answer any question I could possibly dream up about this big step in the direction that I need to go, I also gained a template for working with any store that I want to be a part of.

So we went on to Houston--I floated there on a cloud, running through this sales fantasy over and over in my head.  I had many tiny details to put together--like how to move from hotel room to condo, get Alastar and Ida settled with a sitter and arrive at my big meeting by 1:00 pm all in one morning.  I had to park my gigantic car with bikes dripping off of it and stuff tied to the roof in a spot where it wouldn’t be associated with me, bring in luggage, stroller, dog etc in a way that was somehow elegant and look expensive during one of the most Bohemian Wilberry periods my life has seen.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately my main contact person was also the accessories buyer whom I was supposed to sell to.  I called her trying to get details about finding this condo and be as unobtrusive as possible.  My heart sank when she insisted on meeting me at the door and physically showing me where it was.  Instead of waltzing in dripping with silk and diamonds, her first impression of me was as single mother smothered in bags and creatures, pushing along an ancient squeaky stroller that is on its last legs because it is almost obsolete.
I was so enchanted by the way I had blindly waltzed into this boon that I couldn’t imagine failure.  I totally bombed that meeting.  It was not possible for me to present the power that I have to offer because my first impression displayed a chaotic struggling single mother.  This is only a small part of what I am, but when it shows, it is blaringly obvious.  Magical artist channeling divinity onto silk and creating art that must be owned doesn’t usually pair with the stroller crazy dog lady suitcases that this woman first witnessed....She could not buy into the presentation image after having seen my entrance.
Deep and wide lesson learned.  I got a bachelor’s degree in psychology and then got into the most challenging school of life I could find: World Traveling Professional Artist Healer Single Mother.  There is a razor sharp line between success and failure and the lessons are blatent, harsh and unforgiving.  Exciting!  I am often glad I learned to love brutal honesty and take criticism as a gift a while back....
